Video: Rick Perry’s Crazed Prayer Rally

Meanwhile, rolling blackouts go into effect in Texas despite fervent prayer
Wingnuts • Views: 39,484

Today Texas Governor Rick Perry held his prayer rally “The Response,” with a panoply of the most insane, bigoted, and outright racist fundamental Christian leaders imploring their God to help them turn America into a repressive theocracy.

No, I’m not exaggerating.

Right Wing Watch is posting videos from this bizarre congruence of far right politics and fanatical religion. Here’s the anti-choice section, as Alveda King, Lila Rose, and Susan Tyrell hysterically beg God to take away women’s reproductive rights.

Good morning, Charles. We've been commenting on the feed downstairs. Painful to watch.

We love the Jews! Well, as long as long they accept the Messiah of Israel, and you know, stop being Jewish.

These lunatics are better adherents to their faith than most. You can't spell fundamentalist without fundamental...and by proxy, "mental" in the British slang definition.

Lila Rose has a good franchise going.

Dunno. I am not planning to get myself whipped into a frenzy over this event. It's a big prayer meeting. Big deal. The only thing I have an issue with is Perry's involvement blurring the lines.

The people we're seeing praying at Reliant Stadium are for the most part innocent believers, but they are the electoral force behind some really regressive, authoritarian thinking. From the Right Wing Watch link above:

The AFA today is led by Tim Wildmon, Don’s son, and its chief spokesperson is Bryan Fischer, the Director of Issues Analysis for Government and Public Policy and host of its flagship radio show Focal Point.

Fischer routinely expresses support for some of the most bigoted and shocking ideas found in the Religious Right today. He has:

- held gays responsible for the Holocaust and likened them to domestic terrorists and Nazis who are intent on committing “virtual genocide” against the military, and asserts that “homosexuals should be disqualified from public office”;
- said “we have feminized the Medal of Honor” by awarding it to a soldier who saved his fellow combatants rather than killing enemies;
- demanded all immigrants “convert to Christianity” and renounce their religions;
- asserted that Muslims have “no fundamental First Amendment claims” and should be banned from building mosques and deported from the US, adding that Muslims are inherently stupid as a result of inbreeding;
- claimed African American women “rut like rabbits” due to welfare and that Native Americans are “morally disqualified” from living in America because they didn’t convert to Christianity and were consequently cursed by God with alcoholism and poverty;
- said that the anti-Muslim manifesto of the right-wing Christian terrorist who killed dozens in Norway was “accurate.”

You have hit it on the head: they believe first of all that we are "exceptional".
They believe this exceptionalism is rooted in our adherence to (their interpretation of) God's Law.
They believe that if we stray from (their interpretation of) God's Law then we are dooming our nation.
This can very quickly be turned into a rationalization for acts that are unconstitutional and even illegal.

But that is not how the world works. Recognition and gratitude are not part of the Universal Declaration of Human Entitlements, and are almost as rare as the baths these spoiled brats take. This is really eye opening for me, if these are their innocuous beliefs, a lot of behavior makes a lot more sense. I would really like to read a transcript of this. As soon as something is spoken rhythmically, people seem to think the actual content no longer matters.

Awful awful awful:

Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- The U.S. military was reeling Saturday after a helicopter went down in eastern Afghanistan killing 31 Americans, including 22 Navy SEALs, a U.S. military official told CNN Saturday.

It was the single deadliest incident since the start of the decade-long Afghan war, an Army Chinook carrying a team of U.S. special forces and U.S. and Afghan soldiers that went down in Wardak province. Insurgents are believed to have shot down the helicopter, the military official said.

The majority of the Navy SEALs who died belonged to the same covert unit that conducted the raid that killed Osama bin Laden in May, though they were not the same men, the official said.

"It's a big loss" for the SEALs, one of the officials said. "The numbers are high."

You know, being born and raised Catholic, I find these worship gatherings unseemly. Say the mass, listen to the sermon, sing the doxology, and go home.

Yeah, that's how I feel.
I agree these loud worship gatherings are unseemly, and for me, uncomfortable when I'm anywhere near.

But you know - those folks wanna do it? Go ahead, I don't care what goes on with anybody's personal time. But I sure as hell don't wish for anyone who I disagree with to not exist. What a weird thing, to say people doing something you find odd is a "good argument for" abortion.

When a politician starts imposing his/her belief? That's where the line is drawn, IMO.

As to the prayer rally itself? While I believe in the power of prayer, I also think God has a lot more on His mind than making sure this or that person gets elected (or not) in Texas.

I think the leadership of the AFA, among others involved, believes that they have been called by God to rescue secular society. This is the beginning of their political response.

The Response is powered by politically active Religious Right individuals and groups who are dedicated to bringing far-right religious view, including degrading views of gays and lesbians and non-Christians, into American politics.

In fact, a spokesman for The Response has said that while non-Christians will be welcomed at the rally, they will be urged to “seek out the living Christ.” Allan Parker, a right-wing activist who participated in an organizing conference call for the event, declared in an email bearing the official Response logo that including non-Christians in the event "would be idolatry of the worst sort."

Perry told James Dobson that the rally was necessary because Americans have “turned away from God.”

Here's another view of the organizers of this thing from the Native American perpsective.

This bit should go in Bryan Fischer's Top 10 this is orders of magnitude worse than advocating making grizzly bears extinct.

“The Response” has generated a squall of controversy, much of it centered around Fischer, the AFA’s Director of Analysis for Government and Public Policy. Fischer is perhaps best known for warning the people of America that President Obama “wants to give the entire land mass of the United States of America back to the Indians. He wants Indian tribes to be our new overlords.” But it was Fischer’s article “Native Americans Morally Disqualified Themselves from the Land” published last winter that has generated the harshest criticism for its blatant racism against the Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island.

The article was removed from the AFA website but is archived as Text of Fischer’s Racist Screed on Newspaper Rock. In it, Fischer claims that “the superstition, savagery and sexual immorality of native (sic) Americans” made them “morally disqualified from sovereign control of American soil.” He draws an analogy between the Indigenous Peoples of this country and the “Amorites, or Canaanite peoples” – the ancestors of today’s Palestinians – who “practiced one moral abomination after another, whether it was incest, adultery, sexually immorality, homosexuality, bestiality or child sacrifice, and God finally said ‘Enough’” – and gave the land to the ancient Israelites.

What. An. Asshole.

according to christian doctrine in all sects, you were born with original sin (although it's not in the bible and in fact was invented many centuries after jesus' death), so you are damned until proven otherwise, and the criterion for not being damned is to "accept jesus as savior"

debate continues as to whether people born before jesus can have their souls reside in heaven

There is also the question of rather unbaptized babies go to hell or not.

During the time that the bible was written Romans believed that babies didn't have souls until they had teeth. Wonder if that influence the early christianity.

All sorts of people will try to influence policy, all the time.
Some I will agree with, others not.
But individual people in this country, including those who pray and are religious, have a right to have an opinion, to express it - all of which is an attempt to influence policy.

Shall we discuss pros and cons of the policies they are trying to influence? Now there's a discussion.

But being so pissed off for no reason other than people have the right to try to influence policy in this country, and use that right, is silly, and leads to epithets such as "fuckstain" (that lizard used) being used to describe human beings, which is utterly ridiculous and unproductive.

Right on!

See, while I agree that Perry and Brownback are flirting with separation of church & state issues with this prayer rally (that overtly calls for political "solutions"), especially if their state employees felt pressured to attend, I don't necessarily agree with the "Freedom from Religion" folks' overall aims.

Whether you want to worship the deity of your choice or none at all, it's our choice as Americans to do so without discrimination from the federal (and state) government(s). I don't need a bunch of people trying to "save" me from religion, because I'm more than capable of making up my own mind about such matters.

This whole thread and commentary is about separation of Church and State.

It's becoming so blurred, without much push back. By falling back on defending religion per se, we are missing the point.

And also, by falling back and poking fun at people because of the way they pray, and not about what they are praying for, we are missing the point.

I don't think the Freedom of Religion people are trying to save you.

The best illustration of how prayer works is the joke about the old Jewish guy who prays to God every Sabbath to help him win the lottery.

(Fischer) held gays responsible for the Holocaust and likened them to domestic terrorists and Nazis who are intent on committing “virtual genocide” against the military, and asserts that “homosexuals should be disqualified from public office”;
said “we have feminized the Medal of Honor” by awarding it to a soldier who saved his fellow combatants rather than killing enemies;
demanded all immigrants “convert to Christianity” and renounce their religions;
asserted that Muslims have “no fundamental First Amendment claims” and should be banned from building mosques and deported from the US, adding that Muslims are inherently stupid as a result of inbreeding;
claimed African American women “rut like rabbits” due to welfare and that Native Americans are “morally disqualified” from living in America because they didn’t convert to Christianity and were consequently cursed by God with alcoholism and poverty;
said that the anti-Muslim manifesto of the right-wing Christian terrorist who killed dozens in Norway was “accurate.”

Other AFA leaders and activists are just as radical:

AFA President Tim Wildmon claims that by repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell President Obama shows he “doesn’t give a rip about the Marines or the Army” and “just wants to force homosexuality into every place that he can.”
AFA Vice President Buddy Smith, who is on the leadership council of The Response, said that gays and lesbians are “in the clasp of Satan.”
The head of the AFA’s women’s group led a boycott against Glee because she accused it of indoctrinating children in homosexuality and idolatry.The editor of AFA Journal Ed Vitagliano said that gay pride months are an affront to the Founding Fathers and will usher in “a return to pagan sexuality.”
A columnist for the AFA demanded Christians stop practicing yoga because it was inspired by the “evil” religions of Buddhism and Hinduism.

"Fuckstain" is really not strong enough language for these people

Gotta give the organizers of this event credit- getting all those people there in such a state.
I wish that many people would show up for rallys to support funding for homeless shelters or other social causes.

Yeah, I bet $ raised from this thing (books, cd's, dvd's) goes back to the organizers fat accounts. It's really a shame.

Rick Perry's Prayer Rally, Sponsored by Intolerance [Link: t.co...] #p2 #TheResponse

Full quote since this is a press release:

PFAW: Rick Perry's Prayer Rally, Sponsored by Intolerance

Texas Gov. Rick Perry today held The Response prayer rally, an event he organized with the the American Family Association, a group with a history of intolerance toward gays and lesbians, Muslims, Native Americans and progressives.

Along with Gov. Perry and Gov. Sam Brownback of Kansas, the event drew speakers from the extreme right, including James Dobson and John Hagee, whose statements about Catholics and Jews led John McCain to reject his endorsement in 2008.

People For the American Way's Right Wing Watch exposed the extreme views of the American Family Association and many other participants in The Response in the weeks leading up to the rally. Right Wing Watch's research can be found here.

"Gov. Perry and Gov. Brownback, as Americans, are free to worship however they like with whoever they like," said Michael Keegan, President of People For the American Way. "But it is troubling that both are willing to partner with, and lend credibility to, people like John Hagee and the American Family Association at such a high-profile event.

"The AFA has claimed that gays and lesbians are responsible for the Holocaust, that Native Americans deserved to be driven out of their lands, and that Muslims have no First Amendment rights. John Hagee has called the Catholic Church the 'great whore' and claimed that God sent Hitler to kill the Jews. It's absolutely stunning that a man who is considering running for president of the United States is not only appearing with these extremist figures, but giving them a national stage on which to promote their views.

"If Gov. Perry wishes to bring Americans together, lifting up voices of intolerance and division is not the way to do it."

Yesterday, People For the American Way's African American Ministers in Action, a nationwide network of African American clergy, also urged Perry to denounce the divisive rhetoric of the AFA .

Ah, yes. Catholicism.

You will not find a more ardent critic than Reine when it comes to the way the church has handled such atrocities, Catholic though she is. She has more integrity than the both of us put together, so I don't see why sniping at her with this is in any way relevant.

In those cases, religion is incidental.

To paraphrase some guy: Think of an act of genuine kindness or charity that could only have been performed by a person acting on religious instruction. Now think of an an act of cruelty and horror that could only have been performed by a person acting on religious instruction.

Anyone wanting to do evil will find a reason to do it.
Anyone wanting to do good will find a reason to do it.

No, in those cases religion is not incidental.

The thing about prayer --As I understand it, you can't really ask G-d for something specific.

Like praying to end abortion, G-d might decide to do that by sending a plague that makes everyone sterile.

It's these people who think bad things happen as some sort of punishment; and if people are good and pray loud enough and long enough, God will reward them that I don't get. Really.

I've gotten strength in difficult times through my faith. And when God helps me with strength when I need it, that's about as powerful a thing as there is, IMO. And it's no sort of reward to me, God knows I'm nowhere near the best person I could be; it's simply there if I ask.

No single religion holds a monopoly on virtue. Thus, it can be asserted that virtue is not specifically a religious trait.

It's my opinion it isn't. And you will not ever convince me otherwise, especially since you've shown how viciously you despise, detest and hate, religion AND THOSE who are religious. But that exactly what this event was planned to do. Influence policy.

They intend to do a lot more than influence policy. The goal is absolute, theocratic rule.

Not even Christian rule -- like Breivik's disdain towards Protestants, this is a group of Protestants and post-prots who believe they are being oppressed because their preferred lifestyle is just one of many. They believe theirs should be the only option, which of course is no option at all.

If people think "fuckstain" is a nasty epithet, they should take a look at the filthy names and designs these people have for anyone not like them.

It's been a while, but after spending a week in the hospital with my wife and newborn daughter, I feel compelled to add my .02 here. Most of this video seems fairly in-line with common Christian and Catholic teaching and belief, delivery notwithstanding. The oratory here may seem a tad thick, especially at the end, but every week in Catholic mass there are prayers to end the practice of abortion and many Christians pray privately for the mothers and the unborn. I don't think that's extreme or offensive. Freedom of choice is the law of the land (generally), and that's the world we live in. I don't seek to overthrow current laws, nor do I support any sort of extreme movement, but I can lament the practice of abortion, something I feel stops human life. I dare say most reasonable Christians feel something similar.

385 Obdicut  Mon, Aug 8, 2011 4:47:18pm

re: #384 Nadnerb

And what would replace abortion, exactly? Extremely large orphanages?

Or is that not really your problem?
