LGF Poll: Which GOP Candidate Has the Best Chance?

I'm saying Rick Perry but dreading it.
Also, his state is burning. Shouldn't he be focused on that?
3 | lawhawk Tue, Sep 6, 2011 12:44:44pm |
I went with Perry. He's got the ground game, TP cred, and appeals to the same crowd that is enamored with the likes of Bachmann or Palin.
His only real competition is Romney, and I think the GOP voters aren't going to support Romney particularly through the South and West.
Perry's biggest concern - himself. If he self-destructs, then Romney's chances improve dramatically. I think most everyone else is playing for a VP slot if that.

6 | albusteve Tue, Sep 6, 2011 12:45:28pm |
MB is crazier than all of them put together, so I voted for a lesser lunatic....Perry
8 | elizajane Tue, Sep 6, 2011 12:45:57pm |
This is the ONLY time I will ever vote for Rick Perry.
I do think he has the best chance, and I don't think that it's a good thing for anybody, not even for Obama, who should really have a sane opponent. Standing on stage with a lunatic doesn't necessarily suddenly make you look strong. It can make you look like an idiot. It can make the whole process look ludicrous.
But unless the punditocracy takes him down (and do they really have the power to do that?), I think Perry is the GOP candidate.

Bachmann wont be able to stand the heat of a concerted campaign and her campaign staff is already having issues (her top consultant is stepping down and the deputy is leaving - and they already consider her the third choice behind Mitt and Perry).

I want Romney, but say Perry--with a vague hope that some sane governor will suddenly pop out of the woodwork and take everything closer to the date.
21 | allegro Tue, Sep 6, 2011 12:49:13pm |
I'm not at all convinced that Perry will make it that far. Right now he's the latest shiny thing, like Fred Thompson in 2008. I strongly suspect that he will flash and burn in the near future. I also think that Republican PTB are going to see to it that the less insane Romney gets the nod.
22 | makeitstop Tue, Sep 6, 2011 12:49:19pm |

I went with the popular pick, Perry. He's charismatic, seen as successful, and he's good at throwing the base bones. Romney is probably the most likely to beat Obama but that doesn't mean he's the most likely nominee. Two different things IMO.

Perry has the message that people want to believe:
cut taxes, abolish regulation, create jobs
it fits the soundbyte-friendly, bullet-point style of modern campaigning, sounds good in a 30-second spot with amber waves of grain in the sunset over majestic purple mountains (soaring eagle optional) and is what people want to hear, so they will not bother listening to assessments of all the flaws in the argument.
57 | HappyWarrior Tue, Sep 6, 2011 1:00:51pm |
Honestly I am of the thought htat Romney is overrated a bit as a candidate. I know the GOP likes to nominate historically runners up (Bush, Dole, McCain) but Romney couldn't beat McCain and Huckabee last time both of whom had some serious problems with the base. I don't know. Mitt just doesn't impress me as a candidate. I mean no way I vote for him overall but there must be something I am not seeing. Mitt seems to be running on "I'm electable, vote for me." but is he really? It's my understanding from Massachusetts friends that he won in 2002 by a running as a moderate and b benefitting from a weak Dem candidate. Perry's a jerk, I think most of us here on LGF agree on that but the man I think can position himself as more electable than Romney by virtue of having won three state wide elections. Mitt only has one election win to his credit ever.

He's also doomed if he does, judging by his comments today.
Asked why it would be so hard for him to become the nominee, Giuliani sketched a picture of a nominating process designed to keep Republicans like him -- pro-choice, pro-gay rights (sort of) and (at one time) pro-gun control -- from ever getting to the White House, despite the fact their views may be more in line with the general electorate than their more socially conservative opponents.
"I'm simply not that conservative on social issues," he said. "And I'm not willing to change just to become President."
He's lost the nutjob vote before announcing.

Good qualities - Hair. Executive experience.
Bad qualities - Perry is an abject theocrat. Texas' economic miracle is based entirely on government jobs. He is anti science and plans to gut the EPA. He's a secessionist. He threatened the Fed chairman. He's presided over the execution of an innocent man.

Might as well post the abstract:
Abstract : China controls approximately 97 percent of the world's rare earth element market. These elements, which are not widely known because they are so low on the production chain, are critical to hundreds of high tech applications, many of which define our modern way of life. Without rare earth elements, much of the world's modern technology would be vastly different and many applications would not be possible. For one thing, we would not have the advantage of smaller sized technology, such as the cell phone and laptop computer, without the use of rare earth elements. Rare earth elements are also essential for the defense industry and are found in cruise missiles, precision guided munitions, radar systems and reactive armor. They are also key to the emergence of green technology such as the new generation of wind powered turbines and plug-in hybrid vehicles, as well as to oil refineries, where they act as a catalyst. (Note: for more in-depth information on the specific uses of rare earth elements, refer to Appendix A). Over the past few years, China has come under increasing scrutiny and criticism over its monopoly of the rare earth industry and for gradually reducing export quotas of these resources. However, China is faced with its own internal issues that, if not addressed, could soon stress the country's rare earth industry. This paper is designed to give the reader a better understanding of what rare earth elements are and their importance to society in general and to U.S. defense and energy policy in particular. It will also explore the history of rare earth elements and China's current monopoly of the industry, including possible repercussions and strategic implications if rare earth elements supply were to be disrupted.

I think Rick Perry can win. It all depends on a combination of the economy (which the Republicans will continue to sabotage,) debate performance and the lack of any serious scandal affecting him. It's a dangerous mentality to think he can't win, with the right running mate he could be an incredibly formidable opponent.

Selectively edited "New Journalism" is spreading:
172 | simoom Tue, Sep 6, 2011 2:19:14pm |
It's bizarre how many news orgs are screwing up the Hoffa quote today. Most aren't even abridging with ellipses in a misleading way, they're just outright reporting a quote that was never said. It makes it really hard not to conclude that a whole lot of journalists these days never even bother to watch firsthand what they're reporting on, and instead regurgitate whatever they saw from their morning Drudge read.
For example, here's ABC's Ann Compton's write up today:
[Link: abcnews.go.com...]
“President Obama, this is your army,” Hoffa concluded to applause, his voice raising to a shout. “We are ready to march. Let’s take these sons of bitches out and give America back to an America where we belong,” he said, stepping back from the lectern where President Obama would speak less than an hour later.
As we've seen elsewhere that bolded quoted sentence is actually an amalgam of the beginning and the end of an entire paragraph. It should be:
"We are ready to march. And, President Obama we want one thing – jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs. That’s what we’re going to tell him. When he sees what we’re doing here he will be inspired. But he needs help. And, you know what. Everybody here’s gotta vote. If we go back and keep the eye on the prize, let’s take these son of a bitches out and give America back to America where we belong."
Oh, and apparently the trivial truly is king as far as modern journalism is concerned. Doing a quick scan of Politico I count at least 7 Tuesday Hoffa speech stories across their site...

I think this question would be best asked after the 1st debate. Perry doesn't really so the whole debating thing. If he has a good night Wednesday, then I'd say he's got it. But if he proves to be not ready for prime time, I think it shifts back to Romney at least until the next debate.
Is Perry gonna be there or is he sticking around Texas because of the wildfires? (could also be a twofer if he hates debates)

That could be. But I think he will do very well in the debates. The GOP screwed up the last/only time they have ever had a rock star, which was Palin, so they are desperate for another one. pRick Perry fits the bill. I think he'll be given pass after pass after pass because of it.

I'm not sure. If he skips the debate he will look like he's chicken. The wildfires are serious, but they have been going on for quite a while now and so far all he's done about it is ask people to pray and fast for rain. If he isn't there he's got no excuse and will confirm my suspicion that debating scares him. He knows as the new candidate and front runner he will be the target and there is a lot to hit him with.

I don't think that Rick Perry will get the nomination, for a couple of reasons.
First, his abject refusal to participate in debates. This may be okay early on, but the closer to primary season we get, he's going to start alienating voters.
Second, his slightly less than absolutist views regarding immigration. The Nationalist wing of Republicans (aka Geller, etc) already don't like him much because of this.
If Rudolph Giuliani decides to join the fray, honestly, unless he royally screws up, the nomination is his to lose.

Emergency plans--have them? Gone over fire safety and had a mock fire drill in your home? What about Grandma? Does your extended family have an emergency plan for Grandma or Aunt Betsy?
Meds. They aren't just for recreation.
Food. Have you thought about what could be eaten without power?
Heat. I know right now everyone east of the Rockies is thinking they could live without it for a while, but really. Heat.

re: #214 engineer dog
keep in mind the competition between the candidates is just a symptom
the real fight in the republican party is between the tea party and the traditional republicans
Over the last four decades, the Republican Party has transformed from a loyal opposition into an insurrectionary party that flouts the law when it is in the majority and threatens disorder when it is the minority. It is the party of Watergate and Iran-Contra, but also of the government shutdown in 1995 and the impeachment trial of 1999. If there is an earlier American precedent for today’s Republican Party, it is the antebellum Southern Democrats of John Calhoun who threatened to nullify, or disregard, federal legislation they objected to, and who later led the fight to secede from the union over slavery.
Today, Republicans are threatening a government shutdown and an international monetary crisis over raising the debt ceiling. They have demanded a set of ruinous concessions as a condition for raising the ceiling. These conditions would include draconian budget cuts at a time when economic growth has virtually stalled—it grew a mere 0.9 percent the first half of this year—because of the exhaustion of the 2009-10 government stimulus. To gain Tea Party votes, House Speaker John Boehner set another condition for raising the debt ceiling again in six months: the passage by the House and Senate of a constitutional amendment to balance the budget. An amendment of this kind would make it impossible for the federal government to reverse economic downturns. The Republicans are, in effect, demanding a major constitutional change in return for not shutting down the government and undermining the American economy. That’s insurrectionary behavior.

The money and foreign policy oriented parts of the GOP have never been hot on the Tea Party. They loved how it picked the GOP off the floor after its 2008 drubbing, but they want it as a path back to power. But if partnering with the Tea Party looks likely to lead to financial or foreign policy disaster, then those non-socon parts of the party will rebel. I have no doubt that there is a part of the GOP that is tired of the TP, but they aren't a majority of the party. At best it's 50/50 and they can't control them. They couldn't control them when they were going on about birth certificates or during the debt ceiling debate or when they nominated a bunch of lunatics that cost the GOP the Senate. I keep hearing about these sane Republicans and I don't doubt their existence. What I do doubt is their power and numbers. If they have the power and the numbers to reign the TP in they better get to it because Perry is at 30% and when the other clowns start dropping out of the race their crazy voters will go to him, not Romney.

If they have the power and the numbers to reign the TP in they better get to it because Perry is at 30% and when the other clowns start dropping out of the race their crazy voters will go to him, not Romney.
most voters don't try to control anybody...they sit on their ass until election day, then vote...there is no mechanism to discount the national, face time loonies....all of that is yet to be decided

As part of the foreign policy element, I'll be one of the rebels.
My eye has been on the Breitbart/O'Keefe/Big ________ crowd, the people who are sick of harping on abortion and gays, but still retain every other bigotry and class resentment they were inculcated with. They're also not averse to using PC language to their dishonest ends, either, e.g. Shirley Sherrod "is racist" against them, etc.
That to me is the future of the GOP.
But if I'm going to be a rebel, my mother's family's North Carolina heritage means I'll have to learn to whistle 'Dixie' first. /in jest
Hm, not recommended. Didn't work out so well the last time. /

Rudy himself was quoted saying he couldn't get the nomination.

Technically he did "more" than pray: he quartered the budget for volunteer fire departments.
He's going to be a strong candidate for awhile. He's hitting the correct chords with fundamentalists and industrialists which is going to sustain him through the primaries barring a major crap-up. All of his anti-regulation stuff is going to throw a lot of business interests behind him--look at the super-PAC money dump that's already starting. Looking forward, the "Texas Miracle" is a marketable, bite-sized bit of mythology, and will likely be a big selling point for the consultants and wonks constructing his public image for a national electoral base: refuting it requires detailed analysis that doesn't "sell" as smoothly.
I suspect the other campaign tone we're going to see was set by that set of comparison photos distributed by some racist gasbag that I don't recall: Obama in seventies clothes looking hip versus Perry in his Air Force uniform.

Many years ago I went bow hunting with my uncle and his friends in Oregon. One morning we're out and his friend sets up, getting ready to take a buck. We're taking the fast track to the third world.
THE INNOVATION TRAP: HOW THE IPHONE ISN’T SAVING AMERICA
The US economy faces a number of challenges—among them a lack of job creation and an ever-growing trade deficit. Many policy-makers believe that encouraging business innovation is the best response to these particular challenges. Sounds plausible but experience suggests otherwise.
The best example of why simply encouraging business innovation is not the answer for our employment and trade problems is Apple and its iPhone.
The iPhone was introduced in 2007 and has been incredible successful. U.S. sales soared from 3 million units in 2007 to over 11 million in 2009. Global sales topped 25 million in 2009.
While the iPhone is designed and marketed by Apple, almost all the phone’s components are produced by foreign companies operating outside the United States. These components are then shipped to China where Foxconn, a Taiwanese company, oversees their assembly and their export to the United States and other countries. As a result, the iPhone generates few jobs in the United States.

Do you remember the fauxrage when Biden called the health care plan being passed a "big fucking deal?" It was absurd. First because people were acting like oh my god he used profanity and secondly because whether you agreed with Biden and Obama on health care not getting that passed was a big fucking deal as it's been the dream of Democratic presidents and congresses since FDR to get something like that passed by Congress.

You might be able to make quality arrows with your skills, but it doesn't look easy. Carbon is better than aluminum because either it's cracked or it's good to go. Aluminum can take a set. Going through the bones of large game will break and bend arrows, as will missing, hitting trees, rocks, etc.
For a survival tool I'm a much bigger fan of takedown .22 lr rifles. The Marlin 39A is ideal (pre 1988 models shoot better because they have no rebounding hammer.) The Browning SA-22 is nice. The cheapest, best option is probably the Marlin Model 70 PSS, a quick takedown stainless rifle that's very light and accurate. I think these are more appropriate for survival because without refrigeration you're more likely to be going after small game, and subsonic .22 is very quite coming out the longer barrels. Also you can carry many times more .22 cartridges for the same weight and volume. The reason for takedown models is that they're easier to pack, conceal, and clean.

He promised to bring the corporate tax rate down from the current level of 35% to 25%, in line with much of the rest of the world, saying, "I will do that on day one." He also pledged to immediately halt any regulations and policies implemented by President Barack Obama that stall job growth, and to cut government spending -- except for the military and entitlement programs -- by 5%.
Well there's a problem

THINK OF THE CHILDREN THAT COULD HAVE BEEN IN THAT CROWD!!!1!111 Granted, Dick "Draft-dodging Badass" Cheney once told a Democratic senator, in open session, to go fuck himself, but that's different. The godless liberal probably needed a good telling-off.
Double standard is feature, not bug. The enforced values/actual conduct thing crosses into truly Soviet territory. By I mean "...this seems strangely reminiscent of the structural underpinnings the Solzhenitsyn laid out in the Gulag Archipelago, Vol 1."

I (you can tell by the nic) know very little about hunting. This question is devoid of sarcasm and holier-than-thou-sm. I promise.
I understand that bow hunting gives the critters a better chance; but isn't it more painful for the animal than a gun?
I personally am not quite accurate enough with a bow to consider it an ethical way for me to take game. I know people who are though. I could practice up to that level but right now it's not something I do often enough to get really good at. I don't think it's inherently more painful though, both methods are capable of penetrating both lungs and putting an animal down swiftly and both methods can merely wound an animal. Shot placement and staying within one's personal range is key.

Think about it: if the wingnuts are right and we're facing a coming apocalypse that will render all U.S. currency worthless, why are the fine organizations pushed by Glenn Beck and WND willing to accept such soon-to-be-worthless paper in exchange for one of the only forms of currency that will be viable in the near future?

I'm saying Rick Perry but dreading it.
Also, his state is burning. Shouldn't he be focused on that?
I'm not sure if Rick Perry is still in Texas today, but he cancelled his planned appearance at Jim DeMint's forum yesterday.
In response to the fires Texas Gov. Rick Perry cancelled his planned appearance at a Labor Day forum in Columbia, S.C., today as well as events in California tomorrow to return to Texas, a spokeswoman for Perry told ABC News.
"Our state has got wildfires that are running quite wild at zero containment right now and the winds are supposed to pick up again," Perry said.

I've been noticing a trend lately. Paulians have always been very proficient spammers of social networking sites, Digg, Reddit, etc. Only recently has there been a noticeable push back from the young people who frequent these sites. Mostly over issues like abortion, civil rights, social services. I think younger people have started to wake up to what Ron Paul is all about.

From:
Gunman dead after killing 3, wounding 8 at Nevada restaurant
The suspect, who police say acted alone, also shot himself and later died at a hospital. He was identified as 32-year-old Eduardo Sencion of Carson City, Sheriff Kenny Furlong said.
The motive for the shootings remains unclear.
Sencion worked at a family business in nearby South Lake Tahoe, Calif., and had no known affiliations with anyone at the restaurant, Furlong said.
Sencion's family had raised concerns about his mental health in interviews with investigators, Furlong said. He did not elaborate.
