Michele Bachmann (R-Mars) Doubles Down on Anti-Vaccination

Family values
Wingnuts • Views: 33,729

Michele Bachmann is still hammering away at Rick Perry’s mandated HPV vaccinations, with another new video that sounds like it was recorded in a bathroom.

Youtube Video

If you listen carefully to what Bachmann is saying (and we all know how painful that can be), she’s actually making two arguments: 1) that Rick Perry is corrupt, and was doing the bidding of the pharmaceutical lobby to profit financially and/or politically, and 2) that HPV vaccinations are immoral and contrary to “family values.”

The first argument (her “crony capitalism” talking point) is not without merit. It isn’t difficult to picture Rick Perry trading political favors with one of the richest lobbies in America. That’s what politicians do, especially Republicans.

The second argument, however, is where she reveals her true objection to the HPV vaccinations, because whether or not Perry was engaged in “crony capitalism,” the larger issue is whether the vaccinations are good public policy. It’s quite possible that Perry had selfish reasons, but I think most reasonable people would agree that it’s good to prevent the spread of cervical cancer; Perry did the right thing for the wrong reason.

It’s clever of Bachmann to try to package her attack on Rick Perry as an argument against “crony capitalism,” but Bachmann’s objection to the vaccine is clearly based on her religious right conviction that preventing consequences from STDs will encourage young people to have sex. She gives it away when she recites the “family values” mantra. Isn’t it a “family value” to try to prevent your children from dying of a horrible disease?

Michael Gerson has a piece in the Washington Post on the HPV debate, with a good comment on this sick and disturbing world view:

The objections to routine HPV vaccination cluster in a few areas. First, it is alleged that removing medical penalties for sexual contact — in this case, HPV and cervical cancer — will encourage sex. A protective shot given to a girl on the verge of sexual maturity, in this view, may be taken as permission for experimentation.

This type of argument is inherently difficult to prove or disprove. But it is unlikely that a 16-year-old making sexual choices is focused on her chances of getting a cancer that might develop 20 years in the future — a hypothetical event beyond the time horizon of the adolescent mind.

The more disturbing moral failure concerns any parent who would entertain this argument. Try to imagine a parent-daughter conversation about sexual restraint and maturity that includes the words: “Honey, I’m going to deny you a vaccine that prevents a horrible, bleeding cancer, just as a little reminder of the religious values I’ve been trying to teach you.” This would be morally monstrous. Such ethical electroshock therapy has nothing to do with cultivation of character in children. It certainly has nothing to do with Christianity, which teaches that moral rules are created for the benefit of the individual, not to punish them with preventable death.

This approach to moral education may appeal to a certain kind of conservative politician. How could it possibly appeal to a parent, conservative or otherwise?

Unfortunately, this argument absolutely does appeal to quite a few fundamentalist parents; that’s why Michele Bachmann is making it.

Not much to say about this. People are being lied to about this, and their lack of critical thinking skills, and desire to adhere to a moral code that's more flash than substance will kill a few of their children along the way.

Everyone else will look at her and see her for what she is - a religious whack-job.

Which is really inconsiderate of reality. Suppose a girl who is a virgin marries someone she thinks is a virgin, but that person had sexual contact, voluntary or otherwise, that exposed him to HPV. She can be doing everything according to Bachmann's values, yet still be punished with a horrible bleeding cancer. It's inconsiderate of reality and and one's daughters.

The game's rigged, simple as that. The coverage I heard of Boehner's 'jobs speech' I heard on CBS Radio last night would have you thinking he was president.

When the crazies are presented as level-headed policy makers and the president is marginalized to the point where it sound's like he's the one being obstructionist, I don't see how anything is going to change how screwed this country is right now.

90 Atlas Fails  Fri, Sep 16, 2011 12:37:37pm

Speaking of family values, last week I sent an email to ABC telling them to keep up the good work with Chaz Bono. I sent this email through OneMillionMoms.com (thinking it would be fitting to use their own "internet stationary," if you will, against them), and have been receiving email notifications from them ever since. Check out the latest:

Ben & Jerry's Tasteless Ice Cream Flavors

September 15, 2011

Dear bob,

Ben & Jerry's announced their newest ice cream flavor which sounds anything but appealing. Schweddy Balls is the best they could come up with. The vulgar new flavor has turned something as innocent as ice cream into something repulsive. Not exactly what you want a child asking for at the supermarket.

The name originated from a Saturday Night Live skit featuring Alec Baldwin as Pete Schweddy, owner of a holiday bakery called Season's Eatings. "There are lots of great treats this time of year," Schweddy says. "Zucchini bread, fruitcake, but the thing I most like to bring out at this time of the year are my balls."

He then explains that he sells popcorn balls, cheese balls, rum balls—balls for every taste—and the ball puns proceed for about four minutes. Ben & Jerry's chose to go with fudge-covered rum and malt balls for their flavor. The skit culminates in Baldwin stating that "No one can resist my Schweddy Balls."

In the past, Ben & Jerry's has released controversial ice creams, like a special edition of Chubby Hubby called Hubby Hubby last year which celebrated gay marriage. It seems that offending customers has become an annual tradition for Ben & Jerry's.

The ice cream is being released in a limited batch, which means it will be distributed nationwide but only for three or four months. If it proves popular, another batch might be forthcoming, but we hope not.

"The name is irreverent," says Ben & Jerry's spokesman Sean Greenwood. "But we've always been about having some irreverence and having some fun ... We're not trying to offend people. Our fans get the humor."

TAKE ACTION

Please send Ben & Jerry's Public Relations Manager, Sean Greenwood, an email letter requesting that no additional Schweddy Balls ice cream be distributed. Also, highly recommend they refrain from producing another batch with this name or any other offensive names or you will no longer be able to purchase their products.

Send Your Letter Now!

Sincerely,

Monica Cole, Director
OneMillionMoms.com

If the HPV vaccine makes you want to have sex, why doesn't the tetanus vaccine make you want to roll around on a pile of rusty nails?

Atheist group to rip Bible pages in H.B. Saturday

Members of a grassroots atheist group say they will tear out pages of the Bible at the Huntington Beach pier Saturday to point out what they say is immorality in the book many Christians base their faith on.

Backyard Skeptics members plan to rip out pages with specific passages of the Bible that they say portray immoral biblical law, organizers say.

“We’re not there to burn the Bible or desecrate,” Bruce Gleason, director of Backyard Skeptics, said. “There are plenty verses in the Bible that if you did any of those things today, you’d be thrown in jail immediately.”

Bachmann's view on this is nuclear stupid. HPV can be spread *without* sex, by fooling around, by oral sex, possibly even by kissing. It could even be spread by non-sexual skin-to-skin contact.

In other words, you could have two people go their wedding bed as unsullied virgins and they would still get HPV.

The HPV vaccine takes away all the consequences of sex. How will we ever keep our teenage daughters from becoming the town whore if we can't scare them by saying that sex will give them cancer?

Depending on the video genre -I have some experience with that. Wireless (I have a Sony) can be subject to interference, like fluorescent lights have forced me to go back to a wired lavalier. Or consider a camera mic., which will be an investment I make pretty soon myself for my D7 SLR.

The first argument (her “crony capitalism” talking point) is not without merit. It isn’t difficult to picture Rick Perry trading political favors with one of the richest lobbies in America. That’s what politicians do, especially Republicans.

I imagine it could also be merely a case of sour grapes from a losing candidate, but it's from PolitiFact, and they rate it as "Mostly True." Your mileage may vary.

I got noticed by someone who claims to be a director of communications from the Heartland institute on my page:

Ivar Giaever's links to Exxon Mobil, Heartland, Cato etc...

As a paid propagandist, his response to me is full of any number of lies and projections - including a link to a bogus 400 page report that they produced - and which was widely repudiated by the legitimate scientific community.

I just saw this and I need to get ready for Shabbos. Taking apart his propaganda will be an essay worth carefully writing. It will need to be full of links and references. The man, if he is who he claims to be, is someone who works for the bad guys and lies professionally about all manner of topics.

I shall of course make this into a page.

It is not clear to me though if I have the time to do so before sundown and honestly, I should not hurry a response. I want the response to have no holes in it.

Stay posted. LGF is going to get even more interesting in the coming days.

Praying in Paris streets outlawed

Praying in the streets of Paris is against the law starting Friday, after the interior minister warned that police will use force if Muslims, and those of any other faith, disobey the new rule to keep the French capital's public spaces secular.

I guess this is at the heart of the matter:

Yesterday, Mr Guéant said the prayer problem was limited to two roads in the Goutte d'Or district of Paris's eastern 19th arrondissement, where "more than a thousand" people blocked the street every Friday.

However, a stroll through several districts in Paris on a Friday suggests that Muslims spill into the streets outside many mosques.

Under an agreement signed this week, believers will be able to use the premises of a vast nearby fire station while awaiting the construction of a bigger mosque.

[Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]

How much do they pay the people at their conferences?

Come on communications director, how much do you pay them? How much is a paper worth? How much grant money do you hand out to those whose "research you are grateful for?"

You said yourself you were grateful for them... How grateful are you?

I'll have you know that in general, going to an actual science conference is paid for out of your grant (as in your own research groups funds). So I am curious how much are they paying.

Well Shabbos is rolling in. This is not over. I shall have to make a very large page out of this. I will pay special attention to his 400 page report (as in pack of lies) and his assertion that Heartland doesn't say that cigarettes don't cause cancer (no they just use Richard Lindzen who says that as an expert)!

This fellow will find that when people like him step out of the echo chamber into a place where people know a little about science they get shown to be the fools and propagandists they are, and that their many lies and obfuscations simply will not fly.

I wish everyone a Good Shabbos (if in the Tribe) and a great weekend to all in any case. See you on the flip side.

Big doings with the Big 12

By this time next week, there might not BE one for next season, huh?

That is just about what everyone is talking about around here..And Florida State Saturday night.. I'm going to a big OU party and BBQ..
I am watching the OU preview right now.. I can't hang around so many Country boys that love their OU football..
When I say something about the team I don't want them rolling their eyes...' Don't let Manual beat you with his feet' I'm memorizing here

This type of argument is inherently difficult to prove or disprove. But it is unlikely that a 16-year-old making sexual choices is focused on her chances of getting a cancer that might develop 20 years in the future — a hypothetical event beyond the time horizon of the adolescent mind.

Actually a lot of teens are really mature.

But the ones that aren't might need the vaccination.

And the argument really is about how intrusive the government ought to be.

The "religious" aspect of the argument muddies the water if you ask me.

Speaking of lack of humor,,, remember when comedians were ,,, oh,, I dunno,, FUNNY!!

[Link: www.thelocal.de...]

German comedian Martin Sonneborn is well-known for jokes bordering on the tasteless. But a satirical political billboard of him posing in blackface makeup as US President Barack Obama is sparking outrage.
Dillweed

Meh, I saw the headline earlier and didn't think much of it. He's a comedian and seems to be making a satirical point. If he was a politician or pundit advancing a political agenda then it would be different. The Germans and Dutch have a weird thing about blackface and 1920's style depictions of blacks that I've never really understood. As of about 10 years ago Little Sambo type dolls and figures were common sights in souvenir shops. I'm not sure they have the same understanding of the images as we do.
There's also Black Peter (a character in blackface) that is Santa's helper (sort of) in that part of the world.

If you give a hundred boxes of nice gray bathroom tile to our Habitat affilliate, we sell it. It doesn't fit the well-thought-out houses we build. The money goes into the operating fund. The Mother Teresa stories need documentation.

Early in the 20th century, the head of a Utah copper mine gave 1,000 silver dollars in a copper chest to the head of the LDS church for him to use to continue to do his good works.

The church head made the silver dollars into paperweights and sold them for $100 apiece. Now he had $100,000. The money founded Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City.

So the question is: if the items were sold, where did the money end up?

But Tahir Della a spokesman for the Initiative for Black Germans (ISD), which tries to represent the interests of the black community in Germany, called the billboard "unbelievably hurtful."

"This is 2011 and not 1950," he said. "I find it racist through and through."

Me too

NO. This is not about how mature teenagers are when they are teenagers. About a quarter of U.S. women carry HPV. This stuff is everywhere. Behavior that is perfectly mature and responsible, in your twenties and thirties and onward, can still get you infected. And it has to be done before the mid-20s. It makes no sense at all to say that only teenagers who might have sex as teenagers need to be immunized.

The question of government control is a real one--and both lefties and righties were pissed at Perry over it--but Bachmann is indeed muddying the waters, by giving a louder and more public voice to the people who a. are lying about the side effects of the drug and b. loudly pretending that immunizing children against a disease is bad for public morality.

I have never met such passionate Fans than here.. They live and die for their team.. When I say passion.. I don't mean violent fans..Fights that break out during and after games...I mean true excited fans.. It's a beautiful thing...
You know you are in sports country when you are sitting next to a grandma at a sports bar and she is bitching about the lateral speed of some LB named Lewis..

John Boehner’s misfire on pending federal regulations

The Pinocchio Test

Boehner left the distinct impression that 219 new regulations were hanging like a Sword of Damocles over the U.S. economy. But it turns out the number of potential regulations is inflated, as well as the potential impact. Many of the regulations may turn out to have substantial costs, but others could have benefits, as a report on the speaker’s Web site makes clear. Boehner wins points for admitting he may have overstated his case, but overall his statement contained significant factual errors.

It'll pick up in a couple of days. The thing with the UN & Palestinian statehood is only four days away. It'll probably get fast & furious here then.

It seems like the vast majority of the Israel/Palestinian content these days has been found in the pages. Although it is a big enough story that even if there isn't a specific post about it in the main blog, the discussion will spill over. I've actually been meaning to do some reading on the issue because I dont understand it entirely yet.

Good luck with that. I've been reading on it for a while now as time permits and I still don't understand it very well.

This differentiates her from other saints how exactly? Joan of Arc was excommunicated before the Church made her a saint for purely political reasons. To me the idea of arguing who is and is not deserving of sainthood is a laughably pointless exercise.

I apologize for being late but, in case anyone reads, you missed my points entirely. The first post was to comment on what Hitchens said, and the reference to "saint" was meant in the common meaning of someone uncommonly good, meaning looking after live people's welfare, not those in the afterlife (as imagined).

My second post that you quoted had nothing to do with sainthood.

My external IP should be, Charles: 119.39.226.83. That's the external IP of my university, and AFAIK it's static.

If the bots are coming from that IP, I promise it ain't me.

This is an inane argument (not that you made it). It has nothing about sexual choices at all, adolescent or not.

Firstly, it is not entirely sexually transmitted. Secondly if it is sexual, nobody should marry anyone who is not a virgin, of either sex.

Suddenly there are Chinese bots all over the place. Now online: 4,670? I don't think so. More like a series of Hong Kong-based IPs crawling through the whole site as fast as possible.

If we didn't have a couple of LGF readers in China I'd just block the whole freaking continent. It's ridiculous how much spamming and illicit activity originates in China.

I blocked the whole continent for spam long ago, however I do point out that the only genuine Chinese spam coming from there is either in Chinese characters or such bad English it's funny. The rest originates mostly right here from fellow Americans, bounced via China (and elsewhere).

I used to waste a lot of time tracing this crap.

Michele Bachmann's banal, nonsensical rhetoric is 40% demagoguery, 20% paranoid delusion, and 40% the result of being an ignorant dumbsh*t.

Bachmann and Palin share fundamental character flaws -- both have a propensity toward making snide, petty comments about those with whom they disagree, neither does her homework before making public comments regarding important science-related issues, societal topics, and historical events, and neither is mature enough to accept responsibility for her own mistakes, failures, and shortcomings.
