I imagine this is like going to watch a debate between two creationists on whether the Earth is 6000 or 10,000 years old… it’s hard to decide for whom to cheer.

Making decisions on faith, and not that pesky science

Candidates take note: If you hope to court the vote of Tea Partiers and evangelicals, be sure to denounce the science of climate change and evolution.

A new study released today by the Public Religion Research Institute contained a host of interesting findings about Americans’ beliefs when it comes to these two topics. Overall, 57 percent of Americans say they believe in evolution (and 61 percent of Catholics, which is still pretty low), although there is some disagreement among them on whether the process of evolution was natural or guided by a supreme being. But only 32 percent of evangelicals and 43 percent of Tea Party supporters think humans have evolved over time.

When it comes to climate change, 69 percent of those polled (and 70 percent of Catholics) say there is strong scientific evidence to prove that global warming isn’t a “myth,” as some claim. But not surprisingly, there’s a strong divide here along political lines - 81 percent of Democrats and only 49 percent of Republicans believe that climate change is real. And at the bottom of the list is the Tea Party, with only 41 percent believing in climate change (evangelicals here are way above the average Republican numbers, with 57 percent agreeing that the earth is getting warmer).

What makes the poll more interesting is that respondents were also asked whether a candidate’s stance on these issues would impact their vote. On evolution, evangelicals were the only group where a large number (32 percent) said they would be more likely to back a candidate who doesn’t believe in evolution. For the Tea Party, a candidate who doesn’t believe in climate change has a stronger appeal to 33 percent of the party members polled.

I honestly could not bear it. We need schools and clean air and clean water. We need more jobs from the government to get the economy going again and put money into the middle class. That will increase revenue. It worked in the 30’s it will work now. We need new infrastructure.

We need science.

We need sanity.

What we do not need is the repealing of all the structures that make America a worthy and successful nation.

I do not want some cretin theocrat putting his twisted church into my state and imposing it on me.

I do not want to see out justice perverted by bloodlust for executions and trampling basic rights in the name of them protecting me from terrorists.

I do not ant to see women stripped of their rights.

I do not want to see it suddenly become ok again to openly hate blacks or brown people or people of the “wrong” religion.

I do not want the economic status of America to become a third world country with a few wealthy and many many poor. It is almost too late to stop that now as it is.

I do not want these endless lies in the service of plutocrats.

The GOP is against America. They are an elitist party of fear and exclusion. They are a party of ignorance. They are assiduously working to destroy our country and they can not be allowed to win.

re: #184 Dark_Falcon

No, Dark. You don’t get to say that you ‘think’ that they’re better economically. What you mean is that someone else has told you that they are and you believe them. That’s what you’ve said; you haven’t actually applied your own critical thought to it.

What do you think of none of them, absolutely none of them, standing up for the honor and dignity of that veteran, but letting the crowd boo him like they were a bunch of hippies seeing a soldier getting back from ‘nam?

These are people you can support? That won’t stand up for a veteran asking an honest question on an important subject?

How much has the anti-gay policy in the military cost us in terms of readiness? How many expertly-trained men and women have been ousted because of it?

Oh. I was hoping someone, Huntsman maybe, would have the balls to defend a service member who risked their life for their country.

This reminds me of back in WWII, where active duty black soldiers had to eat a sandwich in an alley while Nazi POWS were allowed to sit inside the cafe and eat.

Veteran? Great! Wait, you’re a gay veteran? Fuck off and die.

How does that make any sense?

Romney - Genuine politician (not a compliment, but best of a bad lot).

Cain - Publicity stunt on behalf of Herman Cain.

Gingrich - Doesn’t get out the primaries, plus, also unpallatable to most people in the Gingrich family.

Santorum - How he is still forming a creer, let alone two coherent sentences without remarking in a creepy level on Gods Glory and the Gay Mafia is worthy or props.

Huntsman - Mr Anonymous gets swept because he lacks personality and is far too easily poirtrayed as spurned. Probably a nice guy, with a decent grip on issues, but can’t be himself until the General (which he won’t make).

Bachmann - Loon.

Paul - Loon.

I don’t want to take anything away from the individuals in the streets that are literally risking life, limb, and so much more to take on the regimes they have spent generations under……..

But I think this President has played an important role. By reaching out to the younger more moderate muslims it has completely taken off the table the narrative of these regimes that the US and the western world is completely responsible for the shit hole that so many of these countries have become under these dictators.

When you remove the US as the boogeyman and the citizens of those countries realize their lives haven’t changed, then they begin to blame those who are truly responsible……their own leaders.

Again, I don’t want to overstate the role that the US and this President have played……but the same Arab youth that were burning American flags the past decade are now the ones taking to the streets against those truly responsible for their misery: their own leaders.

re: #218 mr.fusion

Dude went to Cairo and lectured the Arab leaders about the dangers of oppression before this shit went down.

Dudes prescient.

I know there has been controversy about the promotion of democracy in recent years, and much of this controversy is connected to the war in Iraq. So let me be clear: no system of government can or should be imposed upon one nation by any other.

That does not lessen my commitment, however, to governments that reflect the will of the people. Each nation gives life to this principle in its own way, grounded in the traditions of its own people. America does not presume to know what is best for everyone, just as we would not presume to pick the outcome of a peaceful election.

But I do have an unyielding belief that all people yearn for certain things: the ability to speak your mind and have a say in how you are governed; confidence in the rule of law and the equal administration of justice; government that is transparent and doesn’t steal from the people; the freedom to live as you choose.

Those are not just American ideas, they are human rights, and that is why we will support them everywhere.

There is no straight line to realise this promise. But this much is clear: governments that protect these rights are ultimately more stable, successful and secure. Suppressing ideas never succeeds in making them go away. America respects the right of all peaceful and law-abiding voices to be heard around the world, even if we disagree with them. And we will welcome all elected, peaceful governments – provided they govern with respect for all their people.

Buried beneath a blood-red cloud… a bright, shining monument luring treasure hunters to their doom. An illusion that you can begin again, change your fortunes. Finding it, though, that’s not the hard part. It’s letting go.

Old World Blues:

Doctor Mobius: There is an expression in the Wasteland: “Old World Blues.”

Doctor Klein: It refers to those so obsessed with the past they can’t see the present, much less the future, for what it is.

Doctor Dala: They stare into the what-was, eyes like pilot lights, guttering and spent, as the realities of their world continue on around them.

Doctor O: Science is a long, steady progression into the future. What may seem a sudden event often isn’t felt for years, even centuries, to come.

I’m just picking them because of the Baroness

She hasn’t entered the race yet, but seeing how Perry’s dropping the ball I think it’s about time for her to ride in on a golden-antlered caribou.

I’m beginning to think the Fallout DLCs are trying to say something to me:

Dead Money

Old World Blues:

The first example says to me that you didn’t make an effort to save Christine. Get your ass back there and do it right!

Wow. Terrible debate. Terrible candidates. Perry absolutely tanked. Makes GWB look like frickin Einstein.

I’ve watched breakthroughs (my poor 3 year old Vista Laptop would curl up and die if I tried to put New Vegas on it), and remember some of the various ending pieces.

I’m beginning to realize that, politically, I’m far more brutal than just about anybody I’ve met my age, except for the one Geography Major numbnuts I heard today that called Obama the Antichrist.

You haven’t gotten me real angry about something political. ;) Not even regarding Libya.

Yeah, it’s funny that as cynical as I’ve become, I still can’t bring myself to be evil in video games. No matter how much I may hate it or myself for doing it, I always work to get the best “good” endings possible.

In terms of political rhetoric, when not on LGF, I tend to be beyond brutal. Joshua Graham brutal. I’ve more than once questioned someone’s faith because of a political position (most likely on the poor, but also on issues of tolerance).

I also can not bring my self to being evil in Video Games.

In Red Dead Redemption, before the “first” ending I try to be as “good” as possible. Given the events that happen afterward, then I get “evil.”

More power to ya. I’ve grown rather alarmed at the general malaise that has settled over people where politics are concerned, except when it’s time to gripe about how “bad” things are and how nobody’s doing anything to fix it.

I personally know people who do.

Johnson is pretty funny.. If he doesn’t get elected I could see him doing a half hour sitcom on the comedy channel

He recycles his lines too often. If I have to hear that “I started a one-man handyman business in Albuquerque” opening again, I am going to punch the wall.
