If Harry Potter could teach witchcraft, there'd be a lot fewer middle school nerds being jammed into lockers and a lot more middle school jocks being turned into frogs.

If these dunderheads had even an ounce of insight, they'd realize that Harry Potter was a standard good vs. evil series, with good triumphing in the end. In this sense, it's like Lord of the Rings or Narnia, only with heavy-handed WWII allegory as opposed to heavy-handed Biblical allegory.

Lewis has been challenged and banned, actually. Not all Christians are wild about what he does, and the further you go into the whackosphere, the less happy they are about him.

As for Harry as Christ figure, I sort of wish Rowling had given the low-hanging fruit of symbolism a pass--I didn't care for how she finally handled it. But whatever. It's an excellent series.

Do schools really sort students into houses? If so, does a magical talking hat do the sorting? I'd never heard of anything like that 'til I read HP, but I went to a public school in the rust belt, so my experience with education is limited.

Traditional English boarding schools do sort students into houses in a vaguely similar manner, but without the talking hat. It's basically a way of breaking students into manageable groups--everyone who shares a dorm eats together, and know each other, and specific adults can be in charge of making sure they're all accounted for.

My concern about the Hogwarts method...oh hell, you can read the whole thing here if you're so inclined.

Other than that, suffice it to say that I think that putting all the children of the magical fascists into one house together, and encouraging them to be loyal to one another = a very poor idea.

The only song in Super Bowl history that ever made sense

50 elizajane  Fri, Sep 16, 2011 5:32:16pm

The notion that the greatest threats our nation faces are a fictional magician and a benign renaissance philosophy fills me with a sense of peace and joy, and suggests that our defense budget really is over-inflated. It's kind of like listening to the Republican debate and realizing that the biggest political issue today is whether or not kids should get their shots for school, and whether we should torture fire Ben Bernanke.
It's wonderful! This country clearly has no serious problems at all!

The wife most folks remember is Batsheva (Bathsheba in the trad. anglicization). She was married to someone else. He slept with her anyway. She got pregnant. He had to figure out a way to make her husband disappear.

King Solomon's parents, ladies and gentleman. Perhaps you get to be 'the wisest of men' by watching the adult all around you make terrible mistakes.

But there were seven or eight wives, depending on how you count Avishag, and an unspecified number of concubines. And endless scandal and struggle with the children. And of course, the never-settled, always interesting speculation on what the precise nature of his relationship with Jonathan was.

From the article:

“The guy lost control, shot straight up into the air and came down into the people,” Echeverria said. “It hit full force, full throttle.”

The plane did not explode but “just disintegrated into debris,” Echeverria said. “There’s a huge crater where it hit.”

You could be right. I'm not very well informed when it comes to airplanes.

KOLO TV confirms that it was Jimmy Leeward, and that he did not survive. RIP

Dude was 80 years old. I admire him for chasing his passion but perhaps he wasn't up to pulling sustained G forces anymore, shouldn't have been up there.

I wonder if it was "natural", e.g. like he had a stroke or heart attack or something.

According to what I'm hearing on TV, he was issuing a mayday prior to the crash and was attempting to pull up, so I'm not entirely sure age was key factor. The description quoted sounds like the Mustang pulled into a zoom climb, reached the top, nosed-over, and came straight down.

I know it's not the best indicator, but the guy looked pretty hearty for 80 years old. Could have been a sudden health problem or mechanical failure.

A P-51 is powerful.
A P-51 modified to race is crazy.

I dont know if this is true but one man said this

Mike Williams of Arizona said there appeared to be an explosion in the sky before the incident happened.

"It looked like he was doing everything he could to salvage the situation, he said.

"It was a freak accident, that's not normal," he said.

In fairness I'm also guilty of speculating, it could be mechanical and the pilot's age might be totally irrelevant. One things for sure though, this is not how he wanted to be remembered.

We're not talking something that just came off the factory floor, we're talking aircraft that have been restored more than once in their lives. Could be any of a number of items that were overlooked or were handled incorrectly.

An "explosion" changes things. It could be he did purposefully pull into a climb, but lost his engine mid-climb. The description earlier of "full throttle" may be simply of the speed he had coming into the ground rather than engine power. And it's been reported that he was trying to pull up just before he hit, which would be difficult if not impossible in a straight dive with no engine.

True, which is what makes the "explosion" so mystifying. Perhaps it was a report in error, I have no clue. Figure we'll learn more in the next few hours/days.

I agree with him that some of America is turning away from God and blowhards like Hagee and other preachers like him preaching hate are the cause of some of it.

I really love it. I pick at it--especially from a teacher's perspective. (The house system is a terrible idea.) But it's really wonderful reading, and the movies are beautiful.

Houses are SOP in British boarding schools. They're also common in Commonwealth schools, at least they are in South Africa. I have mixed feelings about the houses.

Harry Potter is about a lot of people that I would like for my children to aspire to be like.

Brave, kind, intelligent, admiration for intelligence, willing to take a stand (Neville Longbottom was my hero in the series), wisdom.

Hagee in this respect? He's Voldemort.

131 Bulworth  Mon, Sep 19, 2011 9:01:20am

I'll just say that in Fundy world, citing HP and secular humanism as the causes of American ruin is what passes for "courage", "standing for something" and "absolute truth" telling.

I'm still amazed at how many otherwise intelligent people suck this stuff up.
