Senate Republicans Block Disaster Aid Bill

The party of blocking everything
Politics • Views: 41,031

In the latest demonstration of the GOP’s concern for the well-being of the American people, Senate Republicans have blocked a disaster aid bill to replenish FEMA’s funding.

Republicans blocked an effort Monday by Senate Democrats to quickly pass a $7 billion aid package for victims of recent natural disasters like Hurricane Irene, tornadoes in the Midwest and the South and floods along the Mississippi, Missouri and other rivers.

On a 53-33 vote, the Senate rejected an attempt by Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., to bring up a bill that Democrats had hoped to use to replenish the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s depleted disaster fund. Democrats needed 60 votes to advance the measure.

Don’t worry, disasters never happen in red states, do they? Soon they’ll remember why this is such a rancid position.

5 Sol Berdinowitz  Tue, Sep 13, 2011 11:37:38am

Government cannot afford to spend any more money on anything else. Period. As soon as we get that through our heads, the GOP positions on spending become clear. The suffering of a a few hundred thousands is nothing compared to the cost of violating ideological principles that guide our nation.

Earlier Monday, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., said Republicans will attach a disaster aid package to must-pass legislation for keeping the government fully running past Sept. 30. That stopgap spending bill is likely to advance next week.

So it looks like they’re going to tie FEMA funding to moving the goalposts on promised spending….
John Boehner tries to cut deeper on 2012 funds

Instead of the agreed-upon appropriations target of $1.043 trillion, a stopgap continuing resolution or CR this week would be calibrated at a lower $1.035 trillion level. The idea – promoted by Speaker John Boehner — was to effectively withhold about $8 billion for the first two months of the fiscal year, with the money becoming available only as Senate Democrats come to terms with the House on the dozen annual spending bills that cover government operations.

18 simoom  Tue, Sep 13, 2011 11:43:59am

I wish the media wouldn’t report it this way, like 60 votes is the default:

On a 53-33 vote, the Senate rejected an attempt by Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., to bring up a bill that Democrats had hoped to use to replenish the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s depleted disaster fund. Democrats needed 60 votes to advance the measure.

The reason there’s never any need for the GOP to justify their obstruction is because the media sells it to the public as perfectly normal.

33 lawhawk  Tue, Sep 13, 2011 11:49:49am

Just remember that if your state governor doesn’t get those disaster declarations in, they can’t get the federal aid and assistance, and that includes the Gulf Coast states hit by TS Lee, Texas and the wildfires, the East Coast states from Irene and Lee, and any other natural disasters that occur every year that give no regard to borders or political affiliations.

The failure to pass the aid package is an abdication of the Congressional GOP to do their duty to provide aid to the states and the residents of those states.

Just remember that when those who are crying loudest for cutting spending before passing this package will be first to have their hands out if their own districts are affected by a natural disaster.

Pass the damned aid package. Heck, you’ve got GOP governors like Christie who are going against the Congressional GOP, and some GOPers from affected states are starting to feel the pressure to get the aid done - and are starting to lean on the leadership.

Michele Bachmann: U.S. Immigration ‘Worked Very, Very Well’ Under The Asian Exclusion Act

In 1924, Congress passed a package of immigration laws — including the National Origins Act and the Asian Exclusion Act — establishing a quota system giving preferential treatment to European immigrants. Under these laws, the number of immigrants who could be admitted from a given country was capped at a percentage of the number of people from that nation who were living in the United States in 1890. Because Americans were overwhelmingly of European descent in 1890, the practical effect of these laws was an enormous thumb on the scale encouraging white immigration.
These quotas were eliminated by the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, an act which is widely credited for opening up our nation to new Americans of Asian and Central and South American descent. At last night’s CNN/Tea Party Republican presidential candidates’ debate, however, Bachmann claimed this decision to eliminate our past, misguided immigration policy was a big mistake.

If he isn’t pushing for that aid, then he isn’t doing his own job, let alone acting Presidential (you know, like character and fitness to serve as President).

I checked the FDA site on adverse effects from the vaccination, and they note seizures and blood clots have been reported; the warning label provides as much.

The VAERS reports simply report all adverse effects following vaccination, regardless of causality or correlation:

Serious adverse event reports

Any VAERS report that indicated hospitalization, permanent disability, life-threatening illness, congenital anomaly or death is classified as serious. As with all VAERS reports, serious events may or may not have been caused by the vaccine.
Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS)

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) has been reported after vaccination with Gardasil® . GBS is a rare neurologic disorder that causes muscle weakness. It occurs in 1-2 out of every 100,000 people in their teens. A number of infections have been associated with GBS. There has been no indication that Gardasil® increases the rate of GBS above the rate expected in the general population, whether or not they were vaccinated.
Blood Clots

There have been some reports of blood clots in females after receiving Gardasil®. These clots have occurred in the heart, lungs, and legs. Most of these people had a risk of getting blood clots, such as taking oral contraceptives (the birth control pill), smoking, obesity, and other risk factors.
Deaths

As of June 22, 2011 there have been a total 68 VAERS reports of death among those who have received Gardasil® . There were 54 reports among females, 3 were among males, and 11 were reports of unknown gender. Thirty two of the total death reports have been confirmed and 36 remain unconfirmed due to no identifiable patient information in the report such as a name and contact information to confirm the report. A death report is confirmed (verified) after a medical doctor reviews the report and any associated records. In the 32 reports confirmed, there was no unusual pattern or clustering to the deaths that would suggest that they were caused by the vaccine and some reports indicated a cause of death unrelated to vaccination.

Stroke (relating to blood clots) might be a possibility for the Bachmann-related case, but without more specifics, there’s no way to say the vaccine caused the mental defects claimed.

That law also excluded Jews (like the passengers on the St. Louis), who ultimately became victims of the Holocaust.

Many of them had their roots among bigots/confederates/conservatives on the west coast.

Anti-Alien Act from 1862 (i.e. Civil War era)

and 1913

The Magnuson Act repealed the 1862 Exclusion Act, but left the quotas/limits of the Immigration Act of 1924 intact, which was not repealed until 1965.

These morally incompetent dumbshit conservatives like Bachmann know they cannot compete on a level playing field, and need the government to enforce anti-minority laws that hold others back so they can prosper.

re: #80 lawhawk

I checked the FDA site on adverse effects from the vaccination, and they note seizures and blood clots have been reported; the warning label provides as much.

The VAERS reports simply report all adverse effects following vaccination, regardless of causality or correlation:

Stroke (relating to blood clots) might be a possibility for the Bachmann-related case, but without more specifics, there’s no way to say the vaccine caused the mental defects claimed.

My only remaining question is when exactly was Michele Bachmann vaccinated…?

Among the damaged areas in NY was part of the historic Erie Canal in the Capital District. This includes flood control facilities, locks, and it has pretty much shut down the Canal operations for the rest of the year.

The canal is indefinitely closed between Waterford and Utica. Heavy rains from tropical storms Irene and Lee caused flooding at five locks, from Vischer Ferry in Clifton Park to just west of Amsterdam, when the rising waters ripped open dams and reshaped the shoreline.

Touring damaged Lock 11 in Amsterdam on Monday, Canal Corp. Director Brian U. Stratton and his deputy, John Callaghan, showed U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer where floodwaters knocked out vertical steel support beams in the middle of the dam — which are designed to pop out like ski bindings, preserving the larger structure. In many places, water jumped the river’s banks and “scoured” new channels around the concrete locks.

“They’re now in the middle of the river,” said Callaghan, noting waters haven’t receded at locks 9 and 10, just east.

“We have to move the locks back?” Schumer asked.

“No,” Callaghan replied. “We’ve got to move the river back.”

And until they can accomplish that, Canal Corp. officials say they won’t even be able to fully assess the damage to the system. Work crews have put in fresh fill where they can but are waiting for water levels to finally recede before inspecting dams contorted or blown by rushing water and debris. Lee’s rains fell Thursday, but it could be at least Tuesday before levels drop low enough, Stratton explained.

In less than an hour, the Senate will try to bring the disaster relief package to the floor for a vote.

The supplemental monies include $1.3 billion for the Army Corps of Engineers, which helps repair water-damaged infrastructure; $266 million in fiscal year 2012 to the Department of Agriculture; $135 million in fiscal year 2012 for the Economic Development Administration; and $100 million in community block grants to help rebuild neighborhoods damaged by natural disasters.

A measure that passed this summer to raise the debt ceiling included federal spending caps; that deal allowed for those caps to grow to accommodate emergency disaster aid.

On Monday evening, a procedural vote on the Burma bill failed in the Senate with six Democrats missing. Some members were taken aback that the funding request was bigger than the previous White House request, or because they were not up to speed on the details. The $4.6 billion that Senate Democrats seek for the 2012 fiscal year is above the $1.8 billion President Obama requested in February.

I’m seriously beyond grateful that my family pushed for me to get a living will, a durable general power of attorney, and a medical power of attorney for my mom last year, and that her lawyer made sure that we got them all drawn up and signed.

She’s been having a lot of health problems and memory issues lately. If I had to get any of those documents now, I don’t know that she’d be able to freely consent to them. Last year, she was able to just fine.

The discussers were all unmarried. The married people in the office were quietly giving each other that look. “They don’t get it, do they?”

Another VERY IMPORTANT document is the Do Not Resuscitate (DNR). Put a copy on your fridge, your bedroom door, above your bed, in your wallet, glove box (have it tatooed on your forhead) EVERYWHERE. If the EMS teams are not completely sure of your intentions, they will do everything to bring you back and keep you alive.

Same when you get to the hospital. The Triage Nurses didn’t ask my dad, or the Paramedics. I had to present it to the Doctor myself.

Make sure your loved ones have a copy and make sure they are vigilent about YOUR WISHES.

My dad would have killed me, sued the hospital and probably have waged holy war if he died and they brought him back. He was miserable with his health problems and was at peace with G-d. He made his intentions very clear.

It probably depends on the State. When my BIL was DOA, his wife asked the EMS team to do all they could (she is a kind & naive person) and that was enough for them to violate the DNR.

He remaining months were pure torture. They couldn’t do in GITMO what they did to him to keep him alive.

Pennsylvania GOPers Propose Splitting State’s Electoral Votes

Pennsylvania Republicans, who won the governorship and full majority control of the legislature in 2010, are now setting their sites on a major change — to the state’s Electoral College votes, which have been regularly won statewide by Democrats for 20 years, in the winner-take-all system used by nearly all the states.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Gov. Tom Corbett and state Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi are proposing that the state divide up its Electoral College votes according to which candidates carried each Congressional district, plus two votes for the statewide winner. The system is used by Maine — which, despite the system, has never actually split its four electoral votes — and by Nebraska, which gave one of its five votes to Barack Obama in 2008.

Pennsylvania, however, will have 20 electoral votes in the 2012 election. What’s more, the measure would give even greater meaning to the state’s redistricting for the House of Representatives, giving it a powerful effect over the presidency in addition to the House.

Pennsylvania has voted Democratic in every presidential election since 1992, and voted for Barack Obama by 55%-44% in 2008. Indeed, over the past 50 years it has only voted Republican in presidential landslides for the GOP: 1972, 1980, 1984, and finally 1988. While the results have sometimes been narrow for the Dems, it is a state that can be expected to vote Democratic for president in the context of a close national campaign, such as its votes for Al Gore in 2000 and John Kerry in 2004.

OT:
Zawahiri has crawled out from under his rock (or crash pad in Pakistan), to claim that the Arab Spring was a rebuke of the US, even as the Arabs who rose up against those regimes haven’t exactly embraced al Qaeda’s jihadist bent and move towards extremism.

Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri has apparently released a new message to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, in which he praises the Arab Spring as a “devastating blow” to the United States.

The hour-long video, posted Monday on websites run by supporters of the terror network, includes an audio broadcast purportedly from al-Zawahiri and a video message from Osama bin Laden, recorded before his death in May.”

Al-Zawahiri’s speech lauds the Arab Spring as having “liberated thousands of the members of the Islamic movement’s prisoners, who were imprisoned by direct orders from America.”

It’s a trend for many conservatives. Let’s disenfranchise people who don’t vote the way we like. Coulter a few years ago called for disenfranchising college students 18-21 and then there was the columnist not that long ago who compared giving the poor the right to vote to giving a burglar tools but remember people it’s the liberals who are the elitists not the conservatives who want to tell the poor and young they can’t vote because they vote Democratic as a bloc.

The Heritage Foundation issued a report on the ungrateful American poor that’s making the rounds on wingnuts sites….
Understanding Poverty in the United States: Surprising Facts About America’s Poor

80 percent of poor households have air conditioning. In 1970, only 36 percent of the entire U.S. population enjoyed air conditioning.
92 percent of poor households have a microwave.
Nearly three-fourths have a car or truck, and 31 percent have two or more cars or trucks.
Nearly two-thirds have cable or satellite TV.
Two-thirds have at least one DVD player, and 70 percent have a VCR.
Half have a personal computer, and one in seven have two or more computers.
More than half of poor families with children have a video game system, such as an Xbox or PlayStation.
43 percent have Internet access.
One-third have a wide-screen plasma or LCD TV.
One-fourth have a digital video recorder system, such as a TiVo.

And something that actually would erode Pennsylvania’s future importance in elections. Once it becomes clear the state will start splitting electoral votes 12-8 or 11-9 every election regardless of money and time spent there the state becomes roughly the same value as carrying Rhode Island.

And since gerrymandering tends to build “safe” districts for both parties the redistricting efforts will push towards this effect as well.

GOP complaining that Obama is trying to reduce too much debt

“By asking the Joint Select Committee to increase the $1.5 trillion target to cover the full cost of his plan, the president is essentially tasking a committee designed to reduce the deficit to pay for yet another round of stimulus,” the committee’s co-chair, Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) said in a statement last week. “This proposal would make the already-arduous challenge of finding bipartisan agreement on deficit reduction nearly impossible.”

In an ironic twist, this has Washington’s career fiscal hawks, who have found common cause with the GOP for the past year, calling nonsense.

“I can tell you the more comprehensive we made it, the easier our job got, the easier it was to get to majority…rather than trying to do little teeny pieces of it,” said Erskine Bowles, co-chair of the White House’s commission on fiscal responsibility, at an event hosted by the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB).

“The tougher we made our proposal, the more people came aboard, I think the same thing can happen with this Super Commission [sic],” said Bowles’ co-chair Alan Simpson.
Talking Points Memo on Facebook

The Simpson-Bowles plan was never officially reported to Congress, but did garner support of 11 of the commission’s 18 members. This counter-evidence illustrates a political bind Republicans have created for themselves. They don’t want to raise taxes and they don’t want to create space in the budget for Obama’s jobs plan, so they have to artificially constrain the Super Committee’s goals to avoid both. This isn’t necessary, and, according to Bowles and Simpson, it’s actually counterproductive.

I would guess a flatscreen TV these days is about $300. Individual health insurance costs me about $450 every month for a single person.

BTW, it’s worth noting that the picture of George Takei as Sulu that ThinkProgress uses here works on a whole other level. Takei is a survivor of the Japanese internment camps.

Late to this segment of the conversation, but yeah, Takei rules. He did an interview about childhood in the internment camps for BBC Witness (I think). I sat in a bodega parking lot listening and tearing up. Not many celebrities I give much of a damn about, but Takei rules (and I totally want to give him and his husband a bear hug for being awesome).

Shockingly Petty: News Corp. Outlets Attack Obama Over Paper Clip

n the annals of mindless partisan sniping, this may place at the top.

This morning, Fox & Friends joined the New York Post in attacking President Obama for using a paper clip. Read that again: They attacked Obama for using a paper clip.

The Post’s story today on Obama’s jobs bill is headlined “O gives jobs ‘clip’ service; $447B ‘tax hike’ plan bound by chintzy fastener,” and its first two paragraphs attack Obama for his choice of document fasteners:

From HuffPo:

U.S. Poverty Rate Climbed To 15.1 Percent Last Year, Total Number Hit All Time Record

The U.S. unemployment rate was a little bit over 4% in 2007. It’s now hovering at or around 9%.

Does that mean that more than twice as many people suddenly became leeches over the past four years when compared with 2007?

I just don’t understand that “burden on society” mentality, and I guess I never will.

Reading a right wing blog, I see this take on the disaster aid bill:

A bill to replenish FEMA’s depleted coffers failed to advance in the Senate last night, and of course the Democrats and their media shills are decrying “partisan politics.”

…snip…

the crybabies fail to note that the House has already approved a FEMA funding bill, and it’s that bill which Senate Democrats won’t advance.

Why? Because it funds FEMA by eliminating a bunch of boondoggle electric car and green energy subsidy programs, that’s why. Think Solyndra, only on a nationwide scale. But the radical greenies won’t stand for even one of their pet projects being exposed as yet another ineffective waste of taxpayer dollars. So preening Gaia-worshipping ecowarriors and their Chevy Volt smugmobiles trump disaster assistance for average middle class New Jerseyans.

It’s in that new role that he began brainstorming about ways to find more money for street repairs, along with the water and sewer system.

“My favorite thing would be to cut the sales tax revenue that goes into parks department and the sales tax revenue that goes into the police department,” Clements said.

In turn, Clements believes the police department should teach citizens to shoot.

“As a responsible government person, if you are going to say you’re not going to pay for police services any more, it’s irresponsible to say, ‘You’re on your own, have a nice day,’” Clements said.

Lastly, Clements suggested requiring people with concealed handgun licenses to bring those guns to council meetings, to help provide security.

Well for me having a microwave available at college (and immediately post-college) led to eating a lot more vegetables (heated from frozen) and doing some experimentation with cooking fish and other meats when I did not have convenient access to and/or time with a conventional oven to cook a meal.

Though a lot of it does essentially mean using microwaves to boil water rather than the stove. (I recall poaching eggs in a microwave - which is basically simply using it to do something that can usually be done easier via conventional cooking. The whole “cult of the new” thing in action.)

Yeah, there’s been rumors about Microsoft developing Win8 as a tablet-oriented operating system for some time. Debian/Ubuntu flavors of Linux did this on their latest release with the “Unity” interface, which has been HEAVILY criticized by the primarily desktop user base, as highly unusable. Unfortunately, app development for the desktop-friendly environments on those OSes has stalled, and many apps just don’t work nearly as well as they used to.
I’ve actually had to install Win7 on my desktop system in a dual-boot capacity because of it.

About the only saving grace for Microsoft is that the current “Aero” UI just runs on top of the main Windows engine (as has been the case since Vista), so the desktop vs tablet interface for Win8 may actually work for them, if said fast-switching can be seamlessly implemented.

One reason the House bill has less funding for Democratic priorities is because, even before the hurricane, Republicans had decided that the President’s budget didn’t have enough money for the Disaster Relief Fund. So they funded it at $850 million above the President’s request. Then as they realized that the damage in places like Joplin, Missouri would put additional strain on the fund, the GOP added the amendment that provided still more disaster assistance and cut funding for Mr. Biden’s beloved electric cars.
The White House hasn’t asked for more funding, though White House budget director Jacob Lew wrote to lawmakers Thursday suggesting it could be well north of $5 billion. But so far Mr. Cantor is being blamed for opposing disaster relief because he has been trying to spend more than the President, and to place that above other spending priorities.

I’m a gadget nerd, so the iPhone was a huge step up from the Blackberry Pearl I was using at the time. When my contract at T-mobile came up, I jumped ship.

It wasn’t so bad until I lost my iPhone in the back of a cab and had to just buy what I could afford at the time, which was the Samsung Focus with WP7. I’m thinking I should have just replaced my iPhone instead, or just gotten a Droid. =P

I got Sprint once. Had them for a month, then I looked at my bill. They literally charged me for roaming during the same call because I’d gone from one side of the store I was in to the other, and that wasn’t the only call it happened for, either. My bill was something stupid like $500.

I paid them, paid the termination fees, and told them where they could put their phones.

Let’s remove the emotional attacks and paraphrase.

1) What happened after 9/11 was deeply shameful. (assumes some people capitalized on the tragedy)
2) The atrocity should have been a unifying event, but instead it became a wedge issue.
3) …Bernie Kerik, Rudy Giuliani, and, …, George W. Bush … cashed in on the horror.
4) …the attack was used to justify an unrelated war…
5) A lot of other people behaved badly. (assumes purposeful ignorance of the capitalization)
6) …professional pundits … turn[ed] a blind eye to the corruption and len[t] their support to the hijacking of the atrocity?

Which of these claims are accurate (if any) and which are inaccurate (if any)?

This, I think, will be either what shows the TPers to be a rapidly entrenching political force in Washington or that the TPers’ obstructionist maneuvers have finally become the straw that broke the camel’s back in the eyes of a majority of voters.

The VA earthquake, TS Lee, Hurricane Irene, and other associated incidents that have happened lately are fresh enough in most people’s minds and affected, in one way or another, a sizable chunk of the country’s population; I can’t see that sane, rational people would not take umbridge at this naked attempt by the GOP to hold disaster relief hostage.

At least, I hope people get mad about this…

Just got an email from my dad about Ollie North testifying about wanting to kill Osama bin Laden in 1987, but that the Senator hearing his testimony, Al Gore, disagreed. That’s right…Al Gore is the reason for 9/11…or maybe it’s just a coincidence.

It’s a well known myth. I even saw it in an urban legends book.

On our road trip, we saw people pull into McDonald’s, go in and use the bathroom, come back out and make lunch from stuff in their cooler in the trunk, and take off again.

There are more people on the road, and fewer big motor homes.

The “AC” in my room is barely working. No doubt it’s from the original construction. Can you believe a company like Motel6 that rakes in this constant flow of people can’t afford to maintain their HVAC units? What excuse to they have?

But that’s the American way. Invest in some project and then let it go to shit. We’ve done it to our cities. “It can have very dangerous side effects. The mother was crying when she came up to me last night. I didn’t know who she was before the debate. This is a very real concern, and people have to draw their own conclusion,” she said.

re: #394 windsagio

I just remember it creeping me the fuck out. She as treating required vaccinations like Rape.

Here you go:

KING: Let’s come back to the point, though. You said, especially of the HPV vaccination issue in Texas, violated liberty?

BACHMANN: Yes, of course it violates liberty, when you have innocent little 12-year-old girls that are being forced to have a government injection into their body. This is a liberty interest that violates the most deepest personal part of a little child. And it violates the parental rights, because what we understand is, again, this was an executive order that mandated that every little 12-year- old girl had to have this vaccination. And then you’d have to opt out.

Well, parents don’t necessarily have the backing — have the information, the backing to know to opt out. This should be an opt in. This is a clearly an example of overreach for government. Again, the governor admitted that this was a big mistake.

The problem is, again, a little girl doesn’t get a do over. Once they have that vaccination in their body, once it causes its damage, that little girl doesn’t have a chance to go back. So you can’t just say you’re sorry. When you’re president of the United States, you don’t get a mulligan. You don’t get a do over.

You have to get it right the first time. I have a core sense of conviction about these issues. And I never would have done that to innocent little 12-year-old girls.

Now my house smells like a really fucking good pie…only problem is, I really shouldn’t eat it since I’m trying to lose weight. So I’ll stop by a friend’s house and drop it off in the morning. Thing that bugs me about conservatives and Gore, is that 9x/10 he’s their best friend. In the long run Clinton/Gore was better for the rich than the Reagan/Bush style smash’n’grab.

You might need to elucidate that one a bit…

She got the vaccine, but it really freaked me out.

The clinton/gore did the following:

1) They kept taxes low, esp. for businesses
2) They spent a ton on the military
3) They did nothing of real import on social issues (altho they sometimes talked a good game)

It was a lot of talk about reforming things, helping the underclasses, etc etc, but a whole lot of nothing in impact. Classic opiate of the masses crap.

Reagan/Bush just dumped as much money into large corporations and the rich as quickly as they could. More possible blowback, you know?

I gotta say, I’ve been watching the political events of the past couple of days in the limited time I have, and I’m getting seriously disturbed now.

I was disturbed when nobody batted an eye that elected officials were caught baldly conspiring with robber barons. I was disturbed when an honourable law enforcement officer was attacked for doing nothing more than condemning intolerance.

Yesterday I drove past young college kids standing on a street corner loudly shouting that we should be intolerant because God himself is intolerant. ( I am neither paraphrasing nor exaggerating.) Yesterday I saw a live audience loudly cheering for the death of someone who’d done nothing wrong.

William F. Buckley once described himself as standing athwart history yelling ‘Stop!’ Now, nobody will simply stand up and declare that this is wrong. And if they did, nobody would see.

That’s wrong.

Mathews should have said, “You’re a fucking idiot! Get off my show!”

Then, when the right-wing protested and demanded an apology, he should say, “I’m sorry I hurt that fucking idiot’s feelings…but she doesn’t belong in a minivan taking kids to school, let alone serving in our government.”

Note: further demands for apology probably would drop off after the next round or two.

I wish the sarc was true. But there will be those who will believe this, regardless that those people (all) risked their lives to save a fellow man.

Just as they disregard those who risked and gave their lives on 9-11.

Sad doesn’t even come close to covering it.

I actually liked SLC, though it was more of a stopover than to explore the city proper. Red Rock Brewing Co, some interesting architecture around Mormon Square, and caught a Salt Lake Bees game, which has one of the best backdrops in baseball - the Wasatch Mts catching the evening light.

The airport rocks for getting in and out, and I’ve used it for going to Bryce, Zion and Capitol Reef, as well as to Yellowstone and Grand Teton.

The bar sucks. Especially when you have to walk from one end of the Airport to get to it. Specifically from Concourse E to Concourse A where the bar is located. Then the (higher) than normal prices.

I flew once into SLC years ago..I was supposed to go there with my Boss and his wife for the weekend for a business thing..
I missed the plane.. I drove to Richmond..Took BART to Oakland and ended up late for the plane at the Terminal..I was in total panic at the gate as they pulled away..I was begging them to come back..I was finished.. I knew it..When you piss off your boss when you are Government worker..They won’t try to fire you.. They just make your life a living hell..
So I walk over to the bar..Slump down and order the biggest Bloody Mary they would sell me at 7am in Oakland…
Then over the intercom they tell me to report to the gate immediately..
Turns out they were ready to take off when they let on some old guy going somewhere else.. So they turn around the plane and let him off and let me on.. I have never seen so many ugly looks in my life when I walked to the back off the plane all smiles.. Passed my Boss and his wife and waved hi! I guess everybody thought they turned around the plane just for me..So I played the king in the back of the plane knowing a dodged a real bullet..
/excuse me..May I have another Bloody Mary?

I’m on my 5th and final treatment for my back “issue”. In order to receive treatment injections, one must be relaxed. Doc give an rx for 6 vicodin —to get you thru. So, I dutifully take my 1 pill 1/2 hour before treatment and the one script lasted the 3 treatments. Yesterday, I dutifully took my 1 pill 1/2 hour before treatment and 45 minutes later —no effects —NONE. I took another and barely got giddy.

Pain Patches are great.. They come in 25, 50 or 100 mg strength..They last 3 days..And you know pretty much to put a new one on when you cramp in pure pain screaming out every bad word ever invented by man.. You learn to change out every 2 1/2 days.. Now never get the 100mg patches.. That stuff is so strong it’s like you are in a Yellow Submarine video all day.. *wink*

Never got much relief from those.

Ice is my friend.

Well, in there eyes, you are …

Different breed in KY. I know, My Dad is from Eastern KY!

I worked on UK/Corps of Engineers archaeology projects in the Big Sandy Valley for almost a year. The people (and the land) were cool, but screwed-over.

I was tempted to go up to Grand Teton and Yellowstone but really couldn’t afford it. It’s not too far from Denver though. Matter of finding the time again. Off season is always best though. No crowds.

you will do it…this I know
once you have a lust for the land and the people, you cannot be denied if that’s what you want…you can truck up to Yellowstone and back on a shoestring…camp…get back out of the way

Significant Rise in HPV-Related Throat Cancer in Men

Philip and Joanne Keane, of Newtown, Conn., never thought twice about having their daughters immunized against strains of the human papillomavirus that could cause cervical cancer.

“I thought it [HPV] was a women-only disease, a virus only they should worry about,” said Philip Keane. But when Keane, 52, was diagnosed with stage 4 HPV-related throat cancer, the Keane’s decided their 12-year-old son should be vaccinated too.

“You don’t want them waking up in 20 or 30 years and finding out they have stage 4 throat cancer. That’s where I am now,” said Keane.

HPV appears to be linked to a rare but treatable form of throat cancer in men that’s on an uptick. If the trend continues, the annual occurrence of HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer among men will surpass that of cervical cancer among women by the year 2020, according to a study that will be presented this week at the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s annual scientific meeting.

According to researchers, in 2004 there were nearly 4,000 to 4,500 cases of HPV-related oropharynx cancer in men and women. The number of cases is expected to double to 8,500 by 2020, with the increase occurring primarily in men.

Oh you should have smelled it up there. Fresh air and you could really smell the pine trees. Nice. I took it slow and had the sunroof open. Glad I took the detour. Interstates are boring. Last time I was at Medicine Bow was many years ago. Back when I was 16 years old.

Going thru Estes and such as you get farther east? And are you working back down to I-70, or going to stay farther north and use I-80 or US-40?

If you do the latter the Green and Yampa valleys are generally nice to go through. I’ve been over to Vernal and Dinosaur a few times when visiting my brother-in-law (who lives near Craig.)

re: #59 Lidane

Back when I actually paid attention to whatever Malkin said, I read about the rumor that it was her husband writing most of the diatribes in her blog and in the books. The allegations were that Malkin was just a ethnic woman figurehead to make the diatribes “different” from all the same crap dished out by overprivileged white guys .. like her husband.

I’d like to enter her and Coulter in a Python-esque live writing competition, to see which one can write the craziest RW bullshit in the shortest time.
