I saw my boy tumble off the top of our motor home, face first onto the garden tractor...walk away, shoot a couple of baskets and then go in for dinner...give him a broom and tell him to sweep off the basketball court in the drive and suddenly his toe, or hand, or knee hurt...heh

Kids are resilient like that. I hit my left eye on a fence when I was 7 years old or so. Got stitches and was back to goofing around the next day.

I grew up outdoors...I know nothing about broken indoor stuff

22 CuriousLurker  Sat, Sep 10, 2011 3:13:54pm

My half-sister had four boys who were always doing crazy-assed stuff. Ditto for the other half-sis that had six girls. When they all got together, you could be sure someone was going to end up in the hospital.

Examples:

1.) Jumping on the trampoline. Not enough fun on it's own, so they decided to move it closer to the house and jump on it from the roof. Result: one girl with a broken leg.

2.) Playing cowboys & indians. One kid runs in and says his brother isn't breathing. Mom asks what happened as she runs for the door (knowing there's probably no time to waste). Kid says they were hanging one of the bad guys from a real tree with a real rope. Result: one boy alive, but with rope burns on his neck. (Thank God there were no train track nearby, or they would've tied someone to them.)

3.) Kid comes running in with a hole in his head that's spurting blood in sync with his pulse and dripping down his face. Sis grabs grabs kitchen towel to staunch bleeding and asks what the hell happened THIS time. Kid says they where playing war in the 2-story wooden fort my dad built them, and they were dropping bombs on each other. Sis asks what they were using for bombs. Kid answers, "Bricks." Sis screams, "Hold the damned towel towel to your head!" as she flies out door at warp speed. Result: one boy in hospital for stitches, thankfully no fatalities.

It's absolutely amazing that all of them survived to adulthood.

my broken arm...I was atop the garage, fucking around like a bigshot, which was forbidden...I look out across the houses and see my dad driving up the road....I run across the peak, eager to get off the roof, and lunged, airborne, for a nearby tree...I missed and crashed through the branches all the way to the ground...blew my arm apart, and my dad was pissed for the next 45 years...my arm did a 90degree angle and my sister ridiculed my without mercy at my demise...I survived

Sheesh! Just tried to change the oil on my old Chevy. Easy, huh? Wrong. The last person to do it (not me) managed to round off the drain plug so no wrench will fit it. I can't grind it off because my neighbor borrowed my grinder and left town. What kind of moron does it take to bugger an oil drain plug? It's easy on Fords, their plugs are made from pot metal and are designed to be easy to strip or round off. A Chevy plug though is forged steel. To round it off you have to work on it hard with obviously wrong tools. Idiots.

Another time (we lived in Navy housing) a bunch of kids were playing with this big wooden box thing that was leaning against a building. I was the youngest. Sitting on the edge & running away while it tipped over. I got caught under it. That was bad, went to the hospital & had to spend the night - concussion. Got a lot of jokes growing up about my thick head.

And let us not forget the influence that Evel Knievel had on kids. I remember when he came to Town (Twin Falls, Id.) for the attempt to jump the Snake River canyon. Jumping things on a bicycle became all the rage. No broken bones or concussions (least wise for me), but I sure became real familiar with road rash and bent forks.

My little Sister and I were at the bottom rung of a 5 sibling family. We tended to hang together just out of mutual protection from the other three. I taught her how to fight (to win). When my Mother went to chastise her for slugging our older brother in the nuts, she told her that I was the one who told her to do it as it was the quickest way to take someone bigger than her down. Man did I get hell for that. It wasn't "Lady Like".

Idiots.

If you haven't already solved it, get one of these. First try to cut a screwdriver slot with a Dremel tool.

The last shop I worked at was owned by a gay man. For whatever reason he felt much more comfortable with women in the power positions. Very unusual in a male dominated field like lutherie but it was originally one of the unorthodox aspect that inspired me to accept the job offer. However, over time the feminized power structure was a significant problem. Lot's of gossip, they'd often gang up on a person for months at a time, then switch to a new target. It was the only time in my adult life that I experienced bullying. They were really pretty cruel with the snide insults and malicious gossip but it became the source of their bonding. I was hired by two women for my first job in a bike shop. They weren't the nastiest bosses I ever had, (that was a different woman) but they were pretty bad. They ended up regretting that they hired me, which they had done out of purely sexist reasons anyway. They did not care for men, but I taught them how to hate women too, I guess.

In Rick Perry's Texas, Firefighters Forced To Pay For Gear, Engine Fuel

WASHINGTON -- In Texas, firefighters aren't just battling the wild fires raging around Austin and Houston. The state's first responders have also had to deal with budget cuts affecting everything from fuel purchases to hoses and oxygen tanks.

In some cases, fire officials say, firefighters have had to pay out of pocket for basic necessities like proper protective gear and fuel to get them to the scene. One fire department that battled the blazes in Bastrop County had to pay for a hose, recalled Bastrop City Fire Chief Henry Perry, speaking to The Huffington Post during a break from working the wild fires.

I bet it was.

The sort of thing you describe was one of the worst problem areas with female employees at any place where I worked (and I was an HR Director, so I saw all the problems first-hand, up close and personal).

With men, the problems were more likely to be individual - drinking on the job, falsifying work reports, etc. With women, there would more than likely be one woman having difficulty with a group of other women.

I found I could very easily be drawn into these things, and it was one thing, while I was working, that I had to be very careful about - no gossiping, no getting involved with one group over another group, no making snide remarks about this or that person, etc. - to keep my perspective and impartiality, I had to maintain a distance from other employees. Leading, of course, to employees not particularly like me (which was OK, I wasn't working as part of some popularity contest).

We didn't run into too much construction. That can really put a crimp in a trip. One place we did get into one of those one lane, follow the pilot car things was in Utah, and I didn't mind because I could look around. The only thing I had seen of Utah before this was the Greyhound station in Salt Lake City at night. I've wondered if political correctness makes it difficult for HR departments to deal with that kind of thing. We have trended towards a feminized society over the past few decades. I suspect a lot of HR depts in large corporations kind of look the other way on that sort of thing.

Well, they shouldn't be.
There is a way to handle it, and it's the say way all problems are handling.

Reddit really gave these videos a boost yesterday.

145 reine.de.tout  Sat, Sep 10, 2011 4:49:44pm

And let me add, since it seems to be quiet and I can get a word in:

When people supervise other people and do some sort of job or performance evaluation they will most often focus on the employee's ability to perform the set of tasks assigned.

Most people with the right educational/experience background for a job can learn and will do their assigned tasks just fine. That's not where most workplace problems happen.

Where most workplace problems occur is with people's behavior - the receptionist who is rude to people; the mechanic who is drinking on the job; the inspector who is doing something else and falsifying his work reports, etc.

And people's behavior, and behavioral expectations for jobs, are one thing so many people forget to deal with in performance expectations and then performance evaluations. It's just as important an aspect of a job as the ability to perform the tasks.

Many of the workplace problems I've seen are people who bring in their personal baggage to the workplace. The last shop I worked at (mentioned above) was a "revenge of the nerds" type scenario. A gay guy and a couple fat chicks, who probably had a hard time in high school, suddenly found themselves in charge of a dozen male employees. I don't think they even realized they were acting out a revenge scenario.

Cost sixty dollars hope I don't run outta dough.
Told me 'bout a sex offense put him three days in jail,
Stuck in Indianapolis hope I live to tell the tale.

Can't go west, can't go East,
I'm stuck in Indianapolis, with a fuel pump that's deceased.
Ten days on the road now I'm four hours from my hometown
Is this Hell or Indianapolis, with no way to get around.

Called my girl to tell her all the trouble that I had.
First time I called her in ten days, guess that made her mad.
Far as she's concerned I'm stuck here in this Hoosier State.
Stuck in Indianapolis with no way to set things straight.

Can't go west, can't go East,
I'm stuck in Indianapolis, with a fuel pump that's deceased.
Ten days on the road now I'm four hours from my hometown
Is this Hell or Indianapolis, with no way to get around.

Sittin' in this bar is gettin' more than I can stand,
If I could catch a ride, would they think I ditched this band.
Who knows what this repair'll cost, scared to spend a dime.
I'll puke if that jukebox plays John Cougar one more time!

But if I ever leave here I hope never to return,
If I get that van back, man the road I'm gonna burn.
Right now my future's in the hands of the boys down at Firestone.
Stuck in Indianapolis, feelin' all alone.

Can't go west, can't go East,

Loves me some Bottle Rockets. One of the few bands I've never seen that I'd really like to.

Nice clip, Steve. That one's on the short list.

Tired Evening Honcos. My friend gave me a half gallon of "Moose Tracks" ice cream. So, soon, all my pains will be gone. Oh, and I have a cocktail.:)

I see some HR crap above so I'll post a story.
Worked with a guy, head of HR. He was there from day one so they gave him a cushy job. (I'm not saying HR is cushy but this one was) He wrote a letter to a 21 year old mechanic, work related. (kid is a whiz) We graded it. He got a "D" or an "F".

I'm now self employed and work at home. This is the kind of HR memo I get these days.....

So, since its been over an hour since the last post. Been rooting around over at You Tube looking up old songs I remember from my Childhood.

So much for things being "More Moral" than they are today.

Heh.

I remember that song, although the version I remember is from Dr. Hook and The Medicine Show.

Which probably tells you a bit about my childhood.

"Michel & Sven will grow up and have fine careers as American political consultants in about 30 years."
My thought too. Maybe a metaphor for electing Republican presidents from Texas...

Just for grins.

I can def relate to that. I've lost count of how many bosses act out revenge for not having the completely homogenous-looking workplace they feel entitled to. So unprofessional. The best bosses are like the best parents, who can trust their own managerial/parenting skills.

re: #147 Killgore Trout

Many of the workplace problems I've seen are people who bring in their personal baggage to the workplace. The last shop I worked at (mentioned above) was a "revenge of the nerds" type scenario. A gay guy and a couple fat chicks, who probably had a hard time in high school, suddenly found themselves in charge of a dozen male employees. I don't think they even realized they were acting out a revenge scenario.
