Sufjan Stevens: Too Much

Too much riding on that
Music • Views: 24,420

The new album by Sufjan Stevens is titled “The Age of Adz,” and it’s a gloriously weird, eccentric piece of music, full of odd bleepy electronic effects, a full symphony orchestra, and complex, surprising arrangements and lyrics. It may not be for everyone, but for me it’s the album of the year.

Here’s a live version of “Too Much,” recorded at the Sydney Opera House during Sydney Festival 2011.

One of my favorite albums of the year too.

I've actually created some choreography for a couple of the pieces.

Well I'll say this truth...
Music taste is like Wine..We can all disagree and all be right at the same time..
I swear that was a 80's flash back...I need more feathered hair but I swear we just did the 80's
/yes I know all music recycles itself
What the heck was the name of that song I had on my new fangled answering machine?
Girl was singing, ' Do you hear me? Do you care?'
Then I would say, ' Of Course I care, Leave your name and number and I'll care you back'
I loved the 80's.. I had great hair
*wink*

Breitbart has been uncharacteristically quiet about the video. No claims that it was edited or taken out of context. I would usually expect him to mount a defense but I guess he just decided to avoid drawing attention to it.

IIRC, he tried to have it thrown out on anti-SLAPP grounds, claiming that the whole lawsuit was aimed at violating his "free speech," and the judge threw that effort out.

Heh. But thinking that it's okay for businesses to ban black people is the moderate position! I know because Rogue told me so.

That one isn't going to get old any time soon.

On the other side of the aisle, I met a silly person down in the East Village today who told me "Anonymous has occupied Wall Street!" Took me awhile to figure out he was talking about those protesters on Saturday. Apparently their goal is to be there every day. If they actually are, that might actually be effective. But I somehow doubt it.

It was funny, I met him as he was trying to get this Panamanian guy to shit-talk the US but the Panamanian guy was explaining that it was pretty much a mixed bag, US involvement in Panama, since Bolivar's grand vision for the united states of South and Central America fell apart and what was left was squabbling oligarchs. The pro-Anonymous dude was kind of astonished to hear the Panamanian lay out his argument: Central and South America's political class were the monied Spaniards who moved there to exploit the living shit out of it, never to make actual countries that were actually homes for people.

They really shouldn't be, especially after son Rand was arguing last year that businesses operating as "Whites Only" is constitutional, couching it in "individual rights." The Paulian creed is a "freedom for me, not for thee" brand of libertarianism, that is okay with government intervention, but only against those things they find "immoral" and only if it's the states doing it.

Ugh. What an ugly commenting system they have over there.

I like this one:

The subtitle, "embarassing in its effects" is just the argument from intimidation. Don't agree with Ayn Rand or else some people might not like you! That kind of implication appears to be the real purpose of the article, as it is with a good half of the articles about Ayn Rand.

Yeah, that's not actually what I meant by the effects. It wasn't about people not liking me. I have no idea where he got that from.

The effects were simply retarding my intellectual development for a little while, as I attempted to force everything into the Randian viewpoint.

Kind of telling that he thought I was talking about social popularity, though.

I can only assume it's a natural defense mechanism of those who worship at the altar of Ayn, to assume that those who have strayed from the path did so out of some personal reason than any flaws in their ideology. I can't help but see the similarities between them and those who, even today, swear up and down that communism isn't flawed, it's the people implementing it that are. That, if the "right people" were running things, it would work just as foreseen.

Just got back from the ACLU Garden Party photo shoot. Very interesting spending some time with modern liberal (angry at this time) advocacy. Met Ed Asner, saw Gore Vidal speak. Dang I see the left is just as angry as the foam at the mouth right these days. Hardly a moderate to be found. D_L went as we went as a 2 person crew, myself to get video and she got all the best stills.

As much as I respect Gore Vidals positions on LGBT rights, I just could not agree that opposing legislation from our President is treason on the part of Congress or a Senator. That remark (met with huge applause) gave me pause.

I could not join the ACLU myself. I'm not that much a fan of the policies overall. But I'm happy to contribute in certain ways.

Starting pay range for this position is $13.2422 to $14.3229 per hour.

In the first number's case, we're talking slightly more than one-fifth of one cent per hour.

I agree the left right thing is terribly damaging, makes no sense and yet is exactly what we actually have to deal with. I based my "just as angry" comment on the rhetoric I heard from the podium. It's best not to assume single incidents are typical, yeah. Especially when you're talking about an organization like the ACLU, with half a million members, who does immense amount of work every year.

Why not judge them on their record of legal work, or the information on their website? Why is shit that got said at a garden party the way you've chosen to decide what they're really all about?

Hang on I referenced what I saw as from the left, not the ACLU as an organization. I judge the ACLU on their policies and work, I got the impression they intended (not really a judgement) to make from their very own selected speakers words. Hey the rhetoric was beyond what either of us would like to have seen. We can both deal with it. Advocacy is in part a disease. Exaggeration and red meat rhetoric are what fundraisers run on.

Historically, governments have tended to coalesce around those with the most power, whether that be in numbers or in firepower. You can be sure there will be more than a few dictators/warlords/oligarchs who decide that the fall of the US government means that they are now effectively in charge of any and all territory they can take and hold.

Many people don't actually understand the world, they just have a story they were taught. You see it on both sides of the aisle and it causes me no end of irritation.

I feel like Obama may have made a mistake in not taking that deal if it included 800 bil in revenue hikes. To be honest, Obama's mistake was thinking he could come to any sort of deal with the GOP that did not consist entirely of taking whatever they put forward and accepting it without question. The moment he started entertaining the idea that cuts were the biggest priority, he lost the battle.

Huntsman is no more moderate than Mittens is and the latter is doing fairly well.

Huntsman's become every much a sell-out as Romney, though he lacks even Mittens' cardboard charm. Watching the debate last week was sad, listening to him trying to use logic in front of an audience looking for talking points. He'd have been better off just waiting til '16, when he could have avoided being lumped in with the rest of the crazies.

re: #146 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds

To be honest, Obama's mistake was thinking he could come to any sort of deal with the GOP that did not consist entirely of taking whatever they put forward and accepting it without question. The moment he started entertaining the idea that cuts were the biggest priority, he lost the battle.

My problem is that having reached deals with the GOP, he is now moving to alter them. What else can you call his "jobs bill" or his ideas for significantly changing the tax code. The GOP made the deals with the understanding that those kinds of bills weren't going to be moved on till after the super-committee had reported. From where I stand, it looks like Obama is welching.

re: #143 publicityStunted

Wrong. They'd be perfectly happy with a tax hike on the middle class:

Yeah, but to the gop it doesn't count as an undesirable tax unless it affects the job "creators." This is the gop's line right now: that tax cuts/credits for the middle class don't do any good because they don't trickle down enough or create jobs.

Perry actually complained a couple weeks back about the "injustice" of the bottom half of earners not paying federal income taxes (despite all the other taxes they pay). But there's a good reason the bottom 50% of Americans don't pay fed income taxes: they control only 2% of the nation's overall wealth. You can't squeeze blood out of a stone.

Yeah, because in a recession driven by lack of demand, the one thing you want to do is give consumers even less money to spend.

re: #154 Winny Spencer

Huntsman is no more moderate than Mittens is and the latter is doing fairly well.

1) Mittens used to be a moderate, almost liberal. But he's spent the last 4 years reversing course on nearly every issue, including things he once strongly supported like gay rights, universal healthcare, abortion, gun control, immigration reform, etc. Now he tries to appear as conservative as Perry, et al. It just doesn't really work, because it seems phony.

2) Huntsman has staked out a position that puts him far to the left of the big names in the primaries, going so far as to admit to AGW and newfangled ideas like evolution. He's also a foreign policy realist and someone who seems willing to compromise (a dirty word in the perry/bachmann lexicon).

3) Mittens isn't really doing that well. He's had 4 years to get the gop to fall in love with him, and they're still ambivalent. Perry jumps in the race, and within a week, surges well past Mitt and the rest of the field. The base has found someone they can fall in love with in Perry. Won't ever happen for Mitt, despite 4 years of reversals and abject pandering.

Very good artistry there. It nicely echos the pictures drawn of dinosaurs up through the 50's-60's. Same sort of color tone as the paintings hanging in the Field Museum's Dinosaur hall in their Evolving Planet exhibit.

Creationists should not enter that exhibit, especially not if I'm there. The exhibit contains fossils of transitory species and has been known to cause Exploding Head Syndrome in creationists.

I think it's complete bullshit to have the lawmaking ability of the entire federal government circumscribed by one committee of 12 people for 5 months. Any government action is going to have an effect the deficit talks. Passing funding for FEMA, cutting aid to the Palestinians as a result of the UN vote or fixing the post office situation will all alter the deficit talks. Why should Obama's legislative proposals by withheld for this period when the congress is still very much in session? Nowhere in any of the debt talks did Obama tell the republicans that he would stop governing until the super-committee delivers it's findings.

Here's something I just noticed about recognition of the NTC in Pakistan:

Pakistan: On 25 August the Libyan Embassy in Islamabad has raised the rebel flag above its buildings. On 8 September in an interview for local Pakistani newspaper The Express Tribune an official from Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the Ministry will officially recognise the NTC as the sole representative of the Libyan people. He added also that before recognizing Pakistan will consult Saudi Arabia and other allies in Middle East.

Well, this shows collusion between the Saudis and Pakistan.

India and Bangladesh supported the NTC at the UN.

The nations that voted against switching recognition at the UN are:

Angola
Bolivia
Cuba
Ecuador
Equatorial Guinea
Kenya
Lesotho
Malawi
Namibia
Nicaragua
South Africa
Swaziland
Tanzania
Venezuela
Zambia
Zimbabwe

In addition, Uganda quashed a Pro-NTC demonstration, claiming worries about violence.

Countries that abstained are:

Algeria
Antigua and Barbuda
Cameroon
Dominican Republic
El Salvador
Guyana
Indonesia
Mali
Mauritania
Nepal
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Saudi Arabia
Trinidad and Tobago
Uganda
Uruguay

The Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas has moved in lockstep to refuse to recognize.
