NPR Fresh Air: The New Apostolic Reformation

Seven Mountains Dominionism, brought to you by the Republican Party
Religion • Views: 31,881

From NPR’s Fresh Air, here’s an excellent in-depth investigation into the ideology of the New Apostolic Reformation, the movement of extreme right wing Protestant Christians that is deeply involved in the Republican Party and this presidential campaign: The New Apostolic Reformation: The Evangelicals Engaged In Spiritual Warfare.

MP3 Audio

On Wednesday’s Fresh Air, Rachel Tabachnick, who researches the political impact of the religious right, joins Terry Gross for a discussion about the growing movement and its influence and connections in the political world.

Tabachnick says the movement currently works with a variety of politicians and has a presence in all 50 states. It also has very strong opinions about the direction it wants the country to take. For the past several years, she says, the NAR has run a campaign to reclaim what it calls the “seven mountains of culture” from demonic influence. The “mountains” are arts and entertainment; business; family; government; media; religion; and education.

“They teach quite literally that these ‘mountains’ have fallen under the control of demonic influences in society,” says Tabachnick. “And therefore, they must reclaim them for God in order to bring about the kingdom of God on Earth. … The apostles teach what’s called ‘strategic level spiritual warfare’ [because they believe that the] reason why there is sin and corruption and poverty on the Earth is because the Earth is controlled by a hierarchy of demons under the authority of Satan. So they teach not just evangelizing souls one by one, as we’re accustomed to hearing about. They teach that they will go into a geographic region or a people group and conduct spiritual-warfare activities in order to remove the demons from the entire population. This is what they’re doing that’s quite fundamentally different than other evangelical groups.”

I heard this. Recommended.

I still have trouble believing that a movement that thinks demonic possession explains a failure to convert to Christianity could possibly catch on, but it’s a mad world, as we know.

i agree - the demons of greed, selfishness, fear, and prejudice have infected our public discourse

the ones that the old apostles warned us against

that’s a possibility I might consider, sympathy for the devil and all that

She did a very good job of factually describing the NAR without screaming about they are fascist psychopaths who are going to drown the world in blood. In fact I wish she had done a little bit more screaming, some NPR listeners are very charitable and may understand just how scary these folks are.

how do they plan to reform me?….sock me with a bible?

6 Kragar  Thu, Aug 25, 2011 3:37:36pm

They’ve actually written a book so they can properly identify these new Apostles

An apostle is a Christian leader, gifted, taught, commissioned, and sent by God with the authority to establish the foundational government of the church within an assigned sphere of ministry by hearing what the Spirit is saying to the churches and by setting things in order accordingly for the growth and maturity of the church and for the extension of the kingdom of God.

God’s decision to make an individual an apostle must be recognized and affirmed by real people. If someone says, ‘God has called me to be an apostle,’ but no one else agrees, then I have to doubt whether that person has accurately heard from God.

They also list criteria to ID an apostle.

Apostles, meh. I think they’re ready for a new messiah. Glenn Beck is applying for the job but it doesn’t seem to be catching on. Maybe even a whole new religion since Christianity has been tainted with communism and social justice.

Once identified, you might not necessarily keep your status. After the Lakeland Revival leader ran off with his secretary the blogs that supported him had quite a soul-searching exercise. ‘Apostle’ can be the short path to ‘demonic’.

From this morning’s email:

Perry’s Heavenly Host: James Leininger
A right-wing Texas billionaire is hosting a Christian “call to action” retreat for the Perry campaign this weekend. Governor Perry is expected to address the private gathering of Christian social conservatives at the Texas Hill Country Ranch of Dr. James Leininger.
…..
Over the past two decades, certain political issues have prompted Leininger to dig into a personal fortune worth hundreds of millions of dollars. These issues are his vehement opposition to tort laws, abortion and gay marriage and his devout belief in school vouchers and the teaching of such conservative Christian ideas as creationism in private and public schools. Leininger’s deep-pocket fervor makes him a divisive force even within the GOP. He has spent millions of dollars attacking moderate Republican lawmakers.
Perry might never have been governor—nor now be a presidential candidate—but for James Leininger. In a game-changing 1998 race then-Texas Agriculture Commissioner Perry was elected Lieutenant Governor. That victory secured Perry’s automatic promotion to governor two years later when President-Elect Bush abandoned the Governor’s Mansion. Perry narrowly won his fateful 1998 race against Democrat John Sharp, capturing just 50.04 percent of the vote. This squeaker victory was secured by an eleventh-hour media blitz that Perry paid for with a last-minute, $1.1 million loan. Leininger and two other Texas tycoons guaranteed the loan,1 which supplied more than 10 percent of the $10.3 million that Perry raised for that election. Leininger’s family and company PAC contributed $62,500 to that Perry campaign. Leininger also was the No. 1 contributor at the time to the Texas Republican Party (then chaired by former Leininger employee Susan Weddinton), which sank $82,760 into that Perry campaign. “I congratulate Leininger,” Perry opponent John Sharp said at the time. “He wanted to buy the reins of state government. And by God, he got them.”

Which means if they don’t agree with the message, you aren’t an apostle.

Good question. I think it may be somewhat unattractive to the type of voters you’re talking about. But they may go ahead and vote for these extremists anyway, thinking that Obama had his chance to fix the economy and failed. Fact is, this economy’s probably not fixable by a president or anyone else. It’s the worst we’ve had in 80 years, and govt policy can only do so much, especially in this angry, anti-govt. political atmosphere.

Arrrgh. One of my Tweeps is reporting an attack on a casino in Monterrey, Mexico. Somebody poured gasoline and then threw a grenade. Eleven are dead, the fire is out of control, and people are trapped inside. All the reports are in Spanish so far, and there are no official statements.

Then my Tweep signs off!

OK, here it is in English.

MONTERREY, Mexico (Reuters) - Armed men threw a grenade into a casino in northern Mexico, killing at least two people and setting fire to the building, local media and a Reuters witness reported on Thursday.

A dozen people are presumed to be trapped inside the Casino Royale building as smoke poured out into the street.

“There is a plume of dark, thick smoke towering from the building,” a Reuters witness at the scene said. The army, Red Cross and firemen were at the scene while nurses started to line up stretchers.

Local media said there were at least two people killed in the attack, but some are putting the toll as high as 10.

Monterrey, a manufacturing city of 4 million people 140 miles from the Texan border, has become increasingly violent in the last year as the government’s war against drug cartels has enveloped the city, although it was not clear whether organized crime was involved in the grenade attack.

This is the second incident involving grenades in Mexico this month. Two weeks ago, another group of armed men hurled a grenade into a popular area of the Gulf port city of Veracruz, killing one person.

I’m guessing the Apostle’s won’t like this one bit:

Gay Couples Spread in U.S., Behave Like Straight Couples

The new Census Bureau data, finalized this week, shows the numbers of gay couples in America has jumped by half in the past decade to 901,997.

Sixty percent are female, and 22 percent are raising children, according to the report.

In other words, the 2010 Census shows an all-time high of people self-identifying as members of cohabitating same-sex couples.

According to the research, many same-sex couples are doing something straight couples have been doing for generations: getting older, having kids, and moving to the suburbs.

These trends, both the spread of gay people living openly, and of gay populations mirroring trends in the straight population, are playing out nationwide.

Speaking of riding it out, we’re debating that right now. The sustained wind is looking to be in the same region of Isabel, which we rode out back in ‘03. Our biggest worry is our roof, but if the wind doesn’t get much higher than 70mph, then we’re just going to hunker down and hope for the best. We’ll lose a lot of shingles, but so long as the roof’s still there, we can survive.

But I expect that folks won’t be seeing much of me after Saturday, at least until power is restored, which could take days considering the speed of Dominion Power.

re: #65 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds

Speaking of riding it out, we’re debating that right now. The sustained wind is looking to be in the same region of Isabel, which we rode out back in ‘03. Our biggest worry is our roof, but if the wind doesn’t get much higher than 70mph, then we’re just going to hunker down and hope for the best. We’ll lose a lot of shingles, but so long as the roof’s still there, we can survive.

But I expect that folks won’t be seeing much of me after Saturday, at least until power is restored, which could take days considering the speed of Dominion Power.

Ummm…not.

The problem with a storm of this size is not so much the winds, but the storm surge. When Ike, a former Cat 4, hit Galveston, it was a Cat 2 storm, but because of its size it pushed 22 feet of water over the Bolivar peninsula on its northern edge. Be very afraid and run away. Really.

We’re still waiting to see how it will play out between now and tomorrow afternoon. If it looks like it’s going to be very bad, we will leave. But, right now, it looks like it might be manageable. We’re not living in a low-lying area, while most of the maps show we’d need a Cat-4 or above for this area to end up under water.

Our biggest concern right now is the roof, and whether it’ll stay in place or disappear on us. If we believe the wind’s powerful enough, we’re gone. That happens, I’ll let you all know. But, at it stands right now, we’re leaning towards riding it out.

It’s pretty wild that so many Republican congress-people are refusing to do Town Hall meetings nowadays, and you also see stuff like this.

A Republican committee in Minnesota has been caught creating an eBay-style auction site to sell access with politicians, including top lawmakers like Rep. John Kline (R-MN) and Rep. Erik Paulsen (R-MN), as well as State House Speaker Kurt Zellers (R-MN). With bidding starting at $250, the committee offered opportunities to “get up close and personal” with each lawmaker. The announcement for the auction was reportedly sent to area lobbyists.

re: #39 calochortus

My question is: If mainstream moderate to conservative Christians are made aware of this group of wackos and the full scope of their beliefs, will they support one of the Dominionist-approved candidates? Or will it put them off?

I would think they would support, because 1- they are too conformist not to, and more importantly, 2- they always have, and have allowed these “wackos” to thrive and flourish.

Look at their reaction to Glenn Beck, who is every bit as whacko, with equally whackjob theological beliefs.

So-called “dominionism” may be in the news this week, but it bears little difference from the Christian Coalition (90s-00s) and Moral Majority (late 70s-80s) that came before it. Same people, next generation, different name.

People keep missing this about Perry and that stupid The Response overgrown prayer meeting of his — it’s main sponsor was the American Family Association, which generates a lot of laughs because of Bryan Fischer. But the AFA has been around since the late 70s and was something of a predecessor, along with a bunch of others like Eagle Forum, and conservative televangelists dissemenating these ideas, to the Moral Majority.

Nobody is going to care about the so-called “dominionists” except those of us they have been trying to axe from the populace for the past generation; in fact, I expect other conservative Christians to hide behind their momentum and let them shoulder the work.
