If Your Website’s Full of Assholes, It’s Your Fault

How to not let loons dominate
Blogosphere • Views: 53,150

This is an excellent post by Anil Dash, on what site owners need to do if they don’t want to end up with a website full of assholes.

He’s actually enumerating many of the principles that have helped LGF become a place for valuable discussion. I used to believe in a laissez faire approach to comments (although outright racial slurs were never allowed or welcomed); for years I believed the best way to prevent offensive behavior was to trust the community to police itself.

I still believe this to some extent; a good online community does police itself, but the key is that self-policing fails if the truly obsessed and deranged anonymous haters are not kept out. The reason is simple: the Internet troll personality is more compulsive and more persistent than normal personalities, and who wants to have a “discussion” with people who spew racial slurs and post all-caps rants by the hundreds?

Implementing some of these measures is not easy, and not without cost — both monetary and personal — but if you don’t, I’ve learned the hard way that the crazies will inevitably take over and drive away decent people with important things to say.

You should have real humans dedicated to monitoring and responding to your community. One of the easiest ways to ensure valuable contributions on your site is to make people responsible by having dedicated, engaged, involved community moderators who have the power to delete comments and ban users (in the worst case) but also to answer questions and guide conversations for people who are unsure of appropriate behavior (in the best cases). Sites that do this, like MetaFilter and Stack Exchange sites (disclosure, I’m a proud board member of Stack Exchange) get good results. Those that don’t, don’t. If you can’t afford to invest the time or money in grooming and rewarding good community moderators? Then maybe don’t have comments. And keep in mind: You need lots of these moderators. The sites with the best communities have a really low ratio of community members to moderators.

You should have community policies about what is and isn’t acceptable behavior. Your community policy should be short, written in plain language, easily accessible, and phrased in flexible terms so people aren’t trying to nitpick the details of the rules when they break them. And then back them up with significant consequences when people break them: Either temporary or permanent bans on participation.

Your site should have accountable identities. No, people don’t have to use their real names, or log in with Google or Facebook or Twitter unless you want them to. But truly anonymous commenting often makes it really easy to have a pile of shit on your website, especially if you don’t have dedicated community moderators. When do newspapers publish anonymous sources? When the journalists know the actual identity and credibility of the person, and decide it is a public good to protect their identity. You may wish to follow the same principles, or you can embrace one of my favorite methods of identity: Persistent pseudonyms. Let users pick a handle that is attached to all of their contributions in a consistent way where other people can see what they’ve done on the site. Don’t make reputation a number or a score, make it an actual representation of the person’s behavior. And of course, if appropriate, don’t be afraid to attach people’s real names to their comments and contributions. But you’ll find “real” identities are no cure for assholes showing up in your comments if you aren’t following the rest of the principles described here.

You should have the technology to easily identify and stop bad behaviors. If you have a community that’s of decent size, it can be hard for even a sufficient number of moderators to read every single conversation thread. So a way for people to flag behavior that violates guidelines, and a simple set of tools for allowing moderators to respond quickly and appropriately, are a must-have so that people don’t get overwhelmed.

You should make a budget that supports having a good community, or you should find another line of work. Every single person who’s going to object to these ideas is going to talk about how they can’t afford to hire a community manager, or how it’s so expensive to develop good tools for managing comments. Okay, then save money by turning off your web server. Or enjoy your city where you presumably don’t want to pay for police because they’re so expensive.

tl;dr: The tools are there. But you have to be willing to engage and use them. There is no sensible auto-pilot technical solution to deal with what are essentially social problems.

My ex-friend Rick the videographer was fond of saying that assholes were the master race but, as an asshole himself, he could naturally be expected to make that claim.

It's simple to me in my years of observing blogs and internet forums. People will say crap on those that they wouldn't dare say in real life. A lot of keyboard warriors and Internet tough guys who wouldn't dream to say the shit they say behind a keyboard face to face with someone. Yahoo in my opinion has some of the nastiest bigots you'll ever see perhaps because getting a Yahoo account is so easy. It's my understanding AOL is the same way.

Breitbart doesn't quite seem to understand the irony of his threat to go back through the old "right wing" LGF threads to find hateful and over the top comments. Banning that language was the first step towards lgf no longer being a "right wing" blog.

AOL actually institutionalized derp on the internet. It's been September for a long, long time now.

Food sources attract flies. They see shit as a food source. Breitbart's followers see his site as a source as well. The metaphor still applies.

re: #7 Killgore Trout

I recall Charles made it clear once he began the registration process way back in the day that it was all part of a process to weed out the bigoted, racist, and vile comments, and to help the community police itself.

Yahoo and other similar entities have never bothered to monitor and police their groups, and part of the problem is the size and scope of AOL or Yahoo monitoring all those millions of users.

Breitbart would rather we all ignore that his site has these kinds of tools at its disposal and opts not to use them.

It's quick, it's easy, it's (If you want it to be) basically anonymous, it's effectively unmoderated, it's high traffic for all sorts of users, and there aren't really any repercussions for being an asshole or worse. Basically the worst possible combination.

I remember those years well, Charles. Anil has been an acquaintance of mine, from his before-Six-Apart years. He knows what he's talking about; of course, so do you.

You should make a budget that supports having a good community, or you should find another line of work.

Anybody know the deep pockets behind Breitbart's Online Empire of Bigots? Somebody ought to let them know..

Breitbart doesn't ask why his website attracts so many racists? why so many assholes?

It's one thing to remove nastiness from your comments, and another to discourage them in the first place. He's clearly uninterested in either.

Speaking of assholes - I just received a FW:FW:FW: etc. email from my eldest sister called 'The Grey Haired Brigade' - heavy on the 'Socialism and Evil' rhetoric, with a dash of 'We The People' thrown in.

I replied to all, telling them to leave me out of their little party. Unfortunately, they never seem to leave me of the FW list for long and I need to remind them to leave me the hell alone every so often.

re: #19 RabbitRunner

Odd that you've got view. Comments generally meander from their original point pretty quickly across sites - regardless of whether they're monitored or not but some websites tend to develop their own netiquette, and there are some things that LGFers have generally held to:

Keep on topic through at least the first 100 posts. Spinoffs/links/pages were developed to let the main post going off on a tangent and giving more space for posters to get other subjects discussed.

Try to keep attacks from getting personal;
Avoid the trolls - and know how to distinguish 'em from posters who merely have a different POV;
Have fun; and
Maybe learn something...

33 iossarian  Mon, Sep 26, 2011 12:56:08pm

LGF thread decision tree (increment by 1 unless otherwise instructed):

1) Shiny New Thread!
2) Is the story about the Koch brothers? If no, goto 3, if yes, goto 6.
3) Buck arrives, makes comment
4) Pile on Buck
5) Continue Buck-bashing with more or less enthusiasm (repeat 5 or goto 1)
6) Complain about Koch brothers
7) Agree that the US would be better if there were less corporate funding of elections (flip a coin, if heads, goto 3, if tails, continue)
8) Slow pace of comments to 1 every 3 minutes
9) Ask question about recipe/diy project/home economics
10) Slow pace of comments yet further
11) Goto 1.

And really, it's not like LGF is heavily moderated. Sure, registration has limited windows, known trolls are banned/blocked if possible, and comments that are over the line are removed, but it's not like some places where many/all comments are screened before being posted. Here, once you register you can pretty much comment however you want on whatever you want whenever you want, so long as you behave.

I was fortunate enough to find a non-moderated community that didn't devolve into a pile of shit for many years. Oh, we had a couple of trolls but few engaged them and the trolls were on most everybody's ignore list. It was a great place to hang.

Unfortunately, it turned out that a couple of people there were the glue that held the place together. One of them, a lesbian Republican, died suddenly of a heart attack. It was a measure of how important the place had been to me in that telling the board about her death was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. I still go once a year into the memorial thread I started and leave virtual roses.

The board started showing signs of strain after that. My deceased friend had set a standard of graciousness and courtesy that others consciously or unconsciously adhered to. Those standards started to slip and the board started to be a less pleasant place to visit.

Then came the election of 2008 and the place collapsed. The 'conservatives' turned really nasty, and many of the 'liberals' responded in kind. A few became outright Tea Partiers and they didn't even pretend to be anything but hateful.

People, including me, fled like refugees from a battlefield.

I go back occasionally, but the place is rather desolate now. Not even a shadow of its former self.

An object lesson, in my opinion, of how boards should have a standard of behaviour and monitored to maintain those standards.

Derb is reasonable and doesn't use the same worn out talk radio level cliches that most right wingers use. Up until the late 60s, the NYT editorial standard required that non-news photographs, such as the many advertisements in the weekend Fashion section, would not show belly-buttons. They were religiously airbrushed out of lingerie and swimsuit shots. Someone challenged the practice, and no one could remember why they did it, so they stopped.

I've learned that in any community, real or virtual, you have to earn respect and pay your dues.

On another site I frequent I started off as a simply a normal commenter. I made a point of not posting stupid/hateful/derogatory stuff and contributing to the discussion. Eventually I became a moderator and now I'm a senior moderator. I appreciate the experience of having earned that.

It's the same with LGF. I finally caught a registration window, then posted a few comments here and there and then when the pages came in I started posting those. I'm still a relative newbie but I like to think I've earned some respect as a poster who at least treats everyone with respect.

I treat my online conversations on sites like LGF the same way I view a talk with a friend.

I am VERY thankful for a site like LGF. It's one of the few places online I've found that has good, interesting, sane discussion about politics and also features both left and right leaning members.

If you want to see example of how to do comments wrong, go to youtube. It so bad over there it makes Yahoo look classy.

The Dutch music world lost a giant today. Harry Muskee, lead singer of blues band Cuby & the Blizzards died after a long sickness today at the age of 70. One of his better known pieces was "Windows of my eyes" of which below is posted a bit more modern version. The pictures accompanying the music are pictures of the late 19th, early 20th century of the harsh existence in the peat colonies of the north eastern part of the Netherlands. Back then it was a very poor existence, and it's where Harry was born. Needless to say there was inspiration enough.

Your community policy should be short, written in plain language, easily accessible, and phrased in flexible terms so people aren’t trying to nitpick the details of the rules when they break them. And then back them up with significant consequences when people break them: Either temporary or permanent bans on participation.

That's not a bad idea as a template for the legal code. Laws should be like that too. Now of course the whole big system is more complicated than blogs, and we can't have the death penalty for any significant infraction of the laws. But the point remains: laws should be easy to understand, it should be easy to know what the law says, fairly easy to guess a rough approximation to what the law would be if you can't access the text before you have to make a decision, and rather hard to get out of paying the price if you do break the law.

How is anybody supposed to conform their conduct to a law that runs to thousands or tens of thousands of pages? The compliance costs, even if it were within mortal power to comprehend and then comply, become astronomical. And then there's enforcement problems. How do you persuade a jury that the law has been violated? Not one of the twelve will be able to read the law, end to end. And the law will not be a compendium of stand-alone provisions, each 1 page long. It will be massively and maybe even recursively self referential. At that point, by saying too much, in effect it says either nothing, or it says whatever whoever owns the judge says it says.

re: #125 makeitstop

Don't forget his creepy fascination with 'Lolita.'

There's a book, "Reading Lolita in Tehran". The point of that book is that reading Lolita doesn't amount to admiring Humbert. That the study of literature is the study of humanity, warts and worse, through the lens of fiction.

The most heartbreaking episode in the whole book is where Lolita is playing tennis, and she volleys, she runs, etc., but she cannot, simply cannot, even try to win. She's out there, all youth and fluid grace, and she's broken. Dang.

Nabokov's Lolita is a top-notch novel.

C.S. Lewis' Screwtape Letters is, in some ways, doing the same thing. Lewis channels "nasty" and gives you the up-close skinny of it, seen from inside the mind of a demon.

Humbert surpasses the demon in evil simply because he had it in him, as the demon didn't, to be good. He had some depth.

Not saying, mind you, that the demon is real. Neither is Humbert. It's fiction, but fiction provides a good window into some aspects of how real humans behave. Sad but true.

If that's the case, then it would seem that Boehner's the one that caved, as the 48 Tea Party hold-outs were demanding even deeper cuts than he was willing to put forth. That's not what TalkingPointsMemo is reporting:

It looks like the threat of a government shutdown, and the possibility that FEMA will run out of money this week, will be averted.

On the Senate floor late Monday, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) announced an agreement by which the Senate (and presumably the House) can dispense with all the sturm und drang about offsetting disaster aid and pass legislation that will keep the government open after September.

re: #249 Decatur Deb

Can't tell for sure from the article, but this could end in tears.

Oh, that's a given, as there's no way to truly make either side happy. Boehner's choices were:

1. Deeper cuts to please the Tea Partiers, whose consequences I already mentioned.

2. Abide by the Democrats demands for the offsets to be dropped, which would have won them over but further damaged his control over the caucus.

3. Dropped the disaster relief portion of the Continuing Resolution and taken it up as a separate bill, which turns it into a debate over the amount of funding that's to be appropriated, but also removes the cover of making it a budgetary issue if it fails to pass.

Sounds like he might have gone with Choice 2, but we'll know for sure if Cantor greets the vote by whining to the press.

Oh, that's good! Now Obama should simply take their guns and that will mean he's not taking them. I mean, it's clear as a day.

It has become a sign of thoughtful anti-naivety to embrace as many Obama conspiracy theories as possible.

Had Obama had anything to do with the moon landings we would all know the truth of the fraud. We'd also all know aliens by name.

"Naturally one can't characterize the traders as deranged," Noll told SPIEGEL. "But for example, they behaved more egotistically and were more willing to take risks than a group of psychopaths who took the same test."

Particularly shocking for Noll was the fact that the bankers weren't aiming for higher winnings than their comparison group. Instead they were more interested in achieving a competitive advantage. Instead of taking a sober and businesslike approach to reaching the highest profit, "it was most important to the traders to get more than their opponents," Noll explained. "And they spent a lot of energy trying to damage their opponents."

I think LGF has evolved for the better, and one of the reasons is the LGF pages. Because of the variety of interests and perspectives represented on the right side of the site, it is a blog that faithfully represents it's users. If I have heard enough about domestic social issues, I can post a thread on Iran. And if nobody gives a shit about my topic, I just scan the items on the right and generally find some good reading. It is actually a very credible news site as well.

Psychopaths 'R Us. (Beat Steve to it.)

Securitas Security Services, USA
My security guard friend used to work for this mob and we briefly employed them at my building. One guy they sent out was arrested for breaking windows at the neighboring building. Another, a supervisor, assaulted a fellow guard who cursed back at him when he called the guard an SOB. Yet another Securitas supervisor was quite literally the most hostile person I have ever run across. I had heard complaints that he would glare and shake his fists at everyone who approached him. I did so and asked him what was wrong. He sneered, "Maybe you could just identify yourself." I said my name and added, "I own the place and you have ten seconds to get the hell out of here. Otherwise, it's a matter of gravity and chance which hits the pavement first, you ugly ass or your stinking badge." Btw, this psycho was about 70 years old. They boasted that they give people a psych profile when they go to work. They didn't mention that if someone comes back as "violent sociopath" they are promoted to management.

That sounds much like my upbringing. We used to get booted out of the house in the morning and only returned long enough to grab food then head out again. We lived on the edge of the city so there were large uninhabited areas to romp around. There was an abandoned farm yard just north of us and an orchard just west. Just south of that was the dumping zone for topsoil from the houses they were building. There were dozens of little 5' tall hills. Wars aplenty. I was well armed with my 'Have Gun will Travel' revolvers and derringers, and my Johnny Seven weapon.

As a person new here, thank you for this post. It helps a lot to understand why the members here, the Lizards, demand what they do from new people like me. I am not posting much, trying to catch up to a lot of you, and making sure that when I do post, it is worth reading.

From your mouth to G-d's ear. . .I think the Lions are one to something this year- they beat my Packers last year, and have always been a force to reckon with. . .they bring their extra large can of whoop ass for the Packers. . .and they USE it:)
