Michele Bachmann (R-Mars): Ultra-Fanatic

By far the craziest Presidential contender in America’s history
Wingnuts • Views: 34,727

Today’s must-read article is Ryan Lizza’s in-depth look at Michele Bachmann — the most extreme religious fanatic ever to run for President of the United States: The Transformation of Michele Bachmann.

Bachmann belongs to a generation of Christian conservatives whose views have been shaped by institutions, tracts, and leaders not commonly known to secular Americans, or even to most Christians. Her campaign is going to be a conversation about a set of beliefs more extreme than those of any American politician of her stature, including Sarah Palin, to whom she is inevitably compared. Bachmann said in 2004 that being gay is “personal enslavement,” and that, if same-sex marriage were legalized, “little children will be forced to learn that homosexuality is normal and natural and that perhaps they should try it.” Speaking about gay-rights activists, that same year, she said, “It is our children that is the prize for this community.” She believes that evolution is a theory that has “never been proven,” and that intelligent design should be taught in schools.

The best way to defeat fundamentalism abroad is to become fundamentalist at home.

I, for one, am looking forward to increased theocratic control over my daily life.

Comforting isn't it? A substantial majority of Republicans think this bigot is the best thing to ever happen to the party. There is no "big tent". There never was. However, this is the smallest I've seen that tent in my lifetime.

Michele Bachmann Pledges to Have the EPA’s “Doors Locked and Lights Turned Off”

If Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann can’t abolish the Environmental Protection Agency like she promised in June, she may just try to lock employees out of the building. Speaking at campaign rally in Iowa last week, Bachmann made it clear that she’ll do anything it takes to stamp out environmental protection efforts – even if that means padlocking the front door and switching off the breakers:

“And I guarantee you the EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) will have doors locked and lights turned off and they will only be about conservation,” she said earlier today at a campaign stop in Cedar Rapids. “It will be a new day and a new sheriff in Washington, D.C.”

Amazing. CNN has been angling for the wingnut market for about a year now. Heck, that's where Glenn Beck and Lou Dobbs were hatched.

Sorry to go OT so soon, but I have another example about why I am happy to be going back.

My mother is of the opinion that Hispanics (illegals particularly) don't want to integrate and want to transform Colorado Springs into Little Mexico. I think that worry expands to the US.

Never mind that it took the Swedish 50 years to fully integrate. Never mind the same was said of the Irish.

Then my sister chimes in and says I'm racist for being so defensive and asserting that my mom is wrong.

Screw my immediate my family. This is aggravating.

CNN is proof that 24/7 cable news always devolves into bottom-feeding, if only periodically, in order to stay profitable.

Welcome to the know-nothing party of 2012. Replace the elephant with this, because that's the attitude that the Tea Party is taking, on everything from economics to science to culture and the law.

Majority? Don't be too sure about that. She's yet to win the nomination. These economic troubles will give Romney an edge, since he's much better on fiscal matters than she is.

Really? You mean Romney is good at creating tax shelters for his own company in order to avoid paying US taxes. Plus, according to the right, wing Massachusetts is partially bankrupt because of RomneyCare™. No wait. He threw his own health care plan under the bus in order to make himself more appealing to the TGOP. So which Romney is he now?

And Bachmann is popular with the right wing. Very popular. No, she might not win the nomination in the long run but she's still very appealing to a substantial element of the right wing and registered Republican voters.

30 Gus  Mon, Aug 8, 2011 10:28:25am

But wait. Bachmann's not really a Republican.

//No true Scotsman.

31 HappyWarrior  Mon, Aug 8, 2011 10:28:41am

This is what passes for conservatism these days I suppose. Seriously Bachmann and her husband are frigging nuts.

Bachmann belongs to a generation of Christian conservatives whose views have been shaped by institutions, tracts, and leaders not commonly known to secular Americans, or even to most Christians.

This is an absolutely crucial point and cannot be emphasized strongly enough. This sub-culture has grown to enormous dimensions almost under the radar of the larger society, thanks mostly to the ready-made network provided by the fundamentalist churches that can be found in almost every community in this country.
