Rick Perry, Neandercon

This is one of the front runners in the GOP presidential race. Rick Perry.

This video was recorded yesterday at Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University, as Perry told a rapturous audience that he receives messages directly from God, through “supernatural events” such as rainstorms.

G-d speaks to me thru my body.

When my knee hurts, he is saying "you dumb shit, you didn't do your exercizes did you?"

If I have a sinus infection, he is saying "you dumb shit, you didn't pay attention to the allergy indicators and take your meds did you?"

If I have a cut on my finger, he is saying "you dumb shit, you weren't paying attention when you were cutting the tomatoes again, were you?"

Sadly, that is what some see as the options --Communism with Obama or Christian Sharia with the GOP.

Always seeing the extremes . . .

Funny you ask. They are kosher Catholics, but if Dorothy Day is canonized, she'll be the first known saint with an illegal abortion in her autobiography.

Perry may have pulled a W, but Louie Gohmert still managed to beat him out for the title of Dumbass of the Day with this doozy.

On a side note, the Daily Kos has been much more favorable to Obama since he introduced his jobs plan. Hopefully, this will quell some of the more idiotic voices on the left who've been talking about sitting 2012 out.

OTOH, St. Brigid is known to have been approached by one of her nuns, who found herself pregnant out of wedlock (nuns did, in fact, get married in the early Irish church, and people raised families in monastic communities.)

The young woman was distraught, so Brigid prayed with her, and she was no longer pregnant.

I have my curiousity about what the story represents, on a number of levels

Lake Travis was falling at 631.82 ft msl which is about 32.9 feet below its historic September average of 664.70 ft msl. McDuff, as usual, has to check every blade of grass, tree, pinecone and walk the fence perimeter

He started barking (again, not unusual)

he stopped barking

I went out to check after awhile.,,, he's GONE ,,,,

One of the slats of the fence got loose, popped off, and he decided to go check whats on the OTHER side of the fence

45 minutes looking through the neighborhood,, calling him,,, NADA

I get back to the house, he's sitting on the front porch looking at me as if to say "where the heel have YOU been !?!?!"

Providence... what can I say...

There are always more than one way to look at any single event.

If someone wants to interpret atmospheric phenomena as direction from God then, well, that person is doing what much of mankind has done for a very, very long time.

I think it is important to stress that Perry isn't so much different than many people but the truth is just the opposite - Rick Perry is probably very "normal" as far as Americans go.

Rick Perry believes what a great deal of Americans believe, which is why I don't discount the possibility that he could end up President.

Now, how sincere is Perry in all of these public speaking opportunities? Only he knows, but it probably doesn't matter as many people will believe him anyway.

It took a very long time for Irish Women to even partially give up their autonomy.

Brigid's heirs as Abbess at Kildare had the authority of bishops for many, many generations. And she, of course, took on the authority of the goddess of the same name.

There's a church in downtown SF, built by Irish immigrants that has a window showing her in her full symbolic regalia, holding a bishop's staff, and with fire rising out of her other hand. Oak leaves on her head. Very lovely.

The story I adore is that St. Brendan (the Navigator) visited her at Kildare, and they went for a walk and got their cloaks wet. Brigid hung hers up on a sunbeam to dry, and Brendan followed her lead, but only figured out how to do it on the third try.

He was embarassed, (early Irish saints tended to treat holiness as a sort of dance contest), but Brigid told him that being on the sea all the time in danger divided his attention, while, living a girly monastic life, she was able to stay focused on God the whole time.

My opinion of this person is that he is certainly quite intelligent. However, he seems to be using the fact that he was in the military as a cynical point, using it to get reduced cost (at least) when it comes to schooling, in addition to making himself looking more appealing for jobs. To be blunt, it looks like he wants to become a politician, and seems like the sort of person who might use people and throw them away.

Hmmm. I have friends who are hardcore right-wingers, but being young, I usually just attribute it to them thoughtlessly adopting their parents' political persuasion. This guy has made it through the AAA and is now at Harvard, so he's obviously no dummy. If he's particularly obnoxious or confrontational about politics, I'd keep my distance, but if he's an okay guy to hang out with, I'd just steer the conversation toward other areas. Who knows, maybe some time at a Liberal Elitist Indoctrination Center (TM) like Harvard will make him reconsider some of his views.

I worry about my friend. Alot.

You didn't mention that he was a dick. Based on this information, fuck that guy. Liberal, conservative, Paulbot, whatever, I wouldn't waste any of my time with some self-serving douche.

It's also the fact that this guy broke up with a close friend of mine a little while ago. She may be trying to get back together with him.

Ah. I understand about being worried about a friend.

Many folks make mistakes as to who we take up with. And things end up OK, anyhow, in the end. Either the person is better than we thought; or not, in which case we make our own decisions as to how our lives will proceed.

In other words - I'm afraid you'll have to let your friend make his (or her) own mistakes - then be there with a helping hand when (or IF) it's needed on down the road.

A grand uncle of mine (who I never met) who happened to be a Catholic priest supposedly took a woodchuck, held it underwater, and declared it fish so that it could be eaten on a Friday during Lent. But this was during the Depression in the coal country of west-central PA.

What an odd story!
There would really be no reason to do that.
If some sort of dispensation were needed, it could be gotten and there would be no need to declare a woodchuck to be a fish.

I think it is important to stress that Perry isn't so much different than many people but the truth is just the opposite - Rick Perry is probably very "normal" as far as Americans go.

Rick Perry believes what a great deal of Americans believe, which is why I don't discount the possibility that he could end up President.

The former regulations on abstinence obliged Roman Catholics starting as young as age seven, but there were many exceptions to the above regulations. Large classes of people were considered exempt from fasting and abstinence, not only the sick and those with physically demanding jobs, but also people traveling and students. The regulations were adapted to each nation, and so in most dioceses in America abstinence from meat was not required on the Friday after Thanksgiving, to accommodate any meat leftover from that US national holiday.

I thought I recalled this from my Catholic school days. There are plenty of exceptions and exemptions - while it's an amusing story, there really would have been no need to hold that poor animal underwater and declare it to be a fish.

My father's side of the family (large and Catholic) is also insane* - and it is definitely inherited. He probably did it both to mess with the family/friends he was with, and also at the same time reassure them since they brought up the issue of eating a woodchuck on a Friday during Lent, not him.

Our variant of it currently is due to my brother being a practicing vegetarian. But every so often so tasty meat has a glass of water (or other appropriate vessel) held over it so that is then under water and thus can be declared fish and eaten.

* - It was discovered by me that my mother's side was insane as well, but a more subtle sort.

Spent a lot of time in Kentucky, but that's actually off the Google. A nextdoor neighbor killed a raccoon that had two kits. The family ate the adult, and he gave the babies to his kids to raise. When they raised them, the family ate the grown raccoons. It's different there, and then.

I'm guessing this is coming from a man who knows his parish, and what they need--whether that's a technicality to cling to, or a joke that makes the situation less bleak.

I imagine he had the copy of the dispensation in his desk--but I think of my grandma, say, and how careful she was about this sort of thing--and kind of dubious when priests said flexibility was possible.

Hmmm. I have friends who are hardcore right-wingers, but being young, I usually just attribute it to them thoughtlessly adopting their parents' political persuasion.

I worked with young people before I retired and came to the conclusion that to many of them being "hardcore right-wingers" is the new macho.

Being obnoxiously snarky, racist, and callous is "cool." I often heard anti-black, latino, etc comments followed by, "I'm not racist. I just refuse to be politically correct." These same people, usually young men, were gung-ho warhawks, but they rarely had an answer when I asked them why, if they were so pro-war and anti-Muslim, didn't they enlist and serve rather than sit in a faculty-room or happy hour bar. To my mind, the lack oif a draft has allowed young Americans to talk the talk without having to walk the walk.

These tough-talking cowards rank slightly above guys of my generation who were liberals ducking and dodging the draft during the Viet Nam era and are now snarky conservatives talking tough because they are too old to serve and have no fear of their children having to serve in combat.

Again, to many, conservatism is the new macho.

Wait a minute..... did he say THIRTY INCHES OF RAIN in 24 hours? Why yes he did - at 41 secs - "On the 5th day of Aug 1978 it rained 30 inches in 24 hours..."

I don't think its possible for it to have rained 30" in 24 hours. We just got 8-10 inches from 2 tropical storms and massive flooding occurred. 30 inches of rain means its time to build an ark, not to plant more cotton. Maybe he misunderstood what God was telling him (or maybe the story is completely made up).
