Video: Andrew Breitbart Fantasizes About Killing Liberals

‘We outnumber them and we have the guns’
LGF • Views: 44,619

Speaking at a Tea Party gathering in Boston, Andrew Breitbart fantasizes about armed conflict with his fellow Americans.

Breitbart, Bring it on:

Youtube Video

“They can only win a rhetorical or propaganda war. We outnumber them and we have the guns.”

(Audience laughs)

“I’m not kidding.”

He elaborates that he imagines the military is going to rise up and start killing union members to protect the country (or something), and reiterates that he’s talking about actual armed conflict and not elections.

The numbers are in our favor:

The neo-confederates have the same fantasies as their ancestors did.

Alas, for them, the end result would be the same.

I wonder how shocked he'll be to discover his side isn't the the only side packing heat. Now that's a fantasy...go on, And, start that war. Oh, right, you're a wuss with a big freaking mouth.

I thought this was the most interesting statement, 1st video, 0:55 mark:

And I have people who come up to me, in the military, major names people in the military, who grab me and they go 'thank you for what you're doing, we've got your back'.

So in Breitbart's mind, military personell cannot compliment some political activist with an expression of personal support without implicitly suggesting militant support in the case of a civil war?

Oh, but that's right: It will never have to come to that since the Lefties know about this support and thus don't dare to make the first move they would otherwise love to make in this civil war Breitbart dreams about. Civil war averted, thanks to the military being conservative?

Sounds to me that the times that Breitbart is not thinking as clearly as he knows he should are more persistent than he would like to admit.

re: #7 funky chicken

Doesn't this also mean that if a military person A supports a political activist X and a military person B supports a political activist Y, and X and Y hold diametrically opposed view points to the extend of civil war differences, then at least one military person has implictly commited treason through their support?

I bet Breitbart would love for the USA to look more like Turkey: religious conservative government and a strong military "protecting" the political institutions and occassionally taking things over when affairs become too leftish.

No. He'd rather a government like Pinochet's that actively hunts down and murders anyone who isn't his idea of politically correct.

10 Idle Drifter  Sat, Sep 17, 2011 11:12:42am

I've heard these Civil War fantasies before from the "the SOUTH SHALL RISE AGAIN!" nonsense to this crap Breitbart is spewing a thousand times before. And like before our actual Civil War between the states, that got it's first taste for blood during Bleeding Kansas, every idiot thinks going into 2nd Civil War is a good idea forgets the human cost of the first one and the period of reconstruction.

Hopefully it's mostly chest beating.

Indeed. You hear it at least once a week, some voice popping up that the military is just looking for an excuse to rise up, stage a coup against Obama for his "unconstitutional actions," and (in every case) turn it over to the "right people."

Then I look at all the military coups in past history and wonder where they get these ideas. If a military is going to engage in treason, why would they turn around and turn over power to the very people who could have them executed for said treason?

Such a stupid thing to say. In a world of Really Big Military Type Weapons and information technology, the only thing having your own firearm is good for is defending your home, your life and your family, and hunting.

It would be difficult to overtake a country with civilian arms, IIRC.

Well, it's a part of the fantasy that needs something holding it up. We can quote Thomas Jefferson all we want, but an armed revolt in this country would be ended abruptly by a very large, very well-trained military. 'Tain't no doubt.

So the best way to make the fantasy work is to assure your listeners that that military would HELP them, if push came to shove.

Heh, come to think of it, this kind of reminds me of what the publisher of this little magazine I subscribe to wrote in his editorial in the latest issue (audio, read by himself)... translated from German:

To understand the looting of stores for clothes and electronics as a form of protest, rebellion, or even initial stages of a revolution, would be as dumb as to impute the Taliban or Hamas with emancipatory tendencies. But one can glance from the marvellous successes of diverse armies in Afghanistan, in Iraq, in Northern Africa, and perhaps soon in Syria, how little the Camerons and Brattons – maybe soon enforced by veterans from Kandahar – will improve the conditions in Tottenham. They will get exacerbated, like those in France's banlieues, in Madrid, and in Rome, exactly by a multitude of the percentage by which welfare will be cut. If the next President of the United States belongs to the Tea Party, war will break out in Los Angeles.

It's true to some extent, and not to be overlooked, but it was said in a totally different time and a totally different situation.

I'm one of those 'liberals'. I've spent most of my life studying violence in all its forms from hand-to-hand combat to so called 'nuclear strategy'. If you want to kill me you'd better bring lots of your Nazi pest bastard cronies because I won't go easy, or alone.

Also, you might want to count the numbers again.

This, in my opinion, shows how similar the current crop of fascists is to the last major outbreak, before and during WWII. "Our enemies are weak," they say. "Our enemies don't know how to fight," they say. "Our enemies are afraid to die," they say.

Who won that conflict?

I bet Breitbart would love for the USA to look more like Turkey: religious conservative government and a strong military "protecting" the political institutions and occassionally taking things over when affairs become too leftish.

My friend (raised in Istanbul) has complained about this very thing. Friends who still reside in Turkey tell her that police will enter dance halls and shut them down, citing obscure codes or accusing dance organizers of promoting immorality or subversive activity. Speaking of numbers:

Why Are 46 Million Americans Living in Poverty?

More than 46 million lived below the federal poverty line last year, the highest number since the census began tracking that data five decades ago.

The poverty line is lower than you might think: $11,139 a year for a single person, $22,314 a year for a family of four. The poverty rate itself is at the highest level since 1993.

That's the point. It's a biography, which implies that Fonda herself wasn't a source for anything, and the author looked elsewhere for information.

I wasn't alive during Vietnam, so all the political uproar over Jane Fonda doesn't mean a damned thing to me. When I think of her I think of all those cheesy aerobics videos of the 80's. But until I know the actual source for that claim, I'm not willing to take it at face value.

The gun and war fetishes of so many wingnuts are rather interesting. Rush, Hannity, Brietbart, and their ilk would burn their draft cards and move to Canada before actually serving in a war, but maybe they're overcompensating for some shortcoming, if you know what I mean.

The lack of a draft makes all the difference now.

The same guys who were liberals/moderates back when there was a draft, and who did everything they could to avoid military service are now the same right-wing douchebags that are the first ones to wave a gun around or clamor for war now that they're too old to serve and their kids can't be forced into a war zone.

From Wiki:

Patricia Bosworth

Patricia Bosworth (born April 24, 1933) is an American journalist and biographer. A former faculty member of the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University, she has also been an editor, actress and model.

...Changing careers to journalism afterward, she became an editor at Woman's Day and from 1969 to 1972 was senior editor of McCall's. Bosworth served as managing editor of Harper's Bazaar from 1972 to 1974, and then as executive editor of the nightlife magazine Viva from 1974 to 1976. She also freelanced for the arts section of The New York Times, as well as for national magazines, and was a contributing editor of Vanity Fair. She reviewed numerous books for The New York Times, and profiled film historian Lawrence J. Quirk for the April 1998 issue of Vanity Fair and Penthouse founder Bob Guccione for the February 2005 issue of the same magazine.

...Bosworth is the author of biographies on Montgomery Clift (1978), Diane Arbus (1984) and Marlon Brando (2000).

Her book, Montgomery Clift: A Biography tells the story of the actor, whose introverted style of acting influenced James Dean and many other performers. In researching her book, the author had total access to Clift's family and many persons who knew the actor and worked with him.

Bosworth's biography, Diane Arbus dealt with the life of the famous photographer, who committed suicide in 1971, and examines her controversial, technically innovative pictures of dwarfs, nudists and drag queens that won her a reputation as "a photographer of freaks".

According to Publishers Weekly, Bosworth's biography on Marlon Brando "offers a vivid reminder of the personal and professional highlights of Brando's life." It is "an informative biography of Brando that, because of the limited format of the Penguin Lives series, hints at but cannot do justice to the great unruliness of Brando's career and life. She provides a fine, detailed sketch of his New York days when he took acting classes with 'Harry Belafonte, Elaine Stritch, Gene Saks, Shelley Winters, Rod Steiger and Kim Stanley', and presents a great portrait of the craziness on the set of Last Tango in Paris (co-star Maria Schneider announced that they got along 'because we're both bisexual')", but in only 228 pages, the author "can't approach the complexity of her earlier work".

As of 2007, Bosworth was writing a biography of Jane Fonda. The book is set for publication in 2011.

A very interesting survey about public opinion on global warming:

[Link: environment.yale.edu...]

There's a whole lot there. Here's my favorite part:

A question on whether "most scientists" think that global warming is happening:

Democrats: 55%
Independents: 46%
Republicans: 29%
Tea Party: 10%

What does this mean? It means that only 10% if Tea Partiers have the slightest clue about what scientists think about global warming (and note, the question doesn't even refer to Anthropogenic global warming).

And I'm having an argument over at Judith Curry's website with a "conservative" who is trying to claim that "conservatives" are better informed about climate change.

Check out the survey - lots to look at.

Eventually, Jane split from Sutherland, saying she was moving into a different phase of her life and she couldn’t share it with one man. There were soon rumours that she was having liaisons with various activists.

She supposedly confided during a feminist consciousness-raising session, ‘My biggest regret is I never got to f*** Che Guevara.’

A very interesting survey about public opinion on global warming:

[Link: environment.yale.edu...]

Speaking of surveys: Public Opinion Stunner: More Americans Understand World is Warming — Thanks to Rick Perry

More Americans than last year believe the world is warming and the change is likely influenced by the Republican presidential debates, a Reuters/Ipsos poll said on Thursday.

The percentage of Americans who believe the Earth has been warming rose to 83 percent from 75 percent last year in the poll conducted Sept 8-12.

And much to the chagrin of the few people here who luv to go on about how much independents hate anything "liberal":

Interestingly, the polling shows that the biggest movement toward understanding the Earth has been warming occurred among independents, a 9.5% rise in those who believe the Earth has been warming.

Looks like the Republicans finally found a tax cut they don't support:

House GOP rejects Obama jobs proposals

House Republican leaders say they are rejecting President Barack Obama's jobs proposals to rebuild schools and blighted neighborhoods, and help keep state and local employees on the job.

In a memo to GOP lawmakers that was also issued publicly and reprinted in The New York Times, House Speaker John Boehner, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., and other Republican leaders also objected to the president's proposal for a temporary reduction in payroll taxes, in order to boost consumer spending and increase demand.

The GOP leaders say such a temporary reduction means taxes will go up later when the reduction expires in 2013.

Yeah - I saw that. Pretty funny.

But I would guess that it has more to do with the extreme weather than it does with Perry.

"Skeptics" have been trying to attribute changing views on climate change to "Climategate," even though they have no data to support that attribution. I think that it is more likely that a couple of cold winters explained changing public viewpoints.

And now I think that the recent extreme weather is having the opposite impact.

People are inclined to view climate change through a short time frame.

The poll I linked showed that Demz think that warm weather is evidence of climate trends but not cold weather, while Repubs think that cold weather is evidence of climate trends but not hot weather. Unfortunately, climate change has been a proxy for political battles - and that is the entire focus of someone like Perry. Who knows what he really thinks about climate change (or creationism, or vaccines, or anything controversial)? We'll never know. What we do know is what he thinks he can milk for political expediency - and he's definitely on board with exploiting climate denialism. Looks like that may not work out too well if we keep getting extreme weather (although a cold winter will help him out).

Amen. brother. My dad was in Guam, the Philippines, and possibly Okinawa, but I'm not sure on that last one. He died when I was a teenager and he didn't much like talking about the war, so the memories are pretty foggy—i.e. I don't know if I just heard him talk about Okinawa or if he was actually there.

I wonder if it's possible to get copies of a parent's military records. Does anyone know?

Thanks, looks like I've got what I need now. I'd love to see the records. One of my sisters had scanned a letter he sent to his sister during the war from the Philippines. It was fascinating to read a little bit of first-hand history. Unfortunately, I've managed to misplace the scans...maybe I'll look for them again this weekend.

I think it was DD214 even then. My dad's (and my) records were largely destroyed in the St Louis fire, but in the last couple years bits and pieces are showing up in the net. I found my dad's local draft call using just a name search and county of residence. I was able to recreate much of his service from that.

Yep. I remember my dad talking about how their job was to be sent onto an island where they had to clear out any dangers while the rest of the troops waited offshore. Once things were "safe" (or as safe as they can be during war) they'd light some sort of smoke bomb type flares that would send up colored smoke to let those waiting know where to go.

In that letter from the Philippines, he didn't mention any combat—IIRC he was in Manila—it mostly sounded like they went in to secure the place after the Japanese had been routed. Oddly, the one thing I do remember is something about money from the banks lying around everywhere because it was now worthless—maybe it was Japanese money?—becuase he even joked about them being bank robbers.

As noted by blueraven, the majority of the muttering from Dems I've heard over this is due to the methods proposed for paying for the bill. Some others are peeved that it's so lackluster, which is not surprising when economists have been sounding off that the Recovery Act was too small to do more than blunt the recession.

Meanwhile, the Republicans are staying to script, finding any way they can to argue against a jobs bill, against tax cuts, and generally against Obama. I never expected they were going to support this bill.

A good book I recently listened to is The Book Thief. It's a shortish, young adult novel--written from the perspective of the German Children. The war was pretty awful for them too. It does great respect to the entire situation.

There are so many books written about The War. Clint Eastwood's recent movies are good perspective as well. Somethings are better digested as "fiction" than in dry non-fiction accounts.

The Book Thief is a good novel, but it's far from shortish, the damn thing is over five hundred pages--which is a lot when you teach it to ninth graders, which I have done for two years running.

My dad had very little to say about his military service. Having to be at war AND desegregate a virulently anti-Black institution at the same time was probably a bit much.

It wasn't a losing battle.

One of the murals in a small deep-Alabama town:
Image: 06de2f32-0d88-4a4d-b87e-bdec56986bd0.jpg

Sherman Rose was a regular at our Habitat functions until his death a few years ago.

I'm seeing more allusions to armed insurrection and violence in the streets on right wing message boards and comment sections. At first I thought they were going to be the ones to fire the first shot if health care reform or some other aspect of Obama's "radical left wing agenda" passed. But they really think "The Left" (whatever that means) is actually going to strike first. They cite the SEIU non-beating of Kenneth Gladney (a Mr. Duggan if there ever was one) as an example (Breitbart and some of his bloggers actually advanced the meme that the White House was behind that non-attack!), as well as the "Civilian National Security Force" Obama wants to create (just as powerful as the US military), and even a private 6,000 man army the Health Care law supposedly created.

They didn't think there was anything crazy or wrong at all with what Sharron Angle said in re "2nd Amendment solutions," or the comments of Allen West's former chief of staff - "when ballots don't work, bullets will." These people really think liberalism is going to be imposed by brute force. At first it was amusing, but I don't know what to think now.

That's why it is crucial for all Democrats, liberals, and progressives to go vote next year, no matter how disappointed in Obama you may be. Too many Dems stayed home last year, and look who took over the House. If enough Dems stay home, President Rick Perry isn't as impossible as you might think.

*gets off soapbox* :)

No it wasn't, because it's not over yet. It also preceded him by several generations.

I do...still rubbing their butts from having it handed to them in the Civil War. Black Codes, immigration quotas, alien land laws, reservation systems, male-only suffrage, jobs for straights-only, and 4 generations of whites-first/conservatives-rule segregation apparently wasn't enough for them afterwards. And yeah, we eventually crammed that crap right back down their throats, too.

They have NEVER gotten over the government telling them they cannot own others in their pursuit of property, money, and things. N-e-v-e-r. /Schadenfreude

DD, that mural just reminded me of something:

If either of you are interested, there was a (now deceased) photographer named Toni Frissell who took many wonderful photos of the Tuskeegee Airmen, along with other great and, in some cases, touching photos of black Americans that have a very intimate feel to them. For example, there's this one of an elderly man gently comforting a crying child.

Much of her work is available through the Library of Congress website in high resolution format suitable for printing. The majority are in the public domain, so they can be used pretty much without restriction.

Anyway, just throwing that out there in the hopes one of you will enjoy the images as much as I did.

seriously?

During the Depression, instead of "extended unemployment benefits" Roosevelt came up with the Works Public Administration that invented a gazillion jobs for every possible kind of people -- sure there was construction workers doing the TVA and Hoover Dam, but there was also plenty of wilderness work and the arts.

If there's any national parks near you that have trails cut through the forest, or benches or lovely campsites... the WPA did that. The NYC subway stations have gorgeous mosaics on all the walls, done by the WPA. If you've ever read any of the Library of Congress oral histories of the Civil War, old black people remembering what slavery was like when they were children, the WPA did those interviews. All the famous photographs from the 30s, of bread lines or the dust bowl, those were WPA projects.

Seriously. I'd heard of the program—my dad was significantly older than my mom and grew up during the Depression—but I didn't immediately associate it with the acronym or the subject at hand.

re: #54 Decatur Deb

In 30 years I saw a lot of virtues and vices in our military. Their one overriding virtue is that they will never, never, turn their weapons on the constitutionally-elected government.

This is a key point, and something that we have to remember against the background of the central imagery of the Tea Party: the original Tea party was a rebellion against a tyrannical government.

But the modern Tea party has come to equate our freely and constitutionally elected government with a tyrannical usurper. This is a leap of thinking (I do not call it logic) that scares me, as it opens the door for the very sort of excesses (i.e. "Second Amendment remedies") that Breivik, er, I mean Breitbart is advocating.

re: #14 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds

There is one thing that depresses me. I have met U.S. military personnel ranging from E-1 to O-3 who have stated to me their personal desire to engage in Brietbart's (and others') civil war fantasy. If there are active servicemen and women who are willing to admit this to a mere civilian like myself, how is it their desire to commit treason hasn't reached the ears of superior officers?

I take comfort from the fact that those I've heard calling for a civil war are in the minority.
