Kerry’s ‘Tea Party Downgrade’ Comment Causes Outbreak of Right Wing Whining

This was what the Tea Party wanted, so why are they complaining?
Opinion • Views: 38,422

Right wing blogs are all in a huff today because Sen. John Kerry said the dreaded words, “Tea Party downgrade.”

“This is the Tea Party downgrade because a minority of people in the House of Representatives countered even the will of many Republicans in the United States Senate who were prepared to do a bigger deal,” Kerry said today on NBC’s “Meet the Press.’’

What I don’t get: Tea Party leaders wished out loud for the US to default on its debt payments, so why are they whining now when people blame them for the S&P downgrade?

I mean, they didn’t get everything they wanted; they didn’t get to cause a full-fledged economic disaster. But they did manage to force the first US credit downgrade in history, and that’s not too shabby. Maybe next time the apocalypse.

Be proud, Teabaggers! It’s what you wanted. Own it.

Kerry has a point but he's still an asshole. But it was actions he took before I was born that make him an asshole in my eyes, not his words today. Those words are well within normal bounds.

He clearly struck a nerve with that one.

It's okay or them to wish for financial catastrophe with all their little black hearts, Charles - but calling them on it? Nope, not fair.

Oh, those poor tea partiers! They really didn't want the country to fail! Really, honest! They only wanted power without any of the responsibility or consequences.

It's more of that conservative self-victimization.

They can say all the hateful, ignorant, mean-spirited things they want, but the second you call them on it, you're the hater and they're the victim.

McCain: “For them to then agree to tax increases and spending increases was obviously a repudiation of the mandate they felt they had from last November,” the Arizona Republican said.

Even if it meant uselessly spending even more on interest to service the debt stacked up over the last 11 years. Stupid and wasteful.

Though that last should not be directed towards John McCain, who was just trying to deliver an analysis of the tea Party's actions. But those actions were indeed stupid and counter-productive.

Please. McCain is as much part of the problem as the most rabid TP back-bencher. He has a responsibility to call out the extremists in his midst, and he has completely abdicated that responsibility.

Not part of the solution, etc.

It was a Wall Street Journal editorial that said that. McCain read from it on the senate floor. But while he was angry then and had gone in fighting, now the battle is over and he's analyzing it (as he was trained to do).

re: #4 Lidane

It's more of that conservative self-victimization.

They can say all the hateful, ignorant, mean-spirited things they want, but the second you call them on it, you're the hater and they're the victim.

It stems from a supremacist attitude about who they are, and what they think they are supposed to have coming to them.

If they're not permitted to rule everyone else, they are being deprived of their natural rights. This is exactly the mentality that propels demagogues like Bull Connor, George Lincoln Rockwell and Father Coughlin to power, and makes mass murderers like Breivik and jihadi suicide bombers.

42 S'latch  Sun, Aug 7, 2011 3:29:14pm

I wonder if the downgrade will have much actual effect. It might, but I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't.

"As a rule, investors demand higher interest rates for riskier loans. So if S&P's downgrade worries investors, the U.S. could be forced to pay higher interest on its debt." Jacob Goldstein for NPR

But, obviously, if there are enough investors to whom AA+ is just as good as AAA, it won't matter.

Also, if something does bother an investor enough to demand a higher interest rate, it might not be simply because S&P downgraded the U.S. by one notch. There could be many other reasons, like the fact that the U.S. economy is so anemic.

oops...
Here are the quotes: Origins of the debt showdown

For Republican leaders, there was pride in a hand well played. “I think some of our members may have thought the default issue was a hostage you might take a chance at shooting,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said. “Most of us didn’t think that. What we did learn is this — it’s a hostage that’s worth ransoming.”

McCarthy was more plain-spoken.

“Would Democrats have ever agreed if they thought the new freshman class was going to roll over? No. The freshmen made our hand so much stronger,” he said in an interview. “You had a fear of how far they would go. I’m sure the president looks back, too, and was fearful. But in negotiations, isn’t that the best thing?”

Chaffetz, who voted against both Boehner’s first proposal and the final bill, said he was well aware of how the leadership had used his and others’ willingness to let a default happen as a negotiating chip, and said he didn’t mind at all. “We weren’t kidding around, either,” he said. “We would have taken it down.”

It was a downgrade or the default. Those were the only options the GOP would allow.

67 Jaerik  Sun, Aug 7, 2011 3:38:25pm

Most economic bloggers I'm reading, conservative and liberal alike, are brushing off the downgrade as likely having little effect. At the end of the day, people need to figure out the safest place to stash their money, and Japan and Europe are both in trouble as well. As long as the US remains the least risky (and we still pretty much are), it won't matter.

That and the fact that most of the statutory interest rate adjustment policies only take effect if 2 out of the 3 major agencies issue a downgrade. The other two have said they won't.

S&P in particular is in a ton of hot water for their completely BS ratings of mortgage-backed derivatives, and their single opinion, while embarrassing for us, just doesn't come with the forceful imperative of the voice of god.

Except for that lone aberrant example our involvement in Viet Nam was nothing but sunshine and lollipops, characterized by orderly efficiency and zero dysfunction.

That may be true but its just another (unnecessary) hit we dont need right now.

The weird thing is that 1953 was far better for the underprivileged than today, assuming of course they were white. A single income family could afford a house, a car, be able to take a vacation every year and send their children to college. what malkin tells her readers:

Last Tuesday the US saw the largest one-day debt bump in history. On Friday S&P downgraded US credit for the first time in history, saying it was because the government wasn’t addressing unsustainable spending aggressively enough — and it’s the Tea Party’s fault?

what s&p actually concluded:

The outlook on the long-term rating is negative. As our downside alternate fiscal scenario illustrates, a higher public debt trajectory than we currently assume could lead us to lower the long-term rating again. On the other hand, as our upside scenario highlights, if the recommendations of the Congressional Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction--independently or coupled with other initiatives, such as the lapsing of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts for high earners--lead to fiscal consolidation measures beyond the minimum mandated, and we believe they are likely to slow the deterioration of the government's debt dynamics, the long-term rating could stabilize at 'AA+'.

Muni Market Prepares for Lost AAA Ratings

The $2.9 trillion municipal bond market is preparing for “hundreds and hundreds” of downgrades after Standard & Poor’s lowered the U.S. one level to AA+, the first-ever reduction for the country.

S&P is likely to cut its ratings on municipal debt secured by the federal government, such as pre-refunded bonds, tax- exempts backed by U.S. agencies, and credits that are most dependent on federal spending, Peter DeGroot, head of municipal research at JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM), wrote in an Aug. 5 report distributed after the federal downgrade. The New York-based ratings company said it would release a statement on state and local issuers today.

“There will be hundreds and hundreds of municipal downgrades, which will not do well to bolster investor confidence,” Matt Fabian, a managing director of Concord, Massachusetts-based Municipal Market Advisors, said in a telephone interview. “Treasuries may be able to shake off a real impact from the downgrade. Munis I’m less sure about.”

I think they've already explained themselves. They personally warned everybody involved that they would downgrade unless there was 4 trillion in deficit reduction. That was probably why Obama's grand comprimise was priced at 4 trillion. The fact that the GOP wouldn't even consider a deal to avoid downgrading our credit rating means that S&P was probably right. Do you really think enough voters can figure it out, though, especially in the face of relentless Koch-funded propaganda onslaughts?

Fox News veiwers won't but they are a very small minority. Even before this the Republicans were dropping in the polls on economic matters. A pretty solid majority said they'd blame the gop for a default, same will probably apply to the downgrade. Obama has a solid lead over Republicans. We'll have to see but I think it's going to hurt the GOP pretty bad, this was all pretty obvious.
Even worse for the GOP, the Chamber of Commerce starting publishing open letters to Republican leadership about threatening default and dragging out the negotiations to the last second. The GOP is creating an unstable environment to conduct business. It's going to cost them.

I despise him for that. John Kerry did no wrong with his words today, I agree. But his old misdeeds I cannot forgive. So i said it once and will now drop it.

I think his risking his own life to protect his boat and crew was pretty admirable...or are you talking about his protesting the war after having been there to see it first hand?

Eight days later, on February 28, 1969, came the events for which Kerry was awarded his Silver Star. On this occasion, Kerry was in tactical command of his Swift boat and two others in an eight boat formation. Their mission on the Duong Keo river included bringing a demolition team and dozens of South Vietnamese Marines to destroy enemy sampans, structures and bunkers as described in the story The Death Of PCF 43.[37] Running into an ambush, Kerry "directed the boats to turn to the beach and charge the Viet Cong positions" and he "expertly directed" his boat's fire and coordinated the deployment of the South Vietnamese troops, according to the original medal citation (signed by Admiral Zumwalt). Going a short distance farther, Kerry's boat was the target of an RPG round; as the boat beached at the site, a VC with a rocket launcher jumped and ran from a spider hole. While the boat's gunner opened fire, wounding the VC on the leg, and while the other boats approached and offered cover fire, Kerry jumped from the boat and chased the VC and killed him, capturing a loaded rocket launcher.

Yeah...unforgivable...if he was a Republican the teabaggers would be eating the peanuts out if his shit.

Well I guess I could say that the outlook on the long-term rating is negative. I could lower the long-term rating to 'AA' within the next two years if I see that less reduction in spending than agreed to, higher interest rates, or new fiscal pressures during the period result in a higher general government debt trajectory than I currently assume in my base case.

That's not entirely true. Polls have shown that public lays the blame for the recession on you know who: GWB. Whatever becomes of this remains to be seen. So I'm John Q. Public right? Well. "Bush gave us the recession and the Republicans refused to raise taxes on those rich bastards which led to this downgrade."

Sooner or later the right wing has to make up their mind on this S&P decision. On the one hand they're saying "this downgrade will mean nothing in the long run and in fact it's good". On the other hand they're saying "this is all Obama's fault!" So how can the S&P decision be a good thing or not that serious while at the same time trying to "blame Obama". That doesn't make sense.

Vote for the party that brought you flat wage earnings, an extended recession, record gasoline prices, record setting healthcare costs, the housing bubble, hurricane Katrina, destroyed overtime rules, made it more difficult to declare bankruptcy and the Great Financial Meltdown of 2008.

Oops wait a second. Bush doesn't own this even though he was the president during those times yet somehow, through magic, Obama now owns this. It's either or. Either they both own this or not. It's funny how the right tries to say "Obama owns the BP disaster" yet are quick to be defensive about the Bush administration reaction to Katrina. But yeah. Vote for the Republican Party that did such a great job from 2000-2008.

However, I also ended up as a heat casualty (it was pretty bloody hot, and in period 18th Century clothing...you really, really notice that), and I ended up getting pounced on by an ER nurse (one of the unit officers) and got covered in ice water towels and spoaked in cold water to get my core temp down. I knew I was starting to feel faint and I recognized I had heat exhaustion. My spouse drove us home a bit after the wedding.

1.

Tea Party leaders wished out loud for the US to default on its debt payments, so why are they whining now when people blame them for the S&P downgrade?

The Democrats have been no prize either. IMHO the American leadership class, with honorable exceptions, is awarding itself huge rewards and delivering terrible performance. Corporate CEOs and Wall Street banks are just the most obvious examples.

2. I sympathize with the Tea Party's limited-government goals but have concerns about some (many?) participants in the movement.

That said, I expect that tax increases will be necessary to drag us out of our financial quagmire, but I want to be damn sure that spending cuts are real before I accede to raising taxes. (The "conservatives" who are warning about military cuts: where were they when Bush was laying the groundwork for the current fiasco?)

3. Sign of the times?--The NYT led off its obituary of Hugh Carey by noting he was a liberal NY governor who brought the state's spending under control and cleaned up the financial mess left by Republican Nelson Rockefeller. RIP.

While I don't follow NY politics, it is my impression that liberal Andrew Cuomo is off to a promising fiscal start. I wish him well.

4. Warren Buffett has bluntly disagreed with the S&P downgrade. I'm not in the market at the moment, but I remember this from when I was: the man is uncanny.

Everything is fine now, but just a reminder to all to watch out in hot weather. I was pounding water all day and I watched my family like a hawk to see that they did also, but it still got to me (not that standing at attention holding a claymore sword at a 55 degree angle helped...).

It was colder back during the 1770s-1780s. The Little Ice Age was still in effect.

Yep. Still, when you read first person accounts (the one by Joseph Plumb Martin is outstanding) you find mention of British soldiers actually being killed by heat stroke in summer campaigns, and comments about the hardship of fighting in the summer from the authors point of view.

Very cool! I had two ancestors at the Battle of King's Mountain ( one of the few really large engagements mostly fought by militia with rifles) and I want to find out more about them. This hobby helps bring that to life for people today, and I love that I can share history in such a visual and interesting way.

You Teabaggers in tri-corner hats, you listen to Celtic Dragon over here! He knows far more about the Revolution than you do, and he can set you straight.

Wool uniforms, right?

Yes. One of the major innovations Napoleon introduced in his army in Egypt was to issue lighter cotton uniforms. Once issued, those saved his troops a great deal of hardship.

The Union during the Civil War mostly had to use wool, as cotton grew in the areas that had seceded. This caused great problems for the troops, who hard to march in hotter conditions than their Revolutionary War forebearers.

Yep. That was me. I take heat problems very seriously, since I have been a heat casualty before and I don't like being stuck in a hospital for hours while medics try to stick an IV in me, only to find my veins keep collapsing.

I was careful and I drank a lot of water, but I knew I was starting to get in trouble when the headache started and my vision went a bit funny. Several people said they could by looking at me that I was overheated. Everybody needs to know about heat injuries and when to get help.

Exactly. You really didn't see another significant advace in uniforms until the Second Boer War when the Brits started using Khaki uniforms that effectvely blended into the dry grass of the veldt.

It's when people don't really feel that their community is theirs, anyway. Wiki
Los Angeles Riots of 1992

Koreatown experienced the hardest crime and destruction of the ordeal. Hundreds of Korean owned businesses were looted, damaged or burnt down and an unknown number of Koreans physically attacked. By the second day of rioting, the LAPD and County Sheriff had been overpowered by the number of rioters forcing the departments to pull all units from patrol. As violent rioters next turned its attention to firefighters, the LAFD also recalled their teams. This left unchecked crime and fires which quickly expanded. The Korean American community, seeing the police force's abandonment of Koreatown, organized gun-wielding groups to protect businesses and area residents. Open gun battles were televised live as shopkeepers defended their business from the crowds of violent looters.[6]
US Marines patrol Crenshaw

Order was restored on the sixth day of rioting after a mandatory curfew, lock down, and state of emergency had been declared. At its peak, the deployment of the National Guard, brigades from the 7th Infantry Division based at Fort Ord, Marines from the 1st Marine Division based at Camp Pendleton, US Coast Guard from the 11th District, federal officers including FBI, Federal Protective Service, Immigration & Customs Enforcement and Justice Department assisted the LAPD, Los Angeles County Sheriff, California Highway Patrol, Los Angeles Fire Department, and the police departments of Bell, Bell Gardens, Huntington Park, Inglewood, Long Beach, Maywood, Vernon, Torrance, Culver City, Gardena and Hawthorne.

By the time the riots ended, 54 lives were lost, 2,383 people injured (228 critical), 12,111 arrested, 7,001 fires set, 1,400 structures destroyed, 3,100 businesses looted, and an estimated material damage of $1 billion.[7] Over 15,000 military and federal officers with 2,000 military Humvees, 20 M1A1 Abrams tanks, 5 AH-64 Apache helicopters, and the visual presence of F-15 fighters complimented the combined police presence of 16,000 officers.

In the aftermath of the riots a large percentage of Korean residents moved to Orange County and the San Fernando Valley. Many business owners did not reopen or repair their businesses, leaving the area with block after block of burnt down or abandoned buildings. Property values dipped below the notoriously poor areas of East Los Angeles and South Central.

Okay, but King was unarmed and beaten over a long span of time, on video, and the community waited over a year for a jury trial and miscarriage of justice before everything completely went shit. Compared to LA in 1992 this is a completely knee jerk response, the cause almost seems more like an excuse for a population already on a hair trigger, indicative of a frightening zeitgeist.

The state has critically underfunded these areas over the last three decades. Housing, infrastructure, training, education - business will not provide those things to these communities.
I'm not advocating acting violently against the state - but the kids who are fighting each other need to realise that the enemy to their progress isn't each other, it's the lack of jobs, the lack of housing, the lack of infrastructure, the death of a "job for life", the undervaluing by successive governments of public transport careers, and careers in the postal service - traditional routes out of poverty are being and have been eroded by the state for the last 30 years.

Job for life, Hell! That's dead in most places. The world has changed and that change simply has to be accepted. The postal service too, is becoming outdated. They can't get jobs there because those jobs are no longer needed. They need to find skills that are economically productive, not be given jobs that are obsolete.

Anyone that can lead or direct me to a place I could read more about it...I'd be very appreciative. I kind of feel like I'm in the Twilight zone.

Job for life, Hell! That's dead in most places. The world has changed and that change simply has to be accepted. The postal service too, is becoming outdated. They can't get jobs there because those jobs are no longer needed. They need to find skills that are economically productive, not be given jobs that are obsolete.

Am talking about going 30 years back when the government decided to sell off and start dismantling the postal service, the public transport services and many other sectors that were stable employers for young people.
They were given over to the private sector who slashed pay and benefits, reduced levels of service and saw employees as disposable rather than as valuable capital.

Many industries are being held together by staff on temp cntracts or short term deals - they won't turn them into full time positions because they would need to pay extra.

The economic model is broken. Short termism is the wrong way.

And coming forward to today - you can not grown private enterprise without capital - these kids have access to none. There is no market for products the economy is stagnant, new stuff is not being bought.

Note that wozzablog also said:

traditional routes out of poverty are being and have been eroded by the state for the last 30 year

It's not so easy to "find skills". Do you have any idea what it's like to live in poverty, much less grow up in it? No one enjoys being poor & underprivileged, but many don't have a clue how to escape. That traditional routes have been eroded makes it doubly hard.

re: #294 goddamnedfrank

This may be and I have no way of really understanding. But in 1965 I lived in Central CA and my mother lived in LA. To go visit her I had to take the Greyhound (no car) and since the Greyhound office was closed in her area I had to walk to an all night diner to wait for her. I think without a doubt that was the scariest walk I ever took. So, there I was about 4 or 5 in the morning, clutching my son and praying I wouldn't get shot.

It may be, looking back, that the black community had just had enough.

But who the hell knows. I just feel thankful that we ended up OK.

It's not despair.
People in despiar do not go for 42" plasma teevees and armani jeans.

from the wiki

Most commonly, nihilism is presented in the form of existential nihilism which argues that life is without objective meaning, purpose, or intrinsic value

There is no meaning in these peoples lives outside of pursuit of goods and services.

Then there's nothing to do but beat them down till things start going up again. Britain can't go back to the failures of the 1970's, neither can the US. It's either Free Market or bust. To quote Lady Thatcher "There is no alternative."

Tea Partiers are such whiners. They want to call everyone to the left of them a socialist and accuse the president and liberals of wanting to destory the country but the minute a Democrat or liberal fights back, tehy get all pissy. Bunch of babeis.

We will have to agree to differ. The free market does not work. We've had this debate before - the countries with mixed economies have lower unemployment rates on average then the USA, higher life expectancies and average wages.

re: #185 goddamnedfrank

Why do you ignore increasing revenues? The S&P specifically dinged the Republicans for refusing to increase revenues. It's like some kind of fucked up religion with you people to avoid at all costs considering or even mentioning this one, patently obvious solution.

If you think the country should be run like a business then tell me what kind of business model completely discounts the idea of raising revenues?

I know this thread has moved on, but for the record, you were apparently lumping me in with "you people" and since the crowd here seemed to like your comment I just wanted to point out this comment I made advocating increasing taxes:

Completely OT, but, I was thinking today that Republicans should drop the spending cut angle completely, leave spending levels at what they are and propose raising personal income taxes to whatever levels would be required to fully fund the budget with absolutely no more borrowing.

I wonder what those tax brackets would look like?

I was serious. Tax rates like that would probably make even you sit up and take notice.

with pleasure.

The old lefty in me says that bullshit should end and they should unite against the state.

that's a certain downding in my book.
I could have replied, arguing that they should take up something productive instead. DF already did so. all that was left for me is downding some idiot anarchist comment like that, really.

I do like how you refer to yourself as "old left"; it's that very "old left" anti-everything-existing-or-god-forbid-productive attitude I'm extremely tired of.
rational, progressive (liberal) lefties? I can get along with those just fine. this kind of anti-establishment bull***? no thanks.

so that's what you got the downding for.
satisfied? :)

still the same old blame-it-on-everyone-else mentality I was talking about. not retracting that downding, no sir.

as to 315, well, I might have gotten a bit too touchy to your posts by the time I got there, so it might be a bit disproportional. still, I'd like to explain.

there's nothing wrong with "big" government providing relatively many jobs, which might have been handled privately otherwise.
however, the assertion that privatisation "does not work" is a knee-jerk on your part, which gets a downding here, simply because it's not true.
badly done privatisation "does not work". improper privatisation "does not work. well-handled privatisation, however, can be a very good thing. Healthcare over here (the Netherlands) has benefited greatly from greater independence from government. the postal service has modernized substantially since it was privatized and, some years later, had its frikkin' monopoly janked. public transportation has actually improved (still not great, but hey. at least it's getting better). (and you should see how much better care we now have for the elderly in private, tailored institutions, at no extra cost!)
so when useful government services can be handled privately, with sufficient regulation of course, it can be a boon.
now that kind of job will be there, privately or from government agencies. does not really matter. and creating jobs in sectors where there wouldn't otherwise be any, well, that's usually a black hole for taxpayers' money.

oh and to get back to 319: never thought you were an anarchist. that "always blame someone else for your own misfortune instead of just working on yourself" mentality is more widespread, I know. sadly. still, not an ounce of respect for that. no disrespect towards you as a person, you seem pretty okay, as long as you don't get into politics ;)

//going to bed now.

re: #321 ThomasLite

When entire areas are neglected for decades the people there who have no access to chances for betterment - via employment, training or business starting capital will tend to get a might tetchy.

However - do not for a moment believe that i think the people stealing goods tonight don't have personal responsibility for their actions.

I went to the same school as many of them in Tottenham, i have mutual facebook friends with the man killed by police - he chose to carry a gun just as these people are choosing to carry televisions out of stores and then burning them. Those are irrevocable choices.

What i am getting that is that in London a gang culture has emerged over the last decade - and perhaps i didn't explain that bit - where the young people are choosing to see each other and rival districts as their enemy - the wall thats stopping them from improvement.
These kids should be turning that anger and hatred into productive change to the state mechanisms which would provide infrastructure, housing, youth groups, structured learning of trades - etc etc etc.

ah. just caught the quote before turning off the PC.

uuh, no. not really.

into productive change to the state mechanisms

aand there we go again. how about some productive change towards themselves, for a start? sorry, I'm not for one second going to believe that in the UK it would be impossible to get a basic job and get some part-time education on the side.
sorry man, I've heard that same argument often enough down here, and I know for sure it's not hard or expensive to actually get some adults' education around here. it takes some spirit, though.
and that's the problem. as long as you're blaming others, you're not going to be focusing on yourself.
breaking down a gang culture: great! but doing that by giving them something else to hate improves nothing.

However - do not for a moment believe that i think the people stealing goods tonight don't have personal responsibility for their actions.

just to be clear: I never said or thought that :)

re: #323 ThomasLite

Mate. I have qualifications - jobs are not there outside of specialist areas at the moment - the number of "general" employment opportunities is through the floor. I applied for a basic admin post a couple of months back and they closed it after 400+ applications.
There are almost 3,000,000 unemployed people in the Uk and approximately 500,000 advertised vacancies - mostly in specifically qualified areas.

Oh, for goodness sake man, of course i believe in people improveing themselves - what do you think it would take for the kind of change in attitudes i favour to come about?. It takes a realisation that what they are doing is wrong and that efforts can be more productively spent. That IS self improvement.

The training courses for people to improve their skills to get into one of the 500,000 jobs are not there, and even if people are being trained up to be security guards - firms will not hire newly qualified people. An overall approach is required - and the "bootstraps" won't cut it.

Oh, we still have Monday. The markets are going to react.

USA USA USA!

Traitors if you are against a baseless war? YEAH. Fuck the American economy? You are such assholes.

It's one thing to be against the war. It's another thing to give false "testimony" before a foreign "court". There's something primally wrong about bearing false witness against an innocent.

It's this whole thing I bring up all the time. Just because you're right about some issue doesn't make it right to try to prevail by "any means necessary".
