Lord, the day is at hand. We are in the last days. You are a Jehovah God. We know that the times are in your hands. And we give them to you…The day is at hand, Lord, when your return will come nigh. Nothing is more important than bringing sheep into the fold. Than bringing new life into the kingdom…You have weeded that garden. The harvest is at hand.

She can run, but she can't hide.

Slate’s Dave Weigel has reported an audio recording of Bachmann praying for the notoriously anti-gay ministry You Can Run But You Can’t Hide, run by the radical preacher Bradlee Dean. Bachmann offered the prayer in 2006 (though the recording was uploaded in 2008). In it, Bachmann predicts, “We are in the last days,” and says, “The harvest is at hand” — a Biblical allusion to the Rapture when some believe God will take saved Christians from the earth and leave the non-believers to face several years of torment and tribulation before the second coming of Christ.

Sorry but anyone who legislates according to this belief is too incompetent for any kind of office except the church office.

Here is a bit of good news for all of you.

Ya gotta love medical science. One day, they tell you to avoid something because it promotes disease, then the next day tell you to indulge in it, because it actually fights a different disease. The overall message seems to be the same in every case: moderation.

The concept (and it certainly is a sticky one) is a hold over from the period of Hasmonean period religious groups, including those who would eventually morph into what we call "Christians" of that time.

Christianity has always been strongly apocalyptic, probably because it was founded on these ideas.

And, for those in Judea who were living in the area in the 1st century, "the end" did come, in 70AD.

However, in the succeeding 19 centuries many people have found it in their interests to pretend the apocalyptic language wasn't about the turmoil of that age (even though apparently Jesus explicitly told them it would all occur in his hearers' own lifetimes.)

Q: How do you tell if a person has never experienced a category 2, 3, 4, or 5 hurricane?

A: They prepare based upon local media/National Hurricane Center projections, and are disappointed when they miss the drama of the hurricane causing mass destruction of lives and property in their area.

re: #68 imp_62

I did not know that.

Assuming the Gospels are even somewhat accurate to what was originally said, Jesus said explicitly, when he was ranting apocalyptically, that those standing right there would be around to see the things of which he spoke.

Most Christians, especially those so caught up into "plain language" and "literal" interpretations, go through cartwheels trying to make the words mean something they don't.

Preterism is the name of the approach that looks on the apocalyptic language (of the Gospels, Revelation, Daniel) as having already taken place. It is both historically relevant and sticks with the meanings of the texts. However, historically, during many times of the last 19 centuries Christians have turned away from the preterist approach towards more fanciful ideas.

This is especially true of what happened at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th in the US, with the rise of the teachings of the Dispensationalists and the formation of those groups we today think of as the "fundamentalists" in American religion. They really grabbed onto a hard sell wrt Israel and Zionism (and were strong supporters of their interpretation of zionism), and they still do that.

It's a sad, sad story, all too familiar in human societies. Religions serve several purposes, including at times to help people escape the emotional burdens of their every day lives. Anyone who is smart knows how to turn that need into a profitable business, and many have made lots of profits from prophets.

Fred Clark at slacktivist talks about this quite a bit--how the Rapture theologians presume that prophecy in the text is never fulfilled in the text, it's all for this generation.

He talks a bit about the destruction of Jerusalem, and how that relates to the 'mini-apocalypse' in Matthew.

These issues have been around the block so many times in the past 20 centuries that if anyone actually takes the time to read a bit of history then it ought to become clear what is going on with American fundamentalists and their fervent devotions.

Christianity has always been strongly apocalyptic, probably because it was founded on these ideas.

And, for those in Judea who were living in the area in the 1st century, "the end" did come, in 70AD.

There was discussion in my Greek classes about the prevalence of Greek language and culture in Judea and surrounding area in 1AD/CE.
It was generally understood (even among the divinity students) that more than likely the historical Jesus spoke either Aramaic or Greek, even though he was trying to convert Jews to believe in ever lasting life.

Which led to the question. Was the 1st & 2nd Jewish rebellion an orthodox/fundamentalist attempt to stamp out inroads that [Greek] non-Hebrew language & culture had made into traditional Jewish culture, which in turn threatened the Pax Romana of Judea?

... more than likely the historical Jesus spoke either Aramaic or Greek, even though he was trying to convert Jews to believe in ever lasting life.

Hmmm... that seems unlikely, at least as far as I've read. Most NT scholars would accept that a Nazareth area resident in AD 30 would be quite aware of the extent of the Hellenization of the land of Judea, since Greek was the lingua franca of the elite, the Gospel stories tell of a Jesus and his disciples who were anything but "the elite". Their everyday language would have been Aramaic, and they probably could understand Hebrew as it was read to them.

Furthermore, even if some of them knew a few words of Koine (to get by in cases where they had to interact with gentiles), they would have been illiterate. In fact, the book of Acts clearly states that Peter and John were illiterate!

People who attempt to recreate the "historical" Jesus - though some think that a folly - from the surviving stories (i.e., the Gospels), even though the stories are from the latter part of the 1st century and thus 50 or 60 years after the events, and thus not written by eyewitnesses - what comes out in the wash is that Jesus was most definitely an apocalyptic Jew, not an ascetic as the Essenes were and not a militant as the "Fourth way" were. He was a "
the end is near - REPENT!" (to put the story in English idioms) prophet.

So, it really comes as no surprise that Michele Bachmann ends up being an end-timer, like millions and millions of others before her in the preceding 19 centuries.

Now, since the first century the Christian religion has been highly Hellenized and even Paganized and today can seem somewhat different from it's apocalyptic Jewish origins, but if one scrapes away the centuries of add-ons one gets to the Jewish roots.

However, Bachmann, Perry, and the rest really don't care about all of that. They don't want to hear how diverse "Christianity" was a century after Jesus, no more than they want to hear about how Genesis and Moses were just stories made up by religious sects in the first millenium BC Levant. The fundamentalists in this country today are on a tear - a reactionary fugue to a world that doesn't make sense to them.

The local evangelical church leader said, 'God is punishing the people for thei...r waywardness.' The [RC? the quote says 'Italian'] incumbent noted, 'God is testing His people.' The Episcopal Bishop (Leo Frade, now in Florida) said, 'It's hurricane season.' " -the Rev. Br. Tobias Haller

So...I rooted my droid last month and finally got around to re-setting up Tasker. One of the problems I was having was battery life so I set tasker up to turn off everything I don't need (wifi, gps, mobile data, sync) and turn on data & sync every 30 minutes for 2 minutes to check and then turn itself back off. I set it all up with an on/off widget which makes it handy. I also managed to get it to turn data back on when the screen comes on and it leaves it all on when it's plugged in to a power source. I ran some tests the last couple of days and it's saving me about 15% battery life every 5 hours. Not bad!

Greener than cremation: Liquification:

The system works by submerging the body in a solution of water and potassium hydroxide which is pressurised to 10 atmospheres and heated to 180C for between two-and-a-half and three hours.

Body tissue is dissolved and the liquid poured into the municipal water system. Mr Sullivan, a biochemist by training, says tests have proven the effluent is sterile and contains no DNA, and poses no environmental risk.

The bones are then removed from the unit and processed in a "cremulator", the same machine that is used to crush bone fragments following cremation into ash. Metals including mercury and artificial joints and implants are safely recovered.

Seems to be a phase he goes thru every few weeks.

The good news about them cutting down the trees along my street is that they're only using a crew of 8 guys and 3 trucks so they're only able to take down one tree a day.

I finally asked why they were removing the trees. They're putting in new sidewalks on my block. I'd rather have the trees. The sidewalks and curbs are old but they were still in pretty good shape. If they were worried about the roots bulging up the sidewalks I wonder why they just didn't cut the root out of the way instead of taking out the whole tree.

I don't now which is worse about LaRoucheites, their anti-semitic, whackjob views or the total smugness with which they deliver them.

They pioneered the whack-job science schtick. They'd spin a fantastic story about a new source of energy that was being held off the market by the establishment, even though it had all been worked out by---get this---Bernhard Riemann.

A 19th century German mathematician.

The schtick works, much of the time. What is the slightly skeptical reader to do? Look up Riemann and read his German work on the zeros of the zeta function?

The more skeptical reader figures it out: neither has any LaRoucher. It's just smoke.

The roots would regrow, or they wouldn't. If they do, the sidewalk suffers. If they don't, the tree is likely to die and then you have to take it out anyway.

They almost have to, since media personalities like Beck and Limbaugh have made Obama into a devil figure. Also, the so-called "Bubba vote" has to find some policy reason to hate Obama, since they can't come out and say "We hate him because he's black!" (except of course for their anonymous posts on Fox Nation and Yahoo).

That having been said, this bill is just for show. It's chances of passing the Senate, even if the GOP controlled that chamber, would be nil. however, the ideas in the bill of reforming the UN's funding formula and forcing changes in the UN's peacekeeping operations have merit. But trying to use our budget contributions to simply make the UN into a puppet is an extremely bad idea, that would only end with the USA looking like a bunch of asshole imperialists.

It reflects the social reality of America: People are more likely to see black people as criminals. So while a young white couple taking something from an abandoned grocery is seen as 'retrieval', when a young black man does it it's 'looting'.

So far, haven't seen reports of that ilk in the Irene coverage, and we've got extensive flooding around here that will last through the week - and some places upstate in NY and VT are even harder hit - completely wiped out by flash floods, but don't get the kind of coverage that a downstate flood would get because not as many people affected, but hundreds of bridges are out, several major highways are still shuttered, and there's no ETA on when they will reopen.

306 lawhawk  Tue, Aug 30, 2011 7:41:32am

re: #302 thedopefishlives

There is an argument to be made that some of the first responder funding after 9/11 was not necessary - enabling communities that had little risk of being a terror target to buy shiny new equipment that they would have little need of ever using, even as major metro areas still didn't get sufficient funding for their equipment needs (think NYC, Chicago, LA, Miami, DC, etc.).

Except that it was a question of where the funding went, not that the overall funding level was insufficient. Congress created a funding formula to give funds to all states, with additional amounts to key locales, but it was a guarantee that some places would get money that had no reason to see it. Political expediency meant that to secure funding for the whole package, some areas that had no risk were to partake in the funds while other areas would get shortchanged.

But find me any Congress critter who would shortchange their own district on those funds. I doubt that you'd find any - even Cantor.

He's full of [deleted].

"I don't think that it damaged our reputation around the world," Cheney said of Iraq. "I just don't believe that. I think critics here at home would argue that."

No, I'd say Eric Cantor is being very "Line-of-Sight Oriented", to use a term I created last year. In Cantor's case, it means that he is entirely focused on delivering the promised numbers for the budget cuts. He does not believe his party base will accept any excuse, so he is being dogmatic. The best way to change it would be to get a major Tea Party group to agree that some cuts should be set aside for a year in order to fund hurricane relief. That would give Cantor some flexibility.

Wikileaks leaks more US diplomatic cables, refusing to redact the names of people with whom those US diplomats talked with. This is a huge problem, since the lives of those people could be in danger from reprisals.

A sampling of the documents showed that the newly published cables included the names of some people who had spoken confidentially to American diplomats and whose identities were marked in the cables with the warning “strictly protect.”

State Department officials and human rights activists have been concerned that such diplomatic sources, including activists, journalists and academics in authoritarian countries, could face reprisals, including dismissal from their jobs, prosecution or violence.

Most of the House leadership from both parties comes from safe districts. They're the ones who stay in Congress long enough to ascend to leadership spots. The Congresspeople in swing districts rarely last more than 4-5 terms before they are voted out when the district swings back the other way.

Yeah I am aware of that. When you see leadership lose their seat, it's because of a wave e.g. Tom Foley in 1994. Now for what it's worth it's surprised me that the last two Democratic leaders in the Senate- Reid and Tom Daschle before him came from competitive states. but the Senate is a different animal.

I don't actually believe black people are born criminals. But in crisis situations emotions can overwhelm reason and fears that in calmer times one keeps suppressed (Because I know they are wrong and irrational) can come to the fore. I was trying to be honest about how I react to things. I try very hard to tell the truth as best as I know it. Maybe I'd surprise myself and do better than I think I would, but I'm not going to use than as a working assumption.

Can't you see a situation where you might react in fashion that in calmer times you would know wasn't the best reaction?

The problem I have with some of our foreign policy endeavors especially in the Cold War was that we seemed to care more about a person being anti-communist than being pro-democracy and despite what rabid anti communists may say, the two are not always comparable. The Shah of Iran, Guatemala, and of course Pinochet in Chile. And then there are those who take any criticism of our past doings in history classes as somehow attacking America. If you ask me, it's good to learn from mistakes so we don't make them again rather than act like America fuck yeah to steal a phrase from Team America World Police.

The roots would regrow, or they wouldn't. If they do, the sidewalk suffers. If they don't, the tree is likely to die and then you have to take it out anyway.

The sidewalks are at least 30 years old. There are some bumps in the concrete where the roots have pushed them up so they do have a point...but I'd rather keep the old sidewalks with the trees. New modern sidewalks and curbs are going to stand out in an old neighborhood like this. BTW, I'm not a big fan of trees in general so it's kind of a weird feeling for me rooting for more of them.

I normally agree with you, but not about DF. He's pretty hard on himself. Sometimes he says stuff that shocks me about himself. I have to believe there is a better way to convert people than by beating up on them.
I don't think he's an average con and don't think he deserves to be beat on. Well, maybe sometimes, but not much. He really does think about points that are made here.
I value his honesty too. He admits to things which I think most people wouldn't admit to.

Basically, for every DF saying these things in this way, there's a thousand unregenerate cons who think like that and don't see anything wrong with it.

I'll probably piss him off by saying this, but I really think of DF as being on step one of the 12 steps to rejecting conservatism: he admits there is a problem and announces that he's helpless in the face of it.

Christine O'Donnell is simply the crowning glory of everything wrong with extremist conservatism. It is a glimmer of hope that wingnuts are wising up to these unelectable candidates but keep in mind that it's a Palin event. Sharron Angle spoke at a Tea Party event last week. Rick Perry, Michelle Bachmann are still popular candidates. Paul Ryan and Eric Cantor are alienating voters will nutty and reckless legislation.

What kind of trees are they?

Some of the fast growing species including some kinds of maple favored for shading streets need to be taken out after a period of time like thirty years. They start dying and rotting from the core out and become a danger in terms of falling over and/or dropping limbs. I've also seen utilities take out trees because otherwise they have to constantly deal with trimming them to keep them clear of the power and utility lines.

re: #399 oaktree

Some towns are changing the rules for placement of trees along rights of way to reduce possible storm damage, and sidewalk replacements are now taking potential storm damage into account - you can't just cut out roots on one side and expect the tree to last during major storms.

Meanwhile, whoever planned to cut down trees along Route 208 in Fair Lawn 2-3 weeks ago looks like a genius right now. The route used to have a bunch of old growth trees hanging down over the road, which is used as a bypass for major traffic heading to I 287 from Route 4/17. They pruned them back severely so that they didn't overhang the road. I don't think there were significant closures on 208. That was the exception rather than the rule, as DOT/towns/NJ Transit have cut back on funds to do that kind of work - leaving the potential for disruptions during storm events.

A nice mix of oak and, I think, maple. The utility lines run behind the houses so there isn't a chance of falling branches taking them out. The street dept guys said they're being removed so they can put in new sidewalks. That's nice, I appreciate the improvements, but I liked driving down my in-town street through what looked like a tree tunnel. It's pretty and I like pretty!

US 'wasted $30bn on Afghanistan and Iraq' over decade

The US government has wasted $30bn (£18bn) in contracts in Afghanistan and Iraq over the last decade, according to a bi-partisan spending commission.

The commission on wartime contracting blamed an over-reliance on contractors, poor planning and fraud for the waste.

It had evidence of lax accountability and inadequate competition, it said...

The Mrs. Fish and I went to Ireland for our honeymoon. I was actually impressed with how much I was able to understand, even out in the far countryside. What's even more amusing is that when we got back, we went down to the local Irish pub for a dinner date. After we were waited on, we informed our waiter that his (genuine) accent didn't sound Irish, and inquired as to where he was from. He beamed at us and proudly informed us that he was from Glasgow, and was curious how we were able to tell the difference.

I was in Athens, Georgia in 1990 or so and had two men walk by me on the street having a conversation. It was entirely in slang/street talk with a southern accent added on. Could not understand any of it beyond picking up a few words to indicate that the base language was English.

I still think Churchill said it best about Americans and the British that they are two people separated by a common language. The other neat thing for me as an English minor is seeing how different dialects are used in literature. I remember a Skakespeare play I read that heavily exagerrated a Welsh character's accent, an accent to an average American probably sounds like an English one but to the British ear is much like our own dialects within regions.

re: #417 iceweasel

ok, I missed that.

I'll explain, Ice.

WindUpBird made a remark that "Illinois Republicans would suck Klansmen's cocks to get their troughs filled" (his actual words). At the time, he meant that to apply to all active Republican office holders firstly, and then to GOP party members. As a member of my extended family is a Republican office holder in Illinois, several members of my family do contribute to the GOP, and my father and I actively attend local party events, I took his comment as an insult towards me and my family. The rift started when he refused to apologize for that remark. Last week, WUB rephrased his remark in such a way as to confine his attack to the party in general, and allowing that his words did not apply to all persons within the party. That ended the rift, as he had made clear these revised remarks were not intended to insult me or my family.

Regarding the Irish and the Irish accent, I think there's a perception among many that every Irish accent sounds the same but there's diversity in that accent too. The Irish accent on the man who taught the literature portion of the course was an unique Irish-American accent as he was an American native who had been teaching in Ireland sometime. Apparently, my cousin who's lived in Wales the past 15 years has adapted something similar and her daughters speak an unique Welsh American accent. Then there was the man who taught the theatre portion of the course who had more less your stereotypical excitable Irish accent that you see in the movies. And the guy who taught the history course I took was a Belfast native with a more what I'd call relaxed accent. Great instructors the whole lot of them. It was an experience that I really enjoyed.

Not entirely. He really was in a bad mood and wanted to "slap-the-conservative" verbally. And then I wanted him to grovel and admit he was wrong, because I felt very insulted.

The actual turning point was when he Paged an article written by a man who as a boy had been cruelly abused during anti-gay "reparative therapy". I replied to the post he used to link to that page with "could you please apologize, so I can give this page the upding it so richly deserves." It was then that he rephrased his remarks. I finally wanted to praise him badly enough to bury the hatchet and he proved willing to do so as well.

But that all changed in the early hours Saturday when, according to Lafayette police, Braman fired a shot from a handgun into the air and a second shot into the ground during an argument with some men outside a bar.

Braman was later arrested, and the parade was canceled.

I read Henry V but I was actually thinking of the Parson Evans in The Merry Wives of Windsor which was also my favorite comedy that I read in the course. Liked it more than Taming of the Shrew, Midsummer Night's Dream, and Merchant of Venice. The character of Falstaff had a slapstick image to him. Was definitely a play I was shocked hadn't been reproduced on the big screen.

Ah! Yep, great comedy. It would be a good project for Branagh. Only thing I could find for it is a reference to a TV version:

Merry Wives

Made back in 82...pretty impressive cast. Wonder if it's on DVD.

Cool, would love to see that. The fun I had with Shakespeare was using a history major's mindset to approach the plays. Like when we read/saw Richard II and how his cousin Henry IV has him killed, it was hard not to think of of Mary Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I. My professor thought that was interesting since Elizabeth if I heard him right did think the play was subversive.

I'd like to hear more of the story. He's going to have to come up with a pretty good excuse to get out of firing 2 shots. BTW, in IN if you feel threatened you're allowed to shoot the person but not fire into the air/ground which seems a little weird.

I'd imagine because firing in the air can bring a bullet down indiscriminately and hit an unintended target. At least aiming at the person you feel is a threat makes sense.

True. There was a pacer player who got jumped outside a club years ago. Since he was attacked he had the right to shoot someone but fired into the air instead. He was charged but at least he didn't kill anyone.

It isn't ignorance, since I damn well know better! But when I'm in crisis mode I don't always have full control of my emotions. It's not an excuse, all it can be is an explanation.

I have problems with my emotions, and I do my best to fix them. However, were those problems to lead me to break the law, then those problems would not be a mitigating circumstance in my opinion. I would deserve to be punished for my misdeed. But that has not happened and I keep working to ensure that it does not happen. Meanwhile, I do my damnedest to treat everyone I deal with fairly, regardless of race, sex, religion, or sexual orientation.

With an added twist: Fischer's the kind who'd like to answer a Stonewall Riot not with NYPD riot squads and non-lethal crowd control measures, but with his own "counter-protest" of armed fundie brownshirts. During which, of course his "Good Christians" would be "attacked" by the "Depraved Homosexuals", with the resulting "actions in self defense" killing a large number of gay people. Byran Fischer's response to a loud gay protest would make Bull Conner happy, and his response to a gay riot would be equal parts Reginald Dyer and Adolf Hitler.

re: #104 freetoken

[...] Hmmm... that seems unlikely, at least as far as I've read. Most NT scholars would accept that a Nazareth area resident in AD 30 would be quite aware of the extent of the Hellenization of the land of Judea, since Greek was the lingua franca of the elite, the Gospel stories tell of a Jesus and his disciples who were anything but "the elite". Their everyday language would have been Aramaic, and they probably could understand Hebrew as it was read to them.[...]

Yea, more likely Aramaic, but as you were kind enough to point out, Jesus having a little knowledge of Greek (as it was spoken at that time) was not out of the question. As to whether or not, the "historical Jesus" understood Hebrew, it appears you are being a little pedantic.

[...]Furthermore, even if some of them knew a few words of Koine (to get by in cases where they had to interact with gentiles), they would have been illiterate. In fact, the book of Acts clearly states that Peter and John were illiterate![...]

1. Koine, a nice word for Greek [as it was spoken at that time]. So if we subsequently get into a discussion about 13 century BCE Greek, one of us has to be sure and mention Linear B. [g]

2. Peter and John were illiterate!

OK, but most folk of the day were illiterate, so what is your point?

The oral tradition had not yet passed out of common usage.

My point was. Could have the "extent of the Hellenization of the land of Judea" created enough unrest among the Jewish population, that the Romans were forced to conduct two separate military actions to preserve Pax Romana.

[...] People who attempt to recreate the "historical" Jesus - though some think that a folly [...]

Sorry, I was channeling Albert Schwitzer, and use the term historical Jesus to preclude any mythological nonsense surrounding the centerpiece of what was considered to be just another mystery religion for the first two centuries CE.

[...] thus 50 or 60 years after the events, and thus not written by eyewitnesses - what comes out in the wash is that Jesus was most definitely an apocalyptic Jew, not an ascetic as the Essenes were and not a militant as the "Fourth way" were. He was a "
the end is near - REPENT!" (to put the story in English idioms) prophet.[...]

Whatever Jesus's politics or philosophy, it apparently got him crucified.

Speaking of Jesus's philosophy, was he a [messianic] Nazarene, or did he really come from the city of Nazareth? The latter would have meant that his mother Mary would have had to endure a 20 KM or so walk or donkey ride while in her 9th month of pregnancy.

[...] Now, since the first century the Christian religion has been highly Hellenized and even Paganized and today can seem somewhat different from it's apocalyptic Jewish origins, but if one scrapes away the centuries of add-ons one gets to the Jewish roots.[...]

Thus my use of "historical Jesus."

[...] However, Bachmann, Perry, and the rest really don't care about all of that. They don't want to hear how diverse "Christianity" was a century after Jesus, no more than they want to hear about how Genesis and Moses were just stories made up by religious sects in the first millenium BC Levant. The fundamentalists in this country today are on a tear - a reactionary fugue to a world that doesn't make sense to them.[...]

I have no problem with those who believe in a literal interpretation of the bible, as long as their beliefs are based upon a literal translation of the bible.

Thanks for your response.
