Boehner vs. Tea Party - Boehner Loses

Obstruction is all they care about
Politics • Views: 17,528

The Tea Party contingent in the House of Representatives gave John Boehner another public spanking today: Vote shows Boehner’s lack of control.

House Republicans tried a fresh strategy Wednesday night: Go it alone on a spending bill.

The result was an embarrassing setback.

Wednesday night’s rank-and-file rebuke of GOP leadership — with 48 Republicans bolting on a temporary spending bill — underscored the fact that the House Republican majority is still struggling to find unity on major spending bills. It also showed they still need Democratic votes to help them govern.

The pressure from an angry Speaker John Boehner didn’t work — he even threatened to strip committee assignments. Four dozen Republicans —mostly conservatives — wanted more cuts, and they just said no, creating an uncomfortable scene on the House floor as the funding bill failed on a 195-230 vote. Democrats showed a rare moment of unity in overwhelmingly opposing the continuing resolution, which would keep the government funded through Nov. 18.

Now, to prevent a government shutdown, Republicans will have to rewrite the bill and figure out how to get the votes.

Boehner’s lack of control

(sob!)

Could it be that the GOP will have to become just a little reasonable because they will have to deal with Dems? Amazing.

After how many failed bills does everyone finally just acknowledge that Boehner is very very bad at being Speaker?

figure out how to get the votes

so you're implying that the tea party doesn't get to dictate policy unilaterally and own the future just because republicans took over the house in the last election?

that's not what i heard

On a serious note we can only pray that the coming teabag split in the GOP heats up enough in the next ten months to split the party.

Anything radical enough to pass the house will never make it in the senate. If the GOP was just playing games it wouldn't be so bad but this is just incompetence. I'll be very surprised if they pass anything reasonable.

Republicans failing to vote lock step with each other while possessing a large enough majority to insure victory if only they managed to all agree on what they wanted?

Must.... restrain.... schadenfreude....

Any deal attempted by Boehner should be ignored by the Democrats unless he pays off his side of the deal first. They can't be trusted to keep their word at a later date.

11 Mad Prophet Ludwig  Thu, Sep 22, 2011 10:14:44am

And in the mean time, there is serious work to be done by sober individuals to address the nation's many problems. This is what the GOP gets for turning crazy and allowing astroturfed imbeciles, incompetent to be on the PTA, into positions of actual authority.

After months of a Republican nomination race that struggled to catch fire, Rick Perry and Mitt Romney are now locked in a fight they both predict will extend well into 2012.

Republicans expect a split decision in the early voting states with neither Perry, the Tea Party favorite, nor Romney, the establishment candidate, able to land a knock-out blow for the Republican presidential nomination.

Speaker Boehner: ‘No Threat of Government Shutdown’

“There’s no threat of government shutdown,” Boehner, R-Ohio, said confidently. “This continuing resolution was designed to be a bipartisan bill, and we had every reason to believe that our counterparts across the aisle were supportive. Once they began to see where some of our votes were, they decided to play politics and vote against disaster relief for millions of Americans who have been affected by this.”

Interesting. Would a Romney nomination lead to more tea-partiers being elected to balance him out, and a Perry or Palin nomination lead to more moderates elected in republican districts.

A Romney nomination might lead to a Tea Party third party challenger, but from what I've seen there just aren't enough reasonable/moderate republicans (or those that are out there aren't being loud enough) to launch a credible challenge to a crazy GOP candidate, they'd be more likely to vote for Obama or just stay home.

I think I get now why the GOP and their media allies like to talk about "Taqiyya" so much. It's just more of their projection. It's fine for Perry to lie and claim that the stimulus created not a single job. It's an obvious, total, idiotic lie, but it's fine for him to say it-- even though everyone knows it's a lie-- because it's in the service of his ideology.

Shouldn't it worry the GOP that they closely resemble what they profess to hate?

I don't know for sure... I think that it would go district by district. Deep red and rural would likely go more fundie teabag. Other areas would go more libertarian teabag. Other areas would go more traditional corporate GOP that pays lipservice to both.

What matters then is that as a fragmented party, the GOP would eviscerate itself in presidential elections. I personally predict a teabag revolt of some sort in the wake of a Romney election and a corporate, "what? you are cutting OUR federal money?!?" revolt in the wake of a Perry nomination - though that would be slower and more subtle.

Either way though, it ultimately weakens the bad guys. I am praying for the so far abated GOP mass self cannibalism event to come sooner rather than later.

I really don't understand why the TGOP feels they need to have 50 debates this early in the cycle.

It's got to be something else - probably the media trying to curry favor with the whack-jobs. Maybe they think that giving the Teahadis unlimited face time will ingratiate them with the wingnut demographic.

The conservatives I know will absolutely take this tactic. This is the same shit I heard in August. You've a got a core group of Republicans purposely precipitating government funding crises. Yet the people who support them, instead of spine-ing up and admitting their party triggered this mess, will pull the whole "it's everyone's fault/all politicians suck" gambit.

These same GOP supporters wouldn't punish all of their kids if only one did something bad. Yet when it comes to the shortcomings of their chosen party, they bury their heads so far in the sand they split their heads open when striking bedrock.

Ahem, did you guys read this part?

Democrats, including Appropriations Ranking Democrat Norm Dicks, said they’d support the bill, but reversed course because of pressure from Democrats opposed to an offset that cut a subsidy for automobile manufacturers.

II think Boehner has a legitimate beef here with the Democrats. He tried to bypass the radical wing of his own party to get a reasonable budget. And the Democrats bailed on him. And their excuse is that they wanted more corporate welfare?
