And Now for Some Cat Pictures (or, Advanced Scientific Cats)

The first generation ever born in captivity via artificial insemination
Images • Views: 32,289

It’s been a little while since we last visited the Internet Center for Advanced Studies of Baby Animal Cuteness, Zooborns, so I think it’s time for a couple of photos of the first-ever rare Pallas’s Cats born via artificial insemination, at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden: First Ever Birth of Pallas’ Kittens with the Help of Advanced Science.

(Click the pictures to embiggen to maximum cuteness.)

Sheesh. Does it have to get that difficult? Pallas could just go down to the local Humane Society, if he wanted cats that bad.

(Yes, I know, you don't need to explain it to me.)

Those big eyes are to lull you into reaching out to pet them so they can then eat your fingers.

And the cuteness, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the baby Cats of Pallas on a website called "Zooborns";
And their eyes have all the seeming of a demon that is dreaming,
And there's catnip-addled scheming as they frolic near the door;
And the cat hair in that pile that now lies floating on the floor
Shall be vacuumed — evermore!

44 jaunte  Mon, Aug 15, 2011 6:22:37pm

Steve, I can find just about anything funny, unless it targets somebody specifically. This bit did no harm to anyone and showed a fair bit of imagination. If your son doesn't like some forms of humour, that's his choice, but frankly it's neither here nor there as far as this site is concerned.

Warren Buffet Tells US Govt to stop coddling Billionaires..........

OUR leaders have asked for “shared sacrifice.” But when they did the asking, they spared me. I checked with my mega-rich friends to learn what pain they were expecting. They, too, were left untouched.

While the poor and middle class fight for us in Afghanistan, and while most Americans struggle to make ends meet, we mega-rich continue to get our extraordinary tax breaks. Some of us are investment managers who earn billions from our daily labors but are allowed to classify our income as “carried interest,” thereby getting a bargain 15 percent tax rate. Others own stock index futures for 10 minutes and have 60 percent of their gain taxed at 15 percent, as if they’d been long-term investors.

These and other blessings are showered upon us by legislators in Washington who feel compelled to protect us, much as if we were spotted owls or some other endangered species. It’s nice to have friends in high places.

Last year my federal tax bill — the income tax I paid, as well as payroll taxes paid by me and on my behalf — was $6,938,744. That sounds like a lot of money. But what I paid was only 17.4 percent of my taxable income — and that’s actually a lower percentage than was paid by any of the other 20 people in our office. Their tax burdens ranged from 33 percent to 41 percent and averaged 36 percent.

I mistyped the cores go to 100% not 199. Duh. But yeah this is kinda nuts. Tonight I'll check the heat sink, firs6t to make sure it's well attached and second to scope out the water cooling install.

re: #98 Rightwingconspirator

I'm not at all sure about overclocking, it's a stock machine. What is MoBo?

Many new motherboards have the ability to overclock the cpu and ram, as well as boost current. Some, such as a few Asus boards will boost the cpu to higher clock speeds than the cpu is rated for at boot up. Boards with the Intel chipset are designed to boost the cpu over short bursts, but some boards take this too far and boost long enough for the cpu or ram to overheat.

Check in the BIOS to see if overclocking is enabled.

The argument is that the two end up allied, and sometimes they do as witness "Queers for Palestine", who often protest beside Islamists who would murder the gay activists in a minute if they (the Islamists) ran the government.

That having been said, normal socialism is not like Islamism at all, nor secularism. Communism is like Islamism in the sense that they are both totalitarian philosophies.

Well shit, why not bring up the fact that white supremacist groups have offered the Taliban and AQ help. I am sorry DF but I have seen people on the right try to act like secularism/Islamism are similar ideologies. Silly since it comes from people who want religion and state more closer linked. And secularists as you know want religion and state as far apart as possible.

Hmmm makes sense, I know his folks were originally from Pennsylvania. Hard to really see him as a Southerner even though he did do better in the South than any Republican candidate to that point in teh 20th century though no doubt his war hero status helped and the fact he was a little less assertive on civil rights than Willkie and later Dewey.

Yep, I do love hearing from Newt Gingrich that secularism is going to bring on Shariah la though. If Shariah were ever to come which it won't as it stands now, it would be due to idiots like Gingrich who think Separation of Church and State is bad.

Obama:

"I think that we forget when [Martin Luther King Jr.] was alive there was nobody who was more vilified, nobody who was more controversial, nobody who was more despairing at times. There was a decade that followed the great successes of Birmingham and Selma in which he was just struggling, fighting the good fight, and scorned, and many folks angry. But what he understood, what kept him going, was that the arc of moral universe is long but it bends towards justice. But it doesn’t bend on its own. It bends because all of us are putting our hand on the arc and we are bending it in that direction. And it takes time. And it's hard work. And there are frustrations."

It wasn't racism, really. Racism assumes level of equality. Slaves were work animals, but different, in that they could do more than pull a wagon or a plow. But they weren't really *human*, which is why the 3/5th count was included when determining populations for Congressional Districts.

Slaves, more than anything else, were property, and quite valuable property. Poor white dirt farmers didn't have chattel slaves. Couldn't afford them. So Johnny Reb was convinced to go to war for States Rights when it was really to protect the property of the rich ruling class.

Why does this seem to have resonance today?

Hmmm...

Can't put my finger on it...

Ron Paul supporters decry media neglect

Ron Paul finished just 152 votes behind Michele Bachmann in the Ames Straw Poll, but from the headlines and TV news coverage, it’s hard to tell he even showed up.

With the exception of The New York Times and The Des Moines Register, most major newspaper headlines didn’t even mention his name in their reports of Saturday’s contest. Nor was he anywhere to be found on the Sunday morning talk shows.

By Monday’s second-day stories, Paul had disappeared from the prevailing narrative of the Republican primary race altogether, as consensus coalesced around the dynamics between Bachmann, newcomer Rick Perry and front-runner Mitt Romney.

“We are certainly disappointed, and we think that people are missing a very big story here,” said Jesse Benton, Paul’s campaign manager. “You look at ’07, and Mike Huckabee was able to turn what was a very weak second place — Mitt Romney had 4,516 votes and Huckabee had 2,587 — into a huge national story.”

The Texas congressman’s campaign and supporters blame the curious lack of coverage on the mainstream media’s bias. Though some charge this bias is of the typical liberal variety, most complain it is more of a bias against anyone the media consider an “unelectable” candidate.

Thousands of highly motivated, very wired Paul supporters have been letting the media know their displeasure in no uncertain terms — sending emails to reporters, filling comments sections below columns and even leaving messages on the voicemails of experts quoted in stories they don’t like.

That last bolded paragraph is what freetoken once called "The Dance of the Paulian Troll". The Paulians are mad that the media persists in seeing Ron Paul as the nutcase he is.

That last bolded paragraph is what freetoken once called "The Dance of the Paulian Troll". The Paulians are mad that the media persists in seeing Ron Paul as the nutcase he is.

One more excerpt from this column, and this one is funny:

Paul’s supporters, who run an array of blogs and Facebook groups unaffiliated with the Paul campaign, have been trying to counter this attitude by flooding the inboxes and comments sections of the mainstream media journalists writing about the campaign.

Conservative columnist Michael Walsh became a target for his New York Post column “A two-man race,” and noted the phenomenon Monday on the National Review Online.

“And the winner is … Ron Paul! That, at least, is the conclusion of most of the commenters so far on my New York Post column today,” he wrote, later adding, “Well, I hate to break the news to them, but Ron Paul has about as much chance of becoming president as Lyndon LaRouche.”

Speaking just now in Iowa, Perry said, “If this guy (Bernanke) prints more money between now and the election, I dunno what y’all would do to him in Iowa but we would treat him pretty ugly down in Texas. Printing more money to play politics at this particular time in American history is almost treasonous in my opinion.”

Oh, and another call-out of Obama's patriotism...

In response to a question from Danny Yadron of the Wall Street Journal, who asked Perry if he was suggesting that Obama didn’t love this country, Perry replied: ” I dunno, you need to ask him.”

Well, if he can, he'd better get on it.

So far, he's issued a veiled threat to the chairman of the Fed and questioned Obama's patriotism - twice.

And that's just his first day. I'm wondering how he'll try and top it tomorrow. Maybe challenge Joe Biden to a fist fight or something.

TBH, I don't. AFAIC, these are just more of the same recycled frothing-at-the-mouth bigots that have been crapping all over the country since the Know-Nothings. After the stupid tea party, they'll just pop up in another paranoid, seething, sniveling incarnation every bit as venal as the last.

They won't go away, that's true, but right now, they have enough critical mass within the GOP to get elected to sabotage government, and I'm imagining that would change if the TP golden candidate is just flattened at the polls

I want to say Obama would beat Perry easily but I am reminded of two things. First, Perry's won three statewide elections in the second biggest populated state in the union including once in a very Democratic year, 2006 and he beat off a primary challenger who happened to be a long time US senator this year as well. I am also reminded of a story my Dad told me about Ronald Reagan. Now, to the conservatives and right of center folks here, I am not suggesting that Rick Perry and Ronald Reagan are the same ideologically so I don't mean offense. Anyhow, it must have been when Reagan primaried Ford or right before the 1980 campaign. My dad was driving with my grandfather and they saw a Reagan sticker. My dad whom was in his 20's at the time laughed at it and wondered who in their right mind would vote for Ronald Reagan. My grandfather, I guess because he saw how rightward the Republican party had moved and such warned him that it could happen. Well, you all know what happened in 1980. My grandfather passed away in the winter of '79. Today, a man like my grandfather would be derided as an ebil socialist by Perry, Bachmann, and the people who comprise the modern right because as an arbitrator, he was able to empathize with labor union employees.

First the upding. Now the sarcasm:

Your Grandfather was obviously a Socialist for seeing two sides to anything.

End sarcasm mode.

I think it's pitiful that this country has come to this. A small group, completely uninterested in the Greater Good, has paralyzed the Government into not doing what any human with a basic understanding of macroeconomics, and is able to add and subtract, knows needs to be done. Expenditures are now outstripping by 40%. If you cut *all* discretionary spending, you still couldn't make up the difference. The *only* way to do it is new revenue.

And the world is watching to see if we will commit economic suicide. The money is there.

Madness.

Ha, thanks. Never knew the man unfortunately. I agree though, it is madness. I see candidates like Perry, Bachmann, and others who clearly do not understand economics at all and whose only policy seems to be cut taxes/social programs. Yet at the same time, they want to spend more on defense, build more prisons, etc. Where do they think money comes from? This has been a problem IMO for the right since Bush and his advisers thought it would be a great idea to insist on tax cuts during wartime.

315 goddamnedfrank  Tue, Aug 16, 2011 1:33:17am
"If we discovered that, you know, space aliens were planning to attack and we needed a massive buildup to counter the space alien threat and really inflation and budget deficits took secondary place to that, this slump would be over in 18 months," he said. "And then if we discovered, oops, we made a mistake, there aren't any aliens, we'd be better--"

"We need Orson Welles, is what you're saying," Rogoff cut in.

"There was a 'Twilight Zone' episode like this in which scientists fake an alien threat in order to achieve world peace," Krugman said. "Well, this time, we don't need it, we need it in order to get some fiscal stimulus."

Of course, Krugman is just using a space invasion as an example. But that hasn't stopped some people from framing his comments as part of a giant conspiracy by a shadowy group of elites to enslave the world through a fake alien attack.

Dr Michio Kaku, renowned physicist, author and the apparent mouth piece for the scientific dictatorship that is the NWO, talks on the corporate media about the likely hood of an alien invasion.

Project Blue Beam is a very controversial subject and concerns the government carrying out a fake alien invasion to forward the agenda of creating their much sought after One World Government.

What better way to make the people surrender the last of their rights and freedoms then to be presented with an unbeatable enemy from another world??

That GoV article is a real trip:

If the act of strutting your stuff results in an equal reaction, a girl must take at least half the responsibility for whatever transpires as a result. And if she can’t comprehend that basic contract with life, then she needs a keeper because she’s not a mature adult.

Nice. Women who dress 'provocatively' are guilty of 'sadistic provocation'. Doesn't occur to these asshats that 'provocation'is relative (for some cultures showing the elbow or the back of the neck is considered 'provocative') and rape has nothing to do with how the victim dressed.

More GoV:

If Anders Behring Breivik acted alone, or if he simply worked in company with one or more co-conspirators who shared his opinions and his psychopathology, this would be a boring essay, and could be ended right here.

So, just for the sake of argument, let’s assume not only that he had accomplices, but that he was in fact a “weaponized psychopath” who was discovered, cultivated, and trained by an as-yet unidentified organization for the express purpose of discrediting anti-jihad activists and politicians, and halting any effective resistance to the Islamization of Europe.

Such an operation seems highly unlikely, and Mr. Breivik is probably exactly what he seems to be. However, there are still loose ends to the case — tantalizing hints of outside complicity, and some intriguing coincidences.

DF's beliefs and worldview is not the issue. He can change any them or keep them intact, to me that's irrelevant. My main point was that the teeming self-haters in question are the ones making up the bulk of Perry's voting bloc. There is no end to their stupidity and gullibility.

I'm not entirely sure that I agree with you that they're self-hating. Hateful and hatefilled, yes.

I'm not entirely sure that I agree with you that they're self-hating. Hateful and hatefilled, yes.

A lot of it does stem from self-loathing of that so-called "sinful nature", and a need for punitive, authoritarian regimes at every level from the family to government, to keep their own desires in line, and punishable.

The goal is to overcome the sin nature by righteous living. Old idea; they've put their own prescriptions for "righteous living" on it, as do all who believe that way. That belief doesn't have to turn self-destructive or lethal. But the Response/NAR/Evangelical Protestant versions are particularly virulent.

Ex-reporter: Phone hacking 'widely discussed' at News of the World

News Corp. Execs Aware of Hacking Since 2007

News Corp. (NWSA)’s editors at the News of the World Sunday tabloid discussed the practice of phone hacking in daily meetings, a former reporter said, increasing the pressure on executives to explain why they were not aware of it.

The practice was “widely discussed in the daily editorial conference” until “explicit reference to it was banned by the editor,” former royal reporter Clive Goodman said in a March 2007 letter that was published by U.K. lawmakers today. News Corp. deputy Chief Operating Officer James Murdoch will probably be recalled to the U.K. Parliament to answer more questions about the allegations at the now-defunct tabloid.

Murdoch told lawmakers last month that he hadn’t realized until late 2010 that phone hacking was widespread at the News of the World. That’s been contradicted by Tom Crone and Colin Myler, two former executives of the tabloid, who said they informed him in 2008 about an e-mail that suggested more reporters had been involved. The Culture, Media and Sport Committee today examined fresh responses from former employees...

I think the down marketers are bypassing Walmart and going straight to the dollar stores. This demographic would generally have an unfavorable opinion of Walmart to start with and would seek other sources for bargains. I like the dollar stores for equivalent items. You can reach the various sections without a major foot expedition, the employees know where things are, and checkout is both faster and less complicated.

Zombie attack: Leicester city council overrun by ‘undead’

Just a week after Leicester's civic leaders admitted they were unprepared for a zombie invasion, a horde of the "undead" has shuffled through the city.

About 150 people in horror make-up took part in the "mass shamble", according to organiser James Dixon.

The mob "groaned and pressed themselves on the glass" at the council's offices.

It followed news last week that a "concerned citizen" had used a Freedom of Information request to ask how the authority would tackle a zombie attack.

Any schadenfreude directed at Murdoch is probably misplaced. Sure, his philosophy of lowest-common denominator journalism has seriously damaged public discourse and journalism in general, but the creation of the Conservative cult is not really his idea. I don't know him, naturally, but I doubt he has even a fraction of the hardcore wingnut beliefs and truthiness that FOX peddles. Rather, he saw an extremely vulnerable, gullible, and suggestible market segment, and appointed one of their own to sell to them. If the same constituency believed in global warming, UFO landings, or reincarnation, FOX would be pushing that.

If Roger Ailes were to be a fallguy, on the other hand, this nation might just be saved.

Prepare for War by Rebecca Brown

Do you know how Satan can use "doorways" including yoga, role-playing games, and meditation, to bring demonic destruction into your home? In this spiritual warfare manual, Rebecca Brown writes from seven years experience helping deliver many people out of hardcore satanism. In this sequel to her best-selling book He Came to Set the Captives Free, you will learn to stand victoriously against Satan, deal with the dangerous New Age teachings, recognize and deal with satanic ritualistic abuse of children, minister in the area of deliverance, and handle the rarely discussed problems people face after deliverance. Satan hates you and wants to destroy you. To be victorious you must Prepare for War.

More on Rebecca Brown - [Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

The funny part about these types is their antipathy towards so-called "new age". A lot of their beliefs stem from the exact same root.

Here's a rough direct line (sorry for the wiki links...this is a quick/dirty post):

New Thought Movement (19th century) --> Phineas P. Quimby (colleague of/influenced Mary Baker Eddy, founder of Christian Science) --> Latter Rain movement --> E.W. Kenyon

From there you get Oral Roberts, Pat Robertson, and now these new people like those people from The Response. Like any movement, there are other influences. But much of their theology does stem from 19th century mind-over-matter thought.

Nice to see that investigators are actually investigating and questioning claims that News Corp execs weren't in the look re: hacking scandal. Turns out that UK investigators found emails that show that they were in the loop and who should be the fall guy to claim he was a rogue in News of the World when the hacking practice was widespread:

Clive Goodman, the former royal reporter jailed for his role in phone hacking, wrote a letter in 2007 claiming that phone hacking was "widely discussed" at editorial meetings, and that former editor Andy Coulson offered to let him keep his job if he agreed to say in court that he was a rogue element within the paper.

The claims are deeply damaging to Coulson, who has always maintained that he did not know about the hacking going on at his paper. They are also politically perilous for Cameron, who took Coulson on even as evidence mounted against him. Moreover, they raise fresh danger for James and Rupert Murdoch, both of whom claimed to know nothing about hacking. Before the documents were released, the select committee for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport announced that it is "likely" to recall James Murdoch when Parliament resumes in September.

Why do I get the feeling that Perry is totally disinclined to listen to Rove?

When you lead off your campaign by calling the president unpatriotic and issuing veiled threats to the Fed chairman, you set a noise level that's kinda hard to dial back.

Karl Rove is very smart and knows how to run a presidential campaign. But Rove is George W's man and Rick Perry hates Bush the Younger.

Rebecca Brown, the author of Prepare for War, is quite a controversial figure and was officially diagnosed as mentally ill. Her medical license was revoked by the State of Indiana in 1984 on the grounds that she had

"knowingly and intentionally misdiagnosed her patients", blaming their illnesses on "demons, devils, and evil spirits." A board-appointed psychiatrist diagnosed her as suffering from "acute personality disorders including demonic delusions and/or paranoid schizophrenia" and observed her injecting herself with unknown substances. The board also found that she had over-medicated her patients and administered improper treatments, as well as failed to properly document their treatment.

Her husband and partner in Harvest Ministries, Daniel Yoder, is a convicted conman:

Brown's husband, Daniel Yoder, was arrested on July 29, 1991 in Phoenix, Arizona and extradited to Iowa. Yoder was charged with falsifying motor vehicle registrations and driver’s licenses, and falsifying social security records, allegedly using the social security number of a dead man. During the court proceedings the prosecution amended court documents to include the defendant’s true and correct name of William Joseph Stewart. After initially pleading not guilty, Yoder eventually agreed to a plea bargain in which he pled guilty and was fined $1,976.92, plus a surcharge of $593.08 and court costs.

It won't surprise many of you that they were once affiliated with the Jack Chick hate cult.

Ha, ain't that the truth.

I don't begrudge these whackodoodle conservative Christian-supremacists their crank beliefs...it's a free country; let 'em. They're just not "free" to impose their beliefs on everyone else. They feel if they haven't, they are personal failures. So, they're at odds with reality on that one.

There are literally thousands of them in Lubbock, a lot more in places like Dallas and Atlanta (especially the suburbs). Southern California also has a big contingent.

Moments in the application where you realize you're just not the person this school is looking for: How would you handle “controversial issues” (such as speaking in tongues, eternal security, positions on
the second coming of Christ, etc.) in the classroom?

OK, I've taught Catholic school for a few years. I can handle "Mrs. Zionist, do you go to hell if you kill yourself?"

I cannot handle speaking in tongues.

So San Ramon Christian Valley Academy will have to find a different English teacher.

And CNN is reporting that Walmart's 2nd Qtr numbers are down. Apparently their normal customer base is shopping at dollar stores more, and shopping a bit less overall.

Hey. Did a follow up. It's the other way around:

Wal-Mart Second-Quarter Profit Rises 5.7%

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT), the world’s largest retailer, boosted its profit forecast for the year after second-quarter earnings rose and the Sam’s Club wholesale chain helped the company halt a decline in sales at its U.S. stores.

Profit in the fiscal year ending in January will be $4.41 to $4.51 a share, up from a previous projection of $4.35 to $4.50, Bentonville, Arkansas-based Wal-Mart said today in a statement. The average estimate of 25 analysts in a Bloomberg survey was $4.47. Second-quarter net income climbed 5.7 percent.

Yeah, they broke with Chick, I don't remember about what, probably squabbling over Bible verses. But yeah, like I was saying earlier, few people outside of jihadi dupes can top the gullibility and stupidity of this crowd. They're very ripe for exploitation by demagogues and ripoff artists, and perry will play them just like a cheap cornet, like Dick Armey did.

Yeah, my parents, too. No "secular" music, tightly controlled television-watching, narrow reading lists limited to only that type of Christian publication, boycotting movies they'd never seen like Last Temptation of Christ, the works.

Oh yeah, and the grand delusion that they are personally powerful enough to control such things.
