Rick Perry Holds the Record for Executions (By Far)

Christian fundamentalist holds kill record
Politics • Views: 27,485

Rick Perry may not have accomplished much in college, but as governor of Texas he can lay claim to one stunning achievement: he’s far and away the United States record holder for executions.

In his nearly 11 years as chief executive, Perry, now running for the GOP presidential nomination, has overseen more executions than any governor in modern history: 234 and counting. That’s more than the combined total in next two states — Oklahoma and Virginia — since the death penalty was restored 35 years ago.

The number is partly explained by sheer longevity at the helm of a huge state that has mastered the complicated legal maze of carrying out capital punishment.

But Perry has hardly shrunk from the task. …

He vetoed a bill that would have spared the mentally retarded and sharply criticized a Supreme Court ruling that juveniles were not eligible for death. He has found during his tenure only one inmate on Texas’s crowded death row he thought should receive the lesser sentence of life in prison.

And Perry’s role in the 2004 execution of Cameron Todd Willingham — who supporters said should have been at least temporarily spared when experts warned that faulty forensic science led to his conviction — is still the subject of investigation in Texas.

Me, too. That was odd. It went on for about 20-30 seconds. We never have them like that here.

How could he have been innocent if he had been arrested and thrown in jail?

God must really be pissed about all the garbage coming out of DC if there are earthquakes in the area.

There's an earthquake zone in Virginia, but this was a good deal larger than "usual" there.

I had no idea... Just moved to DC a year ago and this was the first quake I've felt, but I've lived on the east coast my whole life. My first instinct was that something else happened. Sad, but true. I'm just not used to the feeling of the entire NIH shaking in front of me. Now I have to re-calibrate my laser. UGH.

As far as I know, this is the strongest one ever to hit this region.

More socon sociopath disconnect. For people whose deity/man/deity-man/whatever was killed by the government, they are oddly in love with the idea, themselves.

32 Hal_10000  Tue, Aug 23, 2011 11:29:46am

Let's focus on the important part. That Perry led the nation in executions is not really interesting. Texas always does and governor has very limited authority over executions. He can not stop an executions on his own.

FAR more relevant is his attempt to cover up the Willingham case and his fighting Hank Skinner's efforts to get DNA testing. THAT is a scandal and a half.

On the other hand, Texas is one of the few states cutting down on imprisonment and goig for better options on non-violent criminals. They even closed a prison recently.

33 Iwouldprefernotto  Tue, Aug 23, 2011 11:34:44am

One question:

Who would Jesus execute?

34 Rocky-in-Connecticut  Tue, Aug 23, 2011 11:59:52am

I amazed how competing theocrats like Perry, the Ayatollah, and the King of Saudi Arabia can be so similar.

These 3 lovely puritanical gentlemen all enjoy implementing their own religious-inspired justice and are notable for their glee in which they use the Death Penalty.
