Yeah… we felt it all the way up here in NYC metro area. Lots of folks around here spooked, some thought there was a construction accident at Ground Zero but it was a quake down in VA, between Charlottesville and Richmond.

I just felt some of it here at work in DC about five min ago.

Of course luckily because we’re in DC and it’s centered in Virginia it just meant the entire building shook for about 5 to 10 seconds… but those were some freaky 5 to 10 seconds!

Holy crap.

I once experienced an earthquake in Safed, Israel. It felt and sounded like a heavy truck was driving along the street behind my daughter’s house. Except, there is no street behind her house, just a steep hill. :/

If the 5.8 holds I will not be too shocked to hear that there is significant damage at the epicenter. I imagine building rules are not too high there since earthquake activity in the area is not common.

Virginia - Earthquake History

On February 21, 1774, a strong earthquake was felt over much of Virginia and southward into North Carolina. Many houses were moved considerably off their foundations at Petersburg and Blandford (intensity MM VII). The shock was described as “severe” at Richmond and “small” at Fredericksburg. However, it “terrified the inhabitants greatly.” The total felt area covered about 150,000 square kilometers.

The three great earthquakes near New Madrid, Missouri, in 1811 - 1812 (December 11, January 23, and February 7) were felt strongly in Virginia. Reports from Norfolk and Richmond newspapers describe the effects in detail.

An earthquake, apparently centered in southwestern Virginia, on March 9, 1828, was reported felt over an area of about 565,000 square kilometers, from Pennsylvania to South Carolina and the Atlantic Coastal Plain to Ohio. Very few accounts of the shock were available from places in Virginia; it was reported that doors and windows rattled (MM V). President John Quincy Adams felt this tremor in Washington D.C., and provided a graphic account in his diary. He compared the sensation to the heaving of a ship at sea.

The August 27, 1833, earthquake covered a broad felt area from Norfolk to Lexington and from Baltimore, Maryland, to Raleigh, North Carolina - about 135,000 square kilometers. Two miners were killed in the panic the shock caused at Brown’s Coal Pits, near Dover Mills, about 30 kilometers from Richmond. At Charlottesville, Fredericksburg, Lynchburg, and Norfold, windows rattled violently, loose objects shook, and walls of buildings were visibly agitated (MM V).

Continues.

I experienced quite a few quakes during my 17 years in Anchorage, Ak. it is definitely scary when anything over a 4.5 or so hits and everything moves.

We felt it here in VA Beach. The house shook for about 5-10 seconds and that was it. Scared me for a moment that perhaps we’d been hit by a strong gust of wind, but it’s a perfectly beautiful day outside.

And now, for some reason, my cellphone’s not wantin’ to work. I’m getting bars, but every time I try to make a call, I get a “Call Failed” message. Think some cell towers might have gone outta commission for a bit.

I know a little about the New Madrid quakes because they were foretold by the Shawnee Prophet, and played into Tecumseh’s uprising.

So I did know that you could have quakes there, I just figured it took a prophet to bring one one.

In future, you shouldn’t get out. unless you’re in like, a pure-glass building or something called Mr. Rickety’s Hanging Knife Emporium.

Outside, there’s more danger from falling glass, powerlines, etc. The best place to be is near an interior load-bearing wall away from any glass, or under a very strong piece of furniture.

So, Drudge has to headline that Obama was out on the golf course when it happened - as though the President is going to know when an earthquake will happen. No one can predict a quake, despite scientists’ best efforts to date.

What an asshole (Drudge, that is).

Whole house shook for 15 or so seconds.
Some stuff fell of the shelves.

Here it was only about 5 seconds. The building swayed like it was a strong wind, but when my desk also swayed with it I realized it was coming from the ground and couldn’t be the wind. Nothing fell down though—it wasn’t that strong here.

Nah. You’d be fine. I was here in the valley for Sylmar in ‘71, in South San Francisco in ‘89 and of course within a couple miles of the epicenter for Northridge. Unless stuff is falling around you or the walls are cracking it’s just a weird ride.

If you have ever experienced mild or moderate mid air turbulence, that’s pretty close to the sensation. Northridge got scary as the glass fell out of my cabinets, and furniture fell over. Then seeing daylight in the corners of the closet…

1010wins is reporting that Newark Liberty airport has temporarily closed to check for runway damage.

All NJ TRANSIT rail, bus and light rail services are operating. Customers may experience some delays because of crowding conditions and speed restrictions due to this afternoon’s earthquake. Systemwide cross-honoring is in effect. Check back for updates.

From local traffic reports:
NYC BULLETIN - 6-10 m delay - HUDSON RIVER CROSSINGS: INBOUND HOLLAND TUNNEL REOPENED // OUTBOUND REOPENED.
2:46 PM
NYC BULLETIN - 1-5 m delay - JOHN F KENNEDY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT CLOSED ON ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES DUE TO EATHQUAKE.
2:46 PM
NYC BULLETIN - 1-5 m delay - NEWARK LIBERTY AIRPORT CLOSED ON ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES DUE TO EARTHQUAKE.

From FoxNews:

The National Park Service said that all National Mall monuments and memorials are closed and evacuated after the quake.

At Reagan National Airport outside Washington, ceiling tiles fell during a few seconds of shaking. Authorities announced it was an earthquake and all flights were put on hold.

At the Pentagon in northern Virginia, a low rumbling built and built to the point that the building was shaking. People ran into the corridors of the government’s biggest building and as the shaking continued there were shouts of “Evacuate! Evacuate!”

In New York, the 26-story federal courthouse in lower Manhattan began swaying and hundreds of people were seen leaving the building. Court officers weren’t letting people back in.

Nuclear plant shut after quake, others unaffected

HOUSTON (Reuters) - A magnitude 5.9 earthquake on the East Coast on Tuesday forced the shutdown of two nuclear reactors at a Virginia power plant, but other nuclear power plants on the Eastern Seaboard were unaffected and operating normally.

A nuclear power plant operated by Dominion Resources’ was shut after the earthquake, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Two reactors at the North Anna Station in Mineral, Virginia were stopped, the NRC said. The plant lost off-site power, but diesel generators are operating, the spokesman said.

The plant lost off-site power .. That does not sound good.

The plant lost off-site power .. That does not sound good.

It just means they lost their electrical connection to the outside that powers their buildings and equipment when the plant is not running. Hence, it’s why their diesel generators kicked in.

160 John Vreeland  Tue, Aug 23, 2011 7:29:41pm

It was pretty weird here in DC. There is nothing on record for the area being near this strong of a temblor, so “nuclear explosion” was a serious possibility in my mind, except that I was playing a video game with some people in NY at the time, so there was no electromagnetic pulse to fry my electronics. I still checked for a fireball though, as I figured after the tremor I might have a few seconds to run into the basement before the shock wave blew all the windows in. “Okay,” I said. “Just a freak earthquake.”

There was no looting, either, which was a surprise since lately people don’t seem to need much of a reason.
