Todd Rundgren: Flaw

But you’ve got one fatal flaw
Music • Views: 31,170

The most appropriate song I could find to follow tonight’s debate: Todd Rundgren’s “Flaw.”

Youtube Video

You could be my everything, you almost have it all
You’d be perfect but you’ve got one fatal flaw
We could live so happily, the envy of them all
But that’ll never happen cause you’ve got one fatal flaw

And all my friends they look at me
Say ‘that’s a ten’ and I agree that you are a mad love maker
I know I should accept it all and overlook the little faults
But this one’s a real deal breaker

And all my friends they look at us
Say ‘he won’t bend when he could just live happily ever after’
It’s not that I’m afraid of it, but every time you force a fit
There’s crying instead of laughter

So why you gotta be such a lyin’ ass motherfucker?
So why you gotta be
Such a lyin’ ass, lyin’ ass, lyin’ ass
Motherfucker

And you sure had me fooled
You really sent me back to school
And you made me feel like a royal tool
Still I can’t help having a soft spot for you

If we put it down on paper and we’re careful how we draw
It looks perfect but it’s got one fatal flaw
And you may overlook the obvious, pretend you know it all
You refuse to see it, still it’s got one fatal flaw

The American political scene may be flawed (critically), but the producers at DWTS know exactly what they are doing:

ABC will be sure that, if true, everybody will know that Cher is coming.

Obama: ‘Best Debate Ever’

Mr. Obama watched the debate surrounded by advisors in the White House Situation Room, where the mood was said to be tense “up until the first time Rick Perry opened his mouth.”

If the GOP candidates weren't such a mess Obama might be in serious trouble. Right now they are his biggest asset and pretty much the only thing ensuring him a second term.

Rundgren's new recording of songs he produced for other artists (Meatloaf, Grand Funk Railroad, Patti Smith, XTC, Psychedelic Furs, Hall & Oates, The Tubes) re-modeled into dance tracks "drops" next week. My advice: stick with Liars.

For example, in the story that ran the past couple of days (about which I put up a few links in a comment) with the statistical evidence for an ancient admixture in certain populations of contemporary Africans (not to be confused with the Neanderthal or Denisovan admixture that happened in Eurasia), Ars Technica ran an article today:

Did Africans join in on archaic interbreeding?

I can not help but feel a slight tinge of liberal optimism in this piece. I suspect that the author wishes to convey the sense that it would somehow be negative if Africans had NOT benefited from a more generous genetic background. This is an unhealthy position, as it inherently assumes that other modern races would be genetically "superior" if proven to be further improved by natural selection and socio-environmental pressures. Far preferable would be position that human biodiversity is a good thing and must be preserved no matter what baggage one's chromosomes carry. A pragmatic approach here would be better suited to society at large.

In the spirit of currently known facts on the admixture of ancient population groups, the African flavour of human seems to be the "brute", "unrefined" form of man, with all his flaws and benefits unhindered by the various evolutionary pressures our climates and societies have produced. This could in part explain the acute vehemence and venereal behaviour of modern blacks.

Fortunately there are a couple of commenters at ArsTechnica who are calling that guy out.

Yet... there are some well known blog writers (besides the usual suspects - Sailer, etc.) on science that also exploit bits of science news and build some morally questionable positions. And then there are the blatant racist sites, but they are always on an ugly-binge.

The science of genetics is powerfully changing biology, but it has side effects.

And when Perry is asked about the two-hundred and thirty some people he’s executed on death row during his governorship, the audience bursts into applause. Torture, war, and death, and this is the “pro-life” party.

I submit to you that this moment is perhaps the most telling since George W. Bush left office; that the modern Republican party is not only intellectually bankrupt, but morally bankrupt as well. The conservative movement and the Fox News and talk radio media empire it has built up around itself is not only ethically decrepit but morally atrophid.

Not being a native English speaker, I had to look up “vehemence” and “venereal”. So what you're saying is that black people are more passionate and more fond of sex than the rest of us? Do you have any hard data to back up the proposition that these are genetic and not cultural traits? (If they exist, that is.) Scientific racism went out of fashion around the mid-20th century; I'd be fairly sceptical of any attempt to revive it, no matter how eloquent it's done…

New in pages: Navy fires another commanding officer, the 18th this year

The officer in question, skipper of the destroyer USS The Sullivans, was sacked because his crew apparently mistook a civilian trawler for a float target during a live fire exercise and fired at it with 5 inch practice shells. The shells are inert but they weigh 70 pounds each and arrive at supersonic velocity. The trawler was not hit or we would be hearing a great deal more about this.

You can understand the Navy's concern.

At the Fever Swamp, a sizable number of posters manage to to dismiss this concern and spin the story into an anti-gay tirade. To them it is obviously part of some evil Obammunist plot to get rid of officers who oppose the "gay agenda."

Texas pleads for help as fires sear state
The state forest service is spending about $1.5 million a day to fight the blazes, officials say. Budget cuts and lax preventive measures are contributing factors.

By Ashley Powers and Molly Hennessy-Fiske, Los Angeles Times
September 7, 2011, 5:23 p.m.
Reporting from Bastrop, Texas, and Los Angeles—

Beleaguered firefighters battling one of the most destructive Texas fire seasons on record found themselves punished not only by searing weather, but by lax brush clearance and dwindling budgets.

With no end in sight to scores of blazes — the largest had burned 785 homes and was only 30% contained Wednesday — fire officials pleaded for more equipment, and experts urged property owners to do a better job of protecting their homes.

"We needed resources yesterday," Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said, noting that he and Gov. Rick Perry — who was in California for a debate of GOP presidential contenders — were requesting that the federal government declare the state a major disaster area...

The state forest service is spending about $1.5 million a day to fight the blazes, officials say. Budget cuts and lax preventive measures are contributing factors.

Small government!

Oh, Sharpton just asked him that in a post debate Q&A session. Also called him and the others out on the Reagan love fest and how they ignored that Reagan was a tax increaser, etc. He likes to dodge questions IMO. I am not impressed by this guy at all or any of the candidates really. Seems like more of the same stuff we've heard before.

Ah. Well, too bad Sharpton couldn't have asked all of them that. (And I'm sure the answer would have been some parroted version of the same.)

Look at this ridiculous puff piece /eyeroll

As he grew into adulthood, Cain rejected the hyphenated American concept, but did embrace what he calls the black pride movement. “I have an old picture of me with a big Afro — and I’m not going to give it to you,” he teased, during our interview.

Cain also speaks frequently and fondly of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., saying King was “called to lead — he really didn’t go looking for that job. Because he was a natural born leader, Dr. King sort of rose to the top.”

… Luther and Lenora also had a dream — they wanted their children to go to college.

Despite graduating second in his 1963 high school class at Samuel Howard Archer High School (Herman went to school with soul singer Gladys Knight) — the University of Georgia (which first accepted black students a couple years earlier) — turned him down.

But both Cain children did go on to graduate from college: Thurman from Morris Brown College and Herman from Morehouse College (both schools were in Atlanta). “I remember at my college graduation, how proud my mom and dad were that I was actually walking down the aisle with that robe on,” Cain recalls, “they were beaming.”

Lol don't tell those confederates he's trying to get to vote for him that he was into the Black Power movement, and is a Morehouse (i.e. black reverse-racist college) man. /Schadenfreude

We certainly did today. A temperature inversion trapped much of the smoke from the Bastrop Complex Fire below 3,000 feet today and it moved into Austin. At 11:15, I was driving through downtown to pick up donation boxes from the Capital Area Food Bank. I work up north, and it stank like shit, but downtown had, at best, two miles visibility. I was nearly choking on the smell. It was a mix of wood smoke, styrene, other plastics, foam, &c. Not only that but old electrical wiring is coated with PCB impregnated plastic. Nice. When you burn houses, cars, &c, it's a nasty mix mix of airborne spooge.

The patrolman's report said when he arrived at the scene a half-block above Monroe Boulevard, "the cow was in the process of losing its head," Burnett said.

The man sawing at the animal's neck, the owner of the beef, denied shooting the cow on the premises, telling the officer the animal had been dispatched outside the city limits.

Saw that. Peter King is beating that drum and he kinda knows his stuff. One comment I read said the Colts should get Carson Palmer in there.

174 RogueOne  Thu, Sep 8, 2011 3:30:38am

re: #173 Cannadian Club Akbar

Collins is old and immobile and the colts O-line is going to suck the first half of the season. Carson would be an upgrade but Cincy is retarded and won't trade him until next season after his stock has dropped. The way the colts offense is set around Manning, I don't think there is any qb that can come in and run it effectively. They're going to have to dumb it down. If you have Addai start him, I'd bet they'll be leaning on him pretty heavy the first few weeks.

True. Manning calls more audibles than anyone I've seen. Do they send in 3 plays at a time and tell him "whatever you think is best"?

It's the same formation every play and they decide at the line what they're going to do. The good news is all the receivers and backs are healthy which is a big difference from last year when they were using guys off the street. One of those guys, Blair White, played well enough to make the team this year. This is sort of a good sign:

[Link: www.indystar.com...]

Colts TE Dallas Clark is impressed with how quick a study QB Kerry Collins is proving to be. "He's got to learn everyone's position, the protections, the routes, so he's got a lot on his plate. Me and Reg (wide receiver Reggie Wayne) were joking about it. It took me about three years to learn this offense, and he's somehow learned it in about three weeks."

Complain About Being Sexually Assaulted By A TSA Thug? THEY’LL SUE!
[Link: www.popehat.com...]

On March 31st of this year, Amy Alkon — a writer who blogs at the Advice Goddess Blog — was sexually assaulted in front of dozens of witnesses.

The person who sexually assaulted her was not punished and will not be punished. Why? Because our government sees fit, as part of its policy of security theater and perpetual wartime mentality, to confer a privilege to sexually assault strangers in public upon certain people: employees of the TSA.
....
Despite the wide audience she enjoys, Amy’s story could easily have been lost in the din of routine TSA excess. But because Amy didn’t take it quietly — because she called the TSA employee out for her assault, and because she wrote about it — now she’s facing a legal threat.

The TSA agent — one Thedala Magee — has demanded that Amy pay her $500,000 for Magdee’s distress at being called out.
....
See, in our national scheme of security theater, it’s Thedala Magee’s role to touch the genitals of strangers, and it’s Amy Alkon’s role — and yours, and mine — to stand there and take it, or the terrorists win. Amy upset that natural order — so it must be a payday for Magee.

The terrorists won.

Here it is:

Woman has to pay $1k for forced cavity search
[Link: rt.com...]

The woman, whose name is being withheld, was apprehended by authorities earlier this summer. Acting on “credible information from a reliable source,” Metro Sgt. Mike Alba obtained a search warrant from Magistrate Court to send the woman into Memorial Medical Center to undergo a forcible and thorough body cavity search.

Not only did the probe come up fruitless, however, but the woman was footed with a medical bill for $1,122 for something she never wanted or asked for. Attorney Michael Lilley is representing the woman and served the county a claim last week that they will be held responsible for the hospital fees, which he is calling “unlawful.”

While Sgt. Alba says his source believed the woman was concealing up to an ounce of heroin on her person, the authorities had no other evidence against the woman other than hearsay and she had no criminal record. Doctors did not recover any drugs in the search and the woman was not formally arrested or charged with any crime. Even still, the Las Cruces Sun-News reports that the woman was held in custody for several hours.

They managed to get a court ordered cavity search based on the word of one "informant". That's outrageous.

She's learned a couple of lessons and so have her friends. They charged her based only on the word of another person at the party so there's a chance the prosecutor won't want to fight it out for the next year. It's a class c misdemeanor ($500 fine max). My original thought was to drag it out as long as possible to make sure it costs them more than the $500 they might make off of it but I changed my mind. I'm meeting with my attorney next week with the expectation that he'll get it to go away.

Americans understand justice. That's why we invaded Iraq and killed over 100,000 civilians under false pretenses and for the revenge of 3,000 people that were killed on 9/11 which was not perpetrated by Iraqis.

Right.

Careful, you'll get Christopher Hitchens whining about drafts and how bad Saddam was if you keep on like that.

Oh, and nobody wants to call themselves poor or working class or lower class. I talked to two people who were both out of work, the last jobs they'd both had were as waiters, they'd never had a job that paid over $12 an hour, they had an income of below $25,000 a(and this is in New York City) but to themselves they were middle class because they'd gone to college.

I think we've put so much emphasis on social status in the US people are lying to themselves and voting against their own interests because they don't want to admit they're poor and need help.

BNP Picks Falklands Veteran As Mayoral Candidate – Sort Of

And in what looks at first glance like a clever move they’ve chosen Carlos Cortiglia, a Uruguyan former party press officer of Spanish and Italian descent. Not only is Cortiglia rather more international than we’ve come to expect from the BNP, he’s also a great patriot – volunteered, indeed, to fight in the Falklands war.

The only slight problem is that it was for Argentina.

....the BNP have picked a mayoral candidate so dedicated to this country that, the last time he had the chance, he went to war against it. And did so, moreover, to defend a murderous fascist regime. That should neatly upset the party’s supporters, without convincing anyone else to change their minds.

Greets and saluts from the once-again soggy NYC metro area. Overnight we got quite a bit of rain, and flooding is resuming across parts of the area already flooded out by Irene. Now comes word that 100,000 people are being evacuated in parts of PA due to the same rains - remnants from TS Lee. Major flooding and problems around Philly, including mudslides closing the Schuylkill and major flooding expected along the Susquehanna and Delaware Rivers:

Major flooding is feared later today on the northern half of the Delaware River and in Trenton emergency officials were preparing to evacuate residents of low lying neighborhoods.

Havertown declared a state of emergency. Evacuations were under way at a condominium development in New Hope.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning in effect until 11:15 a.m., citing dangerous" conditions.

Even as the rain started to ease by 6:30 a.m., and water started to recede in some spots, evidence of the damage from the flash flooding was widespread. Some waterways, however, were expected to keep rising for hours.

The Schuylkill Expressway was closed between the Blue Route to Girard Avenue due to a mud slide and flooding at three different locations.

Suburban motorists were being advised to get off eastbound 76 at the Blue Route and take it south to northbound I-95 to get into the city.

Well, the Great Falls are going to be a national park once funding and resources are in place - and I love to get to them when I can (but can't do so when there's flooding b/c I'm on the wrong side of the river and can't get there due to flooded roads.

BTW, for folks in the New Hope/Lambertville area - prepare for major flooding (again):

The Flood Warning continues for
the Delaware River at New Hope-Lambertville bridge.
* From this morning to Saturday evening... or until the warning is
cancelled.
* At 2:45 am Thursday the stage was 12.2 feet.
* Flood stage is 13.0 feet.
* Major flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... rise above flood stage by this morning and continue to rise
to near 17.3 feet by tomorrow morning. The river will fall below flood
stage by Saturday early afternoon.
* Impact... at 17.0 feet... water is up to the top of the free bridge
piers.

That means that the area will have been hit by yet another historic level flood. That would put it on par with flooding from 2005, when this photo was taken.

The Catskill reservoirs are pretty much maxed out from the Irene flooding, and there's no additional capacity to divert waters, which means that the downstream rivers are flooding again.

Texas and Mass. Still at Health Coverage Extremes in U.S.
Southern states still see highest uninsured rates in the country

by Elizabeth Mendes

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Texas residents continue to be the most likely in the United States to lack health coverage, with 27.2% reporting being uninsured in the first half of 2011. At the other end of the spectrum is Massachusetts, where health insurance is required and 5.3% of residents lack coverage. These two states have represented the upper and lower bounds of uninsured rates since Gallup and Healthways started tracking coverage in 2008...

So why does Romney keep running away from RomneyCare? Stupid question I suppose.

If I want a Christian theocrat in the WH who wants to criminalize all kinds of bedroom activities (among other things), I'll stick with one who knows how to look at the camera - Cliff Robertson from Escape from LA. At least I know that's fiction. The current crop of GOPers, notably Bachmann and Perry and Gingrich is trying hard to turn Robertson's fictional presidential actions into reality.

It's tough for Bachmann. She's running for selection among a demographic that is two steps away from thinking a woman's place is in the kitchen.

Step 0: Gays are evil (they're already there)

Too sane for the GOP? Huntsman warns that the GOP can't win the WH by denying climate change and global warming.

The comments came during a Republican presidential debate at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, Calif., where many candidates also asserted that climate change is based on "unsettled science."

Just one candidate, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, defended climate research and warned that voters won't elect a Republican who ignores scientific findings.

"When you make comments that fly in the face of 98 out of 100 climate scientists, to call into question the science of evolution, all I am saying is that in order for the Republican Party to win, we can't run from science," Huntsman said. "By making comments that basically don't reflect the reality of the situation, we turn people off."

Politico's John Harris, a debate moderator, pressed Texas Gov. Rick Perry to name the scientists that he refers to on the campaign trail as credibly refuting the international consensus that humans are contributing to global warming.

Perry did not identify an expert, but argued that expensive government policies to reduce carbon emissions are unjustified.

Another reason that Huntsman wont win the nomination.

Rich "straburst" Lowry luvs him some Rick Perry

Perry’s Good Night
September 8, 2011 10:59 A.M.
By Rich Lowry

I underestimated Rick Perry. I had no idea what relish he brings to politics, on the trail and — we learned last night — on the debate stage. He was loose, confident, likable — and blunt as hell. He had his weak moments (the tautological “adventurism” answer, the stumbling around on global warming), but he’ll presumably improve as he gets these questions over and over. He was much better than George W. Bush in the Republican debates in 1999. His “My God, he’s going to run as Rick Perry” moment came on Social Security. I read his answer, though, as a softening of his position even as he doubled down on his rhetoric. As long as he comes up with a serious, credible plan to put Social Security on a better footing, he can survive the opportunities for Democratic demagoguery he’s created with his hot words.

New audio reveals that Cheney ordered the military to shoot down rogue civilian aircraft on 9/11.

Cheney's order was given at "about 10:15" a.m., according to the former VP's memoirs, but the 9/11 Commission Report shows United flight 93 going down at 10:06 a.m. Had the military followed Cheney's order, civilian aircraft scrambling to get out of the sky could have been shot down, exponentially amplifying the day's tragedy.

Raw Story is infested with conspira-liars (see comments). Stupid crook of the day:

Man dressed as Gumby tries to rob store

In the world of animated TV, it's no stretch to say that good-natured Gumby is far down the list of characters that would commit armed robbery.

But a man clad in a full-figured Gumby costume has made a botched attempt to rob a 7-Eleven store in California, and authorities are looking for the suspect, police said on Wednesday.

It happened early on Monday when the man came into the San Diego store dressed as the green claymation figure, accompanied by an ordinarily dressed accomplice, San Diego Police spokesman Detective Gary Hassen said.

The costumed man announced he was robbing the store, but the clerk thought it was a joke, police said.

"Gumby said, 'You don't think it's a robbery? Let me show you my gun,'" Hassen said.

The suspect then tried to reach into his Gumby outfit but experienced a "costume malfunction" and could not fit his hand in a pocket, he said.

Instead of a gun, the costumed suspect pulled out 26 cents in change which he dropped on the floor, police said.

ROFLMAO!

Heh...Ron Paul is an old man and much smaller than Perry. I bet he wouldn't do that to someone his own age and size. This is his style; targeting the weak. I am so sick of this mans bullying tactics.

Yeah. That image just reeks of "arrogant asshole".

I don't think Ron Paul is evil, he's just that crazy uncle everyone has in their family.

So its OK to physically assault him? Are you serious?
I am no Ron Paul supporter by any means, but this demonization of people we dont agree with is what is truly evil.
