Did Bill O’Reilly Pull Strings to Get His Wife’s Boyfriend Investigated?

Gawker breaks a potentially big story
Media • Views: 36,135

There’s a lot of buzz today about John Cook’s story at Gawker on Fox News host Bill O’Reilly; the story alleges that O’Reilly used his influence with a Long Island police department to get their internal affairs unit to investigate a cop O’Reilly suspected of messing around with his wife: How Bill O’Reilly Tried to Get His Wife’s Boyfriend Investigated By the Cops.

Fox News has responded, and we note that they did not deny the substance of the story:

“Gawker has been lying about Fox News for several years,” a Fox spokesperson told Adweek when reached for comment about the story. “We are not going to dignify this with any further comment.”

Part of me wants to blame her for even marrying a dirty SOB like O'Really, in the first place. The rest of us know better.

He specifically wanted to know the size of his enemies johnson, and whether he too likes falafel.

"So Harasym, the source says, refused the assignment. Several months later, he was transferred out of internal affairs. It's unclear whether the investigation was assigned to another detective."

Looks like the cops did the right thing. Nothing. 'Cause if that investigation was continuing it would be clear by now, most likely.

Preemptive strike!

“Fox & Friends” host Steve Doocy Friday morning repeated the traffic drop and said Gawker was once “mildly popular” in an interview with Breitbart.tv editor Larry O’Connor, who was quick to mention that Andrew Breitbart’s network of websites such as Big Journalism and Big Hollywood are doing fine despite Gawker’s apparent slide.

I'd rather see something more concrete than just a Gawker scoop. They don't have the best track record as being entirely Fact-Based... You know, just like Fox News.

Get this investigated by someone I'd trust more than a gossip rag, and I'll be crowing it from the rooftops. Someone like Steven Colbert. Until then, I'll hold off on the celebratory schnerking.

But it doesn't stop me from a schnerk in private. You all understand, I hope.

Roger Ailes Caught Spying on the Reporters at His Small-Town Newspaper

...After Lindsley quit for good, things got weirder. He was driving to a deli in Cold Spring for lunch earlier this month when he noticed a black Lincoln Navigator that seemed to be following him, according to several sources familiar with the incident. Lindsley drove aimlessly for a while to make sure he was being followed, and the Navigator stayed on him. Then he got a look at the driver, who was a News Corporation security staffer that Lindsley happened to know socially. Lindsley continued on his way and later called the driver to ask if he was following him. The answer was yes, at Ailes' direction.

Looks like the cops did the right thing. Nothing.

I don't think it would be wrong to have an IA investigation of a police officer involved in an affair with a married person. Especially someone married to an influential media person and living in the community where the officer works. At the least it indicates bad judgement and that alone reflects poorly on the department as a whole. And because of the media spotlight that would ensue (I'm looking at you, Gawker), it could lead to a corrosive effect on the relationship between community and police.

That might be true -- if the investigation had originated within the department. If it happened because Bill O'Reilly called some friends in the PD and got it going, that's a completely different story.

Sort of corrosive within your police department if you find out that some members of it got an IA investigation of another member triggered on the say-so of a local public figure.

I think the important question is: Would what this officer was doing automatically trigger an IA investigation if/when the department discovered the behavior. If so no problem, if not the department has much bigger problems.

I think you're only half right there. Its silly to say the investigation has to originate within the department. An anonymous tip or an irate spouse visiting the officer's boss could be a perfectly legitimate start to an investigation.

On the other hand, if the irate spouse offers a bribe to get the investigation started, then that is indeed a different story. That would be out and out corruption. Putting myself in O'Reilley's shoes, I might just march myself down to the police station also. If they don't act on what I tell them (get the officer to stop the affair or fire him), and I'm considering donating to a police foundation headed by someone up the chain of command, then I might just decide not to donate. I don't think that would be a corrupt or illegal or bad thing to do if, (and a big if) I don't first threaten to revoke the donation unless I get my way.

BOR (Bill O'Reilly): So, can you look into it for me?

PB (Police Bigwig): I'll have to see. We've got a lot going on. Anyway, how are you feeling about that massive donation you were going to send my way? Ready to sign the check yet? I hope this other business won't affect your decision either way.

BOR: I don't see why it should. After all, I make my charitable donation decisions entirely independently of whether people go out of their way to help me out.

PB: Good stuff. See you at the yacht club on Saturday!

Let's just say that from a standpoint of the cuckoldee getting a modicum of revenge in a legal way, the cop made himself a much easier target than the Walmart checker. Even more evidence the guy might not have the necessary judgement to carry a gun and a badge.

I disagree on several counts. First, consenting adults is the law. Second, IA is about cops breaking the law. We have zero reason to think a law was broken. Third, they were separated at the time. Fourth, OReilley was engaging in stalker behavior. Last, Police departments reputations are built on their law enforcement and community relations. Not the sex lives of consenting adults, officers or not.

California Superintendent Gives Up $830K In Wages To Help School Facing Budget Cuts

Tomorrow morning, a California school superintendent will retire from his job, only to be rehired later in the day. Why? Fresno County’s superintendent Larry Powell wants to be paid a much lower wage. Leaving behind a $288,241 annual salary, Powell will voluntarily work for $31,020 — $10,000 less than a first-year teacher’s salary — with no benefits. This, Powell says, ensures that the $830,000 he would have earned for the remainder of his term will go toward the county schools’ budget for the next three years.

So the question is: If Joe Kelly, ordinary citizen, called up and asked that a police officer be investigated for sleeping with Mrs. Kelly, would it happen?

Yeah, I am typing this with a straight face, but I'd better finish typing soon.

OT: The web page for my friend who got his guitars stolen is now live:
Stolen Guitars: Reward Offered. Please share on FB or anywhere else you may think it'll do some good. Thanks.

Paranoid doesn't begin to cover it. I think they have to come up with a new word.

What in the world. That's insane. Must be worth well into 5 figures. I Tweeted the page.

Yeah, about $50K. I'm usually not a fan of gratuitous violence, but in the case of the scum who stole those guitars I'd make an exception.

ETA: Thanks for Tweeting, Gus. I appreciate that.

Worst. Bond. Villain. Ever.

I dunno...I thought Jonathan Pryce chewed the screen up in his scenes. Sure, Carver was no Blofeld, "Jaws", or Max Zorin (to name a few Bond baddies), but I thought Pryce did a good job.

Pryce is a world-class actor.

re: #5 RadicalModerate

Surprisingly, Bill didn't use "FoxNews Security" for this investigation.

Of course he didn't. Why would he use private security, when he can use the police, which are funded by the taxpayers? At the same time, he's happy to go on TV and complain about people who use government services.

re: #43 gamark

You make a very good point that a spouse might be driven by emotions that are completely understandable (if not especially admirable). Still, keep in mind what O'Reilly wanted: for the police to become involved, in what was apparently a consensual affair. There are plenty of other people who might be very emotional (difficult things happen to all of us), but who wouldn't actually take concrete steps to get the POLICE involved in intimidating someone else. I would think that anyone who did what O'Reilly did with the police has got to have quite a bit of hate inside them. I'm sure we've all fantasized about hurting someone who has hurt us, but to actually approach the police, in what is really a personal matter, is quite a big step, and a very pathological step, in my opinion. The police are supposed to follow the law, NOT to take someone's side against someone else.
