Tom Waits-Cookie Monster: God’s Away on Business

I’d sell your heart to the junkman baby
For a buck, for a buck
If you’re looking for someone to pull you out of that ditch
You’re out of luck, you’re out of luck

Ship is sinking
The ship is sinking
The ship is sinking

There’s a leak, there’s a leak in the boiler room
The poor, the lame, the blind
Who are the ones that we kept in charge?
Killers, thieves and lawyers

God’s away, God’s away
God’s away on business, business
God’s away, God’s away
God’s away on business, business

Digging up the dead with a shovel and a pick
It’s a job, it’s a job
Bloody moon rising with a plague and a flood
Join the mob, join the mob
It’s all over, it’s all over
It’s all over

There’s a leak, there’s a leak in the boiler room
The poor, the lame, the blind
Who are the ones that we kept in charge?
Killers, thieves and lawyers

God’s away, God’s away
God’s away on business, business
God’s away, God’s away on business, business

Goddamn there’s always such a big temptation
To be good, to be good
There’s always free cheddar in a mousetrap, baby
It’s a deal, it’s a deal

God’s away, God’s away
God’s away on business, business
God’s away, God’s away
God’s away on business, business

I narrow my eyes like a coin slot baby
Let her ring, let her ring

God’s away, God’s away
God’s away on business, business
God’s away, God’s away
God’s away on business, business

Have you made your yearly offering of chocolate chip cookies and snickerdoodles to the Emperor of the Universe? That might just be your problem.

Other than Tom Traubert's Blues? While I can listen to a Waits song, I sure as hell don't enjoy it.

However, something tells me that Waits does not care whether I enjoy it or not.

Manned spaceflights no longer a priority, Russia says

[...]

Roskosmos chief Vladimir Popovkin said Russia was spending almost half of its space budget on manned flights and needed to shift focus to more technology-oriented projects. He added however it would stand by its station commitments.

"Unfortunately manned spaceflight accounts for an unjustifiably large part of the budget: It makes up 48 percent," he told reporters at Russia's flagship MAKS airshow near Moscow.

He added Roskomos would narrow its focus to satellite communication, navigation systems and meterological study.

When he 1st hit the scene "they" tried to push him as the next Sinatra

While not as widely as popular as Sinatra was, the comparison is apt in that Connicks style and cross over appeal (music and movies) matches Sinatra

John Bolton: Spend More On Weapons, Cut Veterans Health Care and Retirement

Cutting spending wouldn't mean cuts in care standards. There's likely waste that can be removed. But I wouldn't make the VA a significant savings target. The pension system, though, should be looked at with an eye towards changing to a 401(k).

Cuts to the VA and pension are just the tip of the iceberg. With draw downs in Iraq and Afghanistan, our mission right now should be towards finding out what works, what doesn't, and getting rid of the latter. And first on the list should be Cold War-era weapons that have been hampered or even useless in the time since.

The F-16 is becoming dated. The fighters China will have in service before the end of the decade will be superior to it. We can't let ourselves get outclassed, as that's a sure way to get into a war we won't win.

Replacing the F-16? We could start by ending the money pit that is the F-35, and then running a competition for a low-cost replacement. The Rafale, perhaps, or the F-16I that the Israelis are buying. Same with vehicle programs, considering the number of viable alternatives there are out there.

Einstein was wrong about that. Flavius Vegetius Renatus was right:

"If you want peace, prepare for war."

Strength is the cardinal matter in deterring enemies.

Which only spurs your enemies to build bigger and better armies, which means you either have to build an even bigger and/or better army or lose your superiority. Spurring them to build bigger/better, causing you to build bigger/better, etc, etc.

The Soviets found this out the hard way. Shall we join them in the dust bin of history?

The J-15, for starters. Those will be in service by 2014. The more advanced J-20 won't likely appear till late in the decade, so we've got some time but not much.

J-15 is a Su-33 knock-off, while the J-20 is a Su-27 with a new skin. I agree, they'll be a threat, but only because the Chinese will be able to knock off hundreds of them, while we're slowly going bankrupt trying to put a new generation of hanger queens into service.

Cutting spending wouldn't mean cuts in care standards. There's likely waste that can be removed. But I wouldn't make the VA a significant savings target. The pension system, though, should be looked at with an eye towards changing to a 401(k).

Sorry DF, but all three of those things are bad ideas. There is too much being wasted in procurement, the VA is mindbogglingly underfunded and has been for decades. As for 401(k) plans, well, they're a wonderful way to reward Wall Street. I just haven't figured out _why_ we should reward them.

No, we wouldn't. China has put an emphasis on pilot training that the Soviet Union never did. They'd have better pilots than any we've faced since WWII.

China has seemed to have learned the lessons about having properly trained people. In future conflicts, China will make no use of human waves; It'll be moderate numbers of skilled professionals.

The F-16 is becoming dated. The fighters China will have in service before the end of the decade will be superior to it. We can't let ourselves get outclassed, as that's a sure way to get into a war we won't win.

Do you really believe that anything the Chinese will be able to field in quantity will be significantly better than the F16? I don't. The J10? The FC1?

What the Air Force needs to do is what the Army did after the XMBT-70 disaster when they came up with the faster, cheaper & better M1 as a result.

somewhere along the way you have to consider that production costs drop significantly when you build them by the hundreds...for what that's worth...I'm hardly an expert but I'd dump the 35 and stick with absolute air superiority with the 22...turn around and build a brand new Warthog...easily the most lethal plane in the bunch...down and dirty...and see if it's possible to land them on a carrier...if not, build a carrier where they can

Authorities in Oklahoma are on the hunt for a man who didn't show up for a court appearance Monday for his rape trial, and who has ties to the Oathkeeper movement and believes his arrest was part of a government conspiracy.

Charles Dyer, a former U.S. Marine who served in Iraq, was arrested and charged in January of 2010 on two separate counts -- one charge of possessing an unregistered grenade launcher that was registered as stolen from a military base in California, and one charge of raping a minor. In April, a judge declared a mistrial after the jury couldn't reach a decision.

We'd be better off building these, as it's taking a proven airframe and incorporating stealth features into it. Same thing with the Super Hornet, which the Navy's using to replace its F-14s. The F-22's a hanger queen, has been since we put the first one into service.

And it's not a matter of the carrier, but of the plane. You'd have to rebuild the A-10 for carrier service, which might cost as much as building a whole new aircraft from scratch.

Former Marine With Ties To Right-Wing Movements Charged With Child Rape, Possessing Grenade Launcher

Charles Dyer, a former U.S. Marine who served in Iraq, was arrested January 12 in Oklahoma on the rape charge. A child had told sexual-abuse experts about a January 2nd incident at Dyer's home.

But while sheriff's deputies were at Dyer's home making the arrest, according to court documents, they found several firearms and what they believed to be a Colt M-203, 40-millimeter grenade launcher.

3.) Barbra Streisand: Famous for leaving $10 tip for $457 tab.
4.) LeBron James: Didn't ever get tipping talents, left $10 on an $800 bill.
5.) Jeremy Piven: Left signed Entourage DVD as tip.
6.) Usher: Once left his autograph as a tip.
7.) Mariah Carey: Famous for diva demands and no tips!
8.) Sean Penn: Left $0 on a $450 tab in New Orleans.

I have to post this, since it's too sick not to mention:

'It's entirely inappropriate': Fashion industry outraged after French label launches lingerie for girls as young as FOUR

In a move that has shocked fashion onlookers, scantily-clad young girls wearing make-up and sporting voluminous up-dos are promoting a new range of lingerie that is targetted at girls as young as four years old.

Combining lingerie and lounge wear to form 'loungerie,' the Jours Après Lunes line for four to 12-year-olds features a range of panties, bras, camisoles and T-shirts with lace edges, ribboned bow detailing and nautical stripes.

The shots feature young girls in poses and styling that seem far too premature for their ages.

Wearing striped bras and panties, they play with make-up and jewellery, strings of pearls wrapped around their small frames.

Most of the photos are too risque to feature on MailOnline, the bare legs and stomachs of the girls deeming them inappropriate for publication.

You don't need to be a SoCon to find this wrong.

I will *NEVER* understand people who stiff the servers, especially when 95% of the time it's the kitchen that fucked up. Besides, if your dining experience was really that bad, shouldn't you be talking to the manager instead of being a passive-aggressive jerk about it?

I've never worked as a waiter, as I don't have the type of character that is required to perform that task. I have worked in retail, however, and I know that working in a customer-is-always-right atmosphere can make a reasonably normal person into a boiling misanthrope after a while. You come into frequent contact with people who are malevolently stupid, disturbingly crazy, or just plain mean. I imagine it's every bit as bad if not worse with waiters, because waiters have the added perk of dealing with stupid/crazy/mean people who are also incredibly finicky diners.

My dumbshit ex-mother-in-law was a prime example. I used to dread having to go out to eat with them when they came to town (which they seemed to do about every 18 hours). Without fail, she would hassle the shit out of the waiter from the moment we were seated until the moment she left. She didn't do it in a belligerent manner, just endlessly.

Waiter, waiter! These portabellas are different from the ones I used to have back when I lived in Netherpoostink PA thirty-seven years ago, why are these different? Are you sure they're portabellas? And this steak, it sure seems awfully meaty, not like the steaks we have in Nebraska. Why are steaks in Texas not the same as steaks in Nebraska? The water seems more watery here. Can you maybe do something about that? Boy, you don't make the iced tea properly here, do you, not like at home.

FOR THREE HOURS. I always did my best to try to communicate my despair to the server with my eyes, the way a hostage might do. "I am as much a prisoner here as you. I do not share the opinions or disposition of this crazy person, but I am powerless to do anything about it, for I have ruined my life and ended up married to her shrew of a daughter. I hope that you will not spit any loogies into my soup (or worse), but I am sure the Gods would look kindly upon you if you were to do me the kindness of replacing my coffee with a frothing hot mug of hemlock."

re: #230 Dark_Falcon

I don't get it.

Hustler magazine used to publish a full page comic inside the back cover that was called "Chester the Molester," It was about a large beer belly carrying and drooling guy interacting with very young girls in very inappropriate ways. Chester was basically the same meme as "Pedo Bear" only more than 20 years earlier. People still use the term "Chester" to describe a pedophile so it has become part of the language in some areas of the country.

Nice thing about TCM: they leave the cast credits on the screen long enough so you can read them.

I hate the modern trend of blasting through the credits in 5 seconds and shrinking them into a small corner of the screen.

I lost air for 2 days last month..I run my A/C pretty cool for the dog when I work.. I don't care..He lives in comfort..
I paid my Electric bill yesterday..It was only 135 bucks...Energy in Oklahoma is pretty cheap

That was the biggest shocker of moving out of your parent's house in Florida. Your first electric bill. I think mine, years ago was 300. Actually had to ask the parents for help in paying.

I know I'm behind in this thread, but hope not too far.

The reason they call them blind dates is because you'll wish you were.

You probably missed the story.. I met this woman at the Lodge and got along great with her.. We talked for hours and she has a really thick accent like German or something.. Friday night she came up to me while I was with my buddies and asked me if I would ask he daughter out..
I was stunned..People were laughing..
I said yes..I would be more than happy to take your daughter out to dinner..
People tell me she is a cute blonde..But who knows? I know one thing..She has a great mom that I really enjoyed talking with...
Funny story.. When I told my cleaning lady this story I asked her what fancy restaurant I could take her too..She went blank..She called her Sister..No help..I was so laughing at her..Her best answer was Olive Garden..I love her..But there you go...hahaha

re: #245 compound idaho

I always leave 20%/25%, usually more. If the service was bad, I figure the gal/guy was having a bad day and likely could use the $. What does it matter anyway. Don't forget to tip the motel maid. That job must suck.

If I go to a restaurant and sit down to eat, I default to 20% (because it's easier to quickly figure in my head) and round to the nearest half-dollar or so.

re: #238 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

Honestly, that doesn't bother me.

My Uncle (mom's sister's husband) was in line to be promoted to General. He had been a Commandant of an AFB.

Mom's sister said, "Uh... no."

Something this big needs the agreement of the couple.

You need to carry fifty extra dollars with you and slip it to the waiter BEFORE the meal.

They'll love it.
