Rick Perry’s N-Word Hunting Ranch

Gimme that old time racism
Politics • Views: 31,967

The Washington Post leads today with a story about Rick Perry’s hunting camp, where he entertained his good ol’ boy right wing Texan political allies on numerous occasions.

The name of the ranch: “Niggerhead.”

Paint Creek, Tex. — In the early years of his political career, Rick Perry began hosting fellow lawmakers, friends and supporters at his family’s secluded West Texas hunting camp, a place known by the name painted in block letters across a large, flat rock standing upright at its gated entrance.

“Niggerhead,” it read.

Ranchers who once grazed cattle on the 1,070-acre parcel on the Clear Fork of the Brazos River called it by that name well before Perry and his father, Ray, began hunting there in the early 1980s. There is no definitive account of when the rock first appeared on the property. In an earlier time, the name on the rock was often given to mountains and creeks and rock outcroppings across the country. Over the years, civil rights groups and government agencies have had some success changing those and other racially offensive names that dotted the nation’s maps.

But the name of this particular parcel did not change for years after it became associated with Rick Perry, first as a private citizen, then as a state official and finally as Texas governor. Some locals still call it that. As recently as this summer, the slablike rock — lying flat, the name still faintly visible beneath a coat of white paint — remained by the gated entrance to the camp.

Herman Cain wasted no time trying to use this revelation against Perry, and at Fox News, commenters agree that this means Cain is a racist. Yes, really.

In B4 "It's traditional!!!"

This kind of thing is telling because it shows how far below his radar even the idea of racial awareness is. Perry just can't be bothered to notice or care.

Denials in three, two, one and...

the following statement was issued by Ray Sullivan, communications director, RickPerry.org, Inc.
"A number of claims made in the story are incorrect, inconsistent, and anonymous, including the implication that Rick Perry brought groups to the lease when the word on the rock was still visible. The one consistent fact in the story is that the word on a rock was painted over and obscured many years ago.

"Governor Perry and his family never owned, controlled or managed the property referenced in the Washington Post story. The 42,000-acre ranch is owned by the Hendricks Home for Children, a West Texas charity.

"Perry’s father painted over offensive language on a rock soon after leasing the 1,000-acre parcel in the early 1980s. When Governor Perry was party to the hunting lease from 1997 to 2007, the property was described as northern pasture. He has not been to the property since 2006.

“In 1991 the Texas Legislature passed a bill to rename old, offensive place names."

I'm happy to see Cain and some others in the GOP carry the water on this one until the entire story comes out. If in fact Perry's dad noticed the sign and had it painted over promptly that's quite a different story than if it stayed for years.
It's more a sign of a carry over from a era when the early settlers though a calling black rock out cropping that name was OK, then someone using that name in recent years. The name is certainly more egregious than calling the Washington team the Redskins, but is more a sign of the racial climate of that era than outright racism IMHO.
If his dad saw the rock in the 80's, was appalled and painted over it, it's a non story, if not, well....

Somewhere out in West Texas, SUV's are racing out to a rock on a ranch.

Some have paint, some have cameras.....stay tuned!

19 jaunte  Sun, Oct 2, 2011 11:41:37am

HotAir calling the story a "media witch hunt."

...The land in question was leased, originally by his father, with the governor adding his name to the lease in later years. They no longer rent the property and never owned it. According to his response to the Washington Post, the first time he saw the rock – decades ago – he found it offensive and pointed it out to his father. It was then painted over and put out of sight.

Assuming that’s the truth, Perry has absolutely nothing to worry about and the Washington Post will have egg on its face again for looking like they’re cooking up a witch hunt against a GOP frontrunner.

Since the ranch is near a place called "Paint Creek" it would make sense to have "Paint Creek" in the name of the ranch. You could also call it Rick's Place.

Since I'm close a senior citizen, I recall what at the time was what I considered was the "innocent" use of the N word. i.e. the ini mini miny moe poem, and the name "N" toe for a nut. In the 50's, it never occurred to correct anyone to speak out in those examples, but I would today. Much the same could be said about old place names that are offensive. The entire key is, was it tolerated recently, now that we know better. BTW, I still cheer for the Redskins, you'll never convince it has any racist intent.

The Post is citing a lot of interviews with people. Unless it's making them all up, the name has been visible on the rock quite frequently, and often the people themselves thought that it would come up one day and harm him.

I find it kind of unlikely that the Post is just making up those interviews. I do find it possible that they slapped some paint on it and they just didn't give a shit when the paint faded and the word was again visible.

That would actually make a good metaphor for the GOP race relations as a whole. Back under Bush the elder and then Bush the second, there were some minor attempts at being more pluralistic and less racist. Then the wingnuts took over, and the racism is showing through again.

In other news, the Rose Reading Room in the NYC public library is AWESOME.

That's the entire point, if Perry's story about it being painted over years ago holds up, no harm, no foul. If someone comes forward with proof that he lied, or made recent trips there with the name visible, he's S O L.

It makes me uncomfortable when my black friends use it, it really does. But the use of a word by an in-group is totallly different from it being used by the majority group. I certainly think there are uses by black people that are, actually, racist, just like I think the term 'oreo' and other crap like that are racist.

But that doesn't mean that the more common uses of it in the black community are racist. I may find it in bad taste, but if they really think that it's racist they need to actually listen to rap songs rather than just waiting to hear the word they want to so badly.

Luap Nor -- popular in internet polls, can't get real votes for shit
Huntsman -- too Mormon, resigned his governorship to work with the Seekrit Mooslim Overlord
Gingrich -- LOL forever

For the candidates that keep being thrown around as possible late entries:

Huckabee -- batshit crazy theocrat
Chris Christie -- doesn't hate Muslims, is pro-civil union and pro-gun control, would be the butt of fat jokes more than anything else
Palin -- HAHAHAHAHAHA

Yeah, I used to hear that in Boston all the time. "I jewed the guy down on the deal." It's seriously one of the reasons I left. That town is so whitebred. It's more than whitebread. It's mayo on buttered white bread.

I had a client here tell me a contractor said 'jewed me' in a conversation to him, pretty much ended the job prospect. Mr Client didn't take it as a compliment.

I'm sure Jewish rappers say 'jewed' all the time.

Not the point. Relevant comparison would be iTunes, where artists get paid much more for plays than on Spotify.

Legal music is legal music.

Itunes is overpriced in the market.

I used to use a service called e-music.com where for $7 a month i got 50 downloads from white stripes and most of the indies.
Similar tracks from artists on itunes were atleast three times as much.

re: #90 000G

Food for thought on Spotify: [Link: www.digitalmusicnews.com...] and [Link: www.digitalmusicnews.com...]

Yes, it is true that torrents gave no artists any money. Spotify gives all artists almost no money.

Let's discuss the economics. For a play on Spotfy.... NOW READ THIS CLOSELY..... $0.00029 is paid to the label/artist. There is the math, plain and simple! 5000 plays generates around $1.45. In comparison, 5000 track downloads at iTunes generates almost $3000. You have probably seen this article in The Guardian; over a five-month period, 1-million plays of Lady Gaga's hit 'Poker Face' earned just $167. Really.

I talk about this with my 9-year-old son; he fully understands we all have a basic right to earn a paycheck for our work. See this chart for a comparison of how much is earned via different sales formats. To earn the U.S. monthly minimum wage - $1160 - 4,053,110 plays a month are needed at Spotify. This is not a viable number for artists. It is not that we are even aiming for the minimum wage. We only desire something equitable. $0.00029 per play is not.

That's very interesting and thanks for the links. I'm in a position to recommend music sources due to my profession. I figured artists would be getting more $ than that.

On the flip side Pandora has brought me to many new artists. I'm interested to know how much they make there.

Knowing I will get flack for this, even though I find Perry a seriously flawed candidate, here is a list of things which have or had the same name as the Perry family camp:

a former British term for a black iron post for mooring ships, made from an old cannon partially buried muzzle upward, with a slightly oversize black cannonball covering the hole
a former sailors' term for an isolated coral head, notorious as navigation hazards
among some American stonemasons, a term for a large smoothly rounded stone
an antiquated term for a large round rock sticking up from the surface of a logging road, used by loggers and log truck drivers in the Pacific Northwest
an old U.S. Navy term for a small winch, a Capstan
a coal miner's term for blackish iron disulfide nodular rock occurring at the top of the coal seams, often visible in coal mine roofs. Because of their density, they can fall from the roofs, injuring or killing the miners below
an archaic term for the striking weight on a pile driver
a term for a steam manifold, fountain, turret or header on a boiler, particularly that of a locomotive

Plants and animals

"n*****head" is or was a common name for:

Carex secta, a tussock grass in New Zealand
Echinocactus polycephalus, the n*****head cactus, native to California and Arizona
Echinacea, or coneflower, colloquially called "Kansas n*****head" or "wild n*****head"
Nasutitermes graveolus, the n*****head termite, native to Australia
Rudbeckia hirta, a flowering plant in the family Asteraceae
hard tussocks in the tundra, esp. in Alaska

Places

"n*****head" is part of the name of:

n***** Head, an island in North Queensland, Australia

Please note:

I am NOT condoning the camp name, it is repulsive. However, Perry didn't name it, and the word has been around a lot longer than many people realize.

Do you know what really annoys me about "White Heritage?"

My ancestors didn't eat lutefisk.

My husband's ancestors didn't speak German.

And yet we have the same "heritage." Why don't these people actually bother to learn about European cultures? The clothes, the food (okay, you can skip the lutefisk), the music. My ancestors didn't eat lutefisk.

I never got why with so many awesome things to celebrate in white culture-- the Enlightenment, Shakespeare, the cathedrals of Europe, the cure for polio, etc. etc.-- a lot of people just want to celebrate the time when a bunch of white guys went to war because they wanted to keep owning black people as slaves forever.

I was talking about that here a couple months ago--some guy was doing the "Pout, pout, if you take away our big Confederate flags, the South has NOTHING. Everyone else gets something."

Dude was from Virginia. I mean, effing Virginia. Cradle of the Revolution, anyone? But no, he needed the Confederate flag to make him feel as though his state amounted to anything.

Southern Heritage was not just about owning black slaves, it was about...oh, I don't know, cotton and shit, and really big ass moustaches. And a bunch of other important stuff, I just don't have it all in front of me right now.

We went to Gettysburg on a class trip. Each of us had to give a 3 minute talk on a general or something that happened. There's a classic Society for Creative Anachronism legend. The SCA recreates medieval cultures (mostly European), including war fighting. Story goes that one on occasion a big red-headed dude in loving recreated samurai armor went running across the field and encountered an Asian fighter wearing a kilt and blue war-paint--and both keeled over laughing.

Don't know if it's true, but it certainly describes the ethnic chaos that is the SCA.

(Most of the Asian kids I know who do the Renaissance Faire have adopted the convention of explaining that their mother is Welsh.)

Greek Gov’t to Lay Off 30,000 Workers

Things are not going well in Greece. On Sunday, the government of Prime Minister George Papandreou announced that it would be laying of 30,000 state employees—or, rather, placing them in a “reserve” poll that allows them to be put on partial pay and then fired after one year. At the same time, Athens announced that it will not meet deficit targets set the by EU and the IMF. In 2011, Greece’s deficit will be 8.5 percent of its GDP, off by almost a full percentage point from the target of 7.6 percent. Deficit rates will come up short in 2012 as well.

Sigh. Beyond the link is yet another Fox Nation hatefest. The story itself is about Obama speaking at a Human Rights Campaign dinner. A sampling of the comments:

The new leader of Sodom and Gomorrah. If you live a life of immorality, Obama's your friend. If you're a Christian who trys to live a life for Christ, the ACLU and the leftwing lunatics are your enemy. This is not the America that most people I know, want to be associated with. San Francisco values are for Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Obama.

...

and the voters will remove the liberal disease in 2012... the majority of the nation are independents who could care less if mexifornia falls into the pacific as that is a lost state... they would probably actually applaud it... and as for values, the majority of Americans would like nothing more than to return to that which the Founding Fathers established; a Christian, determined patriotic America with AMERICAN base values and sending the libs packing... which we WILL do... enjoy the ride... it is coming in 2012!

...

Human Rights Campaign is SOROS..........This is just the puppet (obama) answering to his MASTER (soros) and USING an entertainer (gaga) to advance the LIBERAL AND GAY AGENDA.

...

It will be days before the GAYS start TRYING TO ABUSE THE MILITARY COURTS TO ADVANCE THEIR SPECIAL RIGHTS.

IT WILL BE QUITE FUNNY

...

Trash talking to trash...........

...

I'm sorry but sexually deviant behavior is not a "human right". You watch...mark my words...pedophiles will soon be exerting their claim that their "love" for children is no different than that of a gay persons "right" to "love" someone of the same sex...and that we are violating "their human rights" to love. In the mind of the left there is nothing that is morally wrong...except our laws, our religion, and our morals. And this whole issue of "equal rights has nothing to with a "lifestyle"...because that's nothing but a false premise to begin with...it has everything to do with political power, benefits...and money.

...

This just in - Scientists working on an a n a l implant for gay men to allow them to reproduce, report shitty results. More to come.

The soldier wasn't booed, his homosaxuality was. A person has the right to set their own moral standards, and they have a right to stand up and voice them, the gov has NO right to decide what is or isn't morally acceptable for any citizen. I give 4 boos to Barry. So does that make me a racist, a homophobe, or just someone that won't let Barry decide for me what I can like or dislike? He's going to need another law to stop me from disliking him.

First Rock Concert in Afghanistan in Thirty Years

Live rock returned to Afghanistan after three long decades on Saturday as young men and women cheered and leapt into the air to the sound of heavy bass beats and punk rock.

Bands from Australia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Afghanistan served up a six-hour musical feast of blues, indie, electronica and death metal to hundreds of fans, many of whom had never seen live music before.

Its a terrible term. The family claims they renamed the ranch in 1983; but eight people say they could still make out the original outlines on the painted-over rock. Or did the witnesses actually see the name in bold paint? Are there pictures of this? It seems like a bit of a nontroversy if attempts were made to change it by renaming the ranch and painting over the name, especially since people of all political leanings still flock to Squaw Valley CA to ski....perhaps since that is an official name, more energy should be put into pushing the state to force a change there.

I had the game on as background noise and, as a Detroit sports fan, that was a nice comeback from the Lions (thanks to the Cowboys blowing it). Now I have the ALDS on with the Tigers v Yankees on, and the Tigers are now leading NY 4-0 in the top of the 6th. Now the Yankees are changing pitchers. If the Tigers win, it will tie the series up at 1 each.

For Detroit sports fans, this could be a good day.

"Squaw" is not in the same class as the infamous "n word," for various reasons. For one thing, it is a legitimate loan word from various Algonquian dialects, identical in meaning to the transliteration, that is "a woman." It remains controversial because of its common use among racists as a disparaging term for indigenous women of any group. It does have defenders in the indigenous community. Not surprisingly, these are mostly Algonquian women.

Apart from the linguistic debate, the word "squaw" has become offensive to many modern Native Americans because of usage that demeans Native women, ranging from condescending images (e.g., picture postcards depicting "Indian squaw and papoose") to racialized epithets (Green 1975). It is similar in tone to the words "Negress" and "Jewess," (Adams 2000) which treat ethnic women as if they were second-class citizens or exotic objects.

Some Native women have attempted to address this problem by calling attention to what they consider the appropriate indigenous context of this word (Bruchac 1999, Palmer 2001). During a featured panel discussion titled "Squaw: Algonkian Linguistics and Colonial Politics" at the "All Women of Red Nations" Women's Studies Conference at Southern Connecticut State University in 2001, Native women from the Abenaki, Schaghticoke, and Wampanoag tribes stressed the need for accurate understandings of colonial histories, and respect for linguistic differences, to avoid misrepresenting and disrespecting Algonquian language recovery efforts (Bruchac, Fermino, and Richmond 2001).

Personally, I would favor eliminating it from western place names since these are usually very remote from any kind of Algonquian cultural connection.

There's not one. If she buys from a designer store, she's an elitist. If she bought from Target or Wal-Mart, she's pandering. If she bought something from a thrift store or secondhand shop, the really vile racist shit would be heaped on even more.

We used to have a Target a twenty-minute walk or a short bus ride from the house. I really liked it.

They moved, and now we have a big Safeway, which is OK, except they shut down the littler Safeway that was two blocks from our house.

It should be eliminated, along with all instances still extant of nword for any locale or geological feature, the ch*nk word for any locale or geological feature, and any such race-based epithet in connection with same. Where I grew up, chinese pheasants are still referred to by the federal government as ch*nks, for instance.
Your researched response is weak, and you seem to be making the same argument some of these idiots make that the nword is okay for everyone's use because some subset of the offended group has tried to legitimatize it. In other words, by your measure, the nword has its defenders, too.
My point is, the s-word is in common usage by government agencies and businesses, despite much outrage from my family and many many other indigenous people. To wring your collective hands over a colloquial name that was changed by the family 30 years ago, even if it may still be visible under a coat of paint in the right light, is the definition of selective outrage. I absolutely do not support Perry, but this is a ridiculous thing, like trying to paint biden as a racist for his "clean and articulate" comment.

and in the parlance of the west, when occupied by white men, it is also almost certainly not a neutral term. The consistent rule we all seem to have embraced for how racial, cultural or gender-based terminology should be treated is that if the members of the population the term refers to are offended by its use, then the word should be abandoned, even when the term is a descriptor for a location, feature, item, or even an action. the term "indian-giver" has thankfully passed from common usage, while the terms "gypped" or "welshed" seem to be active. NwordToe nuts was a terrible term, and has now died out, while Turks head squash can still be found in supermarket ads and placards.

You are making a fool of yourself with this strained attempt at false equivalence. The terms N****r and c***k are not etymologically legitimate loan words from any language, let alone those of the people to whom they refer. That is a huge difference, and the reason "squaw" has defenders among indigenous Americans.
