Tech Note: Polls for Pages

Ask whatever you like
LGF • Views: 29,363

Tonight we’re announcing a cool new feature for LGF Pages — each LGF Page can now contain an Ajax-based poll, just like the ones you’ve seen on LGF front page articles.

The interface is very simple. A poll consists of a “topic,” and two or more “options.” You can think of the topic as the poll’s question, and the options as the possible replies from which the poll user can choose.

To bring up the poll creation dialog box in the LGF Pages posting app, click the icon that looks like a graph of poll results, and you’ll see something like this:

Each poll must contain a topic and at least two options. You can add new blank options by clicking the ‘Add Option’ button, and remove options by clicking, oddly enough, ‘Remove Option.’

You can also let people vote more than once; up to three times, in fact.

When you’ve entered your poll’s topic and options, click the ‘Save’ button to keep what you’ve created, or ‘Cancel’ to wipe the form clean and start over.

Once you’ve created and saved a poll, the poll icon turns red to remind you that you’re going to attach a poll to this LGF Page. The ‘Preview’ button shows you how the poll will look when the Page is posted; polls are appended to the end of the post.

If you do have some poll data entered when you save your LGF Page, you’ll see a new prompt asking you to confirm that you really do want to attach the poll to your Page.

That’s all there is to it! Oh, wait — one more detail. Since you can edit your LGF Pages with the Pencil icon, if a Page has a poll attached you’ll now see a checkbox labeled ‘Show Poll’ at the bottom of the editing popup. You can hide or show the poll by changing the state of this checkbox.

As an example, Daniel Ballard jumped right in and created a poll for this Page: The New LGF Poll Feature.

The ladies man does not understand. All I know is that Ajax is stronger than dirt.

Wait...aren't polls for strippers?

I'll post a poll to determine whether I should link to the YouTube of a non-stripper pole-dancing to Pachelbel's Canon

Very random, but I laughed.

RT @foodrepub: #WordOfTheDay: Tired of everyday chicken? If your usual hen's lacking in flavor, why not try a capon? bit.ly/nMqk31

What, you may ask, is a capon? Well, it's a castrated rooster. Insert witty cock joke here.

Few things get better with castration, but the capon is one of them. Castration makes for a plumper bird whose meat is more tender and flavorful. The capon was "invented," as it were, by the Romans (pre-Christ) as a way to get around a grain ration that prevented them from fattening hens the normal way. Capons are considered a luxury food as they are much more difficult to find than your standard mass-produced chicken, but they are worth the hunt.

Can you do multiple polls on the same page? Let's say when football season starts I want to do a page that allows lizards to vote on who will win each NFL division..

Can we embed polls into other polls?

I'd like to know whether pun threads, boob threads or butt threads are the most popular.

I usually don't comment on new LGF features, but I like this one. While many pages are news stories and opinion pages, this offers more interaction with the lighthearted stuff that is needed in our political world.

No, you'd have to do a Page for each one. I may allow multiple polls in a single Page in the future -- but it complicates the interface quite a bit.

Were you here for the "douche thread"? About 1200 comments and about 800 of them had the word "Douche" in them. Was EPIC!!!!!

Charles - not sure if you've gotten feedback on this yet, but the site runs better on Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3). Droid 2 Browser. I'll try it out in Firefox, which was giving me a lot of general problems - it may be fixed.

Charles, can you add a linky at the top to return to the front page, like on the pages?

Cool feature, even Stinky got in on it!
