One of the highlights of German humor. in their dubbed version they have the two black guys speaking an impernitrable Bavarian dialect:
But the title of the movie still astounds me
"Die verrückte Reise in einem total unglaublichen Flugzeug"
(The Crazy Journey in a totally Incredible Airplane)
I guess they had to add the wild-and-crazy disclaimer so that theater goers would not expect a serious philosphical treatment of mankind's ability to cope with boarding delays, lost baggae and jet lag...

" I would no more remove someone for the disease of alcoholism than I would for the disease of cancer"
I agree, alcoholism is a disease, not grounds for firing.
But the actual drinking is not a disease, and alcoholics who continue drink are behaving like cancer patients who continue to smoke asbestos-fintered cigarettes, and should be given an ultimatum to seek and adhere to therapy or face removal.

No, it's a terrible deal, caused by the unprecedented blackmailing behavior of the GOP. We're in a recession. We need to increase spending, not cut spending. What the GOP wants is absolute economic idiocy, especially in wanting aid to the poor cut.
Luckily, I think the way the bill is structured is going to prevent it from doing most harm, and the Bush tax cut expiration lines up nicely with the next deficit discussion.

Well, there's nothing to really like about it. Cutting spending during a recession is economic idiocy. Reprioritizing spending would be great, but that's not what we're doing.
However, with the GOP engaged in complete political blackmail, I don't think anything better than this deal is possible. This deal itself may not be possible.

Except we have no clue as of right now what "automatic cuts" are in the offering. It could just as easily be a "rock or hard place" situation for Democrats, stuck between two equally unpalatable choices of cuts. And it's going to be only cuts, because you know the GOP will fight tooth and nail to ensure that the "savings" do not include revenue enhancements of any kind, regardless of where the burden will ultimately fall.

Right now would be a perfect time for the US to borrow a lot of money and invest it in long-term things like alternative energy research, infrastructure, etc. But the American public has been convinced that we're 'broke'. It's depressing.

So, we don't need a tax increase? I don't understand.
We need a tax increase to pay for things that we can't pay for all at once. right now, interest rates on government bonds are below inflation; that means that there's a negative return for anyone buying government bonds, but people are still buying them vociferously because the private market sucks so badly. So, if we wanted to spend ten billion on alternative energy, it'd be cheaper to issue bonds (borrow) that money and spend it now, because paying for it over time would be more expensive.
However, for costs that can't be paid for up-front-- like paying out unemployment, salaries, etc.-- we need higher tax revenue. These interest rates will go up once the economy improves and people stop seeking the safety of government bonds.
My main point is that this is the stupidest time to object to raising the debt limit, because, due to the low interest rates, it is the best possible time for the government to borrow money. That's one reason I'm filled with such contempt for the GOP's economic idiocy.

The Bush tax cuts will be expiring right around the same time. If the GOP is still in control of the house, they may try a similar blackmail around that time period, but the Democrats will have the option of just letting the cuts expire.
They had the option last time. The GOP took unemployment hostage and swore they were going to blow its brains out unless the Dems singed off on an extension. They got the extension and a payroll tax "holiday" they hadn't even been demanding.
Why do they keep taking hostages? Because Democrats don't have the balls to say "Go ahead, blow his head off, because it'll be the last thing you ever do."

I work from home, and a lot of what I do involves setting something in motion and letting it compile for ten minutes, then doing another thing, letting it compile, etc. It's a long, slow dance with a lot of spinning plates, and if I didn't find things to occupy myself in the gaps, I'd go nuts.
Right now, I'm actually giving myself a small vacation-- just shunted projects around-- because I'm trying to write a book.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Just got a new computer for home, and the drool factor (and smile on my face) isn't going to go away anytime soon. It may not be the fastest machine on the market, but twin 23" displays makes the world a whole lot easier to control. I've still got a bunch of data to port over to the new machine, and getting used to Win 7.
Oh, and there was something about a debt deal that was a handshake agreement in principle? Yeah, anyone want to bet that the CBO scores the damned thing close to what the other two plans were? Anyone? Or that few of the cuts occur within the first couple of years and it's backloaded just like the rest of the plans? Or that the CBO has to score it to assume that the AMT doesn't get adjusted or that the Obama-extended Bush tax cuts are also allowed to expire? (because that's the assumptions that the CBO must take in to account when figuring out revenues and spending on these bills - it must assume that the law will not be changed from as it in effect upon passage of the bill under consideration).
Raising the ceiling was never really in doubt beyond all the outrageous hyper hyperbole - and the two conferences would get something through, even if it was an interim measure.
On the one hand, one can hope that the TP will have had a last gasp as a result of this, but I think they're going to be even more emboldened to gum up the works going forward, seeing how they were able to keep any tax hikes from the compromise.

Agreed. If the GOP hasn't shed its lunatics-- really, basically reformed itself entirely as a political party-- by the time the expiration of the temporary Bush tax cuts comes up, we will probably see the same sort of blackmail in operation then, as well.

Breaking Earth shattering news! Romney speaks out on the debt compromise:
Romney Breaks Debt Ceiling Silence: ‘Cannot Support This Deal’
After a week of attacks from left and right alike over his failure to take a position on the latest round of Republican debt ceiling proposals, Mitt Romney has made up his mind on the final deal: he's against it.
"As president, my plan would have produced a budget that was cut, capped and balanced - not one that opens the door to higher taxes and puts defense cuts on the table," he said in a statement. "President Obama's leadership failure has pushed the economy to the brink at the eleventh hour and 59th minute. While I appreciate the extraordinarily difficult situation President Obama's lack of leadership has placed Republican Members of Congress in, I personally cannot support this deal."
Etc. Etc.

re: #354 ralphieboy
Probably about 1993. Why do you ask?
Because. I went on a road trip in May. From Colorado to California. It reminded me of how conservative America really is. Even well into California it's conservative. Right now I'm 30 miles south of San Jose and it's relatively conservative out here including a lot of "end-o-times" people. It's also a very Christian nation. Utah of course is largely Mormon and the conservative atmosphere is clearly evident during my travels. Nevada being the same. Once I got out of my liberal ghetto in Denver it was noticeable. Even within Colorado -- and this had always been true -- one can see the conservative nature of the people.

That's why, instead of just asking people whether they identify as liberal/conservative/moderate, I'd prefer a poll which asked what specific policies they support.

I don't. I have particular positions, that I think are pragmatically workable.
In terms of political philosophy, I basically have two ideals:
1. Survival of the human race and civilization
2. Individual liberty.
In terms of how far away from the current state I'd like to change society and the political system, I'm a complete radical. In terms of how much I realize that small, incremental steps are necessary, I'm a moderate.

I used to follow the social-liberal/fiscal-conservative tack for a while until I saw what the GOP's economic policies were about: allowing interet groups to unduly assert their influence on the economy.
Espeicially in those areas that highly affect the economy, namely the interface between the market and government policy: taxation, regulation, infrasturcture, defense, etc.
If "government interference in the market" means maintaining a plurality of interests in determining the structure of our national economy , especially of those without lobbies and financial clout, then I am begrudgingly in favor of it.

I'm a neoliberal generally speaking, and push libertarian on social issues. Freedom knows no borders and human rights are universal - and if that means going and putting a stop to despotic regimes that engage in mass murder to stay in power then I would support those efforts.
So, I get a kick out of the fact that I can get quoted by Ted Kennedy in a policy paper and have Karl Rove and Jim DeMint following me on Twitter.

The problem with the station’s depiction is that the boy’s words were taken completely out of context. The boy mentioned that he wanted a gun, not because his preschool had taught him to become a gang banger. Instead, he wanted the gun because he was planning to become a police officer. So, similar to the racial disease that infects the images and outcomes of millions of other black boys in America, the media had turned a law abiding four year old into a menace to society before he’d even learned how to read. And the CBO scores this new debt deal... close to where the others were. It gets a staggered raise in the debt limit in exchange for $917 billion in cuts that are delineated and possible additional cuts to come later. It seems to mirror the Reid deal in dollar value but like the Boehner plan, doesn't count the military as part of the reductions.
$21 billion cut in 2012, $42 billion in 2013, and rising to $156 billion cut in 2021 to total out $917 billion in cuts over a 10 year period. Most of that is once again backloaded in the final years of the deal. There's another $1.2 trillion that might get added to that amount, but that isn't broken out in the deal b/c it's based on what a panel of Congress members will decide. That too will likely be backloaded in a similar fashion.
After all the furor over the deals, this isn't all that different than the prior deals but for the panel to come up with another $1.2 trillion in cuts that may not be realized.

Look, some people, like Teabaggers are utterly "conservative" on everything but in my experience most who think can be that on some matters and quite liberal on others. When doing surveys, if they are to the right on half the questions and left on half, they are labelled moderate, even if the topic at hand is quite specific.

U.S. health insurance companies must offer women free birth control and other preventive health care services under Obama administration rules released on Monday, a historic decision supported by family planning groups and opposed by conservative groups. The rules from the Health and Human Services Department are part of the nation's healthcare overhaul and largely follow recommendations from an advisory group released last month.
The U.S. Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, commissioned by the Obama administration, recommended that all U.S.-approved birth control methods -- including the "morning-after pill," taken shortly after intercourse to stop a pregnancy -- be added to the list of preventive health services.

Those who live by the sword and attack others and act to destroy their own countries will suffer such in return.

Yeah, back when Christians slaughtered the Jews, enslaved them, forced them to convert, and burned the synagogue in Jerusalem.
The Crusades were pretty much the start of modern anti-semitism in Europe. The blood libel myth dates from then. European armies on their way to the Crusades massacred Jews in Prague, Mainz, etc. Jews, of course, fought on the side of the Muslims against the invaders, and so were killed in battle and then in the slaughter of civilans in Jerusalem.
How on earth Pam, or any other Jew, can overlook that history, I have no idea.

It's easy to do when one is desperately, deliberately seeking to bolster one's own worldview. She wants to be RIGHT, GODDAMMIT, about the Muslim menace, even if that means she has to resort to tolerating neo-Crusader rhetoric that should ordinarily boil her blood.
Neo-Crusader. Holy cow. I suppose that's a decent enough description of the movement, though the very thought chills me to the bone. The Crusades were merciless and violent, a veritable orgy of death and destruction across the Middle East and elsewhere.
