Ayep, that was my impression in recent weeks. The gaffes, the “deer-in-headlights” stare, and most definitely her relationship with Marcus. Her campaign’s slowly imploding as she fails to realize that stunts like this give people a very bad first impression. Coming behind and saying “Oh, it was just a joke!” doesn’t matter to people who’ve already turned off their TV.

I like to see these candidates blowing not only their own money, but the Tea Party’s money, on campaigns that are going nowhere. Less money to burn later down the line.

Hey..

Even people with a mail order poly science degree knows that..

Was God kidding when he created Michelle Bachmann?

11 Shiplord Kirel  Mon, Aug 29, 2011 3:54:06pm

She would not joke about this, it’s that simple. With her ORU academic background and life-long fundamentalism, Bachmann quite literally lives in a different world. To her, as to other fundy supernaturalists, there is nothing odd or crazy about the idea of God routinely intervening in daily events, let alone the natural world.
It works the other way, too. Many of these people believe there are demons swarming around us all the time, waiting for some opportunity to do us a bad turn. I’ve mentioned the fundy I knew who would ascribe red light running and other reckless driving to demons trying to kill him rather than to dumbasses not paying attention. This is by no means unusual.

Rick Perry is wholly repugnant. A condescending liar that becomes offended when his own words are brought up.

“Read the book, get it right.”

How ‘bout fuck you, you smug preachy prick?

I hate his voice.

I hate his drawl.

I hate his hair.

I hate everything about him. Even his photo with a puppy.

Can’t stand him. And he’d make a disastrous president.

Bachmann’s running for second place. With luck, she’ll be tapped as VP to double up on God. A Palin reboot.

15 makeitstop  Mon, Aug 29, 2011 3:55:49pm

Michele Bachmann’s God is a vengeful, petty, punishing God. I want no part of that God.

And she was not joking, IMO. I think she really believes that God told her to run for president, and that God made an earthquake and a hurricane and killed people in order to justify the Republican view on government spending.

She’s only pulling the Limbaugh defense because people actually paid attention to her yammering this time. What about all the other times you invoked God, Michele? Joking then, or lying now?

The modern fundamentalist worldview has a lot in common with supernatural horror fiction. The latter in turn is really a sub-genre, an outgrowth, of the Romantic tradition in literature, however debased some recent examples may be in comparison to, say, Poe or Shelley. I wonder if fundamentalist supernaturalism is similarly a debased outgrowth of Romantic fantasy, with the trappings but none of the substance of traditional Christian theology. We can bring this process full circle, too, and examine the extent to which modern horror fiction is rooted in medieval Christian ideas of demonology and damnation.

Americans And Their Discontent: A Timeline of Government Mistrust

Public hostility toward government has reached intense levels these days, according to a new survey from the Pew Research Center. Email purges, withheld documents shroud Governor’s Office from scrutiny

When then-Gov. George W. Bush ran for president in 2000, his office released a treasure trove of information relating to his years as Texas’ chief executive.

Some 3,125 pages detailing Bush’s appointments during 1995-1998 allowed news organizations to remark on the exact number of lobbyists and campaign donors with whom he met. The records showed which state lawmakers Bush conferred with – and on what subject – and detailed how much time he spent reviewing capital punishment cases prior to executions. The records showed when he arrived at the office, when he took time off for the gym and when he went home.

In short, the documents provided a portrait of the leadership style of a candidate for president of the United States.

Now, as Gov. Rick Perry embarks on a presidential campaign, it is unlikely the public will access records that provide many revealing details about his decade-long tenure as governor. While Perry extols open government – most recently challenging Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke to “open the books” of the nation’s central bank – he has adopted policies that shroud his own office in a purposeful opaqueness that confounds prying reporters – or any member of the public questioning his policies.

Continues.

My TV rule generally is “the TV is used to stream Top Gear, watch Japanese horror movies and play XBox games”

That’s far more productive use of the device. Less of a waste of electrons.

For the most part news breaks right here with better links. Twitter or whatever. Quite often the TV news is already old news after lurking here. And the Lizards have a better take on the news than the news readers do anyway.

Socon bedwetters…cripes.

The Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) is a much more fundamentalist and conservative group than the other major Lutheran denominations, the Missouri Synod and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). WELS is overtly creationist, for example, and also refuses to renounce its long-held stance that the Pope is the Antichrist. It is also the smallest of the three groups.

Most liberals I know, and most centrists for that matter, are concerned first and foremost with their families, and don’t give a shit what conservatives do, as long as the conservatives stay the fuck out of everyone’s bedrooms, doctor’s offices, businesses and HR departments. They also want, pity the fools, for everyone to be treated equally, as in given equal opportunity to do well, based on who they are not what group they belong to. I find it says a lot about your type of conservatives that they want to ascribe value to people based on skin colour, ethnicity, religion, sexual preference and how often they read the Bible. They want a meritocracy, as long as white, English speaking, non-elitist, males don’t have to actually do anything to merit, … well, merit.

In creationism news today, the California Science Center was shaken down by the IDiots to a tune of $110,000:

CA science center pays $110,000 over canceled film

A documentary on intelligent design, a theory of creation that has been dismissed by some in the scientific community as comparable to claiming the South won the Civil War, can be shown at the California Science Center under terms of a settlement announced Monday.

However, the group that sued the center after a scheduled screening was canceled in 2009 now says it won’t bother to show the film “Darwin’s Dilemma: The Mystery of the Cambrian Fossil Record,” at the center’s IMAX theater or host a debate on evolution versus intelligent design afterward, as it had originally planned.

Instead, the American Freedom Alliance said it will move on after taking the $110,000 to be provided by the center foundation and its insurer under the settlement.

Under terms of the settlement, reached last month, neither side admitted wrongdoing and the alliance agreed to decline the center’s invitation to screen the film.

That’s an issue that may arise again during the 2012 presidential campaign. Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who recently announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination, discussed the issue during a visit to South Carolina last month, weighing in in favor of intelligent design.

“There are clear indications from our people who have amazing intellectual capability that this didn’t happen by accident,” he said.

“Darwin’s Dilemma” examines Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, raising questions about its validity in light of the Cambrian Explosion, which marked the sudden appearance of several major animal groups in fossils during a period 545 million years ago.

Paleontologist Steven Newton of the National Center for Science Education, who has viewed the film, said it has been overwhelmingly dismissed by the scientific community.

“It’s a distortion of what real scientists think about the Cambrian Period,” he said. “The way the film does this is by showing snippets of real paleontologists next to people who have never published a paper on paleontology talking about creationism.”

He compared its accuracy to that of a film about the Civil War that would conclude the South had won.

“That’s how far out there it is,” he said.

The American Freedom Alliance, which states its mission as promoting, defending and upholding Western values and ideals, rented the science center’s theater in 2009 to show the film and host a debate afterward as part of a fundraiser.

The center canceled the contract after it learned a third party, the Discovery Center, which supports intelligent design, was promoting the event in violation of the center’s contract with the alliance. What’s more, according to the science center, both groups were making an effort to drum up controversy about the program.

“The cancellation was never about the content of the program, as indicated by the fact that the foundation was willing to have the event in the first place. It was about the false and misleading press releases that the Discovery Institute and AFA issued,” the science center said in a statement Monday.

The center said it agreed to settle the lawsuit only to avoid the cost of further litigation.

Being a white conservative English speaking male IS the merit. Some merit points given for being one of their dhimmi admirers.

Quick correction: Catholics don’t consider the pope infallible. His teachings are infallible in the sense that he has the final say over what is and what isn’t part of Catholic doctrine, but not in the sense that those teachings can’t be wrong. Common misunderstanding due to some rather odd, ancient wording.

Fortunately we have the Third Amendment to keep the libs from forcing us to provide room and board for the ACORN militia when they’re mobilized to seize our guns. Btw, did y’all know these flash mobs attacks are just rehearsals for that mobilization?

BTW, the list was “leaked”, supposedly, of the “stars” for the next season of DWTS. I don’t recognize any of them other than Ryan O’Neal (who, if the rumor is accurate, would be the most accomplished of the bunch.) Most appear to be part of the reality-TV/gossip circuit.

didn’t see it in the pages, and just got here, but has there been any talk on Cheney’s insanely evil neew book?

The one where he says we should still be waterboarding and shits on the few smart people in the Bush2 admin?

Cheney is such a weasel. Powell went to bat for the administration by going to the United Nations and making a presentation on WMDs based on false intelligence. Almost destroying Powell’s reputation for good. Back stabber.

Being loyal to Republicans is a fool’s errand. The way they treat Condi, Colin, so many others…why bother.

And she entertains a very fucked up view of who the American people are.

The ferry I took from Brindisi, Italy to Greece paused at Corfu, so I saw how beautiful it is, but I did not set foot on it.

Charles,

Please, don’t sink to the same low level of Huffington Post by using the services of HULU. It might be OK for your US viewers but the rest of the world LOATHES HULU!! It’s impossible to watch it outside the US controlled area of the internet. I feel really let down by this. At least post an international link besides it if you can.

261 William of Orange  Tue, Aug 30, 2011 3:16:25am

Speaking about Bachmann.

I would have posted a Youtube link here from one of her speeches but since posting the link on an other forum, the clip has been switched to “private” by the original poster. but this is what Bachmann said:

Bachmann: Who likes white people?
Crowd: (Cheers)Bachmann: Yeah! That’s right! I’m Michelle Bachmann and I’m a member of congress and I’m running for the presidency of the United States….

Edit:
Someone else grabbed it before it was pulled. So for all of you to see…

Don’t bother watching the part after 13 seconds. That’s just your basic religious propaganda.

Political Hotwire writes: “Apparently, the warm-up band for Bachmann was called the ‘White People Soul Band’…’it is obvious to me that whan she asked ‘Who likes white people?’, she meant the band, but even from the reaction of the audience, you can hear a not so subtle undertone. Either way, it is extremely awkward and probably not the smartest thing to do when you know your opponent in the GE will be a black man.”

That’s still a questionabe name for a music group.

re: #127 Dewd

I would lke to thank wrenchwench for that lovely introduction but just to clarify I am a woman (just so you know). A conservative, athiest female. Does this make me a wingnut? Most conservatives I know spend their time working and taking care of their families. However most liberals I know are consumed with their neighbors activities. Are they recycling, using plastice bottles or trash bags, driving SUV’s, eating too musch meat or any meat at all or heaven forbid, keeping score at theirs little and soccer games. Oh the horror, Liberals then want more laws and regulations so people will modify their behavior the way it should be. The way way liberals say it should be because they know better. No religion has ever affected my personal life but liberals do every day.

I am so, so sorry that you are being oppressed by liberals. Have a martyr cookie. It’s made with no wheat, no dairy, and carob chips.

I got this from one of my FB friends:

There was a wonderful series of interviews with church leaders a few years back after a swath of hurricanes went through Honduras. All were asked ‘Why these terrible storms?’ The local evangelical church leader said, ‘God is punishing the people for their waywardness.’ The [RC? the quote says ‘Italian’] incumbent noted, ‘God is testing His people.’ The Episcopal Bishop (Leo Frade, now in Florida) said, ‘It’s hurricane season.’ “ -the Rev. Br. Tobias Haller
