Speaking of outer space…

Geller accuses founders of SPLC of being communists, names wrong people as founders

My favorite line:

Geller tattled more about her supposed confidential source: “My informant worked for a Communist Party bookstore between 1978 and 1983. My informant learned there directly and with certainty that Anne Braden was a Communist Party member and that she also had worked with the Southern Poverty Law Center. Perhaps your superiors have lied to you.”

Or, perhaps Geller is just chronically impaired when it comes to plain reality – especially those parts of it that deviate from the reality she creates in her head.

Mr. Romney has tried the new $4.39 Carl’s Jr. jalapeño chicken sandwich (“delicious”), celebrated the Reagan Library debate with fast-food burgers and fries (again, Carl’s Jr.), and dug into a Subway flatbread sandwich while sitting in an airport terminal (“better than the usual campaign diet of morning donuts”).

Carl’s Jr. was founded by Carl Karcher.

Political activities

Karcher was a lifelong supporter of Conservative causes and contributed to anti-gay initiatives such as the Briggs Initiative.[5]

Karcher was an early supporter of John Schmitz, a Republican and member of the John Birch Society, who represented Orange County in the California State Senate and later Congress.

In 1978, he provided $1 million USD to California’s Proposition 6, also known as the Briggs Initiative. He was the initiative’s biggest financial supporter. The proposition was a ballot measure requiring the termination of all gays and lesbians from employment in public schools. The initiative was defeated by over one million votes.

I worked at the one that opened first, in Brea, but it was known as #2 because the one that opened second was the home store.

FBI Arrests U.S. Suspect in LulzSec Sony Hack; Anonymous Targeted, Too

The suspect, Cody Andrew Kretsinger, is believed to be a member of the LulzSec group, an offshoot of the online griefer collective known as Anonymous. LulzSec called it quits in June after 50 days of high-profile breaches made public through a fascinating and oddly entertaining Twitter account.

A second unidentified man was arrested in San Francisco the same day in connection with Anonymous cyberattacks on web sites belonging to Santa Cruz County government offices, according to Fox News. Search warrants were also being executed against other Anonymous suspects in New Jersey, Minnesota and Montana, an FBI source told the news agency.

The actions continue an ongoing law-enforcement crackdown against alleged members of the two groups. In July, federal agents arrested 14 suspected Anonymous members on charges of participating in denial-of-service attacks against online payment service provider PayPal.

Five additional suspects were arrested overseas — one in the United Kingdom and four in the Netherlands — for related crimes. The UK arrest was reportedly of “Tflow”, a former member of LulzSec, identified by police as a 16-year-old male.

That was the first time I found out I was helping a fascist get rich(er). More recently, I found out I’ve been paying rent to a fascist for the last 12 years when I read her obituary. She was mayor of a town that bans unmarried cohabitants, and she tried to keep someone from putting up a lawn sign she disagreed with, but lost when it got to the Supreme Court.

Here in Portland we have a lot of hippies that want to help the environment but have no clue what they’re doing. They feed the crows, pigeons and seagulls. Open compost piles attract 1,000’s of rats and mice. They think pests and vermin are part of the natural world. It’s very frustrating.

Texas Abolishes Last Meal Requests For Death Row Inmates

Brewer requested an elaborate meal that included a triple-meat bacon cheeseburger, a meat-lover’s pizza, a big bowl of okra with ketchup, a pound of barbecue, a half a loaf of bread, peanut butter fudge, a pint of ice cream and two chicken-fried steaks.

When the meal arrived around 4PM, Brewer said he wasn’t hungry.

Many communities have installed LED stop lights in an effort to reduce electricity costs. Just one small problem. In areas where it snows, the snow is wind blown against the lens and blocks the light. The LED’s don’t produce enough heat to melt the snow.

I once got a call at three in the morning (middle of winter) that there was no heat

Thought there may be something wrong with the furnace so I hustled over

Invited in and there, on the kitchen table was a pile of unpaid gas bills (the tenants were to pay all the utilities except water)

I tried killing rats for a while with poison and traps. It’s pointless beyond taking steps to make sure sure one doesn’t feed them beyond what nature does. I quite when I killed a bird in a trap. Still bothers me.

Hmmm, I have poison out now as an emergency measure to kill as many as possible. So far they’ve eaten about 1 1/2 pounds of poison over 2-3 weeks and they’re still going at it. I hate releasing that much poison into the environment. I was planing on getting a live trap and then offing the captured critters myself with a pellet gun. I’m not looking forward to it.

Way back in the day I shared a one bedroom with a friend of mine. Then he knocked a gal up, got married and moved her in.

They had the bedroom, I slept on the couch, and they still expected me to pay half the rent.

Then they went and blew their paychecks on a bunch of stupid toys for a baby that wasn’t born yet, and a little weed as well.

Of course they didn’t have any money left for their share of the rent, so we got evicted. And don’t you know those mother fuckers didn’t even share a puff of that weed with me!

Three guys are adventuring out in the jungle together when they’re set upon by a tribe of cannibals. They’re taken back to the village where the chieftain explains that the tribe is going to kill them, eat their innards, and use their skin to make canoes. As the men begin to panic and protest, the chieftain says that, as an act of mercy, he will allow the men to decide how they die.

The first man chooses to die by the pistol he always carried with him. The chieftain agrees, and the man promptly draws his gun, fires off five rounds into five different tribesmen, and saves the last for himself.

When the commotion dies down, the chieftain graciously decides to let the incident slide, as neither of the other two men were responsible for the deaths of his brothers. The second man asks for a knife. The chieftain provides a large hunting knife and the man promptly stabs himself in the heart, falling to the ground and dying.

The third man asks calmly for a fork. The chieftain and several tribesmen question the choice of ‘weapon’, but agree to allow it. The man begins stabbing himself all over his body screaming “FUCK YOUR CANOES!”

That looks like a variant on an extruded aluminum Florida ‘Screen Room’. I’ve done a simple one 12x25. It’s just like a big Erector set, if well designed.

if it come to it…call Manpower or whoever…they can help on the cheap

My husband’s company has all kinds of classes for on the job safety for workers while most of the folks’ injuries happen at home. Many, many ladder incidents gone awry.

You can rent them here for less than the materials cost, and they’re lawyer-rated.

Just saw this on FB.

The hobbit you just called fat? He’s skipping 2nd breakfast. The dwarf woman you called ugly? She spends hours braiding her beard so you can differentiate her from a dwarf man. The Uruk-Hai you just killed? He was abused by Saruman every day. See that Gollum creature with the gangly limbs and large eyes? The Ring poisoned his mind for 500 years. That elf you just made fun of for crying? He just lost his wizard friend to a Balrog. Repost this if you’re against bullying in Middle-Earth.

That’s funny as shit.

162 albusteve  Thu, Sep 22, 2011 5:03:45pm

I reroofed my house…an enormous cape cod with three dormers…I could not do it alone, so I hired a couple of Manpower type guys…I stripped the entire roof myself and they did all the cleanup…I cleated and set walk boards and they loaded all the shingles for me…it was an 8/12 pitch, pretty steep…I wined them and dined them and gave them a fat bonus…I could not have done it without them…those two ragamuffin workers were outstanding….well worth the cost

Yeah, and if they’re from a real temp company, you’re probably covered on Workmens’ Comp, not true if you pick a crew from in front of Home Depot.

Tipping the owner is gauche, but the helper/Manpower types? Always give them a little sumthin’ sumthin’. It is not only appreciated; it is desperately needed.

I always tip them before they start. It’s worked wonders. They tend to do the little extras.

Customer tonight had already hired a couple of guys who “on the side” do HVAC work. He couldn’t find the phone number to cancel our appointment. He was embarrassed, but, they worked really cheap. New furnace, air-conditioning system for a house for under 4 grand. Less than half of anybody else he got quotes from. (I would’ve been the 5th quote).

Without pulling permits, with no workman’s comp, they’re going to replace his gas furnace.

Heh.

A homeowner’s policy can refuse to pay if you hire an uninsured worker to work at your house. Insurance companies can always afford more lawyers than you can.

No—you might have saved his house from the lawyers or the fire. When I upped my attic insulation, I put my hand down on a nail some HVAC genius had driven through the electrical service.

Nothing like AC work to pad the quote. I have used someone for years that I have come to trust, but I will still require permits. Not worth the potential hassle if they come a knocking. Also remember, never get multiple quotes if no permit is pulled. That is almost a guarantee of an inspection, called in by one of the losers.

Not so smart actually. The permit cost is not that great and if you live in the house you can pull it yourself (admittedly I am speaking FL here) . You get an independent codes inspection included and, more importantly, you have the job recorded should you ever sell the property with the same roof.

189 Decatur Deb  Thu, Sep 22, 2011 5:27:44pm

Re Steve’s 183:

There’s a weird Habitat group called ‘Careavaners”. They wander the country in computer-organized RV convoys, dropping in on worksites that can promise enough to keep them busy. Most are retired, or seasonal workers (the ones that came to us included a chimney-sweep.)
One retired Air Force Civil Engineering guy had a custom trailer that popped open into the most lust-worthy collection of tools, all of them mounted on shadow-painted panels. Give them a look unless you’re going to be cruising with your friend and her medical clinic RV.

Yes, times have changed though. Now it’s about permit revenue. In 15 years we did about 70 houses. Last three years are dead. Can’t afford the risk and just babysit the rentals we still have, worth half of what we thought was our retirement. Hey, but I’m still working……at something.

Another interesting set of photos were the shots of the UARS satellite taken by Thierry Legault from his 14-inch telescope in France.
