Fox News Commenters Respond to Somalia Story with Deluge of Racism

What right wing racism?
Wingnuts • Views: 42,721

Yesterday someone emailed a link to a Fox News article, with a note saying that I wouldn’t believe the vile comments being posted by the Fox audience. The link: UN Says Cholera Epidemic in Somalia.

You’ll notice that today, all the comments for this article have been removed — all of them. But I saved a web archive of the page, suspecting that it might go missing. Notice that many of these comments received numerous “likes” from other readers.

Without further ado, the Fox News audience reacts to news of a cholera epidemic in Somalia (warning: racist slurs):

Somalia sure doesn’t have much going for themselves.

They’re Mus lim
They’re starving
A Cholera epidemic is right around the corner.
They have Diarrhea
They’re Mus lim
And let’s not forget the despicable Pirates.

No matter what type aid we send them, it seems to never get in the right person’s hand. Then again if they did receive food for a couple of months, they’d  gain their strength back and just make more babies.

Sometimes you just need to let nature run its course and I think this is one of those times.

M u s li ms are to busy teaching their people how to blow up white christians, you know the ones sending all the money to keep them alive…..If it wasn’t so sad, this would allmost be hysterical. These are m u s li ms that are starving and not one m u s li  m country around to help them out. That’s what Africa gets for throwing out all the whites and than destroying every farm that these whites have build. Africans are to s t u p i d  to run anything least of all a country. Look at the USA. Only 2 1/2 years in office and the damage is unbelievable!

There’s a lot more in this vein. When I captured the page there were 78 comments, and almost all of them were like this. Notice how they use creative misspellings, add spaces, and run words together when they post racist slurs, to get around searches and automatic word filters.

The racist ugliness at Fox News is indistinguishable from the comments at the infamous neo-Nazi site Stormfront.

Related: My wife is laughing hysterically because a Fox News analyst, talking about the debt, said "You don't want to shoot your wad too soon".

I know it has an older meaning, but I rather think the modern one has overtaken it.

Reminds me of an actual interview with an anti-Chunnel activist back when the Channel Tunnel was under construction in the 80s. The project had attracted a veritable zoo of opposition, ranging from extreme nationalists to Earth First style extreme environmentalists. The reporter asked the activist if his group was anti-French. He replied (as closely as I can remember), "Of course not, we greatly admire French architecture and art, French food, French culture and tradition. It's just the goddamn French people we can't stand."

The Fox comments are about on par with the Yahoo and AOL comments, as far as I can tell.

From Yahoo, on an article about Somalia asking for guards for the food convoys:

Last time we sent food these people shot at us. Let them starve.

Somalia wants?????? WHEN DOESN'T SOMALIA WANTS SOMETHING?????? THE SAME &%#$&@$ WAY OUR SOLDIERS WANTED HELP, AND THEY TURNED THEIR BACKS ON OUR MILITARY...OUR SOLDIERS WERE DRAGGED THRU THE FILTHY STREETS....SOMALIS CAN EAT SH$T AND DIE FOR ALL I CARE!!!!!

Send the blacks in this country to guard as it is THEIR Heritage.

BlackHawk Down. These people are worse than animals.

You just can not trust those peace loving Islamic radical for anything good . If theyare not killing each other they are stealing from each other . In somalia they are stealing food out of children's mouth.

Of course nobody thinks that it just sprang out of nowhere; what it shows was that people weren't constrained by any sort of decency, dignity, or wisdom, but just by disapproval.

So, in ye olden days, if you wanted to be racist you had to hang out at the general store with the other racists and race it up. Now it's basically acceptable to do on Fox News.

I've had people call me a kike to my face, but that's different than people just having a good ol' conversation about how all kikes should die.

Okay. I think that the level of racism shown on Fox News, for example, is larger now, with Obama as president, than it was before. That might be just because they've got a black person to talk about regularly.

Likewise, I think that the racists in this country have been emboldened by the acceptance that that racism has found in the GOP, Fox, and other right-wing media networks, and that that's made them more comfy and open about it over the past while.

It's possible, of course, that this is just my attention drawn towards it or not, but the SPLC has noted the rise in the racist rhetoric and affiliation as well.

Some do. Some of the nastier sort will never say a racist thing in their lives, but will still take racist actions. They're rather the more difficult to deal with. My grandpa didn't get hired at Berkeley because of his race and was told so to his face, but a lot of people don't get hired because of their race but never know that was the factor.

I'm not sure what you're arguing. Fox News is just noise. The level of racism, as you call it, is only growing louder to people who don't deal with it in their personal lives, i.e. offline, in our faces.

I live in California, which the SPLC has listed for years having around 80 designated hate groups, including NPP and NOI. But overwhelmingly white bigot groups. Have for most of my live.

The noise level is not new.

Well, sure, the personal touch sort of racism probably remains at a steady level. But I don't agree that Fox is just noise. It's influential, and it means that someone may have to hear yet another tired bit of racism that they otherwise wouldn't have-- because it's coming from the TV, now, not just the asshole on the bus.

I live in California, which the SPLC has listed for years having around 80 designated hate groups, including NPP and NOI. But overwhelmingly white bigot groups. Have for most of my live.

Yes. But according to the SPLC, but the activity and the membership of those groups are on the rise. I'm not saying that the groups are new, or the views they hold are new, or even that people who feel the way those groups do are new, but that they're, too use the Bushism, 'emboldened'.

Yes. But according to the SPLC, but the activity and the membership of those groups are on the rise. I'm not saying that the groups are new, or the views they hold are new, or even that people who feel the way those groups do are new, but that they're, too use the Bushism, 'emboldened'.

Thing is, I don't need SPLC to tell me about the prevalence of eliminationist bigots. So they've once again come out of the closet...I offer they aren't all that closeted to begin with.

It's that age old question, especially in the internet age. Are there more of them now, or have they always been there and are now "becoming emboldened", some combination of the two. I say the two are not mutually exclusive and yes, they have definitely always been there, every bit as virulent and nasty as Fox comments.

Okay then. I think that the rise in activity in hate groups is significant.

It's that age old question, especially in the internet age. Are there more of them now, or have they always been there and are now "becoming emboldened", some combination of the two.

Oh, I was never saying there were more of them now. Maybe that's the confusion.

Right. I'm not sure why you thought that I was saying they weren't there, but I wasn't.

Sure, we have. Though I'd argue the civil rights movement started before the 1700s, with the anti-slavery action of some of the dissenters in the 1600s, but it depends what you call a civil rights movement.

Honestly, I say the civil rights movement started some time in 1619 with the people who arrived here against our will.

We may or may not agree on what comprises it, but the point was more that we have been doing this for a very, very, very long time.

I think, like everyone else, they are finding more people to discuss their interests with in the Internet.

If you live in some areas, are brought up in some social circles, you will rarely meet opposition when you express racist ideas.

If you live in others, you will be frequently shut down and socially shunned if you express them. Your relatives will be embarrassed. Girls will shrug you off. It's better to not talk about.

Except that, on the Internet, the racists, like everyone else from the pedophiles to the collectors of rare antique quilting hoops, can find more of their own kind to talk to. And even those who are not restrained in their own real world communities can find more fuel for their fire here.

It makes some difference. How much of a one, I don't really know.

Of course, what I notice is that this has relatively little to do with Fox specifically. Most news outlets have comments like these.

Referring to people as animals has a long and dishonorable history. Trotsky did it to justify Red atrocities in the Russian Civil War, Goebbels did it to justify the Holocaust, and Pol Pot did it to justify the emptying of Cambodia's cities and the subsequent killing of educated people.

When someone talks like that, beware.

Dehumanization has an ancient and dishonorable history. I recommend "Less Than Human" and/or the linked story on the book.

I don't think we are either. What I'm pointing out is that the number of racists and the behavior of racists are very different concepts and problems. So, I really do think we're seeing a spike an acceptable, open, on-air, pseudo-intellectual, nativistic (though ironically applied) racism. It's by no means unprecedented.

The Birchers used to be shunned in the GOP. Now they're back inside. Sure, when they were shunned, there were still shitloads of racists in the GOP, but I do feel that there's a difference in openly rubbing shoulders with the people who claim all blacks are communist tools and their political power must be broken, and people who make snide statements about welfare queens. The latter are terrible shitheads who impede progress, but the former can lead to much, much darker crap if their shit really takes hold in public discourse.

But again, my own experience is by no means unique. I come from a long line of people with similar, and far more harsh experience, and that's even after factoring in the queer angle.

Er... I'm sorry, but we seem to be constantly talking at cross purposes. My point was that the sort of racism in the South and North was different, and that that actually matters; it takes different efforts to combat different sorts of racism. I haven't. Is it fiction? My friends get on me for this, but I'm not into fiction unless it from like 18th c continental Europe :/

Well, that's a rather limited purview. Yes, it is, and in it there's an academic order of monks who stay separate from the workaday world for ten, a hundred, or a thousand years at a time. So, when they open their gates and re-encounter the world, they may find any number of different reactions. So, before they do, they interview some people from the outside world to find out their current attitudes. Do they think the monks have special powers? Do they think they have secrets worth plundering? Do they think that they're amiable buffoons not to be trusted with important tasks, or cunning, ruthless masterminds? Etc.

Similarly, someone who thinks that Jews are destroying Western culture through liberalism and must be stopped are a different sort of beast to someone who thinks that Jews and white people should have as little to do with each other as possible, and avoids Jews.

They're both bad, they both suck, but it's important to differentiate between them.

However, the fact that you chose to insult one specific religion doesn't make it acceptable.

Well, I don't personally abide by the silly tenet that it's acceptable to insult a set of ideas only if it doesn't have the label of "religion" smacked on it.

Are Buddhists vege?

Many are. It's not uniform throughout the faith.

Most interesting thing I have learned about Tibetan Buddhism is that while it is sometimes necessary to kill an animal for food (they're not exactly in the grain belt), they believe it's better to kill something big, like a cow, than something small like a fish. More people get fed from one death, instead of from many.

When I first heard this, this boggled my Western mind, and I don't often go around saying "Wow, man, I was like, so enlightened by the cool wisdom of the East, it's like, totally different from the way white people think", because I know people who do, and they're idiots. But I realized that I had this entire hierarchy in my head of people on top, then big carnivorous mammals, then big herbivores, then little mammals, then birds, then fish--and this utterly set that on its ear. It's not the size of the animal or its connection to humanity at all. The lives are all the same size, or at least, the same import.

My sensei came from an obscure Shinto group that believed that we should only make use of things that have lifespans shorter than us, whenever possible. So they didn't use stone. Metal they had some bizarre workaround for-- like, it'd been changed by the process of smelting it, so while they couldn't mine ore, they could use metal. Kind of convenient, but religion often is.

Meh, people deserve courtesy. Ideas don't, and religions are just ideas. "Courtesy" for everything is the death of rebellion and the soul.

Aimed at Jews, no. Jokes about YHWH, yah, equally entertaining. If people take jokes about their deities of choice as personal insults, that's really their personal problem.

Right, Charles pointed out the comments as vile & racist becuase they were just about ideas, they weren't bigoted comments aimed at people.

Do you make those kinds of "jokes" in real life social situations? Somehow I doubt it as it would quickly become your problem, not just the listener's.

The "Manichaeian" comment was in response to something you brought up on your own, in your own words a "crude" north/south difference on racial attitudes. Manichaeian is a nice term. Lazy thinking is a better one.

You have a background in northern CA yourself, where your father was discriminated against. So I see no reason for the disconnect.

When you are that "someone" they do it to, it's not a separate issue from "when you can get away with it" at all, not on a personal level, and not regarding any other numerical minority, either. That's abstracted thinking.

Er, then you don't understand what Manichaeian means. It's not just about any division; it needs to relate to a (heh) light/dark division, a necessary and twinned struggle between dually matched, cocreative forces. It doesn't just mean any two things that you're comparing.

You have a background in northern CA yourself, where your father was discriminated against. So I see no reason for the disconnect.

When you are that "someone" they do it to, it's not a separate issue from "when you can get away with it" at all, not on a personal level, and not regarding any other numerical minority, either.

Really, that sentence doesn't make any sense no matter how many times I read it. I'll assume the problem is me.

All I'm saying is that tolerance of racism in the public venue has increased. That doesn't at all relate to individual acts of racism. It really is a separate issue, since the racism in the public venue isn't actually directed against people in particular.

I've certainly experienced my share of anti-Jew racism, even though I 'pass' just fine. But Glenn Beck's propagandizing of anti-Semitic authors is a lot more worrying to me than an idiot in Southie calling me a Jewboy.

Part of the folly of Manichaeian thinking is the idea that there are two sides.

There are far more than just two sides in anti-Black sentiment and practice. North and South ... "crude" is a euphemism.

But Glenn Beck's propagandizing of anti-Semitic authors is a lot more worrying to me than an idiot in Southie calling me a Jewboy.

Yeah see, "Southie" references tell me you really do have to rethink those crude ideas about north vs south racism.

Southie in the 70s made the south look like Marlo Thomas, Free to be You and Me CD reprints at Amoeba Records in 1998.

Moreover, the anti-Arab racism is certainly at a new, vicious height, one higher than it's ever been, even immediately post 9/11. Anti-Muslim, as well, of course.

Well, this is true. And complicating matters is the bigot's conflation of goosesteppers like Farrakhan with all us blkx who look alike to them. No, that is not a gratuitous reference.

It's further complicated by not enough people smacking down the Farrakhans of the world.

One issue there is people like Herman Cain, who have an axe to grind against Muslims in general based on Christian-supremacist views. Few Black people are dumb enough to throw in with Christian-supremacist because we know what that means.

No, that's really not a good description of Manichean thinking at all. It really has to do with those sides being aligned against each other in a symmetric way. I'm sorry, but saying that comparing a Northern and Southern aspect of racism is Manichean thinking is in no way, shape, or form correct. It might have some vague semblance of sense if I was claiming that the North was awesome on race relations and the South sucked-- but I wasn't.

There's more to American "racism" than the north/south dualism. Now's your chance to explain yourself on the "crude" comment, since you evidently believe I'm too dull to have caught what you originally mean.

Well, that really wouldn't fix the problem.

So, you see, your joke fell flat because you're kind of ignorant about what you're trying to mock; it's hard to poke fun at something when you don't really have a grasp of it.

Well, it's hard to rebut a passing comment when you don't really have a grasp of its intent. It was a passing flippant comment, not a master's thesis on comparative religions.

If you're attempting to mock sacred (or profane) animals, make sure that what you're talking about is actually a sacred or profane animals, or you just wind up seeming ignorant and possibly bigoted.

Well, caring about political correctness isn't really my strong point. In fact, it's not really a skill I care to hone at all. Life's too short to worry about such trivialities.

Went out for a walk down Pike Place Market way. Got one of those blended cream things from The First Starbucks (and yes, there was a line that went past the sidewalk) and then happened to walk into one of those "counter-culture" book stores.

Realizing what kind of product I held in my hand, I slowly backed away.

So how's your evening?

re: #271 OhCrapIHaveACrushOnSarahPalin

There's more to American "racism" than the north/south dualism.

Well, the North and South thing isn't a dualism-- especially not a Manichean one. That's what I meant by 'crude'-- as in, even though it's a mass over-generalization, one can very crudely say that racism in the South was more (but just more) violent than in the north, with the number of lynchings and other murders much higher, and in the North was less violent, and more ostracism, ghettoization, et al.

So, the approach to combating racism when what you're dealing with is, say, a silent conspiracy not to rent houses in an area to blacks and Jews, and when what you're dealing with is guys driving up to the house of a black man who looked at a white woman and shooting him, is going to be different.

So yes, go ahead once again, and tell me how to properly understand and interpret today's shytty race relations. Pretend I'm someone who looks just like you.

No thanks. I'll just explain my own interpretation. I'm under no delusion I'm the Master of Race who can interpret this cloudy water perfectly.

I really have no idea what you're on about at this point. You really seem like you're having an argument with an entirely different person, someone who thinks that the North was pure and good in race relations and the South was evil and terrible (which is what it would be if it were a Manichean division).

Well, according to those people's own f'ed up stereotypes, anyway.

Yes, and according to stuff like traditional Jewish dress, which really isn't often worn by non-Jews.

Southie was no picnic in the park in the 70s, especially for Black students. This is a fact, nice or not.

Um, yes. I know. It's still not a picnic. That was kind of my point.

Vet ID holders cannot vote?

Ann McGeehan, director of the Secretary of State's elections division, said last week at a seminar in Austin that photo ID cards issued by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs are not acceptable forms of military ID to vote, according to a recording provided by the Texas Democratic Party.
....
Passed after Gov. Rick Perry declared voter ID an emergency issue in the last session, the strict bill is touted by Republicans as a way to reduce voter fraud but decried by Democrats as an effort to lower voter turnout among minorities and the elderly, disabled and poor.

I'm not sure how many times I have to state it but here goes time number seven hundred and eighty two. Vet ID holders cannot vote?

I said it before and I'll say it again: Denying the use of DoVA ID cards makes no sense from a voter fraud standpoint. The VA is careful in making sure those meet anti-fraud laws and does require a good bit of documentation before handing them over. So the only explanations for their exclusion are:

A. Negligence
B. Malice

I really hope its A, because if its B the authors of that bill are going to be in a great deal of hot water. To act against our veterans is utterly stupid for Republicans. Not only does it hurt those who have defended our freedom, but it also trashes the party's pro-military image. It is both cruel and stupid.

Well, they won't do it know, and they shouldn't have done it in the first place. They need to alter that bill posthaste. As it is there'll be fallout:

We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind",
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind.

You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!

My parents are not from NC. My father was born to sharecropping farmers in Bumfarkansas, and my mother to, er, what whites call the help in south central Florida. They met in upstate NY, and moved to SoCA in the mid 60s right after marrying.

Better opportunities for young Black professionals, and all that. Once you got past the "No Blacks" signs on the rentals.

Sorry, I read your post wrong. Excuse me.

Fan of Inland Empire, the David Lynch film? Most intense non-drug induced trip ever.

Next to Mullholland Dr, Inland Empire is my favorite Lynch film. You might like this - my undergrad German Lit prof is the one who messed me up on David Lynch. Brought messed up me on as a messed up research asst for some messed up paper she was doing on one of his messed up films. Never been the same, since; can't say I regret it, either.

I wasn't inferring your name was in response to the Rachel Corrie situation, I'm sorry it probably seemed that way now that I look at my comment in retrospect. I just thought it was an apt example (given your user name) of something sarcastic that's inappropriate.

Well.... ok..... don't go into attack mode dude until you know the story. I have a sock on here because I felt so uncomfortable at the time...... but my sock name was so stupid I reemerged as Mr Pancakes after the St Pancake guy left.

It's a slap at Islam, not Muslims. Like I said, I have no issue with insulting or mocking or poking fun at religions, which are just sets of ideas. All the great religions of the world deserve a major deliberate "slap" now and again.

People who are secure in their own beliefs can poke fun at themselves. People who are insecure feel compelled to mock others.

Of course, people who mock others are also assholes.

re: #316 Dark_Falcon

No offense, Dark, but I think that since President Obama assumed the office of POTUS, the GOP pretty much has dropped any pretense of keeping a sane "image", as evidenced by the ascension of the TP and the bigots/xenophobes bringing it all out in the open (see the subject of this thread, for example). This situation reeks of "to make an omelet, you gotta break a few eggs" to me, that's how cynical I've become of the GOP.

/to paraphrase Reagan, I didn't leave the Republican Party, the Republican Party left me (however, it doesn't necessarily mean I automatically became a Democrat)

Yeah he did an amaaaaazing job with both, I thought. There aren't a lot of films with way-east of LA as the subject, or at least in the title (kinda for obvious reasons.) Though, many were filmed there. Tested there, too.

I mean, when I was growing up there, it was just the sticks, and in another part, the cows. And the prison. It's much more built up now, but it's just McMansions, socalled light industry and Monster Trucks/Racetracks.

KKK land/teabagger country.

363 Tiny Alien Kitties are Watching You  Sun, Aug 14, 2011 7:42:28pm

I have to admit to finding it hard to muster any major sympathy for the plight of the Somalians myself. While I know that the vast majority of those affected are innocent civilians I also know that past aid has routinely been stolen/extorted/misdirected, aid workers killed in more than a dozen incidents, not to mention the recent past experience of the U.S. military forces and the ongoing Piracy.

That the U.N. continues to attempt to aid them at all is a testament to forgiveness, understanding, and compassion amongst humankind. It is a good thing for them that all of humanity is not as primal and vicious as many among them apparently aspire to be.

People who are secure in their own beliefs can poke fun at themselves. People who are insecure feel compelled to mock others.

People who are REALLY secure in their own beliefs mock the beliefs of both themselves and others. Mocking people is not really a good thing to do. Mocking beliefs is fine - beliefs don't have rights, only people do.

Of course, people who mock others are also assholes.

Well, since you just mocked me with a vulgar term, I will not contest your hypothesis. See, we can agree!

I have fond memories of the area...... my brother used to drive down when I was a kid and pick me up, we'd spend the weekend in Riverside watching movies and occasionally eating ham grinders. My folks lived in Yuciapa and Cali Mesa .... my sister lives in Redlands........ spring time there is breath-taking with the snow capped mountains. We'd head up to Oak Glen in the winter to play in the snow.

I don't even know what a fundamentalist Buddhist would be. A Tibetan monk who wanted the return of theocratic slavery, I guess. Doubt they'd shirk from eating chicken.

Buddhists do not believe in "fundaments". That's not to say that there weren't nasty traditions of buddhism. Japanese Zen also had a lot of bad aspects. "Zen at War" by Brian Victoria is a good read for everybody with a little too loft of an idea of the religion (it's not a "semi-religion", btw).

re: #184 OhCrapIHaveACrushOnSarahPalin

Part of noting those specific facets is the acknowledgment that for the targets, nothing about them acting out their pathological race rage directed at us is new or novel. That includes eliminationist sentiments on internet message boards.

Sorry, but that is also not true. There is a difference between someone saying "Hitler would have gassed you" and sending someone directly into the gas chambers, as there also is a difference between leaving a noose at a colleague's work place and actually lynching that person. Some generations, luckily, never have to experience the latter variants because the former are looked down upon socially. When more and more people think they can get away with more and more things, more and worse acts will be committed – and this will make a difference to the victims. It's rather simple, really.

You seem to assume that the constant racism in society never meaningfully changes quality or intensity and that it also does not matter how much in the background or forefront it is. That is demonstratably false.

I don't think we are in a Nazi Germany situation.

Neither did a majority of Germans in the beginning. And many failed to see it until the very end.
