David Barton: Demonic Entities Control the Government

Bad craziness at the highest level of the GOP
Wingnuts • Views: 34,489

Religious right pseudo-historian David Barton is connected to at least four of the current GOP presidential candidates; Michele Bachmann has brought him to Washington DC to hold seminars for conservative politicians, and Barton was one of the sponsors of Rick Perry’s “The Response” prayer rally.

Here’s David Barton last year in an interview, explaining why politicians often seem to change when they move to Washington; it’s because there are demons controlling parts of the US government, preventing prayers from getting through to God.

Youtube Video

I’ll tell you one of the things too we’ll never get right until we understand this, it is a spiritual battle. We’re told in Ephesians, it’s not flesh in blood, we’re dealing with spirits. And I’ll tell you out of Daniel, praying, why did that answer get delayed for twenty-one days? Because the Prince of Persia fought against it. There are principalities that sit over certain areas.

And I can tell this in the U.S. Capitol. When I walk from the House side to the Senate side, I cross the middle line of the Capitol, I can feel a different principality because they have jurisdictions over different things. And there are principalities that sit over different government entities that cause them to think really goofy and you can’t get prayers through, they get delayed twenty-one days because the principalities are up there fighting in the Heavenlies.

Because we’re not fighting flesh and blood. And if you don’t understand this is a spiritual battle, and if you don’t understand there are really big principalities and powers sitting over places of power, whether it be banking, or education. There’s principalities that sit over schools to keep those kids from getting knowledge, there’s principalities that sit over financial institutions. They sit over households. That’s why you have principalities in powers, that gradation, you have the corporals, and you have the sergeants, and you have the lieutenants, the captains and the generals, and the generals have a bigger principality and those little corporals may have control over the house but it’s a spiritual battle.

It’s a spiritual battle and we’ll never win until we understand that.

Are those regular days or business days? Who decided on 21 days? Didn't the bible says a day could be a year or a year a day? Is this a case where science hasn't caught up to the bible yet?

Barton doesn't know WTF he's talking about.

Everyone knows demons use ranks of nobility (lord, duke, count, prince) not military ranks. What a dumbass.

I don't know whether these guys really believe in what they're saying or whether they're running a long con, but either option is equally awful.

I just don't get why any rational person -- and I'm willing to be charitable enough to describe anyone as rational who doesn't believe that snakes could talk 6,000 years ago -- would vote for the same people that Barton supports.

Are low taxes/limited government that much of a siren song that you'd willingly jump in the a boat steered by Captain Barton?

It's the tenth chapter of Daniel. Prophecy, reduced to the explanation that God is not answering David Barton's prayers because the liberals are interfering on the bandwidth.

I wonder which angel is the Prince of America.

I fear it is worse than that. There are cynical assholes who do not believe in anything other than making a lot of money, and they put people like this up - ones who truly believe in it - because it can be twisted to supprt their cynical, self-serving ends.

And once again, I still do not understand how people who reject Evolution so avidly embrace Social Darwinism, and how those who embrace the Free Market support corporate socialism

24 celticdragon  Thu, Sep 8, 2011 1:15:31pm

Yeah....

This right out of some of those Christian books from the early 90's like "Piercing The Darkness" and "This Present Darkness" by Frank Peretti where demons actually control schools and a possessed geology major (telling choice, no?) arranges for human sacrifice of the Christian students.

From Library Journal
This sequel to Peretti's This Present Darkness is built upon fundamentalist Christian ideas. As it tells the story of Sally Roe, who goes from spiritualism to conversion, it also traces a battle to save a Christian school from demon-inspired litigation. The human activities are again overshadowed by the battle between angels and demons, whom the author takes quite literally, giving them names, personalities, and dialogue. They influence all human activities, just as human prayer helps angels and hampers demons. Some readers may find this treatment religiously offensive or react negatively to the book's depiction of liberals. But this is a good story, and it offers insight into the kind of religion that sees demons behind every stump and angels in the hen house.

You get to have hero angels who stab demons with really big swords and the demons turn into puffs of red smoke. All of the liberals are demon worshippers or somehow controlled by demons.

Awesome.

Yes. What he's saying is that the the man who David sees in his vision is actually God, and that He is unable to get around the 'Prince of the Kingdom of Persia' until assisted by Michael.

I don't think this is how most mainstream churches interpret this material.

No, that is part of his plan. It will hinge on the extent to which the economy is in the sh*tter, and will also do better with climate of fear and insecurity hanging over America like the pall of a Texas brushfire...he is counting on that driving the fundamentalist Christian vote in his favor.

The creative gerrymandering, new voter ID laws, total destruction of all public unions and every elements of government in republican hands in Wisconsin, I don't hold out much hope for Obama here in Wisconsin. What's left of the labor movement is struggling to gain a local foothold here which will diminish its capacity to volunteer for Obama. I suspect many other states are in this bind.

To dismiss Perry and embrace the squishy middle as a bastion of reason is dangerous.

Do you think he could get elected in a general election while agreeing that demons control the government? Implicit in that claim are statements that
a) Obama and/or his predecessors are under the sway of dark forces
b) He, Perry, is a demon-slayer and will make it a priority of his administration to rid the capital of Lucifer's minions.

Isn't that so far beyond the pale for most voters that he would be doomed?

I don't think Perry has to say it himself. All he really needs to do is go on talking about tax cuts and tough on crime, and the way things used to be, aimed at a more centrist audience, and people like Barton will give the tip to the lunatics that he's down.

How does this differ from Polytheism?

The guy is a heretic.

Well, by my standards, yes. By the standards of just about any mainstream branch of Christianity, yes. C.S. Lewis actually had a bit to say in the intro to "Screwtape", about people who go around believing that Satan is some sort of equal and opposing force to God.

I vaguely have some idea that the Zoroastrians have a formal theology that is closer to that.

But there have long been strains in certain areas and periods of American Protestant belief that have cottoned to this sort of 'Satan is oppressing us, everything that goes wrong is demonic, and people in this very town are working with Them' meme. Salem comes to mind.

perry's gasoline is his appeal to the baggers via swaggering and the thrill of unashamed right wing rhetoric e.g. ss is a ponzi scheme. in order to be plausible as president, he has to keep this yet at the same time appeal to the swing voters who will decide the election

last night he made zero progress in bridging that gap

the partisans on both ends (i'm one of them) make all the noise and get all the attention, but we know who they will vote for. the swing voters seem to be quiet by nature, but if we want to know how the election will swing it behooves us to grok them

it's a mistake, i think, to assume that the electorate took a sharp right turn because of the results of 2010. even in a pres. year, turnout isn't much more than 50%. the swing voters will turn out in 2012 and decide the election yet we ignore them

BTW, almost all news outlets are stepping on their metaphorical tongues about the sediba findings.

Examples include: remnants of the "ladder" meme from earlier creationism, misunderstanding of "gaps", misunderstanding taxonomy (are humans "apes", etc.), parallelism ignored, interbreeding ignored, unable to deal with multiple factors in cause and effect, etc., etc., etc.

The toughest nut to crack is the meme of a hierarchical ladder, which manifests itself subtly by the idea that "humans" had a single ancestor. This is a remnant of
"Adamism", if I may coin a term.

Science has shown that there existed an entire subtribe of upright walking, if only partially upright early on, of primates. And later during speciation events some populations interbred.

That's how we came to be here.

The sediba fossils are important for many reasons, including their age, limb morphology, and brain morphology. They show that among the diverse species roaming Africa 1.8 to 2 million years ago modern-looking structures were appearing.

Neither am I, to be honest. Having seen previews of what's in it so far, I can already tell that it's going to ultimately viewed as "not going far enough" by one half and "going too far" by the other.

Personally, at this point, I think Obama should just play for all the marbles and go from there. Put up a huge spending bill, one that focuses on infrastructure repairs (estimated at roughly $1 trillion minimum) and go from there. A bill that would keep the construction companies going for years. If the GOP wants to kill such a bill, make them work for it.

i only hope that he can make the point clearly enough that despite the theory that government can't create jobs, it does turn out that if there are important things to do, and you hire people to do them and pay them money, it seems that somehow these are actually jobs, although the connection between paying people money to do things and jobs may be difficult for some people to comprehend

That may very well be the new game plan: Keep putting up bills for the GOP to knock down, then making hay out of the downed bills. Thing is, such small, anemic bills aren't going to do more but give the GOP ammunition that Obama's got no concrete plans for ending this economic malaise. Yeah and when has that ever worked? It's one thing for cons to believe their own lies. But why do they expect everyone else to believe them, too?

indeed, and it seems reality and facts aren't nearly as powerful as lies packaged as sharply focussed zingers and when oh when oh when are democrats going to learn how to package up the truth and put it across effectively???

Has anyone figured out wtf she was talking about on energy policy last night?

She's starting to remind me of Linda Blair in the exorcist... her head spins around, she spits out green gunk, makes evil sounds, but makes no sense at all! Bleaugh, I'm gonna hate this election season so much I won't even wanna watch entertaining T.V. because of the political ad's! Oh man! (whimpery and whiny sound inferred!) The signals are that Obama still refuses to truly confront the GOP, which they will keep laying to their advantage.

We'll have to wait and see what happens when the elections get closer. Obama and the Dems may just be sitting back and letting the Republicans dig themselves a bigger hole.

re: #162 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds

That may very well be the new game plan: Keep putting up bills for the GOP to knock down, then making hay out of the downed bills. Thing is, such small, anemic bills aren't going to do more but give the GOP ammunition that Obama's got no concrete plans for ending this economic malaise. The signals are that Obama still refuses to truly confront the GOP, which they will keep laying to their advantage.

look for a pleasant surprise...maybe...
the GOP has been hammered pretty good lately regarding the show they put on over the debt ceiling...jus saying that their job might trump the GOP narrative and if they crack all hell could break loose within the party...I'm not optimistic but just looking at another angle

I'm not really sure how much deeper they can dig. You'd have thought that, after the Ryan Plan, there was no way to go but down. But, instead, they came out of the debt ceiling debate sitting fairly pretty. They got everything they wanted and are now playing the downgrade against Obama.

don't totally disregard buyers remorse...after BO himself is dealing with a boatload of it...winning in the House does not necessarily mean pleasing the voters

The voters by this point are starting to settle into the "A pox on both their houses!" routine. And that spells disaster for an incumbent, as he has to answer for why nothing seems to be going right. Unless Obama can convince voters that the problem lies with the party that his opponent represents, he's going to be a serious disadvantage.

Yup
A couple of years ago, a Republican committee staff director told me candidly (and proudly) what the method was to all this obstruction and disruption. Should Republicans succeed in obstructing the Senate from doing its job, it would further lower Congress's generic favorability rating among the American people. By sabotaging the reputation of an institution of government, the party that is programmatically against government would come out the relative winner.

A deeply cynical tactic, to be sure, but a psychologically insightful one that plays on the weaknesses both of the voting public and the news media. There are tens of millions of low-information voters who hardly know which party controls which branch of government, let alone which party is pursuing a particular legislative tactic. These voters' confusion over who did what allows them to form the conclusion that "they are all crooks," and that "government is no good," further leading them to think, "a plague on both your houses" and "the parties are like two kids in a school yard." This ill-informed public cynicism, in its turn, further intensifies the long-term decline in public trust in government that has been taking place since the early 1960s - a distrust that has been stoked by Republican rhetoric at every turn ("Government is the problem," declared Ronald Reagan in 1980).

And like I said above, he needs to "go big or go home." I'm already seeing voices, even before this speech, calling his proposal "Stimulus II." And that's how it's going to likely be played up, as a revival of a "failed" plan. Thus the GOP opposition won't be towards jobs, but against spending that already "failed."

Hey Obdicut,
You may recall a question we discussed I put to the ACLU about unarmed Police. Never got an answer from them but-Well as much as I disagree with them on some things they do look out for photographers rights. Anyway I just got off the phone with them to say thanks for that article. Long story short, I was taken up on an offer to do some volunteer photography for them at some time soon. What the heck, no need to agree 100% of the time to help them a bit right?

Frum weighs in:

Perhaps not since George McGovern’s annihilation at the hands of Richard Nixon in 1972 has a candidate’s Primary base been so alienated from the center of American political thought as the Tea Party is today. Make no mistake: no candidate who doesn’t convincingly throw the red meat to the Tea Party audiences will have a sliver of a chance of getting nominated.

Some Republicans will begin to realize how dire the situation is - but I'm betting the Teahadis will shout them down. Let the whole party go down in flames, I say.

This isn't surprising.

Barton is a dominionist. He believes that not only are Christians supposed to take control of govt, but that Christians are opposed by real demonic influence that exist over certain places. These demons control the place where they 'live' because of non-Christian behavior and religions (which include Catholicism), and can only be prayed away.

Read talk2action.org for the information on the dominionist movement; they've been researching these groups for years now..

This is the only way they can explain their failure to control every aspect of American politics and society. Because people like Barton are right...I mean, blessed by God 'n' stuff.

If they couldn't blame demons then they'd have to take a closer look at themselves.
