Right Wing Blogs Freaking Out Again: PBS Edited the Obama Speech!

The attack of the dreaded PBS
Wingnuts • Views: 41,587

Here we go again. Don’t these people ever get tired of humiliating themselves?

Practically the entire right wing blogosphere went into vapor-lock this morning, shrieking in unison at the evil librul PBS for “editing” the transcript of the President’s joint session speech on jobs, to cover up his “gaffe” that Abraham Lincoln was a founder of the Republican Party.

American Stinker leads the pack with this typically vitriolic, hate-filled post (but it’s currently on at least a dozen other blogs too): Blog: PBS alters transcript to hide Obama gaffe.

At one point Mr. Obama made a major gaffe; he identified Abraham Lincoln as the founder of the Republican Party.

Lincoln did not join the Republicans until 1856, over two years after the party was founded. The first Republican convention was held in Ripon, Wisconsin in 1854.

Such a gaffe would have brought huge amounts of ridicule and derision on George W. Bush, but in the case of Obama the media yawned.

Actually, they did more than yawn; government-funded PBS has altered the transcript of the President’s speech, removing the offending comment.

So are they right? Did PBS edit the transcript?

Gasp! Yes, they did! Full Text: Obama Vows to Spur Job Creation, ‘Jolt’ Economy in Speech to Congress.

Why in the world would they do something like this? Why, I ask you?

EDITOR’S NOTE: The original transcript provided on this page, as was noted, reflected the president’s remarks as prepared for delivery and released by the White House. This transcript has been updated to reflect the remarks as delivered and released by the White House.

Oh.

The multi-level idiocy of this latest wingnut freakout is impressive. Not only did PBS have a perfectly good reason for changing their transcript, the wingnuts are completely wrong about Lincoln, too.

For example, let’s see what the Republican National Committee website has to say about Lincoln: Abraham Lincoln | RNC: Republican National Committee | GOP

Abraham Lincoln helped establish the Republican Party with a speech denouncing an 1854 law, written by a Democrat Senator, that allowed slavery to expand into the western territories.  Two years later, he co-founded the Illinois GOP.  Lincoln was runner-up for the 1856 Republican vice presidential nomination and then became a Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate.

Oops! Wingnuts with egg on their faces … again. I guess they must enjoy the embarrassment, because they just keep falling for this crap, over and over and over.

Better keep an eye on the revision history of the Abraham Lincoln page at Wikipedia. You know what right wingers do when actual history doesn’t agree with their fractured fairy tales.

UPDATE at 9/10/11 10:25:26 am

Just to rub it in some more, LGF reader Gus 802 posted this great comment with some quotes from conservatives on this issue:

I am a Lincoln/Kemp Republican. It’s 150 years ago in Chicago this year that Abraham Lincoln, the founder of the Republican Party, accepted the Republican nomination for President of the United States. — Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN)

Immigration was a core belief of a founder of the Republican party, Abraham Lincoln. — Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani (R)

Though Lincoln was the founder of the Republican Party, to liberals and advocates of civil rights Lincoln was in that pantheon along with FDR as one of the heroes of liberalism and American democracy. — James Pierson on National Review

George W. Bush is not a Goldwater Republican — he’s a Lincoln Republican. Like the founder of the Republican party, Bush doesn’t mind spending money on his priorities, and he doesn’t mind doing some of this spending with borrowed money. — Jerry Bowyer, National Review

It is a pleasure for me to address you upon the day when this club and our countrymen of all faiths throughout the land are paying tribute to the memory of Abraham Lincoln. We tonight also pay tribute to him as founder of the Republican Party and the inspirer of its ideals. — President Herbert Hoover (R)

It was — it was, in fact, the founder of our party, Abraham Lincoln, who reminded us that a government that can do everything for us is the government that can take everything from us. — Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-AR) 2008 RNC Speech

Gus has a nice long list of the many GOP members calling Lincoln the founder of the Republican party, or a founder.

He was a founding member of it and he was obviously incredibly important in its foundation.

This outrage seems half a lame attempt to hit Obama, and half the weird problem the GOP has with Lincoln.

5 albusteve  Sat, Sep 10, 2011 10:20:56am

why edit it in the first place?

6 HappyWarrior  Sat, Sep 10, 2011 10:21:26am

This is the most stupid outrage yet. Yeah, Abraham Lincoln didn't literally found the Republican Party but he did play a big role in the founding of the Illinois Republican Party and he was the runner up for the VP nomination in 1856 with Fremont. And he was the first successful Republican nominee for president and the party's icon arguably until Reagan. But let's bitch at Obama because we're a bunch of children even though our own website and candidates have said the same thing.

Obviously a liberal PBS plot to retain their public funding.

12 Shiplord Kirel  Sat, Sep 10, 2011 10:26:12am

I've noticed that even Rush Limbaugh now refers to all non-wingnut media as "state controlled." This has been standard troofer/Alex Jones fare for years but it is relatively new to the GOP mainstream. Limbaugh of course defines the mainstream. I wonder how many in their ignoramus audience take it literally?

13 Hal_10000  Sat, Sep 10, 2011 10:26:53am

Wait, Obama improvised the line about Lincoln? I thought the man couldn't speak anything that wasn't on a teleprompter.

The RW really needs to get their Obama slurs consistent.

14 Shiplord Kirel  Sat, Sep 10, 2011 10:27:38am

It is important to understand that Limbaugh and other wingnut media are not the propaganda wing of the GOP. The GOP is the political and legal arm of the wingnut media.

How true that is.

16 Lidane  Sat, Sep 10, 2011 10:39:42am

So let me get this straight -- NPR changes the transcript they have from the original one, which was the prepared remarks (i.e., what Obama planned to say), to the second, which was the delivered remarks (i.e., what Obama actually said), and the wingnuts went into full freakout mode? Does that about sum it up?

These people need a hobby. Or to get laid more often. Or something. It's not healthy to be that stupid.

I want to make sure I have this straight

PBS received the same transcript that every other media outlet did moments before the President gave the speech. PBS posted that transcript to their website and then the President gave his speech, changing a few words here and there and calling Lincoln a founder of the Republican Party whereas the original transcript called him the first Republican President....still, the "founder" line looks pretty much in line with the RNC's view of Lincoln's role, but whatever

Then PBS posts a newer, more accurate transcript.......and this is cause for outrage? I don't get it

I personally thought the President's speech was a bit of a flop but it's an encouraging sign that the wingnuts aren't attacking anything of substance. Cantor and the Republicans have made some noise about passing a few of the proposals individually but there's been no public relations attack on the proposal in it's entirety. Maybe the speech was better than I thought.

Texans are getting pissed at Perry....
You might be surprised: Fact-checking Perry on border violence claim

An extensive July 2011 analysis of crime data from Texas, California, Arizona and New Mexico by USA Today found that "violent crime rates were on average lower in cities within 30, 50 and 100 miles of the border — the distances used to fit various definitions of the 'border region.'" Border cities in Texas were no exception.

Perry's comments have angered El Paso's lawmakers and business leaders who have consistently disputed what they claim is political fear-mongering.

"It's incredibly frustrating to have the governor of our state use the national stage to denigrate our community," El Paso County Judge Veronica Escobar told the El Paso Times after the debate. "We are not unsafe. Every time he says that, it hurts us."

Yes it is

If you take away the tomato sauce, Italian cheeses and replace the dough with cake batter

Then after you cook the batter, add to the pineapple some whipped cream, flip the entire thing upside down and refrigerate overnight

That's not pizza, that's burrito.

There's an LGF Page idea for anyone who wants it: some quotes about Islam from the Shrieking Harpy, since she's claiming today that neither she nor anyone else in "the movement" ever says or implies Islam is evil.

WALL STREET JOURNAL PRINTS GROUND ZERO RADICAL RAUF'S BLOOD LIBEL!!! - Atlas Shrugs

Today's Wall Street Journal actually printed another blood libel from the silver-tongued stealth jihadist, Ground Zero mosque imam Feisal Rauf, unchallenged:

"I launched my effort last year to build an Islamic Community Center in Lower Manhattan as part of reconciliation after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the  vitriol hurled against me and Islam was overwhelming. Islam is evil, our critics said. The only good Muslim is a dead Muslim."

I am outraged. This is the disgusting and vile lie of a leading "moderate" Muslim in the US. No one in the oppostion has ever thought of such a thing, let alone said it.

Anyone who has read any or all of my work (two books, hundreds of columns, and over 20,000 blog posts) knows that I fight violence, value human life above all, and have never implied such a thing. Ever. No one who I work with has ever talked such jihadist tripe.

and you can't tell me they were ALL afraid of Muslims... the police were saving Jones from his own ignorance... I wish he had held his rally, then the captivated audiences of the United States could see him hang himself by his own crazy actions and rhetoric

he admits to his own lack of expertise regarding Islam, and yet it doesn't stop him from condemning it (I dare say many writing on this blog are in the same boat, including its architect): [Link: www.myfoxdetroit.com...]

I'm sure Muslims around the world are bending backward to thank Ms. Geller, Mr. Jones, and all you patriotic Americans for making their Shari'a so clear to them... who knew that Shari'a was so evil!! So thank you thank you thank you THANK YOU for enlightening those backward, blinded, barbaric [bigoted word]s about their own religion. Maybe they'll get their heads out of their asses now and listen to Imams Gafney, Boykin, McCarthy, et al for their tireless essentializing and demonizing of Muslim's own religion. Once Muslims come to their senses and realize that Islam, aka Shari'a, is evil they'll finally come to the straight path, aka Christianity.

Her version of plausible deniability, since the most hateful of comment does not issue directly from her (though she has plenty of stinkers herself); ultimately, whether she wants to cop to it or not, she is and should be responsible for making sure her commenters are reined in and are within the tone she wants to set.

The only thing you can take away from Pam's lack of serious moderation on her commenters is that she ultimately agrees with them, whether she comes out and says it or not.

I read a wingnut article a few days back—don't remember if it was Geller's site or somewhere else—where the wording about some attacks by Arabs somewhere (possibly against Jews) during Ramadan gave the distinct impression that violence was part of Ramadan "celebrations".

In some more than others. E.g. the Ukrainian surname Pavlij wouldn't be changed in Russian or Ukrainian, but I think in Polish it would be something like Pawlijowa.

Karimov is "of Karim", "Karim's". Possibly some ancestor was a son of a Karim.

So such "posessive" surnames will be changed - Karimov/Karimova.

-in endings will also change - Zelenin/Zelenina.

But surnames that look more like nouns than adjectives won't change, as well as foreign surnames.

To make it merrier, suppose there's a white emigre from Russia who from his birth has been an Ivanoff. His wife would be Ivanoff too, and in Russia that doesn't change - she would still be И в а н о ф ф, not Ivanoffa, so it's like having two forms of what basically is the same surname.

To complete our today's lecture on Russian surnames, there's another example of "sex discrimination". While in modern Russian most male surnames are inclined acc. to grammatical case (this was not so even during the 1st half of the 20th century, BTW; also there are exceptions - -ikh/-ykh, -ko etc.), only female surnames ending in -ova and -ina (and Slavic -a surnames) are so inclined. Go figure ;)

Slavic names are interesting. My grandfather's surname has at least three different spellings that I know of. He would tell us that a teacher changed his name to what he used it as but I think what more likely happened is the teacher anglicized it as a means of simplifying it for pronouncation purposes since most of the teachers and professionals in his hometown were of more Western European extraction and he just used it like that. It does explain why my mom's side of the family (the Slavic side) has proven much more difficult in ancestral research. I still think I have some Russian or Ukrainian thrown in there since my Slovak great grandfather worked in Russia as a youth instead of Austria-Hungary and what's more is the fact that Eastern Rite Catholics like him are much more populous in the eastern part of Slovakia as opposed to the majority of the country that is RCC.

Heh, we women just can't win. In languages that use m/f like Spanish, Arabic, etc. we also lose out even if there are a bunch of us—e.g. if there's a group of 1000 females they're referred to in the feminine, but if there's 999 females and 1 male, then it reverts to the male form . Not fair!

We should take more opportunities to learn stuff like that form each other since we have such a diverse crowd.

Not too long ago I was saw that "kohen" is the Hebrew word for priest, so I asked Marjorie if that meant that people with the last name Kohen Cohen, etc. were at some point in their past descended from a priest. She said yes, they were.

In that sense, English is actually very progressive and egalitarian :) Only for certain specific nouns does masculine/feminine apply (e.g. waiter/waitress, actor/actress), and even that seems to be falling out of favor (e.g. waiter/waitress replaced with the neutral term "server")

My Modern American literature professor did something interesting this semester. He started the first day of lecture talking about evolution. Which I can hear the anti evolutionists blowing a gasket form here about it but it was interesting since he traced evolution to the birth of languages. Great class thus far too, I've read short stories by: John Cheever, Ralph Ellison, Flannerty O'Connor, Jamse Baldwin, and John Updike thus far and all have been fascinating in their own unique ways. It's resulted in me taking longer to graduate but I am glad to be an English minor to compliment my history major.

The Irish accent itself is pretty interesting. I've told the tale before of my experiences in Galway studying abroad before but it was interesting the differences in accents my professors had. There was the man who taught us literature who was an American who had been living in Ireland for some time so he had an unique Irish/American accent much like my cousin and her daughters who live in Wales who have a hybrid Welsh American accent. The man who taught theatre who had more less the stereotypical Irish accent. And the history professor was a Belfast native. And then there were the locals from Kerry I met during the weekend trip down there. And the painters who partied with us at the townhouses who were Dubliners. Great accents and people.

re: #295 HappyWarrior

No matter how "unlike" the bio evo, evolution of languages is very relevant to the evo-creo scuffle. Creationists say that information cannot evolve, it can only be created by intelligent agents. And yet natural languages weren't created. There wasn't English 2000 years ago. It evolved. The obvious retort is that people are intelligent agents so that doesn't count. This misses the point rather badly. To language people are like genes - carriers of the language who can "mutate" some of its units, but who do not consciously create it (we aren't taking Esperanto etc.).

Yeah the variety of accents within the English language fascinates me. Frank McCourt, the late writer of Angela's Ashes and one of my favorites had an unique one since he was born in New York but went back to Ireland at a fairly young age and got his primary education there but then came back here, joined the US Army and got his education degree at NYU. And my parents always have to put subtitles on movies from the British isles. And I do too unless it's form Ireland since my time there helped me understand the accent. When we watched The WInd That Shakes the Barley, they needed subtitles but I could understand Cillian Murphy and the other actors fine.

Sounds like the Afghans and their warlords had nothing on the Europeans back in the day. LOL

Pretty much. It is entirely fascinating and absorbing.

So much vitality in the history and lore.

Nah, I don't think so. Any wiggle room she has is that of a worm on a hook. But I am willing to the Lizards decide.

Do a poll! I'll vote she definitely called Islam "evil" in that clip!

re: #137 Charles

I see that Pamela Geller is vehemently denying she has ever said or implied that Islam is evil.

I'm very tempted to put together some quotes.

Looks like Bubblehead II found some good ones:

Found another one.

[Video]Starting off around the 2 minute mark. "Hostile and Evil"

Once again Pam is proven a liar. And with that, I will cease the search, because frankly I feel dirty.

She mentioned a hostile and evil "Force"; obviously talking about the Sith./

NY Democrats are panicking over the possible and likely loss of Rep. Anthony Weiner's seat to a TPer.

Weprin is a career politician who is the son of a former State Assembly Speaker. Nice guy, but he's run a lackluster campaign and apparently thinks that being a Democrat is sufficient to win in the special election. Discontent about the way the economy is going is playing a big role, and national Democrats are concerned that this may be a preview of November elections and then 2012.

Yeah, the polls really seem to be trending away from them Dem. candidate. It's not just that 50/44 Siena poll, but based on recent PPP tweets, concerning their currently in the field NY-09 poll, it doesn't look good either:

PublicPolicyPolling
My pretty straight forward take on the first night of our NY-9 poll: Dems in BIG trouble. It deserves the caps.

It sounds like Weprin didn't campaign that hard because he assumed the district was a gimmie & it was likely going to be traded away in the upcoming redistricting anyway, but now if the Dems in fact lose the seat they'll have to give up a different NY seat.

A few more notable things from the race:

- Weprin can't vote in his own race because he doesn't live in the district and he also wouldn't commit to moving there if he won.

- Ed Koch has been trying to sell the election as an opportunity to send the President a message on Israel though recent polling doesn't necessarily show that having much of an effect:
http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/09/poll-finds-turner-strong-against-weprin-in-race-to-replace-weiner

Only 7 percent of likely voters cited a candidate’s position toward Israel as the most important reason for their vote.

- In a similar vein, Weprin's support of Same Sex marriage may be causing him some trouble with some socially conservative voters:
Matzav Network - Rabbonim Issue Letter: It Is Forbidden to Fund, Support or Vote for Weprin

- Weprin's had a number of unforced errors:
[Link: www.politico.com...]

Weprin endured ribbing in New York City tabloids after he pulled out of a recent debate and explained that he was doing so because of Hurricane Irene – which, at the time, had already passed. A few days later, he was criticized after he told the New York Daily News that the nation’s deficit was $4 trillion, even though it is actually $14 trillion.

...

He also took heat last week for a campaign stunt that fell flat: dispatching a Queens magician named Wendy Wizard to endorse Turner outside one of his fundraising events and to praise the Republican over his support for rewriting Medicare. The Weprin campaign went so far as to advertise the ambush with a press release featuring quotes from Wendy Wizard, which she supposedly “said from her underground lair in an undisclosed part of Queens while stroking a black cat named Oolong.”

- Finally the DCCC really dropped the ball with an ad for this weekend, featuring a corporate jet leaving campaign text in it's wake, where in one scene it travels across a city skyline, evoking 9/11 for many.

Wrapping it all up, it's starting to look like the candidate behind this execrable ad may be winning this one:

When you decide to just phone in your campaign like this, losing is what often happens to you.

The key point, however, is that if Lincoln were alive today, Tea Party Republicans would denounce him as a RINO.
