Joseph Farah: Virginia Earthquake a Sign from the Big Guy

Signs and portents
Wingnuts • Views: 36,144

After the Virginia earthquake, you knew it was just a matter of time before one of the religious right’s odd fear-mongering fanatics started ranting defensively about signs from the heavens; World Net Daily publisher and relentless Birther Joseph Farah is one of the first out of the gate. For some reason known only to Farah, his title alludes to Judy Garland in the Wizard of Oz: Earthquakes and hurricanes, oh my.

Many Americans are scratching their heads today wondering what in the world is going on with a rare earthquake hitting the East Coast to be followed by a hurricane a few days later.

It reminds us that our world can change very quickly.

Things don’t always stay the same.

Occasionally God really does shake things up as a sign to us of the consequences of disobedience and indifference to our Creator.

Yes, I really believe that.

I welcome the ridicule that will inevitably come from a statement like that.

UPDATE at 8/24/11 2:46:48 pm

Meanwhile, frequent Glenn Beck guest Joel Rosenberg is pretty sure this means we’re in the last days of man on Earth: RARE EARTHQUAKES SHAKE AMERICAN EAST COAST, ROCKY MTN STATES « Joel C. Rosenberg’s Blog.

Kinda shocked that none of the nutters has tried to assert that this earthquake was, in fact, a sign of the "End Times."

3 Kragar  Wed, Aug 24, 2011 2:43:29pm

What if the message was:

"HEY TEABAGGERS! KNOCK THAT SHIT OFF!"

If God's punishment is a 5.8 magnitude earthquake that causes no significant damage or injuries, then God must not be too unhappy.

I'll believe in signs like this when Farah or some other blaspheming quack is struck down by lightning from a clear sky.

Back when my wife ran off with my brother, one of her church-lady friends smugly explained to me "Sometimes God has to do something drastic to wake us up."
I'm not kidding, the baggage actually suggested that God had induced this adulterous liaison to warn me away from my secularist ways. I soon noticed that most of the fundies I knew were somehow inclined to make excuses for the disgraced couple, while all the heathens, atheists, and general infidels I knew roundly condemned them. It was one of the things that drove me away from Christianity for 30 years.

It's such a primitive mindset, IMO. If your only concept of God has him sending earthquakes, hurricanes, or some other disaster to tell you he's not happy, then that's not much of a God. At least to me. I wouldn't bother with a deity that petty.

31 Holidays are Family Fun Time  Wed, Aug 24, 2011 2:52:45pm

Yeah, can't say as I've had an event that ass-kickingly bad in my life, but I have seen many bad events that left me wondering "How could a God that supposedly loves and cares for us orchestrate something like this?" I don't begrudge folks their faith, but the "mysterious ways" BS got old by the time I was in high school.

The nationalist "theocratic" chauvinism is so typical. A small earthquake in "real Virginia" is a "sign from God" yet a massive tsunami that kills hundreds of thousands of people in the South Pacific is not a "sign from God."

"Back when my wife ran off with my brother....."

..is a very rough start to a story. The only way it can get worse is if it starts "Back when my wife ran off with my adopted son...", which is what happened to my father (his first spouse). BTW, He was a minister at the time. He didn't take it as a sign from god.

Exactly. I must be a weird atheist. Cause I figure it you're a "child of God" then everyone is the "children of God" or a "creator" regardless of religion, race, etc. Most importantly religion. So in essence. Even to a Christian a Muslim is still a "child of God." That's the way I see it -- in theory.

Damn, bro. I got nothing. I hope you have righted the ship, as it were.

More or less. Judas and Jezebel, as I (and many others) call them, are still married. They are serious wheels in the small world of New England fundamentalist politics.
My daughter from that marriage, now 34, turned out pretty well but she struggled with emotional problems for years. She stayed in denial for many years then joined her mother in somehow blaming me for the situation. She also hid it from her future husband until I showed up in person a few days before their wedding.
What brought me back to the Christian faith was the realization that ridiculous fundies are not the whole Christian community, or anywhere close to it. They have made alarming gains in recent years though. It is hard to be a faithful Christian, fundy quacks promise to make it not only easy but fun and profitable. Human nature being what it is, they find a receptive audience.

'this is, Obama has just exceeded his constitutional authority and acted in a dictatorial manner which we believe removes all legitimacy for his presidency and that we're gonna be calling on the Republican to remove this man from office as soon as possible.'

And I didn't say just impeachment. I said remove him from office because some people are also leaning to the words 'treason' and talking about the military coming in or somebody just coming in taking this guy into some form of arrest if we're doing this. I mean what do you do here? What does a nation do when this happens? We may have to try to have to gather in the streets and demand that Obama step down. But you know when you talk about doing that, you're gonna gather in the streets of Washington D.C. which where Obama has a support rate of 88% of the blacks and Hispanics who live there.

No. That's not what I mean.

An unfaithful spouse would be a curse to live with. If she did something like that, I'd be glad she was gone.

Hypothetical fail, there.

That's actually pretty well how I feel about Jezebel herself, no great loss. The loss of my brother and the partial loss of my daughter is something else again.
My second wife naturally despised wife #1. She was the one who started calling her "Jabba the Slutt." Her weight had doubled to about 280 pounds by the time they met, just 5 years after she had left me.

Group that called for violent action against Obama now talks about Military Coup

That seems to be a favor fantasy of the cafe conservative crowd, the military coup that removes Obama from power "because their oath demands it!" Personally, don't know which is funnier: That they believe there are enough soldiers willing to commit treason just to enact such a fantasy or that any sort of military coup of such size would so willingly turn over power to people like them.

re: #71 Shiplord Kirel

Evangelicals and adultery and divorce. Jesus was pretty clear about adultery and divorce, wasn't he? Unlike, for instance, homosexuality. How very strange.

I love the Jabba the Slutt thing though.

Gee, perhaps these religious fanatics need to perform a few Mayan-style human sacrifices to appease God, since this ancient culture also regarded all violent acts of nature as "the wrath of a deity".

I prefer a good old fashion Wicker Man.

re: #4 Atlas Fails

If God's punishment is a 5.8 magnitude earthquake that causes no significant damage or injuries, then God must not be too unhappy.

I'm sure Farah would tell you that this is just a gentle warning swat, and worse is to come if we don't repent.

re: #42 Gus 802

The nationalist "theocratic" chauvinism is so typical. A small earthquake in "real Virginia" is a "sign from God" yet a massive tsunami that kills hundreds of thousands of people in the South Pacific is not a "sign from God."

Tsunamis are also signs from God. Just about everything is a sign from God, but the sign always means 'do what the wingnuts say'.

Earthquakes are a sign from God that His laws are still in force, just like always, and whether or not the workings of those laws work to the convenience of the people in their path.

Heed the laws, is the message.

Or, there's no message, just a fact that the laws do work, like it or not. Take your pick. There isn't any third choice. Sorry, Farah.

Tectonic Plates is just a theory. You can't explain that.

This just in: "VIRGINIA QUAKE~~BREAKING NEWS!!!
The USGS has determined that the epicenter of the Va earthquake was in a graveyard just outside of DC. The cause appears to be all of you're Founding Fathers rolling over in their graves."

The earthquake on the east coast was from Chris Christie jumping into the race.

And this explains the drought and terrible heat in Texas? God hates us?

I welcome the ridicule that will inevitably come from a statement like that.

We've seen similar here at LGF.

Example:

Derp Derp Derpy Derpy Derp Derple Derp.

I welcome the inevitable downdings that will result from this opinion.

re: #19 imp_62

Why doesn't anyone point out the obvious: These natural disasters are a sign from God that he is pissed off at the GOP and the Tea party for destroying nature, ignoring science, and hating gays?

Thank you! I've been trying to point out that He struck an area that pointedly has NOT voted for full civil rights for all its citizens!!
