Making decisions on faith, and not that pesky science
Candidates take note: If you hope to court the vote of Tea Partiers and evangelicals, be sure to denounce the science of climate change and evolution.
A new study released today by the Public Religion Research Institute contained a host of interesting findings about Americans’ beliefs when it comes to these two topics. Overall, 57 percent of Americans say they believe in evolution (and 61 percent of Catholics, which is still pretty low), although there is some disagreement among them on whether the process of evolution was natural or guided by a supreme being. But only 32 percent of evangelicals and 43 percent of Tea Party supporters think humans have evolved over time.
When it comes to climate change, 69 percent of those polled (and 70 percent of Catholics) say there is strong scientific evidence to prove that global warming isn’t a “myth,” as some claim. But not surprisingly, there’s a strong divide here along political lines - 81 percent of Democrats and only 49 percent of Republicans believe that climate change is real. And at the bottom of the list is the Tea Party, with only 41 percent believing in climate change (evangelicals here are way above the average Republican numbers, with 57 percent agreeing that the earth is getting warmer).
What makes the poll more interesting is that respondents were also asked whether a candidate’s stance on these issues would impact their vote. On evolution, evangelicals were the only group where a large number (32 percent) said they would be more likely to back a candidate who doesn’t believe in evolution. For the Tea Party, a candidate who doesn’t believe in climate change has a stronger appeal to 33 percent of the party members polled.

What we do not need is the repealing of all the structures that make America a worthy and successful nation.
I do not want some cretin theocrat putting his twisted church into my state and imposing it on me.
I do not want to see out justice perverted by bloodlust for executions and trampling basic rights in the name of them protecting me from terrorists.
I do not ant to see women stripped of their rights.
I do not want to see it suddenly become ok again to openly hate blacks or brown people or people of the “wrong” religion.
I do not want the economic status of America to become a third world country with a few wealthy and many many poor. It is almost too late to stop that now as it is.
I do not want these endless lies in the service of plutocrats.

Easy. I think that most of them are better economically that Obama and stronger on national security matters. That said, I would vote for Obama over Bachmann or Paul, because I am convinced those two are dangerous lunatics.
Romney - Genuine politician (not a compliment, but best of a bad lot).
Cain - Publicity stunt on behalf of Herman Cain.
Gingrich - Doesn’t get out the primaries, plus, also unpallatable to most people in the Gingrich family.
Santorum - How he is still forming a creer, let alone two coherent sentences without remarking in a creepy level on Gods Glory and the Gay Mafia is worthy or props.
Huntsman - Mr Anonymous gets swept because he lacks personality and is far too easily poirtrayed as spurned. Probably a nice guy, with a decent grip on issues, but can’t be himself until the General (which he won’t make).
Bachmann - Loon.
Paul - Loon.

It was then topped by Santorum pushing the “Social Experiment” bit about DADT being abolished and trying to argue in favor of shoving “teh ghey” back into the closet if they wish to serve.
I’d laugh if I thought these morons had no real chance at the presidency. But, sadly, they do. And so I’m left wondering when this Great Experiment went so horribly wrong, that we’re arguing in favor of taking the country back to the 18th century.
Lol I love it when conservatives point and cry about so-called “social experiments”.

National security? You mean like finally focusing on Afghanistan which was ignored for almost 10 years by a Republican administration? Or the part where defense spending set a record as far spending? Or the increased funding for veterans care and benefits?
Name one national security mistake that Obama made. Not a policy disagreement but a national security mistake that led to an actual attack on the USA.

I’d also like to add an element that hasn’t been talked about that much and that’s the President’s role in the Arab Spring
I don’t want to take anything away from the individuals in the streets that are literally risking life, limb, and so much more to take on the regimes they have spent generations under……..
But I think this President has played an important role. By reaching out to the younger more moderate muslims it has completely taken off the table the narrative of these regimes that the US and the western world is completely responsible for the shit hole that so many of these countries have become under these dictators.
When you remove the US as the boogeyman and the citizens of those countries realize their lives haven’t changed, then they begin to blame those who are truly responsible……their own leaders.
Again, I don’t want to overstate the role that the US and this President have played……but the same Arab youth that were burning American flags the past decade are now the ones taking to the streets against those truly responsible for their misery: their own leaders.

re: #218 mr.fusion
Dude went to Cairo and lectured the Arab leaders about the dangers of oppression before this shit went down.
Dudes prescient.
I know there has been controversy about the promotion of democracy in recent years, and much of this controversy is connected to the war in Iraq. So let me be clear: no system of government can or should be imposed upon one nation by any other.
That does not lessen my commitment, however, to governments that reflect the will of the people. Each nation gives life to this principle in its own way, grounded in the traditions of its own people. America does not presume to know what is best for everyone, just as we would not presume to pick the outcome of a peaceful election.
But I do have an unyielding belief that all people yearn for certain things: the ability to speak your mind and have a say in how you are governed; confidence in the rule of law and the equal administration of justice; government that is transparent and doesn’t steal from the people; the freedom to live as you choose.
Those are not just American ideas, they are human rights, and that is why we will support them everywhere.
There is no straight line to realise this promise. But this much is clear: governments that protect these rights are ultimately more stable, successful and secure. Suppressing ideas never succeeds in making them go away. America respects the right of all peaceful and law-abiding voices to be heard around the world, even if we disagree with them. And we will welcome all elected, peaceful governments – provided they govern with respect for all their people.

Christine, scarred by her hunt for Elijah and unable to let him go, perished in the Sierra Madre Casino. She never completed her mission, nor did she stop to consider what had driven her to accept the mission in the first place. Obsession is another form of greed, a lesson that Christine never learned.
You’ve heard of the Sierra Madre Casino. We all have, the legend, the curses. Some foolishness about it lying in the middle of a City of Dead. A city of ghosts. Buried beneath a blood-red cloud… a bright, shining monument luring treasure hunters to their doom. An illusion that you can begin again, change your fortunes. Finding it, though, that’s not the hard part. It’s letting go.
Old World Blues:
Doctor Mobius: There is an expression in the Wasteland: “Old World Blues.”
Doctor Klein: It refers to those so obsessed with the past they can’t see the present, much less the future, for what it is.
Doctor Dala: They stare into the what-was, eyes like pilot lights, guttering and spent, as the realities of their world continue on around them.
Doctor O: Science is a long, steady progression into the future. What may seem a sudden event often isn’t felt for years, even centuries, to come.

Johnson is pretty funny.. If he doesn’t get elected I could see him doing a half hour sitcom on the comedy channel
He recycles his lines too often. If I have to hear that “I started a one-man handyman business in Albuquerque” opening again, I am going to punch the wall.
