The LV Sun is reporting 7 people shot at a Carson city IHOP, including the shooter, and it's expected that the shooter is going to die.
Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong says multiple people have been shot after a gunman opened fire at a restaurant.
Furlong tells The Associated Press the gunman opened fire inside an IHOP restaurant in Carson City at about 9 a.m. Tuesday.
He says multiple people were wounded, including the shooter. He says the person who authorities believe to be the shooter has been transported to a hospital "and is probably going to die."
Local and state police and FBI agents have descended on the scene on South Carson Street, also called U.S. 395, the main street in the state capital. Yellow tape surrounded the parking lot near a Kohl's department store in a shopping complex across the street from a casino and hotel.

The choppers were called at 0900 local time so the shooting occurred a few minutes before that, a little less than 2 hours ago. It's much too early to draw any conclusions about the shooter's identity or possible motives but that won't keep swarms of internet commenters from doing so.

My guess is it's related to some sort of dispute between the shooter and the victims (divorce/family issues, etc.) or it's a former disgruntled employee.
I can't imagine what political motives someone would have for shooting up an IHOP.

One confirmed dead in Carson City shooting; eight transported to hospitals
Lt. Rob Van Diest of the Reno Police Department said one person has been confirmed dead.
Four victims have been transported to Carson-Tahoe Hospital in Carson City. Three of them are in surgery.
Four victims were transported to Renown Regional Medical Center, two in critical condition and two with less-serious injuries.
...Ralph Swagler, owner of Locals Barbecue in the same strip mall as the IHOP, said he saw a man wearing a red shirt and black shorts pull up outside the IHOP in a blue minivan.
Swagler said the man had a rifle. He shot and killed a man on a motorcycle, then walked inside the IHOP and started shooting.
Swagler said the man spent several minutes there, then walked back outside into the parking lot and began firing into the Locals Barbecue and an H&R Block in the strip mall.
“This happens in third-world countries, not here,” Swagler said.

TJ: And you say almost anyone with sufficient money can buy one of these from a nearby merchant?

That's what motivated Carolyn McCarthy to run for Congress - her husband was shot and killed by Ferguson.

In one year, 31,224 people died from gun violence and 66,769 people survived gun injuries (National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC)). That includes:
12,632 people murdered and 44,466 people shot in an attack (NCIPC).
17,352 people who killed themselves and 3,031 people who survived a suicide attempt with a gun (NCIPC).
613 people who were killed unintentionally and 18,610 who were shot unintentionally but survived (NCIPC).
You can see tables on gun deaths here: 1) annual gun deaths and gun death rates by age and intent and by race/ethnicity, 2) ranked state gun death rates, and 3) trends in gun deaths and gun death rates by intent.
Often, we recall the horrific mass shootings where an unstable or perturbed individual opens fire and kills or injures people using powerful semiautomatic weapons. We have kept track of these all-too-common incidents in an interactive map and chronological lists: mass shootings, school shootings, and assault weapon shootings.

Over a million people have been killed with guns in the United States since 1968, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were assassinated (Childrens’ Defense Fund, p. 20).
U.S. homicide rates are 6.9 times higher than rates in 22 other populous high-income countries combined, despite similar non-lethal crime and violence rates. The firearm homicide rate in the U.S. is 19.5 times higher (Richardson, p.1).
Among 23 populous, high-income countries, 80% of all firearm deaths occurred in the United States (Richardson, p. 1).
Gun violence impacts society in countless ways: medical costs, costs of the criminal justice system, security precautions such as metal detectors, and reductions in quality of life because of fear of gun violence. These impacts are estimated to cost U.S. citizens $100 billion annually (Cook, 2000).

DID YOU KNOW? Where there are more guns, there are more gun deaths.
An estimated 41% of gun-related homicides and 94% of gun-related suicides would not occur under the same circumstances had no guns been present (Wiebe, p. 780).
Higher household gun ownership correlates with higher rates of homicides, suicides, and unintentional shootings (Harvard Injury Control Center).
Keeping a firearm in the home increases the risk of suicide by a factor of 3 to 5 and increases the risk of suicide with a firearm by a factor of 17 (Kellermann, 1992, p. 467; Wiebe, p. 771).
Keeping a firearm in the home increases the risk of homicide by a factor of 3 (Kellermann, 1993, p. 1084).

Face it. Most of this is the result of our libertarian policies and attitudes towards gunz.
No. It's a result of our attitude toward and acceptance of violence. When a bare boob on TV gathers record fines but prime time is full of fights & killing, there's the real source of the problem. Magically take away the guns and we'd still be as violent with axes, swords & arrows. Until the acceptance of violence changes, nothing else will.

Southern states still see highest uninsured rates in the country
Texas residents continue to be the most likely in the United States to lack health coverage, with 27.2% reporting being uninsured in the first half of 2011. At the other end of the spectrum is Massachusetts, where health insurance is required and 5.3% of residents lack coverage.

OK then. Let's compare the killing efficiency between axes, swords & arrows and semi-automatic to automatic weapons?
I do agree that guns alone aren't the problem. I would also like to add that I'm not saying we should ban all guns either. It is however time to clamp down and make these weapons harder to purchase.
I'd still rather face someone with axes, swords & arrows than some nut with a semi-automatic.

Fringe baggers tend to see the military, especially the National Guard, as a primary component of Obama's glacially slow plan to confiscate guns and round up Christians for deportation to FEMA camp. My own guess, for what little it's worth, is that the boyfriend angle fits all too well to other domestic cases. I'll bet each person shot, other than the shooter and the girlfriend were people trying to stop him getting to her.

There's an element that assumes any shooting is jihadi until proven otherwise. They also believe, firmly, that any crime committed by a Muslim is an act of jihad or an honor killing, and any suggestion that a specific crime doesn't fit those patterns is seen as pure treacherous naivete. (Pam Geller loves this stuff--no one can convince her that Muslim teenagers who aren't jihadis sometimes set of fireworks in empty lots because they're bored and stupid, this being the primal nature of teenagers.)
Conveniently, all the times it wasn't a Muslim, and, given the odds, that's mostly, are forgotten, so that each time we wake up again in a magical new world where anyone suggesting that non-Muslims sometimes shoot people is a dhimmi sucker.

Since from the eye witness account the guy showed up ready and apparently determined, this would seem to be pretty clearly a premeditated and planned attack. How much time do those Guardsmen spend in an IHOP? If those guys were specifically targeted I wouldn't think the IHOP would be the first place to look.

He might know them, personally, I suppose. The detail that makes me think it might be more random is that the shooter started by shooting a man outside who was getting on his motorcycle. Doing that is taking a risk that your actual target might get blocked off as a result--what if an employee reacts fast enough to chain the doors and yell for everyone to get down?
