Stocks Plunge Again As Tea Goes Bitter

The only solution: more tea
US News • Views: 37,684

I expect to see Tea Partiers cheering this news; after all, it’s what they said they wanted.

(Reuters) - U.S. stocks plunged on Monday, taking the S&P 500 down more than 6 percent on growing fears of a recession, exacerbated by the loss of the country’s pristine triple-A credit rating.

Panicked selling on heavy volume resulted in the S&P 500’s worst day since December 2008, with every stock in the benchmark index ending in negative territory.

Great investing advice from the link:

16 Ming  Mon, Aug 8, 2011 2:10:52pm

I think that a significant part of the markets' decline is the realization that yes, many Republicans really would be very happy to keep the economy in low gear, because their top priority is to deny Obama re-election next year. Once you realize that, you appreciate how unlikely a strong economy recovery is in the foreseeable future.

Especially when you realize that the people that are trying to hold down the economy are the same people you're donating a lot of money to, if you're the US Chamber Of Commerce, for example.

Right.
That's why it was down 5.5% today. Nothing to do with the downgrade.
Yep.
Or something.

29 Bulworth  Mon, Aug 8, 2011 2:22:48pm

Apparently the S&P is affecting the market but not because it doubts the U.S. will pay its debt.

BTW, Harris Teeter makes good chili.

31 Bulworth  Mon, Aug 8, 2011 2:24:56pm

From the above link:

While the markets don't give a fig about S&P's analysis of the creditworthiness of US debt, it does appear to fear that governments will be pushed to follow S&P's bad economic advice:

The downgrade of the United States’s debt to AA+ from AAA has global implications, said Alessandro Giansanti, a credit market strategist at ING in Amsterdam. “We can see that this may force the U.S. to move more aggressively to cut spending,” he said, something that could drive the already weak economy into recession and weigh on the economies of all of its trading partners. “That’s the main driver” of the stock market declines, he said.

Krugman makes a similar point:

[M]aybe there is an S&P story — but not the one you think. Arguably, that downgrade will bully policy makers into even more deflationary, contractionary policies than they would have undertaken otherwise, which has the perverse effect of making US debt more attractive, since the alternatives are worse.

32 blueraven  Mon, Aug 8, 2011 2:27:10pm

So here is the republican response. Cantor sends a memo to republicans:

“Over the next several months, there will be tremendous pressure on Congress to prove that S&P’s analysis of the inability of the political parties to bridge our differences is wrong,” Cantor wrote in a memo Monday to House Republicans. “In short, there will be pressure to compromise on tax increases. We will be told that there is no other way forward. I respectfully disagree.”

In a statement issued shortly after Cantor’s memo, Boehner reiterated the GOP’s opposition to tax increases.

“Providing economic certainty and creating an environment in which businesses can invest and jobs can flourish must remain our number-one focus. That’s why raising taxes is simply the wrong approach,” Boehner said.

I disagree.

I think if the markets were reacting to Tea Party intransigence you would see them being more vocal....you'd see them voicing support for Democrats, their policies, and their candidates. You'd see more finger wagging.

It's really interesting to watch. I think you'd be hard pressed to find anybody on Wall Street that things Republicans are actually good for the economy......but they realize that Republicans are good for their own personal wealth and so they continue support the party that supports their "cash grab" mentality.

Yep.

All I'm saying is that if it's because of the downgrade, then the markets are acting irrationally... S&P downgraded US government bonds. US government bonds rallied today. It's not logical to say that the market was down due to the downgrade, when the downgraded securities actually rallied. The dollar was also stronger today, which you wouldn't expect after a downgrade.

Global markets are unnerved due to a variety of factors and investors are flocking towards quality. In this case US bonds (regardless of the S&P downgrade).

Your reaction is precisely what the GOP counts on. If you do not take the trouble to figure out who is right and who is wrong and instead go into a "pox on both your houses" mode, then you have effectively rewarded the intransigent party. They count on you and a lot of others reacting that way, and it works.

Your reaction is precisely what the GOP counts on. If you do not take the trouble to figure out who is right and who is wrong and instead go into a "pox on both your houses" mode, then you have effectively rewarded the intransigent party. They count on you and a lot of others reacting that way, and it works.

LOL!....how long does the period of mourning last?...in other words the GOP is banking on me asking now what?...that's odd....so now what?

Default and downgrade are two different animals. The first means that bills aren't getting paid, which means folks are going to feel the pinch when their government checks stop showing up, their government services are shuttered, and there's no government to turn to for emergencies.

Downgrade means none of that immediately, so as far as they're concerned, they dodged the bullet. They won't realize that they did so by jumping in front of a semi for a little while.

If you think you're having a bad day, google "pink pistol, penis" and find a guy who is really having a bad day....

It's a game they're winning, unfortunately.

re: #167 albusteve

maintaining what you own is dead, got it...why even try eh?

IIRC, the estimate for the cost of just repairing/renovating all the current infrastructure listed as being in dire need of both is somewhere around $1 trillion. Spending that would create a lot of jobs, put a lot of money back into the economy, and ensure that our country doesn't fall apart anytime soon.

It'd also be mana from heaven for a GOP looking to portray the sitting president as supporting "runaway spending" at a time when austerity is what's supposedly called for.

Glad I got my federal loan application in early.

I'd be happy to blame the TP for this, but I don't think it's the case. We've found out, from revised GDP numbers, that the economy has essentially not grown for the last year. But the market was rising 40%. That's a recipe for a critical correction. US treasuries are being *bought* today, not sold, despite the S&P rating, mainly because Europe's debt problems are even worse than ours.

In short, I think the market just woke up from a delusion. Better now than later.

Well, there was somebody else complaining about old people the other day.

Two makes a trend, right?

Hell, I complain about old people, and I AM one!

Don't make me a bad person or anything.

OK. Me and Red Bull just do NOT get along.

I had a cup of coffee this morning and a Diet Coke at lunch. I was fine. Half a can of Red Bull and I feel dizzy and out of sorts. Think I'll be avoiding this stuff from now on.

I hate that stuff. I can't even stand the smell of it.

Gimme coffee any day over meth in syrup form, thanks.

Yeah, I'm definitely sticking to coffee or yerba mate tea from now on.

I felt like I was drunk when I was driving home from work, and I haven't had a drink at all in months. That's just crazy to me. Never again.

My IRA lost 8% of it's value today, which is the lowest its been in a year or two.

Thanks, Tea Party. You demonstrably ruined all economic progress since the worst of the Great Recession.

re: #148 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds

At this point, no, there's really not. He gave up any chance he had of regaining the initiative when he put accept a deal, no matter how odious it was, over defaulting. The hostage takers won, and now know they can simply take another hostage when the times comes to get what they want again.

Well, on the debt ceiling, maybe - that was where the threat of default came in.

But let's say Obama proposes a modern-day PWA Bill and the TGOP takes the hostage. What are they gonna threaten Obama with? Shutting down the government? Holding their breath until they turn blue? Soiling themselves?

The debt ceiling does not come back up until 2013, so if the TGOP uses the hostage gambit again before then they're gonna wear it out.

My $.02

Remember that Republicans cheered when the US failed to win the bid for the Olympics and the Soccer World Cup, because in their seriously twisted little brains, they support whatever makes Obama looks bad, even if the result is bad for the whole country. Since when did the interests of the UNITED STATES matter to these people? Their "patriotism" (a complete misnomer) ends at the lapel pin. They hate the President more than they love their own country.
