Michele Bachmann (R-Mars): God Sent Hurricane Irene to Tell Us to Cut Spending

Good grief
Wingnuts • Views: 33,528

I’ve never seen such a crop of loud, obnoxious God-botherers as the GOP candidates for President. The religious right hasn’t just made a resurgence — they’ve staged a takeover.

Now Michele “Crazy Eyes” Bachmann is telling her audience that hurricanes and earthquakes are messages from on high, God’s endearing way of commanding Americans to vote for her so she can cut spending on FEMA and the National Weather Service.

“I don’t know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We’ve had an earthquake; we’ve had a hurricane. He said, ‘Are you going to start listening to me here?’ Listen to the American people because the American people are roaring right now. They know government is on a morbid obesity diet and we’ve got to rein in the spending.”

This election will go down in history as the Year of Right Wing Magical Thinking.

UPDATE at 8/29/11 9:35:26 am

And now Bachmann says it was just a joke. Pay no attention to all the other evidence of her extreme religious fanaticism — she was only kidding!

God's got to be getting tired of all this nonsense.

I'm not one to speak for God, but I'd imagine He would say something along the lines of, "Stop speaking for Me. I have a voice, if I have something to say, I can say it for myself. Otherwise, read what I've already said and learn from it, you ignoramuses."

It's quite humorous actually. Her handlers keep rushing behind her to clean up her mess.

On the other hand, maybe if this presidential gig doesn't work out, she can be a stand up comic!

what's that, god? you say you're furious at right wing politicians in washington claiming to speak for you? you're trying to tell them to pay attention to jesus' message of charity and concern for the least of us before you blow the washington monument over on their self-serving asses?

7 Mostly sane, most of the time.  Mon, Aug 29, 2011 9:34:11am

If (note that "if") God had sent this hurricane, wouldn't the point be something more in keeping with what He normally talks about, like helping your neighbor and showing kindness?

8 RanchTooth  Mon, Aug 29, 2011 9:34:59am

Are you there God? It's Me, Michelle. I could use a few more natural disasters to help convince the rest of the world of your omnipresence.

K Thx Bye.

Psh, that's old theology. We live in the End Times, that means that God is clearly angry about the current state of the world. As long as our opponents are in power, that is.

Why don't these asshats consider that God is telling the fundies and evangelists that they've got everything wrong and need to shut the fuck up.

12 Talking Point Detective  Mon, Aug 29, 2011 9:36:47am

What's interesting is that I was just about to come over here to post a slightly different quote:

"Washington, D.C., you'd think by now they'd get the message. An earthquake, a hurricane. Are you listening? The American people have done everything they can, and now it's time for an act of God and we're getting it," she said, drawing some laughs from her audience.

Either one of those two is a misquote, or we have two quotes at two different times, and yet...

"Of course she was saying it in jest," Alice Stewart, spokesperson for Bachmann's campaign, said.

Everyone except the Tea Partiers and other extremists will abandon the campaign of Bachmann and Perry. If either of them gets the nomination, the only question remaining is whether or not Obama will be able to marshal enough support among independents and Dems.

13 tnguitarist  Mon, Aug 29, 2011 9:37:11am
They know government is on a morbid(ly) obesity diet

Perhaps Mrs. Obama could talk them in to eating some veggies. They would be ok with that, right?

14 Fat Bastard Vegetarian  Mon, Aug 29, 2011 9:37:58am

GOD: Arthur! Arthur, King of the Britons! Oh, don't grovel! If
there's one thing I can't stand, it's people groveling.
ARTHUR: Sorry--
GOD: And don't apologize. Every time I try to talk to someone it's
"sorry this" and "forgive me that" and "I'm not worthy". What are you
doing now!?
ARTHUR: I'm averting my eyes, oh Lord.
GOD: Well, don't. It's like those miserable Psalms-- they're so
depressing. Now knock it off!
ARTHUR: Yes, Lord.
GOD: Right! Arthur, King of the Britons -- your Knights of the Round
Table shall have a task to make them an example in these dark times.
ARTHUR: Good idea, oh Lord!
GOD: 'Course it's a good idea! Behold! Arthur, this is the Holy
Grail. Look well, Arthur, for it is your sacred task to seek
this Grail. That is your purpose, Arthur -- the Quest for the
Holy Grail.
ARTHUR: A blessing!
LAUNCELOT: A blessing from the Lord!
GALAHAD: God be praised!

It's not very intuitive of the Lord Almighty to send a message about cutting spending by inflicting a storm that will require a whole bunch of extra spending.

Umm ok Michelle, why would God send a hurricane that will cost billions to encourage government to rein in the spending?

And if the Almighty wanted to tell Obama something, wouldn't he/she have more efficient and less costly method to drive his/her message home. Like sending the nice Nespresso guy telling Obama that they'd run out of capsules?

What I'm seeing is that we should have a "prophecy-off" like Elijah had with the priests of Baal. The one who can bring down fire from the Lord on the other party wins.

Scientists, being able to monitor volcanoes and storms, should be able to predict more accurately where fire will come down from the Lord.

Here's a list of the people God murdered in a misguided effort to get us to reduce government spending. He's a small government serial killer:

CONNECTICUT:

• 89-year-old Charlotte Levine - fire.

• 46-year-old Shane Seaver - drowned

FLORIDA:

• 55-year-old Frederick Fernandez - head wound

• 55-year-old James Palmer - drowned

MARYLAND:

• 85-year-old Anne Bell - crushed

NEW JERSEY:

• Celena Sylvestri, 20 - drowned

NEW YORK

• A man in his 50s - electrocuted

• unidentified woman - drowned

• 68-year-old Joseph Rocco - drowned

• unidentified man - drowned.

NORTH CAROLINA:

• unidentified man - struck by tree limb.

• 15-year-old girl - car crash.

• unidentified man - crushed by tree.

• unidentified man - car crash.

• mother - crushed by tree

• Melton Robinson, Jr. - drowned

PENNSYLVANIA:

• Michael Scerarko - crushed by tree.

• A 58-year-old Harrisburg man - crushed by tree.

• unidentifed man - crushed by tree

• motorist - car crash.

• 64-year-old Patricia O'Neill - drowned

VIRGINIA:

• 11-year-old Zahir Robinson - crushed by tree.

• 67-year-old James Blackwell - crushed by tree.

• unidentifed man - crushed by tree.

• 57-year-old William P. Washington - crushed by tree

Not a particularly funny joke.

55 Sol Berdinowitz  Mon, Aug 29, 2011 9:59:44am

Underlying it all is a belief in a God who micromanages the world and intervenes in daily life.

That also means that he would not rely on an impersonal mechanism like Evolution to create species, he would have to intervene personally to create the species.

I believe that only a minority of people who actually believe in God have this narrow, intervenistic view of his functioning, and whose who do not believe in God, well...

It's only the start of hurricane season.

I think you're right about that. Though, I would say that can be one result of general social/cultural conservative self-loathing. There are those who feel so insignificant and worthless, it's a comfort to believe that The One Who Made Everything and Everybody™ somehow also cares about what happens every minute of their miserable lives.

Delusional.

Some folks are stupid and did stupid things - like windsurfing after the hurricane or attempting to drive through flooded roads.

But many others who died in and after the storm were doing things that were common and ordinary - trying to clear debris after the storm (tree branch struck and killed one person in NJ), attempting to clear a basement of flooded water (heart attack), or a good samaritan who died saving a kid who was near downed lines and was electrocuted.

I wouldn't consider that to be a Darwin type death; tree branches could kill someone in their own home (and at least one such incident did occur during this storm), let alone a camper at a campground. Now, if the guy was standing on the tree limb when the tree came down in a hurricane, now that rises to Darwin levels.

New poll...against all other industries, the gov't comes in last.

Poll: Only 17 percent hold positive view of federal government

Americans have a more favorable view of every other industry — including oil and gas — than of the federal government, according to a new poll released Monday.

Only 17 percent of Americans surveyed have a positive view of the federal government.

According to Gallup, this is the first time the federal government has ranked at the bottom of a list of industries, displacing even the oil-and-gas industry, which came in second to last this year.

I think you have stumbled onto something important. If God is pissed about Pluto, well Pluto was downgraded nearly exactly five years ago (Aug, 2006). Since even God cannot work faster than the speed of light, that means that God lives 5 light years away or around alpha Centauri B.

Man fatally shot in front of son in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- A father was gunned down in Oakland right in front of his six-year-old son. It's just part of a string of deadly violence in East Oakland. Sunday's afternoon's shooting happened on International Boulevard and 103rd Avenue.

Family members say the boy can't stop talking about the shooting. They say he was in the car when his father was shot only a few feet away.

Jose Esparza had just cashed his check and bought a few items at the grocery store when two men approached him. His relatives say, according to witnesses, the two men tried to rob Esparza, but he resisted...

This is Oakland's 78th homicide of the year. Last year at this time, there were 59 homicides. Family members say they're surprised this happened in the middle of the day, but while they're concerned about the safety of their neighborhood, their bigger concern is for the little boy who witnessed his father's death...

I think we should start rating nutburger pronouncements on a 1 to 10 scale. After all, this has reached a phenomenal, unheard of level of refinement and creativity and the creators deserve to have their work quantified.
I think this one deserves a 9.1 at least. It is somewhat original, since Bachmann passed on the moth-eaten Sodom and Gomorrah blame-the-gays meme.
It also rates for conviction and audacity, since the speaker manages to couch it in terms of a disaffected electorate not only sharing her dubious view but demanding action. Finally, it must lose a few tenths for the shameful backtracking, though this does nothing substantial to reduce the rich aroma of prime nutcake aging in the public sphere.

253 lawhawk  Mon, Aug 29, 2011 11:52:00am

We've got more insanity from Bachmann. She stopped in FL when she had to remake travel plans due to Irene. So, she visited Cuban expats (as every politician is want to do when courting the large Cuban population in South Florida), but then said something that I think borders on the insane.

She would consider drilling for oil in the Everglades.

On Sunday in Sarasota, Bachmann said she would consider oil and natural gas drilling in the Everglades if it can be done without harming the environment.Hurricane Irene bypassed the state and spared Michele Bachmann’s first campaign foray in Florida this weekend, but now she has to contend with Hurricane Perry.

Even as the Minnesota congresswoman and presidential candidate courted big crowds as part of a four-day campaign swing through the state, she faces a serious Florida challenge from Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

First of all, she must convince voters she’s preferable to a proven, small-government conservative who shares her evangelical bona fides — but also has executive experience.

On top of that, she faces a Perry campaign already building a formidable Florida organization, while Bachmann’s is barely getting started.

Read more: [Link: www.miamiherald.com...]

For starters, the Everglades is a National Park. No drilling would happen there. Even if she means the unprotected portions, that would potentially lead to environmental damage that not even the sugar producers would entertain or allow.

I consider this pandering of the first order, and she'll say anything to try and get a vote no matter how stupid or insane it may be.

So what's next? You want to cut USGS from monitoring earthquakes world wide? NOAA and USGS both provide the most overall complete sources of weather and seismic monitoring services on the planet. Apparently those of you that are not educated enough to know that the global network of monitoring stations provide the raw data freely to the private weather services and they develop their own models taken directly from this data. No commercial enterprise could afford nor compete to replace these stations. NOAA, USGS, and NASA are actually 3 government agencies that are worth the money we spend on them.

McCain, who went from his claims that illegal immigrants come to America to cause accidents on our freeways to claiming that they come to America to start wild fires, is of course refusing to apologize after two 'legal' Americans were arrested.

McCain’s office has told the press he won’t apologize and say his earlier remarks were not specific to this fire but merely that perhaps illegal immigrants cause fires.

In June 2011, Arizona Senator John McCain inappropriately blamed the Arizona fire blazes on “illegal” immigrants, and he has failed to apologize even though there was no factual evidence the fires were started by immigrants. New information has come full circle where we learnt two “legal” Arizona citizens face federal charges

329 Talking Point Detective  Mon, Aug 29, 2011 1:06:33pm

Here's something interesting for those who follow the climate debate.

Often times, "skeptics" talk about how one piece of evidence of "fraud" among climate scientists is that their posts get cut from some sites like Real Climate. They offer up a site like What's Up With That as evidence of how "skeptics" are open to debate from those that disagree with them.

Well I just had an interesting exchange with Anthony Watts - the blogger at WUWT, where he made a completely false accusation about me:

Note the policy page. Note there I state WUWT has a low tolerance level for people using taxpayer funded resources to spout snark from the comfort of anonymity. – Anthony

Check out Anthony's meltdown, here:

[Link: wattsupwiththat.com...]

Now Anthony drew a conclusion, with no evidence (he concluded from my email address that I was posting, or that I have ever posted, while being paid for my work at an academic institution), and made a false accusation as a result. When I pointed out his error, by stating that he had made a false accusation, and that his definition of "coward," (he had earlier called me a coward because I post anonymously) was rather peculiar - as making false accusations without evidence seems pretty cowardly to me - he wouldn't post the response, and apparently I've been banned.

Now what is more "cowardly" than making a false accusation on his blog and then not allowing for a response?

And btw - he snipped a comment of mine because I posted about Bachmann's statement about Irene being a message from god.

He clipped it because he said my post was

[snip - Way off topic - politics not media - Anthony

Now please note, that was very shortly after the following comment was perfectly acceptable to Anthony.

It’s the aftermath that is more amusing. Obama still thinks Irene is a threat even though it’s not a hurricane any longer and storms do not have a reverse gear.

When I asked him why it's "off topic" and "politics not media" to point out Bachmann's comment, but not to post a comment about Obama, he responded thusly:

Because your comment was not only offtopic, but intended to threadjack, and no matter who was saying it “was a message from God” I’d delete it because we have a policy on the issue, along with discussing HAARP, bigfoot, UFO’s and other such garbage. Get over it. -Anthony

Now notice that the topic of the thread was related to "overhyping" of Irene by the media.

Apparently, reporters in raincoats is overhyping, that is "on topic," but saying that Irene was a message from god is "off topic" overhyping.

Maybe some of you folks would like to pay Anthony a visit?

Hey - plagiarism by an academic publishing a paper ain't that important. What's important is whether someone who posts comments on a blog uses their real name. It's the mark of whether or not they're a coward.

Because as we all know, we've never seen people who are non-anonymous make irresponsible comments. You know, like that Irene was a message from god.

Good afternoon folks.

So I'm reading this and I'd like to put this out there that part of the reason I tend to be dickish about religion is that I honestly do not believe that "good things come back to those that do them."

I tend to ride the line between "no good deed goes unrewarded" and "no good deed goes unpunished", but I still attempt to do the good deed when I can. Even if "good" doesn't come to me for it, at least I've put my own "good" out there.

He has a large following in the blogosphere. He is a major player in the "denial-o-sphere." You may deem him irrelevant, but in reality he has a fair amount of influence in the climate debate.

Romney spins....
Romney: Beachfront home is being doubled in size, not quadrupled

Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney pushed back against reports that he was quadrupling the size of his San Diego-area beachfront mansion, telling the New Hampshire Union Leader that he was only doubling the living space.

According to Romney, he plans to add a second floor to the house. The reported "quadrupling" figure accounts for building additional "nonliving" space, including a basement and garage.

There is no karma where good done now is rewarded in kind at a later date, but in a situation where others observe the good, they can and will alter their attitude and interaction towards the 'do-gooder' positively.

I disagree, buddy. Even without religion, people who do good things tend to be rewarded with in-kind goodness.

Do do-gooders get mugged and stabbed and shot and their entrails ripped out? Sure.

But the do-gooders that I know are generally happier types of folks.

My two cents.

Just rickroll him constantly with the video here :P

Or spam him with this link:

Willard Anthony Watts (Anthony Watts) is a blogger, weathercaster and non-scientist AGW denier who runs the website wattsupwiththat.com. He does not have a university qualification and has no climate credentials other than being a radio weather announcer.

Then again, for modern right-wingers, that's a feature, not a bug :/

From what I've learned over the course of my lifetime, the philosophy that seems to work the most is "don't get caught." And/or that the definition of "good" is...subjective.

The definition of 'good' is malleable and subjective, but each localized pocket of a culture generally agrees with a definition. You will likely have a definition based on what you were taught, or if lucky, developed as an adult. Doing good by those definitions will make you feel better about yourself and you'll get a positive response from others.

'Don't get caught' is overly cynical.

Now what is more "cowardly" than making a false accusation on his blog and then not allowing for a response?

Lol how else are they going to win unless they lie about you, and cheat to make themselves look either victimized (he's posting using taxpayer resources, boo hoo!!), or like you're the one with the problem? On a smaller scale, I had one try and pull some shyt like that the other day in comments.

Fundamentally dishonest people. And yeah, fundamentally cowardly.

Yes, shit happens. I grew up as an abused child, my wife grew up as an abused second class pariah because of her ancestry, but both of us had to make a decision - be bitter and hateful, or say fuckit and do what we can for our family, ourselves and even others.

That was definitely the case when my father was still alive. Some of the church people he was in contact with are quite vicious (New Apostolic Reformation adherents.)

They don't scare me, but the concern was for him, since I could not be there to protect him from them.

True, and sometimes, doing for others helps put one's own spot in perspective. One learns you're not alone, that there are people in similar situations.

The "holier than thou" approach has a limited appeal. Basically, it appeals to the "holier than thou" crowd. I keep telling people that republicans should stop lecturing about family values, religious principles and morals. They're not very good at "walking the walk."

Yeah, some days, I really had to put on my "Religious Studies Grad Student" hat when dealing with them. That did help, as in the times I would have to explain to skilled nursing staff, yeah the talk about demons, apocalyptic ends of the world (he had a psychotic episode where he would not go to a critical appointment, refusing to leave the room because the antichrist was outside; wouldn't "let" me leave, either ) and travel to other locales while "in the spirit" is not just dementia. He's been talking that way for about half his adult life. :/

It's hard to advocate for someone so vulnerable, yet with such venal, self-harming ideas. But with the help of friends and a family member, I got through it. Thx for the kind words.

Not at all!

She's just using the same screwy logic that lets people make 'jokes' about Jews, Blacks, Handicapped, Gays, or whatever other mean spirited joke bigoted comment - that they later wonder what the big deal was because they were only 'joking'.

Note: I'm not saying that Bachmann is a bigot based on this particular joke, just that it's wrong to claim that *only* an atheist would say that is a fallacy.

I was joking, not!

No fundamentalist like Bachmann takes the Lord's name in vain as a joke, suggesting a god is concerned about national economics. Gays maybe, but not spending.

And I would add, she is not a bigot in this, she just believes that crap; after all her god told her to run for president.

Well, the "adherents" part is my term. But they do not scare me, because I scare them; their entire lifestyle revolves around devising various ways of suppressing folks like me.

And I'm a person who would harm no one...that in itself is quite threatening. I can't respect that.
