Yeah, I know it's all rather wishful thinking, but considering that yesterday, they were predicting 115+mph winds upon landfall, it's not so impossible today.

All these computer generated images of clean, clear water gently covering New York City, its airports, its subways is really starting to piss me off. Did we learn nothing from Katrina and the real effects of massive flooding? Now, I'm not saying CNN or MSNBC need to add floating dead orcs, elves, or stock traders to their pictures, but don't do the 3-D images as if they're some kind of model in a swimming pool. Shit gets destroyed in storms like this. People need to board up and get the fuck out of the way, not wait for the gentle blue shadow to cover their car then disappear.

That reminds me:
Japan will more than triple the number of regions it checks for airborne radiation as more contaminated “hot spots” are discovered far from Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s crippled Fukushima nuclear power station.
The government said it will increase radiation monitoring by helicopter to 22 prefectures from the six closest to the plant, which began spewing radiation after an earthquake and tsunami struck the station in March. The plan comes after radioactive waste more than double the regulatory limit was found 200 kilometers (125 miles) from the plant this week.
Authorities have refused to give a cumulative figure for radiation released from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant after estimating in June that fallout in the six days following the quake was equal to 15 percent of total radiation released in the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986. The authorities have been too slow to widen airborne radiation testing, said Tetsuo Ito, the head of Kinki University’s Atomic Energy Research Institute in Osaka.
“The government should have expanded the monitoring area by helicopters much earlier to ease concerns among the public,” Ito said in a telephone interview yesterday.
Officials on Aug. 12 found compost in a kindergarten yard in Tokamachi city, Niigata prefecture containing radioactive cesium measuring 27,000 becquerels per kilogram, Kenichiro Kasuga, an official at the city’s disaster prevention department, said by phone.
Under Japanese law, waste measuring over 8,000 becquerels per kilogram must be treated as radioactive waste and can’t be buried in a landfill.
City officials found sludge measuring 18,900 becquerels per kilogram from radioactive cesium on the same day as part of tests done at 60 educational and childcare facilities, Kasuga said. The city government is storing the waste in drums until the government sets final guidelines for its disposal, he said.

Yeah. It's better to let the nuclear waste sit onsite at the power stations and then to have the NRC pay those power station operators billions of dollars a year for said storage. Most payments which are behind schedule.

Yep. And most of us are burning coal right now to power our computers. Ironic isn't it? And coal kills 1000s more people per year than nuclear. But nuclear of course still has that emotional and irrational stigma. It's like comparing airline disasters to car crashes. The former being the safer mode of transportation. Fukushima is like an airline crash and coal is like 1000 more car crashes every single day. But wait! So I hear there's a magical answer to our energy needs other than coal AND nuclear.

I don't think it's a question of "want". There are several good reasons for why "permanent repository" for nuclear waste is an absurd concept. Half life of radioactive material is one of them.

Such a law will let judges know, Geingrich went on, that "no judge will remain in office that tried to use sharia law." These words prompted a standing ovation from the crowd."

Typically I go another step further in saying we need to repeal the prohibition on recycling of nuclear waste. But people can choose. Do they want to accept the challenges of nuclear waste or face the potential of permanent damage to the atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels. While solar and wind can supplement power generation they come no where near the capacity that can be provided through nuclear.
Nuclear also doesn't have the environmental limitations found in solar and wind. Solar requires long period of sunlight. It also requires vast areas of land. Are people willing to sacrifice desert wild lands for solar farm facilities? The same is true with wind outside of off shore wind farm facilities. But that's the other issue regarding the aesthetic issues. Are people willing to sacrifice their "views" of a particular ridge top or beach in favor of clean energy? There is also the potential issue of offshore wind farms inhibiting fish populations.

The prohibition on nuclear fuel recycling was one of the stupidest policies passed. We've been here, wigging out over the problem of storing all this waste, when we could have be reprocessing it for usage in a new generation of nuclear reactors.

exas Gov. Rick Perry, a GOP presidential candidate, has signed an anti-gay marriage pledge from the National Organization for Marriage, the Associated Press reports. By signing the pledge, Perry has vowed to support a federal constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage throughout the country; defend the Defense of Marriage of Act in court; appoint judges and a U.S. attorney general who “will respect the original meaning” of the U.S. Constitution; support legislation allowing D.C. residents to vote on whether to overturn the district’s same-sex marriage law; and appoint a presidential commission to “investigate harassment of traditional marriage supporters.”
Although Perry’s decision to sign the NOM pledge comes as no surprise whatsoever to us, the AP writes that it “repudiat[es] his earlier comments that marriage rights should be left up to individual states.” For a recap of all that, go here.
Dumb, stupid bigots. They would rather have a president pledged to Maggie Gallagher than this country.

It was born out of nuclear security paranoia. I don't know why it would be so different to keep track of those materials much like they do everywhere else. It's an old law that needs to be repealed.

"Sharia has also randomly turned up in a marriage vow pledge that Bachmann signed and was sponsored by the right-wing group The Family Leader. The pledge contains a provision to oppose Sharia law."
The group, which spearheaded the successful campaign to unseat state supreme court judges who had voted to legalize gay marriage, has been courted by candidates like Michele Bachmann and Tim Pawlenty as a way of tapping into the state's huge bloc of conservative Christian caucusgoers. What's in the pledge? Here's a quick rundown:
Presidential candidates who sign The Marriage Vow will sign off on support of personal fidelity to his/her spouse, appointing faithful constitutionalists as judges, opposition to any redefinition of marriage, and prompt reform of uneconomic and anti-marriage aspects of welfare policy, tax policy, and divorce law. The Marriage Vow also outlines support for the legal advocacy for the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), humane efforts to protect women and children, rejection of anti-women Sharia Islam, safeguards for all married and unmarried U.S. military personnel, and commitment to downsizing government and the burden upon American families.
The document itself gets more specific. Point 5 begins with a "Recognition of the overwhelming statistical evidence that married people enjoy better health, better sex..." Point 9 rejects "forms of pornography and prostitution, infanticide, abortion and other types of coercion or stolen innocence."

Cain also regained his place supporting American values and religious liberty, freedom and equal justice under the law

Well, more good news, bad news.
Bad news is that Irene looks to have stabilized at around 90-100mph winds in the near future. And they're still projecting sustained winds of at least 85mph here.
Good news is that she's begun to swing NNE, with the new track going further and further east of us. If that trend continues, then it's a very good chance that we'll miss the brunt of those high winds. It's going to be bad, but compared to what they were predicting even 12 hours ago, it's a lot better for us here.

Irene looks to be losing strength as it makes it's way towards the coast, so we're hopeful here that what we'll just get is a rerun of Isabel, i.e. a lot of downed power lines, some homes damaged/demolished, and that's it.
Yeah, I know it's all rather wishful thinking, but considering that yesterday, they were predicting 115+mph winds upon landfall, it's not so impossible today.
The most dangerous part of an hurricane or storm isn't the wind; it's the rain.

True, but the projected rainfall here is roughly in the same ballpark as what we got with the last Nor'Easter. And that flooded some of the streets close-by, but we stayed dry for the duration. Same for Isabel back in '03.
Only way I'm really worried about the rain is if we start losing shingles and spring a leak. In which case, Allstate is getting a call as soon as their local office opens back up.

Hence why the cities in the path have put out mandatory evacuations for areas in the path of Irene that are subject to said surge. Everywhere else is basically under a "leave if you choose to, but if you stay, you're on your own for the duration" understanding.

The song was, I've read, about a soldier in Cuba during the Spanish-American War of 1898. The soldier might have been from Galveston or else simply embarked from there to Cuba. Hence the martial imagery and the fear of not making it back home. It was a curious song, lyrically, to be a country hit in the middle of the Vietnam War.

Food prices... will rise even more?
Crop troubles send grains surging
U.S. corn and soybean futures ended sharply higher Friday, climbing on a combination of crop concerns, outside market support and technical buying.
Corn futures for September delivery at the Chicago Board of Trade jumped 20 1/4 cents, or 2.8% to $7.55. December corn climbed 22 1/2 cents to $7.68, gaining 5.9% for the week.
Both corn and soybeans are being fueled by a hot, dry summer that has stressed the crop. Troubling reports from a major crop tour throughout the week reaffirmed traders' worries.
"The crop is bad, and it appears to be getting worse," said Joel Karlin, analyst for Western Milling, a California feed company.
Traders noted that the forecast for the rest of August remains relatively dry in much of the Midwest, which could cause further damage to soybean yield potential.
Much of the damage to the corn crop, which has an earlier growing season, is already done.Professional Farmers of America on Friday forecast the U.S. corn crop at 12.484 billion bushels, well below federal expectations, raising concerns that the coming harvest won't replenish already-tight inventories.
The group, known as Pro Farmer, released its estimates after the close Friday, at the end of its annual tour through the U.S. corn belt. Tour findings are only one part of how Pro Farmer arrives at its forecast.

I'm perfectly willing to sacrifice a square of desert 100 miles on a side. That would do the trick for solar energy, with room to spare. Quite possibly a smaller square would suffice, but let's think big. We could put that down in Arizona and not lose 10000 cattle.
Considering that millions of species are at risk from global warming, it's irrelevant that there may be an endangered creosote variant in that square.
I'm perfectly willing to sacrifice a view or two. Of course, I LIKE the look of those wind catchers. But if I didn't, so what? The stakes are too high to get all squeamish.
And I'm perfectly willing to see more nuclear power plants built, even if I think that some sort of Three Mile Island or Fukushima event is a real possibility. Again, consider the stakes. We will be losing more land to rising sea levels every year than we might, in our worst nightmares, make uninhabitable as a result of a nuclear incident.
We are to the point where, just as with our financial deficit, good options don't exist. There are difficult options galore. Blood, tears, toil, and sweat are our choices. We must rise to the occasion, grasp the nettle, and build what has to be built. We must do it right, which means lots of R&D now while we get our ducks in a row, followed, as soon as feasible, by trillions of dollars of investment. So long as the R&D is going swimmingly, and for now it is, it pays to hold off on building the things, except as a way to gain experience and competence for later larger scale construction. But once we hit the point of diminishing returns and cannot improve the efficiency of the current designs by something like 10% per year, it'll be time to ramp up to very large scale production.

POV | Armadillo - Documentary Trailer - POV 2011 | PBS
[Video]
By the time the new Danish documentary Armadillo screened in its native country and elsewhere in Europe — picking up acclaim and awards — the film had already set off a political firestorm. In this cinéma vérité portrait of a platoon of Danish soldiers fighting under NATO auspices in Afghanistan, the final dizzying, gut-wrenching firefight filmed by director Janus Metz and cameraman Lars Skree (and by a camera strapped to one soldier’s helmet) appears to show the soldiers executing wounded Taliban.
[...]
Armadillo sticks close to the soldiers, as jarringly captured in repeated scrambles for cover by Metz and Skree under audible fire. The film faithfully renders the soldiers’ point of view but, in true vérité fashion, neither approves nor condemns what happens, allowing the ambiguities and contradictions of the battlefield — and the soldiers’ evolving attitudes — to speak for themselves. What is clear is that the soldiers find a harsher climate and geography than anyone anticipated, and an enemy more determined and skilled than anyone told them to expect.
More critically, relations with local Afghan civilians quickly deteriorate. Giving food scraps to begging children and explaining to wary village elders that they are there to protect them earns the soldiers little good will. Afghans complain about fields, livestock and homes destroyed by the soldiers’ actions and say that it is the ISAF’s presence that is bringing the war upon them. They complain most bitterly about civilian deaths caused by the troops — and not without cause. A mortar spotter, Martin, mistakenly lands a grenade on a little girl. Even the children begin to chant, “Go home!” as the soldiers pass on patrol.
[...]
“With Armadillo, I was curious to explore how the micro level of war — where human interaction takes place — affects one of the greatest conflicts of our time,” says director Janus Metz. “I’ve always been interested in making films about people who go through life-altering experiences. This film involves a rite of passage where the men are ultimately faced with themselves and their own humanity — it is universal and basic. In the context of war and the young men who are fighting, I was interested in finding out how the perception of masculinity — the good, the bad, the civilized and the barbaric — is reflected in action and how these concepts are adapted in this coming-of-age story.”

The African Union can fuck right off.
African Union refuses to recognise Libya's new TNC government
It took more than eight hours for the AU to decide not to throw its support behind the rebel administration yesterday during a meeting in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
Calling for an immediate ceasefire in the fighting, South African President Jacob Zuma, was one of only three African heads of state to attend the summit.
He said that the AU would not recognise the TNC as the legitimate government as long as the fighting continued. "If there is fighting, there is fighting. So we can't stand here and say this is the legitimate [government] now. The process is fluid. That's part of what we inform countries – whether there is an authority to recognise," Mr Zuma said.
The AU has instead called for an "all-inclusive transitional government" to be set up in Libya, a government that would also involve some of the officials from Gaddafi's side. But the proposal that was made by the AU officials has been rejected by the members of the TNC.

Only "fluid" I see are the puddles of piss who think Gaddafi deserves a place at the table, now that he's been deposed. So long as the AU and other "reluctant" powers refuse to throw their weight behind the rebels, the fighting will not abate, because loyalist forces will believe that the fight can still be won.

Six of the men came from the same colony, Manitoba, in the eastern lowlands of Bolivia.
The men have been charged with child abuse and rape, and forming a criminal gang.
They are now in custody in a prison in the town of Cotoca, in the Santa Cruz region.
Colony elders suspected something was wrong when they wondered why one man was getting up so late in the mornings, and they decided to shadow him, said prosecutor Freddy Perez.
They then handed the case over to the police.
One suspect, who is from another Mennonite colony, is accused of complicity and of selling viagra to the men and narcotic sprays allegedly used on victims while they slept.
Denying the charges against him, the suspect said he was a veterinary surgeon and used the drugs in his work.

I had no idea. I just thought the Mennonites were Amish, but drove cars.
Originating in the Netherlands, these followers of 16th Century Anabaptist Menno Simons, a radical Protestant reformer, relocated to Russia in the 1770s and then to Canada in the late 19th Century.
They fled persecution for their refusal to participate in military action or swap their Germanic dialect for the host language.
A 7,000-strong community moved to Mexico between 1922 and 1927 after negotiating temporary fiscal benefits, autonomy over education in their mother tongue and exemption from military service.
Economic success
Since then their numbers have swelled to some 60,000 in Chihuahua's 25 Mennonite colonies, while smaller settlements are found in Durango, Campeche, Zacatecas and Tamaulipas.

Wrong...it was the Peshtigo Fire in Wisconsin (up to 2500+ lives lost), which, ironically, started the same day as the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 (which comes in second in number of American lives lost strictly due to fire).
Fun Fact: The son of Mrs. O'Leary (in whose barn the fire began), James O'Leary, later became one of Chicago's gambling kingpins. In May 1920, he was the person whose whiskey delivery James "Big Jim" Coloismo was waiting for when Colosimo was murdered by Frankie Yale.

Ideal response: Rick Perry< Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum show Ron Paul photos of the aftermath of the Galveston hurricane, then explain how hurricane response is a proper role for the federal government based on how it's prevented disaster in their states. Then they stop a mudhole it Ron Paul and walk it dry.
/Yes, I really do think Ron Paul should literally get his ass kicked during the next debate for this jackass line. Hopefully, this stupid remark will end his political career. Ayn Rand would accept a federal role in this sort of crisis for sobbing out loud.

Howe allegedly molested the girl between 30 and 35 years ago when she was 5 to 10 years old, sheriff's officials said.
The woman is now 42. She reported the crime about two weeks ago, officials said.
[Link: www.tampabay.com...]
I knew a guy who worked in the Crimes Against Children division of the local Sheriff's office. More than likely they had the woman call this guy and admit what he did while recording the conversation. And if the girl was older then 12 when it happened, I think the statute of limitations would have run out. But since she was under age 11, the charge will likely be bumped up to Capital Sexual Battery on a child.

Eh, it's not that hard. Especially the old oil-burners (all I ever had in Beantown). What sucks, though, is when the power goes out - no heat at all, then.
Nothing to do but start smashing up the furniture, throwing it in the fireplace, and, once alight, drinking until unconsciousness supervenes. Which is also what one does whenever relationship difficulties surface.

Er that was supposed to be directed at you. I think this sentence is key:
Applicants began flooding teaching programs, not because the salaries were so high but because autonomy and respect made the job attractive.
The gigantic anti-intellectual attitude in the US, which as of recent been nurtured and exploited by the GOP, makes that a significant challenge. Not only does it mean that teachers have little respect in our nation-- shameful state of affairs-- but why go become a climate scientist if you're going to constantly read articles claiming you're a fraud and a crook?

Wild days of youth, eh?
It's a miracle so many males of the species survive to 30. I know I had a housemate and an ex who had a sort of dead pool involving me, with the ex wagering $20 that I wouldn't live to 30, and the housemate wagering the same amount I'd be committed to the state nervous hospital and/or married by 30.
Great friends I had.
I doubt they would if it weren't for the female of the species.

Surgeon General Calls for Health Over Hair
The United States surgeon general has a new message for American women: It is O.K. to have a bad hair day.
As the country’s leading spokespeople on public health, surgeons general often weigh in on issues of national importance like tobacco and disease prevention. But when the current surgeon general, Dr. Regina M. Benjamin, visited a trade show in Atlanta this month, it was to talk about what has become something of a pet cause: Too many women forgoing exercise because they’re worried it will ruin their hair.
“Oftentimes you get women saying, ‘I can’t exercise today because I don’t want to sweat my hair back or get my hair wet,’ ” she said in an interview. “When you’re starting to exercise, you look for reasons not to, and sometimes the hair is one of those reasons.”
Although it doesn't keep me out of the gym, it does keep me out of the pool. Chlorine + hair = bad, bad, bad.

re: #65 000G
I don't think it's a question of "want". There are several good reasons for why "permanent repository" for nuclear waste is an absurd concept. Half life of radioactive material is one of them.
The isotopes with half lives of more than 5 years are the problem. Shorter-lived isotopes can be stored on site until they mostly cook off. At the other end, half lives of a billion years cook off too slowly to be all that dangerous. You can carry around a pound of uranium in your pocket for a week and not get any serious radiation dose.
There are salt deposits that are hundreds of millions of years old. If they've been there that long, for all relevant human purposes they're permanent. And in all that time, there's never been a subterranean flow. The NV repository would have used one of those.
The only way the repository is impermanent is that later generations of people may want to dig it up to get at the waste. But there can never be any system to protect humanity from folly. Where there's a will, there's a way to be stupid.

Yeah, it's somewhere around there. And it's always really hard to get people to abandon their homes. Sometimes impossible. If people don't have updated pet vaccinations, for example, their pets cannot be boarded or go to a hotel. So, if there are people with pets who don't have relatives they can go to, what are the actually supposed to do? I haven't seen an actual solution to this.

re: #438 Obdicut
It doesn't offend. But you've got to accept that some innocent people are going to be killed by the death penalty. If you're okay with that, if you think the value of a death penalty is worth people innocent of that crime being put to death, then you're intellectually consistent about it.
Depends on how often it happens. If it's once in a century, that's regrettable but I'd rather take my chances on getting executed for a crime I didn't commit, than murdered for a payroll I didn't carry.
There is no perfect safety anywhere and the idea has to be to strike a balance. An executed man will, and this at least is a sure thing, never kill anybody again. Those sentenced to life in prison, on the other hand, do kill guards and fellow inmates from time to time, they win release from governors who write pardons to avenge themselves on a legislature about to impeach them, and they escape and go on killing sprees. The list here is long.
Those contemplating atrocious murders, just because it seems like a good tactic, calculate their odds. For these, the ones who would be eligible for the death penalty anyhow, it's surely a deterrent. That, too, contributes to public safety.

Wrong...it was the Peshtigo Fire in Wisconsin (up to 2500+ lives lost), which, ironically, started the same day as the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 (which comes in second in number of American lives lost strictly due to fire).
You can exempt the lives lost immediately upon impact to blunt force trauma. That includes all the passengers, and some number of people on the floors that were hit.
As to the rest, if a building burns down and there are people who die because of trauma sustained during the collapse, those are fire deaths.
By my reckoning, WTC fires killed some 2700 people. The planes weren't full.

Nice false dichotomy to start off with. There's no reason to think that if we don't execute people, the likelihood of being murdered is higher.
Those contemplating atrocious murders, just because it seems like a good tactic, calculate their odds. For these, the ones who would be eligible for the death penalty anyhow, it's surely a deterrent. That, too, contributes to public safety.
Nice. Don't bother to make an argument. Just make an assertion, claim it 'surely' must be true, and be done with it.

Meanwhile, in reality, the murder rates in non-death penalty states are consistently lower than those in death-penalty states.
[Link: www.deathpenaltyinfo.org...]
And law enforcement does not see it as an effective deterrent.
[Link: www.deathpenaltyinfo.org...]
The graph to the right shows the results of a 2008 poll of 500 police chiefs in the United States, conducted by R.T. Strategies of Washington, DC. Police chiefs ranked the death penalty last when asked to name one area as "most important for reducing violent crime." Higher priorities included increasing the number of police officers, reducing drug abuse, and creating a better economy.
Image: LawEnforcementViews.jpg
And, of course, criminologists overwhelming say that is not a deterrent.
But hey, what do experts, police chiefs, and actual facts know about the subject? "Surely" it must be true that the death penalty is a great deterrent.

I seriously think they're overhyping this storm. Don't bother with the AC unit. You in NY? It's going to come in as a low Cat 1 but probably a tropical storm. I just posted on Randy's page. Mostly down trees and possible power outages. You won't lose your windows. If you're in a house, make sure you bring inside anything that can blow around like lawn furniture and fixtures. It's also moving pretty quickly, 13mph. Andrew came through at 15mph which was over us a 2-3 hours. This is no Andrew (180-200mph winds).
If you normally flood in a bad storm than that could be a problem. I think they're predicting 8-10". Move your car to higher ground.
Also, the longer it stays over land the more it will break up.

I'm in the middle of Manhattan, on the 4th floor, so I won't have to worry about floods. You don't want things blowing around outside that can bash your windows, but your high up. The only way a window will be breached if it something flies into it, but you won't have that trouble. Same with trees, if a tree falls into the house, but I still don't think that's going to be a problem for most people.
There are two wind issues with these storms. Sustained winds, that's constant pounding and gusts, periodic winds or squalls. I don't think there's going to be serious sustained winds because of how fast it's moving and the winds aren't high enough to do serious structural damage. On a house, you could lose some tiles on the roof, but not if it's a tropical storm.
Obviously, you don't want to go outside!
If they overhype and a serious storm comes through, people won't pay attention especially since you guys never get these storms.

Okay, so Bloomberg just explained the reason for the evacuation is not wind effects, but the storm surge, and that that is still predicted to be large and powerful, even though the storm has declined in power. Makes sense.
Flooding is an issue. Do you usually flood where you are in a bad storm?

For sure. After all of his rhetoric about the impending storm surge he leaves those poor guys hanging. Of course, try getting any sympathy from Americans about prisoners. They think everyone in jail is a mass murderer not worthy of consideration. Of course, there's more than prisoners on that island and includes guards, medical, and other prison personnel. It just doesn't add up.

I'm in the middle of Manhattan, on the 4th floor, so I won't have to worry about floods. We've got tons of food, tons of water, tons of already-ground coffee, some concentrated iced coffee if our gas goes out, tons of cat food, lots of food, batteries, an AM radio, batteries, lighters, candles. etc. etc. etc.

Yes, there should be a contingency plan to move/take the prisoners somewhere else in case of a natural disaster, but like most people living in the city that aren't seeking 'higher ground" (like yourself) or have an alternative to staying, what would the alternative for Rikers be?

re: #567 Gus 802
Decutur just posted this:
"I just checked the topographical data for Rikers and the National Hurricane Center’s storm surge risk profile, and it seems that in the worst-case scenario (if NYC took a direct hit from a category 3 hurricane), parts of Rikers island would flood, but the vast majority of structures would not be at risk. The bulk of the island is about 25′ above sea level, with the eastern part reaching heights of >60′. In a direct hit under a category 3 storm, the island would be at risk of 22′-24′ surges. While that’s not a great safety buffer, both the track of the storm taking it directly over the east river, and the strength of the storm maintaining cat. 3 winds that far up the coast are highly unlikely. That said, it’s very disturbing that the city does not have an island-wide evacuation plan as the unthinkable is (remotely) possible."
So, that they don't have a plan sucks, but it should be okay.

I'm certainly not offended and I wouldn't shed a tear if that fuckbag or others like got strapped down to Old Sparky, but I'm opposed to the death penalty because our justice system is imperfect, and I don't think any imperfect system should have the power to take a life.
I'm against the death penalty and it doesn't offend me, either. But one of the main reasons I'm against it is the state should not be used for people to take out their selective aggressions on others, and it's also arbitrarily applied. There are too many other cases equally horrid that people just don't know about, but will yell death penalty at things they do know about.
Another example from just a year ago: this pediatrician killed her own child. It even made the news but because (imo) the girl was adopted and thus socially expendable nobody really gave a crap.
Deborah Mark faces license revocation, arraignment
Authorities said the child was the victim of “extensive and extended” child abuse. She died July 2 after police responded to the Mark residence at 441 Laurel Hill Drive in the Autumn Ridge subdivision in Providence. The parents, who also have an 8-year-old biological daughter, were indicted on multiple charges by the Wilson County grand jury July 12 after a 10-day investigation.
Charges for Dr. Mark include one count of Felony First Degree Murder, one count Perpetration of Aggravated Child Abuse, one count Aggravated Child Abuse, and four counts Child Abuse. Charges for Steven Mark include one count Aggravated Child Abuse and Neglect, one count Criminal Responsibility for Aggravated Child Abuse, one count Aggravated Assault by Failure to Protect, four counts Child Abuse and one count Accessory After the Fact.
It went somewhat under the radar because of the other adoption horror in TN, the lady who put her son on a plane back to Russia, saying she no longer wished to parent him. I still don't know what kind of time Dr. Marks has to do for her murder.
But hey, gay marriage/adoption...that's bad for the chillllllldrennnnnnn e_e

[Link: www.nhc.noaa.gov...]
This is accurate for a Cat 1:
People, livestock, and pets struck by flying or falling debris could be injured or killed. Older (mainly pre-1994 construction) mobile homes could be destroyed, especially if they are not anchored properly as they tend to shift or roll off their foundations. Newer mobile homes that are anchored properly can sustain damage involving the removal of shingle or metal roof coverings, and loss of vinyl siding, as well as damage to carports, sunrooms, or lanais. Some poorly constructed frame homes can experience major damage, involving loss of the roof covering and damage to gable ends as well as the removal of porch coverings and awnings. Unprotected windows may break if struck by flying debris. Masonry chimneys can be toppled. Well-constructed frame homes could have damage to roof shingles, vinyl siding, soffit panels, and gutters. Failure of aluminum, screened-in, swimming pool enclosures can occur. Some apartment building and shopping center roof coverings could be partially removed. Industrial buildings can lose roofing and siding especially from windward corners, rakes, and eaves. Failures to overhead doors and unprotected windows will be common. Windows in high-rise buildings can be broken by flying debris. Falling and broken glass will pose a significant danger even after the storm. There will be occasional damage to commercial signage, fences, and canopies. Large branches of trees will snap and shallow rooted trees can be toppled. Extensive damage to power lines and poles will likely result in power outages that could last a few to several days. Hurricane Dolly (2008) is an example of a hurricane that brought Category 1 winds and impacts to South Padre Island, Texas.

When Irene was over Hispaniola, 800 miles away, they were telling people to start boarding up just so they could give Home Depot and Loews a boost. Nice false dichotomy to start off with. There's no reason to think that if we don't execute people, the likelihood of being murdered is higher.
Nice. Don't bother to make an argument. Just make an assertion, claim it 'surely' must be true, and be done with it.
After all, it's not like people who murder people live any sort of life where being murdered themselves is a likely risk.
Sheesh. It's like a 'poor logic' competition.
Well, you win, hands down.
There is plenty of evidence, even in the literature, that punishment deters crime. Good grief. You will actually argue that the death penalty is not a deterrent? Or even that it's a dubious assertion that requires proof?
If you wanted to, you could argue that the lives of atrocious killers are still sacrosanct, and that they should be permitted to live out their natural span. That's something that at any rate cannot be disproved. You could argue that they might eventually mend their ways, and we shouldn't give up on them. But nooo. You have to go and argue that they don't reckon their odds.

Yep. A lot of murderers come from places where their most likely cause of death is, in fact, being murdered themselves. It's something they live with all the time, and yet somehow you think they'll be terrified of death row.

If you want, at any point, to back up your claims, feel free. Explain, for example, why the murder rate in states without death penalties are lower than in those with death penalties.

And, of course, criminologists overwhelming say that is not a deterrent.
But hey, what do experts, police chiefs, and actual facts know about the subject? "Surely" it must be true that the death penalty is a great deterrent.
The correlation is causation fallacy. Here we go, logic 101.
Homes with rat traps set out have more rats. That doesn't prove that rat traps cause rats. The death penalty is the response to the problem, not the cause of the problem.
If police chiefs think that other steps than the death penalty give more bang for the buck, they're probably right. So what? The whole idea of punishment, of any sort, is that the prospect of the punishment is a deterrent. And it is.
Why would the death penalty be any different?

The deterrent with incarceration or death (as in death penalty), isn't that people are scared off from committing crimes. The deterrent is that long prison sentences or the death penalty keep people from being on the streets where they may continue to murder.
I'm of the "life is sacrosanct" mindset, and I don't think they government should be in the business of having its citizens sit on a jury to decide to kill another human being. I couldn't do it. It would be, for me, the same as me killing the person outright myself.

It's tiresome to prove that the sun rises in the East.
Sure. But you can do it, rather easily. In your case, you can't actually back up what you're saying.
The death penalty is an instance of punishment.
Sure.
If you grant that tickets deter speeding, then why argue that other penalties don't deter other crimes?
For the following reasons:
1. Many of those who commit murder are coming from backgrounds where they're #1 most likely cause of death is homicide. These are not people for whom the idea of death is foreign or especially intimidating. Many of them actually have their expected lifespan increased by going to death row.
2. Because someone who's speeding has something significant to lose. Get enough tickets and your insurance premiums rise. Get a single ticket and it's still immediate money out of your pocket. ANd yet, nearly everyone still speeds. So it may be useful in keeping people from speeding much, but not from speeding at all. So you're comparing a qualitative thing with a quantitative thing.
Honestly, do you seriously think comparing approaches to speeding and murder is actually a good idea? You really think policing strategies to deal with those are similar or comparable?
3. Because speeding tickets operate with a very low bar of evidence, and are easy to prove. Everyone gets away with some amount of speeding, but if you get caught, you'll most likely pay the price. The majority of homicides in many areas go unsolved-- many are even basically uninvestigated. Those committing the murders are often going to jail on other charges anyway. Prison is also a punishment; since to you punishment is all efficacious, why is the death penalty more efficacious than prison?
Seriously. You haven't made an argument. You might as well just type "The death penalty is a deterrent" over and over, because nothing else you've said ads up to jack shit.

In Britain, fewer criminals carry guns. Most use knives or just trust to their size and strength. So, going on the evidence [and will you call this, too, an unsupported statement, backed only by comic books?], that penalty would be a big deterrent and would have a big impact on the rate of gun crime. Criminals do in fact reckon their odds, and this is further proof of it.

We're never going to execute enough people to actually impact the murder rate significantly. And that's not actually the meaning of 'deterrent'. A deterrent, in criminologists parlance, is something that makes someone not commit a crime because of the consequences.

As always, your opinions are well thought out, but I'd like to point out that just because we've made a lot of progress in this country doesn't mean we should be satisfied. As for the whole "crime that screams for justice" thing, I agree it's tempting to wish death on child killers and other assorted human garbage, but that criteria just seems too subjective. Just think of the West Memphis 3. It's virtually impossible to definitively prove they didn't commit the crime they're convicted of, but anyone with common sense can see there is clearly reasonable doubt and then some. They now sit in prison for life (one of them on death row) because a scared jury convicted based on prejudice and despite a total lack of evidence. Any system that can fuck things like this up so badly shouldn't have any power over life and death.

re: #662 reine.de.tout
The deterrent with incarceration or death (as in death penalty), isn't that people are scared off from committing crimes. The deterrent is that long prison sentences or the death penalty keep people from being on the streets where they may continue to murder.
I'm of the "life is sacrosanct" mindset, and I don't think they government should be in the business of having its citizens sit on a jury to decide to kill another human being. I couldn't do it. It would be, for me, the same as me killing the person outright myself.
Oh I could do it..If I had been on the Casey Anthony Jury I would have changed the world...I would have messed with those other 11 dough heads on that Jury.. You'd buy the book and watch the lifetime movie..
*wink*
Can you imagine me on the OJ jury...
OK..I know he's guilty but should I take the whole Chris Rock approach and say I don't agree with this but I understand OJ...
I think deep inside we all want to judge people.. I have never been asked to be on a jury...I'm still waiting to involved in the trial of a Billionaire charged with killing his wife and lover in bed..

According to the FBI, in 2008 14,180 people were murdered in America. I shudder to think what that number would be without the AMAZINGLY effective deterrent that is the death penalty...we may well be at the point where it would be easier to count the people who HAVEN'T been murdered yet! ///
That's roughly the number of people killed each year in DWI accidents. Why is the penalty for sticking a gun in a 7/11 clerk's face so different than the time actually served for DWI?
675 | reine.de.tout Sat, Aug 27, 2011 9:32:58am |
re: #669 Obdicut
We're never going to execute enough people to actually impact the murder rate significantly. And that's not actually the meaning of 'deterrent'. A deterrent, in criminologists parlance, is something that makes someone not commit a crime because of the consequences.
Obdi - right.
I'm actually perfectly aware of the definition of "deterrent".
I don't care if the threat of punishment deters a person from committing a crime.
All I care about is that criminals, particularly those responsible for heinous crimes (murder, rape, child molestation, etc), are off the street and unable to continue. And for society, THAT'S the benefit of incarceration. Not punishment, though that also serves a purpose for justice. But strictly that dangerous people aren't allowed to roam around and continue to be a danger to the rest of us.

In Florida you get 10 years automatic for robbing a 7-11 with a gun. 20 if you shoot the gun and life if you shoot someone.
DUI/Manslaughter is 15 years (although there is sometimes a plea deal)

I'm all for incarceration. Child molesters, rapists, cop and child killers, murderers for hire, serial killers, etc. Lock 'em up and throw away the key. But don't kill them. There's a fine line between protecting the public and revenge, and the state has no place exacting revenge.

But that's pretty sideline to the discussion of the death penalty.
It also opens the door to other problems and questions; if the only criteria you're using is likely recidivism, then some sorts of murderers are far less likely to ever kill again than others are. That is part of why we judge 'crimes of passion' to be less worthy of long sentences than pre-meditated murders, but that's rather a rough measure, to me. Someone who killed someone in a fit of rage once seems likely, to me, to do it again, maybe more so than a guy who was obsessed with revenge against a specific person and planned out their murder exactingly.

We lose our power for at least a week when we have a storm.
So here's what I found myself doing the last time:
1) I went to the Apple store in the mall when it got its power back (before we did) to check my e-mail and send a few;
2) The mall was FULL of people using the power outlets in the corridors to charge up their cell phones and laptop batteries (and I was right there with 'em!).

Emergency officials in Nash County said a man was crushed to death outside his home by a large limb blown down by the storm. Nash County Emergency Management Director Brian Brantley said the man was walking outside his home in a rural area of the county about 10:20 a.m. today when the limb struck him.

Puerto Rican State Senator Roberto Arango is, of course, a Republican, which means he has to be anti-gay. Arango is so anti-gay and so disgusted by the acts of gays that he has to put his photographs up on gay site for gay dudes. How Republican of him. Gawker keeps on saying he's a Puerto Rican Anthony Weiner. No. Weiner is a Democrat - meaning he was sending his pics to adult females.
And...
Here's the kicker: if these pictures were just of full frontal that happened to appear on a gay site - he could possibly survive politically. Sure. Documenting weight loss. It could happen. But that wasn't ALL the pictures that (ahem) ended up on the gay app. After the break, NSFW even though it's blurred.

Right now NYC metro is getting rain - the outermost rain from Irene, but it's intermittent without any real wind.
That's going to change as the day wears on and the storm moves closer.
Storm surge is a huge concern because the storm is so big, and Masters and other meterologists are warning that the storm is punching at least one class over the Cat 1/2 it was forecast on the wave action because of the size.
The slow pace the storm is crawling up the coast means that the training effect of the rain is going to unleash significant flooding in parts, and that rain, combined with the wind may take down lots of trees and result in power outages that may take several days to clear.

That is good news. I was on the phone with my Dad and told him as it was posted. It is a borderline hurricane.

He's nothing if not quotable. And his presser from yesterday is classic.
To paraphrase:
It's now 4:30pm. Your tanning time is up. Get off the beach and get away from the coast.
The subtext - get the frak off the beach.

My wife just said, "Aw, Christie...I love you. Get the hell off the beach!" She agrees, if his positions were better, he'd be an even better politician.
759 | Gus Sat, Aug 27, 2011 11:15:33am |
So far three deaths in North Carolina. One from a falling tree limb. Another from a heart attack while putting up plywood and the other from driving through a flooded street and hitting a tree. From that I'm looking at one person who probably had either heart disease or a poor diet leading to a heart attack which probably would have occurred at a future date. The driver was probably speeding and hydroplaned into the tree -- i.e. driver error. The tree limb probably comes the closest to a natural disaster death.

What are New Yorkers eating while Hurricane Irene passes over?
...if there’s one thing New Yorkers love during Category 2 hurricanes, it’s bread. Literally, every single bag of bread, from white to wheat to 7-grain to raisin cinnamon swirl, had vanished, with nary a hot dog bun to be found. A lone can of Pringles listed by like a tumbleweed in the wind.
...
The second most depleted item was chips and dip. Nothing beats watching CNN’s Roland Emmerich-approved 3D depictions of water converging on the city while munching on Tostitos Lime-Flavored Scoops.
...
However, even in emergencies, New Yorkers will avoid Chester’s Butter-Flavored Puffcorn, even at the reasonable price of $2 a bag.[Link: www.scoutingny.com...]

re: #762 jaunte
My wife was commenting about this. Why bread? I don't get it.
We've got some nice egg salad, some chicken, some salads. Not really expecting a power outage, but have enough ice/dry ice to make that relatively trivial.
And we've got stuff we could eat purely cold that doesn't require refrigeration, but that's boring.

Amateurs. You go to your favorite gourmet food store and stock up. DiBruno's was practically cleaned out by the time I got there yesterday.

re: #763 Obdicut
This entry was the real mystery:
Finally, there seems to have been a bizarre run on soy-based ice creams (note the Haagen-Dazs by comparison). However, as much as we all love to wolf down a pint as Irene’s eye finally passes over, the Coconut Bliss Gluten-Free option was flat out rejected by New York.
Pre-power failure comfort food?

re: #767 jaunte
I think it's the madness of crowds. People see that some items are gone, and so they buy those because they might run out-- without even asking themselves "But is that what I want?"

Heh... I don't listen to the weather heads on anywhere other than Weather Channel, and read the radars/reports from the NWS/NOAA/NHC directly. Far more sober evaluations.

I am using the time today to do some cooking of stuff that can be served/eaten cold if there is a power outage. Also loading the cooler with ice as a contingency as well.
