Off-topic:

Well, unless you consider the topic to be rightwing extremism:

=================

Two funny developments on the climate change front:

1) Anthony Watts reports breathlessly on yet another study that drives the final nail into the coffin of the AGW cabal.

Ooops. Looks like Anthony was completely confused about the findings of the study - as was pointed out to him in the comments by the author of the study and to his credit, even Roy Spencer. Watts had to go back and re-write the post headline.

[Link: wattsupwiththat.com...]

2) Watts has been breathlessly posting about an erroneous report in the Times Word Atlas about the rate of ice melting in Greenland. Anthony is on this - he called it "Atlasgate," and asks deep, deep questions:

Makes you wonder though, was this a faulty interpretation of existing NSIDC data by the Times, or was it something else?

Why, it was obvious, wasn't it? This was part of the Marxist plot to fool the unsuspecting public into believing the "AGW fraud," and those Marxist scientists at the National Snow and Ice Data Center are trying to pull yet another fast one. Many of Anthony's commenters, like Anthony, are not to be fooled.

Interstellar Bill says:
September 19, 2011 at 2:56 pm

As do all uber-Lefties, the Warmistas double-down on their lies when called out on them.
Perhaps copies of the bogus Atlas will become collector’s items, souvenirs of the Global Warming Hoax. “Look children, at how crazy they were back then, just as the Great Cold was ramping up.”

You know, the librul media is in cohoots with the "fraud scientists." Only Anthony and his fellow "skeptics" can save us all from disaster.

Oops. Turns out that the Times Atlas failed to accurately portray the information given to them by climate scientists.

OK, so it wasn't the scientists themselves that tried to pull the wool over eyes - it was just that librul media acting on its own.

Oops.

The humiliating climbdown for HarperCollins – part of Rupert Murdoch’s publishing empire – came after key sources of data on the Greenland ice denied that their research, cited by the Times Atlas, warranted the claims.

So now we find out the truth. Rupert Murdoch is actually a super-sekrit sleeper double-agent. He's actually the leader of the AGW-cabal!

Look under the beds!!! The co-conspirators are everywhere!!

No one can be trusted!!11!!!!!11!!!!!1!!!!1!!!!!

Please correct me if I'm wrong. I don't really understand the connection between Fox News and Fox Nation, but isn't the latter something of a public forum? Isn't it a little disingenuous to call a post there a 'Fox News headline', popular though it may be?

Why discuss the pressing matters at hand when we can drag up a decade old incident and ignore the whole thing?

Faux News: We don't have any straight news broadcasts.

Well if you can't attack the truth, attack the man saying the truth. Fox are professional liars, and they are supported and fed lies about AGW by whole fossil fuel funded "think tanks" of liars like Heartland and Cato to name a few.

The projection and smug bitterness of astroturfers and propagandists gets old.

The truth is, the actual truth is that many other nations respect science and will start acting for their own preservation in the face of this grave threat. The GOP is a national disgrace in this and many other matters. Other nations will come to resent the US for destroying the same planet they live on too.

The truth is that energy efficiency is cheaper than burning more. This is fact borne out by hard economic analysis. By clinging to keep things status quo the GOP parasite just insures it can drain even more money into its corporate masters. Money that need not be spent.

Here is a great video summary of that from Peter Sinclair.

This is real math and boring economics. If you follow it through to its natural conclusion, we clearly see the GOP clearly diong its best to suck yet more of your money away not only at the cost to your wallet, but to the cost of national security and the health and well being of all Americans.

I am not even getting into the many billions of deaths that these GOP actions will help bring about. On that score alone the GOP are much worse than a national disgrace.

I'm not so sure about that. The disinformation promulgated by extremists like Watts (he's very rightwing, btw), does have a notable impact. And the leading Republican Party candidate is part and parcel with the misleading rhetoric which is promulgated by people like Watts. Watts has an impact - and no wishful thinking on anyone's part will diminish that impact.

Some 60% of the respondents in a recent George Mason poll don't realize that the vast majority of climate scientists accept the basic theory of AGW.

There's a reason that so many people don't know the reality of the situation - and Fox News and Anthony Watts are linked together in promoting mis-information.

Sure. A short-term focus on people on what matters to them day-to-day makes it an uphill climb for them to take seriously a problem that will take years, decades, centuries to fully unfold.

But simply ridiculing the intelligence of voters, IMO, is not particularly relevant. Once again, these promoters of mis-information have a very real impact. There are hard-core "deniers' out there that couldn't care less about the science. But large %'s of the American public don't even know the degree to which their is widespread agreement amongst scientists - and there's a reason for that. That makes an uphill battle that much more difficult.

One reason for the lack of awareness is the "false-balance" reporting we see in non-rightwing mainstream media. But the impact of rightwing mainstream media, like Fox, Limbaugh, et al is significant. And Watts is a big part of that w.r.t climate change.

It's still a shitty way to treat a president who left office with a 64% approval rating and who has, since leaving office, been one of our most respected and successful ambassadors to the world.

Even you can't defend this Fox headline as acceptable. What if someone said, "Former Cocaine Snorting President Who Left Obama a Shitstain of an Economy" to refer to Bush...wouldn't that be a little inappropriate?

re: #59 goddamnedfrank

It's also completely irrelevant, like randomly introducing GWB as a convicted drunk driver, or Cheney as someone who had a beer and then shot his friend in the face.

Should all headlines refer to Cheney as "draft dodging, face shooting former Vice President Dick Cheney"? By the Satt test, that would be accurate. And therefore appropriate.

To the extent that I misunderstood your position, I apologize, but you were putting so much energy into defending the accuracy of the headline (I saw several posts to that point) that I took from that some modicum of approval. Otherwise, what's the point? But if you were just standing up for the constitutional accuracy of the headline in a context-free way, then OK.

It is estimated that about 1% of the US population can be classified as psychopaths and perhaps 20% of prison populations (and higher for murderers). Psychopaths are not insane, they just knowingly don't give a shit for others. No empathy, no love, no ethics beyond what is required for staying out of trouble, and this is not a learned state of mind that can be unlearned, it is inherent in the personality.

I suspect that in N.K. it is a requirement of the party to be a psychopath. It's not hard to imagine 1% of the population gaining power and keeping it, and then applying for membership of the UN and being treated with respect.//

It is estimated that about 1% of the US population can be classified as psychopaths and perhaps 20% of prison populations (and higher for murderers). Psychopaths are not insane, they just knowingly don't give a shit for others.

Which is why they also comprise a higher percentage of CEOs.

British journalist Jon Ronson immersed himself in the world of mental health diagnosis and criminal profiling to understand what makes some people psychopaths — dangerous predators who lack the behavioral controls and tender feelings the rest of us take for granted. Among the things he learned while researching his new book, “The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry”: the incidence of psychopathy among CEOs is about 4 percent, four times what it is in the population at large.

Yay capitalism!

Which is why they also comprise a higher percentage of CEOs.

Yay capitalism!

They work hard and make what others call "difficult decisions", easily. One can see how it can be an advantage in some ways.

Without meaning to imply anything, since I doubt anyone has been given the opportunity to analyse them, one has to wonder what the percentage is among elected officials.

I did hear on NPR that of the 1% of millionaire earners in the US population, 50% are members of congress; although to be fair it was not entirely clear if that meant earning $1 million in taxable income, or possibly having business revenues in excess of $1 million.

Did they do anything good after DLR left? Their first 5 albums (up thru 1984) were about as edgy as pop metal could be; after that, they seemed to settle into middle aged boring rock trying to top the charts.

Here's something to keep an eye on this week....
Disaster aid showdown looms on Capitol Hill

The Democratic leader of the Senate says he'll try this week to add almost $7 billion in disaster aid to must-pass legislation to avert a government shutdown.

The move by Nevada Democrat Harry Reid would force GOP supporters of a Senate disaster relief bill to choose whether to stick with the Senate disaster package or opt for a less generous House version. The House version is partially "paid for" with a $1.5 billion cut to a federal program that subsidizes low interest loans to car companies to build more fuel efficient vehicles.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor says the GOP House measure providing $3.7 billion in disaster relief as part of the stopgap measure is adequate for the needs of disaster victims, which include people affected by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.

Scumbags.

He's not the first prez or candidate to refuse release of college records. I don't really remember this being an issue with previous presidents.

As for the "ties to anti Israel issues", I'm not sure what you mean. I can see how the Rev. Wright thing was upsetting at first, but Obama went to that church because it was the largest black congregation in Chicago, then left the church after Wright's ugly statements came out, repudiated Wright, and was then harshly criticized by Wright. I don't think there's anything there.

re: #290 Obdicut

Obama called for a Palestinian state to be demilitarized-- and for it to recognize Israel's right to exist.

Yep, exactly. I'm going to keep posting these parts from Obama's speech, just to hammer the point home:

For the Palestinians, efforts to delegitimize Israel will end in failure. Symbolic actions to isolate Israel at the United Nations in September won't create an independent state. Palestinian leaders will not achieve peace or prosperity if Hamas insists on a path of terror and rejection. And Palestinians will never realize their independence by denying the right of Israel to exist.

And

As for security, every state has the right to self-defense, and Israel must be able to defend itself. Provisions must also be robust enough to prevent a resurgence of terrorism; to stop the infiltration of weapons; and to provide effective border security. The full and phased withdrawal of Israeli military forces should be coordinated with the assumption of Palestinian security responsibility in a sovereign, non-militarized state.

Italian scientists on trial over L'Aquila earthquake
WTF

Sometimes, too much is expected of science. We simply don't know how to predict earthquakes, and the smart money is on the notion that they're inherently unpredictable. One can, indeed, say that San Francisco is at high risk of a 7+ earthquake. But beyond that, lies the question of when. And here, there's little help to be had from science. Tomorrow? Could be. Not for another ten years? Yeah, maybe so. Not for 50? Who can say? Little quakes do not necessarily precede big quakes. Big quakes do not normally follow on the heels of little ones. The conditional probability of a big one, given that there have been a bunch of little ones, does not rise, or fall, all that much, from its baseline probability.

Well, Obama could be a Dominionist Christian like Bachmann or Perry and talk incessantly about how much he just loves Jews and Israel. It'd be nice if he just wouldn't shut up about it, almost like he was protesting too much.

Today in the Church there is a changing attitude toward Israel, which is attributed to to the teachings of Dominionists. One of the key doctrines of this movement is the claim that the Church is now Israel, heir to all of her promises, and that national Israel has been cut off from God, and has further no place in the prophetic scheme.

Gee, that would be so much more reassuring.

Yeah, the JB Black is nice. Recently I've grown fond of Basil Hayden's, though a lot of bourbon purists probably aren't fans. It's a bit lighter bodied and has more rye than most bourbons. Rye whiskey used to be the most popular type of whiskey. My 87 year old mom told me that's what everyone drank back in her day. But most bars now only stock one or two rye varieties. Works great in a NoLA specialty cocktail called a sazerac, with bitters and a little Pernod.

My wife likes a good sazerac.

It's a good one--doesn't destroy the whiskey taste but takes the edge off. A little bit like a Manhattan I suppose, just with a Frenchy influence. You ever try Booker's? It's 135 proof, the strongest bourbon out there. Bottled unfiltered. Kinda the opposite of the Basil Hayden's I just mentioned.

What does a giraffe do with a toad?

Can you even see them from way up there?

"Today in the Church there is a changing attitude toward Israel, which is attributed to to the teachings of Dominionists. One of the key doctrines of this movement is the claim that the Church is now Israel, heir to all of her promises, and that national Israel has been cut off from God, and has further no place in the prophetic scheme."

Gee, that would be so much more reassuring.

Straight from the horses' mouth, or, one of many horses' mouths.

I advocate that these days, as opposed to going through Religion Dispatches or talk2action (they provide great information, but there's nothing like the authentic animal.)

Also, this "article" does something rarely seen in the RD/t2a dominionism-hysteria world...he references Bishop Earl Paulk, who really should be credited as a founder of "dominionism", via that "Kingdom Now" stuff. 70s-80s, mainly 80s.

Too bad for him, though; he had to admit, in front of everyone, that he's a child molester. Wonderful leaders, these CZ bigots have.

I have had it...lovely stuff.

"According to a Pew Research Center survey, 82 percent of Americans believe that Christ will either definitely, probably, or will have returned to earth by 2050."

Only 30 more repenting days until the Rapture. (Mean it this time.)

'Nite, all.

Woodford Reserve and a splash of sweet vermouth...what problems were we talking about?

Your problem is a lack of a dash of bitters and a couple of cherries.

And a good rye is always even nicer.

It's funny, 13 years later and some people still can't accept that Clinton was impeached.

Others can think of nothing else when they hear his name.
