Video: All 8 Republicans Would Walk Away from ‘10 to 1’ Deal

The Republican Party is badly broken
Politics • Views: 35,237

Of all the absurd and disturbing moments in last night’s Republican debate, this may have been the most revealing: when Bret Baier asked the candidates, “Say you had a deal, a real spending cuts deal, 10 to 1, as Byron said, spending cuts to tax increases. Who on this stage would walk away from that deal?”

And every single Republican raised their hand. You’ll never see a better illustration of the GOP’s nihilist obstructionism; unless they get absolutely everything they want, they’ll bring down the country in a blazing last stand. Sickening.

Democracy can't work without compromise.

I can see that none of these people can aptly be described as leaders. Seriously GOP get rid of the dogmatism on tax increases. It makes you look like children.

How about 20 to 1? 50 to 1?

Thanks to the GOP for further clarifying whose at fault for losing our AAA credit rating. Hopefully voters will continue to take notice.

Politics is the very art of compromise; and staking out an extreme position might sit well with the far fringe, but that wont play well in the general election or with independents who you need to win an election.

That clip essentially says these clowns (and I'm now considering every last one of them on that stage to be a clown) would refuse any compromise that gives them 90% of what they want.

It also means that Norquist has fully taken over the fiscal policy of the GOP and not in a good way.

That's not fiscal conservatism in the slightest as someone seeking fiscal responsibility would take that kind of a deal in a heartbeat. But the soundbite of accepting even a slightest hint of a tax hike is an anathema to the party candidates.

They know that any mention of increasing taxes, no matter what the ratio (1000 to 1!) will immediately mean millions of Koch/CFG dollars painting them as wife-beating child-molesting allah-worshipping degenerates.

"No, Bob, I think increasing taxes is always wrong. Always."

12 HappyWarrior  Fri, Aug 12, 2011 9:54:53am

Yes this isn't fiscal conservatism in the slightest. This is "I am afraid Groer Norquist won't talk to me if I raise taxes." Wusses the whole lot of them. If Democrats can cut social spending then Republicans need to realize that tax increases may sometimes be necessary.

13 Kronocide  Fri, Aug 12, 2011 9:55:04am

Pinching off taxation is their only hope of reducing government. All the other methods are too hard and complex.

re: #9 lawhawk

And as you note, it's not just the tea party candidates. These fools have been in the GOP, and strongly influencing policy, for decades. Norquist, dick Armey, Steve Forbes, and all the idiotic 'flat tax' pushers are the root of this sort of ideological fervor.

The entire Republican Party has turned into that group of "sovereign" nutcases you used to see holed up in some Idaho backwoods shack just waiting for someone to come bother them.

16 Kragar  Fri, Aug 12, 2011 9:56:33am

The GOP is taking the George Carlin model of leadership to heart:

"Lead, follow, or get out of the way". You know what I do when I see that shirt; I obstruct. I stand right in the guy's path, force him to walk around me, he gets a little past me, I spin him around kick him in the nuts, rip off his shirt, wipe it on my ass, and shove it down his fucking throat.

17 Bulworth  Fri, Aug 12, 2011 9:57:04am

Pretty weird cut to where Bachmann wasn't at the podium for the resumption of the debate. I guess she used up her supply of "Unconstitutional!" remarks and needed to be rewound.

2 questions for GOP candidates:

What government spending are you looking to cut funding for if not eliminate all together?

What government spending are you looking to include into the budget or increase funding to current existing programs and services?

Actually I could break these two down into simpler questions. But I like throwing a breaking ball every now and then.

Their latest line is that the founders "hated and feared" democracy because of Oliver Cromwell (or some such bullshit), and that we're really a "republic." Possibly their lamest semantic nonsense since the "Democrat party."

Prison industry is well on its way to privatization.

TSA can also be spun off - used as a way for the airlines to collude on ticket prices ("surcharges" to pay for the private security service, which they will helpfully provide, and streamline by preventing "undesirables" from traveling at all).

Etc. etc.

Right. But even if privatized the prison system would need funding from the government since it can't become a for-profit business. The only other way I can see that working would be prison labor and using the profits from that labor to sustain a private prison. Are looking at becoming the next China? Would these Republican candidates support an intense and nation wide prison labor system?

S&P points directly to GOP who said no chance of default as reason for downgrade

Standard & Poors has a specific justification for downgrading the U.S. bond rating, and it's deadly for Republicans. It wasn't just that Congress showed itself to be reckless and dysfunctional, or that the GOP shows no sign of ever ending their anti-tax jihad. It's that for a period of weeks, some lawmakers (read: Republicans) were quite literally shrugging off the risks of blowing past the August 2 deadline, running out of borrowing authority, and missing payment obligations.

"[P]eople in the political arena were even talking about a potential default," said Joydeep Mukherji, senior directior at S&P. "That a country even has such voices, albeit a minority, is something notable," he added. "This kind of rhetoric is not common amongst AAA sovereigns."

More on why I consider all of these poseurs to be clowns.

Consider Romney. He claims to be knowledgable about politics, policy, and taxes. He was a governor of a blue state - Mass. His dad was governor of a blue state - MI. He knows, or should know about compromise.

Yet, he goes along with the circus around him and doesn't recognize just how bad the optic looks - not in the primary, but in a general election. As that same question in a general debate, and both Obama and Romney (if he wins the nomination) would willingly take the deal - albeit with whatever caveats you want to put in.

Instead, he shows no spine by saying that a 90/10 split is a huge win, and good governance. Absolutism wins the day, and therefore he beclowns himself.

That and he's lying his ass off saying he wouldn't take that deal. Of the rest, I suspect one or two might not accept any deal at all, but even then, they might find that Congress (and the House) would be willing to take that deal and override whatever veto - if they really were sticking to the no-tax pledge - were threatened or forthcoming.

Even an introductory college-level economics course can leave you with the idea that taxes are always bad, if you're not paying close attention or the professor is lazy and doesn't emphasize the difference between surplus and utility, amongst other things.

I missed this segment, can anybody point it out?:

"Michelle Bachmann, even when given a second chance, seemed genuinely to believe that the federal debt ceiling applied to future spending, not bills and tax cuts the Congress had already voted to enact. Not sure which is worse: that she knows better and decided this was an applause line to push, or she really doesn't know the first thing about the Congressional budgeting process. I bet most Americans also think that holding down the debt ceiling is a forward-looking budgetary step -- ie, that it's like resolving to spend less next month. But they're still wrong. The real comparison is resolving not to pay a credit card bill when it shows up. For a national candidate not to understand this??? Seriously, this is like discovering that your doctor thinks that your trachea is attached to your spleen."

It's a way to murder government without leaving fingerprints.

If you directly oppose government services and regulation, people will see that you're responsible for the bad consequences that follow. If you simple deny funding for services and regulation enforcement, you can effectively nullify them without ever admitting that was your intention.

Even an introductory college-level economics course can leave you with the idea that taxes are always bad, if you're not paying close attention or the professor is lazy and doesn't emphasize the difference between surplus and utility, amongst other things.

I can't tell you how annoyed I get when candidates compare the government to a household or worse yet, a business. A business's main goal is to turn a profit. A government's main goal should be to serve it's people. This is obvious to anyone who spends more than 30 seconds thinking about the issue (so not the baggers).

There WAS a deal for just that, a compromised one

the next day, Obama wanted to increase the agreed upon "revenue" package

And,,, where is the budget? The last one he presented was voted down 97-0 in the Dem controlled senate!

Clearly you misunderstand the meaning of "compromise". A "compromise" is something that both parties can agree to.

If you want to make the absurd claim that Democrats would't agree to any cuts, go ahead. I will respond with a picture of your "leaders" raising their hands in unity to reject the possibility of a 10-1 cuts to revenue deal, which I believe is available online.

US Appeal Court Rules that Pres. Obama's Healthcare Law's Individual Mandate to Own Health Insurance Is Unconstitutional (story developing)

wow:

WASHINGTON - An appeals court ruled on Friday that President Barack Obama's healthcare law requiring Americans to buy healthcare insurance or face a penalty was unconstitutional, a blow to the White House.

The Appeals Court for the 11th Circuit, based in Atlanta, found that Congress exceeded its authority by requiring Americans to buy coverage, but also ruled that the rest of the wide-ranging law could remain in effect.

The legality of the so-called individual mandate, a cornerstone of the healthcare law, is widely expected to be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. The Obama administration has defended the provision as constitutional.

Obama =/= Democrats, for starters.

There's a pretty clear path for legislation. Congress makes a bill, President signs it.

Obama tried to work with Boehner because the Senate is entirely fucked up by the fact that a single Republican can prevent anything from passing, even if the Democratic majority in that chamber signed on to it.

The eventual bill was 98% percent favorable to Boehner, and everyone I know who identifies as a Democrat hates it. How is that a compromise?

Considering that the individual mandate is a major revenue point on the plan, this throws everything else into doubt. It's meant not only to persuade businesses and individuals to buy into the plan or face penalties.

These are set forth at IRC Sec. 5000A
The provision is as follows: impose an annual penalty of $95, or up to 1% of income, whichever is greater, on individuals who do not secure insurance; this will rise to $695, or 2.5% of income, by 2016. This is an individual limit; families have a limit of $2,085. There are exemptions to the "fine" in cases of financial hardship or religious beliefs.

Those penalties generate real revenues - as per the CBO and proponent budget forecasts.

I've always had an issue with how this was treated - it walks like a tax, looks like a tax, and really is a tax (heck, even the IRS is involved in collecting it), but the Administration claims it isn't.

Just a matter of time before he questions whether women should be able to vote or drive. Now on the former, I do remember Ann Coulter as well as a Republican local office seeker in Missouri saying they felt women should lose the right to vote because they didn't like women voter's overall more Democratic/liberal trends. Luap Nor has unrealistic view of the US military missions around the world in total. His isolationism doesn't take into account our world interests or the power vacuum we'd leave behind would be filled by more ambitious countries. We have many disaster relief, peace keeping, anti-piracy, and humanitarian missions besides the two wars whose scope and mission are drawing down forces and will be the sole mission of Special Operational Forces and the CIA.

Plus most people don't join the military to walk their own borders in +110 F heat with no law enforcement experience. A huge operation drawing resources that would be better spent on training and reequipping current forces. An operation that would be better handled with ground sensors linked to high powered IR cameras with quick reaction teams rather than a bulky and expensive border fence full of holes.

The Coors family has for years advocated for conservative and Republican politics. I imagine they're shocked too that they're liberals in Bryan Fischer's book. What a lameass man.

Gallup's first measure of the 2012 congressional elections shows Democrats leading Republicans, 51% to 44%, in registered voters' preferences for which party's candidate they would support in their district "if the elections for Congress were being held today."

Bryan Fischer wonders if women should be in politics

The danger to the woman here is that every time she punches back, which she must do, she hardens a little bit of her soul and sacrifices a little bit of her femininity. I'm not sure that's a good trade.

His problem sounds more like he's worried he'll have to stop punching women or HE will be getting punched back. Much better to keep women submissive and fearful.

Yeah David Barton's history books ignore him and I believe Barton's exact words were that John Knox or Calvin (forget whom) was more important to American history than Thomas Jefferson which is uh laughable for reasons I don't need to get into. At least Barton doesn't try to claim Jefferson as one of his own I guess which is at least honest though ignoring him is not.

I remember Palin being referred to by conservatives as a VPILF and GILF but it was her liberal critics who criticized her policy, experience, and intelligence that were the misogynist ones. So, yeah I have noticed that. It is bizarre. I see conservatives and to another extent liberals convince themselves that only their women can be beautiful physically. I'm calling all these GOP duds "anti-constitutionalists."...bear with me, but originally we had the articles of confederation which created such a weak and paralyzed centralized government that the founders did an end run around it, called the convention in 1787, and drafted a more effective (sort of) structure of government.

Now Perry, Bachmann, and these other twits enslaved to Grover (not the Seaseme Street Grover), want to basically shrink the government to where it almost doesn't exist just like, in my opinion, the AOC had it. Therefore they are against a stronger central Hamiltonian, and possibly even a Jeffersonian government, and want to rewrite the constitution into a model more akin to it's ineffective predecessor.

It is worse than that, the current Tea Party is nothing short of total anarchism in a very thin disguise. Eliminate government oversight of business, the environment, education, and the financial markets. Cut taxes even further even though they are already at historic post war lows to further "starve the beast" and then eliminate all social spending because "we can't pay for it."

Say goodbye to medicare, medicaid, social security, aid to families with dependent children, workers compensation benefits, food stamps, etc, etc... They are literally advocating a "Every man for himself" form of non-government as the solution to this countries financial problems.

Gee and here I always thought that "Mad Max" was fiction and not a documentary.
