Jon Huntsman: Maybe Not Anti-Science, But Definitely Anti-Women’s Rights

Huntsman embraces science but opposes women’s rights
Politics • Views: 28,624

In an interview for ABC News, Jon Huntsman called out his Republican opponents for rejecting the science of evolution and climate change.

Tapper asked, “Were you just being cheeky or do you think there’s a serious problem with what Governor Perry said?” Huntsman’s response: “I think there’s a serious problem. The minute that the Republican Party becomes the party - the anti-science party, we have a huge problem. We lose a whole lot of people who would otherwise allow us to win the election in 2012.”

That minute came and went about 20 years ago, by the way.

Huntsman went on to describe what he sees as the long term political downside to questioning science:

When we take a position that isn’t willing to embrace evolution, when we take a position that basically runs counter to what 98 of 100 climate scientists have said, what the National Academy of Science - Sciences has said about what is causing climate change and man’s contribution to it, I think we find ourselves on the wrong side of science, and, therefore, in a losing position….I can’t remember a time in our history where we actually were willing to shun science and become a - a party that - that was antithetical to science. I’m not sure that’s good for our future and it’s not a winning formula.

I don’t think Huntsman is right; this definitely is a winning formula, with a base of Republican voters who overwhelmingly reject any scientific facts that contradict the literal word of the Bible.

But at the same time, Huntsman is making sure no one will mistake him for a liberal, by advocating for the religious right’s most extreme anti-abortion position — a federal constitutional amendment to strip away women’s right to choose when to bear a child: Huntsman sheds moderate label on abortion.

“Governor Huntsman supports a federal amendment that would ensure legal protections for the unborn,” said Huntsman spokesman Tim Miller. “He’s proud of his record in Utah and will continue to advocate for life on a national level.”

Karrie Galloway, executive director of Planned Parenthood of Utah, said Huntsman’s support for a constitutional amendment appears to be a shift to the right for him.

“He seems to be bending toward a very conservative agenda,” Galloway said. “That certainly makes him much more strident than he was as governor of Utah. He didn’t make that any part of his platform [then]. I’m disappointed that he is bowing to the extreme conservative politics.”

That makes how many constitutional amendments that the Right wants to add to the Constitution?

What is this with the use of the word 'cheeky'? O'Donnell said it too, a few days ago.

Americans do not say this 'cheeky'. This is incorrect.

//Only a little.

The anti-abortion position is an anti-science position, in my opinion.

If you look at the science of reproduction, you notice that fertilized eggs, blastospheres, embryos, and even fetuses meet a natural demise by the millions every year. The fact that science has allowed women to decide to add one more to total is an unacceptable reality to people who believe each of those beings has a soul from the moment egg meets sperm, and that only God gets to decide which ones implant and mature and which end up being expelled.

I respect people who believe the fertilized egg has a soul, but I do not allow that view to determine what I see as reality.

re: #2 publicityStunted

They have to destroy the village constitution in order to save it.

No shit. Let's see...

- They wish to abolish the 14th, 17th, and 19th amendments, which is an amendment apiece.

- They want a "balanced budget amendment" that will cap taxes and spending to 18% of GDP, as well as require 2/3 majority votes on any tax increases whatsoever.

- They want an "anti-abortion" amendment that would declare life as beginning at conception.

- Perry wants an amendment that would impose term limits on Supreme Court justices, as well as allowing Congress to overturn SCOTUS decisions via 2/3rd majority votes.

- They want an amendment to define marriage as being strictly between a man and a woman.

And these are just off the top of my head.

They might, for example, choose to start the meal with a $15 chunk of pizza cheese – I’m sorry, “Fresh Mozzarella” with “Fresh Basil, vine ripened tomatoes, aged balsamic reduction, and chive dill.”

I hope they get out soon, but there is a lesson in here somewhere and I will leave it to each individual to decide what that lesson is.

I am curious though. How does them being "Palestinian solidarity activists" make them "Palestinian terror sympathizers?" That's quiet a leap to go from solidarity activists to terrorist sympathizers.

I have little doubt that they will serve nowhere near the full sentence. They will be released on "humanitarian" grounds and be given the opportunity to spread their pro terrorism views by every media outlet in the world. And yes, they will thank iran for its compassion in releasing them before the end of their sentences.

Anyone want to bet me on this one?

Nope.

Right. So I take it that protesting against the Iraq War and Afghanistan Wars made people "terrorist sympathizers" as well. So these two guys happen by and are friends with some Palestinians that are protesting the wall and tear gas canisters suddenly makes them "terrorist sympathizers." So anyone that also protests against the wall, even Israelis, are terrorist sympathizers. Anyone, make that everyone, that doesn't agree with every single policy put forth by the Likud party in Israel is a terrorist sympathizer. Why even feeling empathy for Palestinians would be considered sympathy for terror. You just can't win.

That was certainly the mentality post 9/11. Still is in many circles. At the time for me it was more like, I knew people with relatives and friends in every country starting with Israel and hitting every country going due east until Bangladesh.

How easy, to call for war in somebody else's country when we'll never have to see any of it ourselves.

Scroll down to listen to a cut on the new Cooder album.

A corrido is a traditional Mexican storytelling song. Corridos were used to tell stories back in the Mexican Revolution, but are still very popular today. Here, Ry Cooder uses the form as a vehicle to address the situation with the U.S. banking industry and the government bailout. The song is a story about how Jesse James would go after bank executives if he were alive today, and it uses this really exciting brass band sound that's very popular in L.A. — you'll hear it if you roll down your window while driving.

Hi everyone, a little update:

I've been in Israel on vacation and visiting friends. I was in Beer Sheva yesterday and today. The missile siren sounded this morning so we all went to the bomb shelter around the house with all the neighbors. Then we went gliding all day and enjoyed ourselves after Hamas's morning rocket attack.

We then packed up this evening to go back to Haifa and while we were on the road, another siren sounded. Everyone stopped their cars and we took cover. We saw the anti-missile battery trails and the explosions were very near us.

Twenty minutes later, another attack hit the neighbor's house next to our friend's house where we were staying the last two days, killing him, hitting the street right where we had the car parked 20 minutes before, and blowing out all the car windows apparently. Our friends helped with the wounded outside of their front door.

I posted about it in the morning here:

[Link: plus.google.com...]

And then right as we got home in Haifa here:

[Link: plus.google.com...]

The missile literally missed us by a few minutes.

Anyway, I'm ok, my friend is ok apart from his car blown out, his family is ok, etc...it's just a bit shocking and stuff. I've been through it before but I never had a near miss like this before.

Just thought I'd post. I'm gonna relax a bit now. =)

Pizza cheese. The derangement is complete.

I think the last time I heard that expression was in a Kristin Lattany book, where the protagonist's son thinks his mom is acting weird, blames it on her lactose intolerance, and demands to know if she's 'been binging on pizza cheese again'.

He gets compared to Bush because the people whining and bitching now about everything he does are whining and bitching because of who and what he is, not because they care about the pizza cheese.

When you look at them having conniptions over Michelle Obama's expensive SHOES, apparently never having realized that every first lady for decades back also wore designer shoes, you realize how hypocritical they are, and how fake their concerns are.

My theory on this is that if they're male the media in general pays less attention to the detained. Regardless of country. Good looking young women that are detained are given endless coverage be the media and attention by the authorities. The race of the detained also play a contributing role. Generally women are released much sooner as even this case has shown since the female detainee was released by Iran. But if you're an older and not so good looking dude? Forget about it.
