Good News: Amazon Reinstates California Associates’ Accounts

Just in time for the holidays
Lifestyle • Views: 33,432

I just received a welcome email from Amazon: they are officially reopening the Amazon Associates program for California residents. (The Associates program has never been a major source of income for LGF, but every bit helps.)

For more information, here’s Amazon’s Associates Re-Enrollment FAQ.

The one disappointment is that they’re not going to pay fees for referrals during the time the accounts were closed.

I’ll be restoring our Amazon links soon…

I really hate that there are no 2 letter words containing "c" in Scrabble or Words with Friends and Strangers.

My wife's cousin's kid just facebooked his "kill ratio" for some video game (kills 15, deaths 0, K/D ratio: 15.00) I posted, "Don't divide by zero!"

I figure it's good for a 10 year old to learn a new internet meme...

A lot of non-profits in California were relying on the Associates program to help them pay the bills - this will also be welcome news for them.

I found out I was the top rep for conference sales last month. That earned me a bonus, too. Helped overcome a bad weekend. Thankfully, my mother is recovering well.

AB.. what a porcine egomaniacal joke.

I really can't wait to see what Sherrod's attorneys leave of that bit of racist, race baiting, lying crap.

He is so sensitive whenever his propaganda is called out! He's his very own little mini-truth. Yet, he is so weak that he has to take web vengeance on some dude in a cafe who dared to not kiss his fat ass. How dare anyone oppose his many lies, smears and bullshit! What picking on innocent black women got boring?

But fools and gutter trash like Andy are transitory... LGF is not that only place that has his number, and legally, his days are numbered also. When the attorney's are through with his useless, ugly, souless self, he'll be lucky to have the shirt (I mean tent) left on his back.

He'll fade, but I doubt Sherrod's lawyers will be the ones to take him down. Libel law in the US heavily favors the defendant. Sherrod will face a very steep climb.

That's "Little Andrew Breitbart"...Lawrence used the phrase at least three times...I think he wants people to begin thinking "little" in relation to AB as much as possible...I think we should oblige him. Maybe Charles can start referring to him as "Little Andrew Breitbart" in his titles, like he does with Shrieking Harpy Pamela Geller.

Yes, but AB's own words and actions coupled with a very clear attempt to smear and announcing before hand that he was looking to smear will not go well for him. In front of any jury you have a grandmotherly hard working lady who really helped a Second World War veteran after he had been shitty to her - and he goes to bat for her now - vs. a fat egomanical braggart who bragged about taking her down with a false story.

AB doesn't have a prayer if it goes to any civilized jury. Of course that is why he tried so hard to get the trial moved from DC.

So it is a permanent structure?

I always wanted to have a greenhouse... never did :-(

About the tomatoes - it's been a long time since I've grown any, but I seem to recall that there are special hybrids developed for greenhouse growing, and that grafted varieties might produce better than un-grafted.

You're right, but I don't think the case will ever get in front of a jury. Most likely it'll be dismissed. If not, it'll be settled. A trial would be too risky for Breitbart, so if he has to he'll pay Sherrod off.

It won't be dismissed. He has absolutely no grounds for a dismissal. His bogus reading of the first amendment allowing him to manufacture smears was laughed out of court.

Settling though is likely.

With what? Breitbart is a wannabe living on credit and hoping to cash in on the idiocy of the Republican base. The only way he'll be able to "pay her off" is if someone like one of the Koch brothers writes the check for him. Sherrod can drag his ass through the legal system until he begs for mercy, and he'll still give hateful screeds in GOP rallies for money while avoiding the reality which will be his financial destruction. Fuck him...he earned his hell.

It's rather a sign of Breitbart's star falling that he is being as much of a spectacle as he is. Next thing you know he'll be doing a "victory tour" on the stalker site. If and when he sinks that low, we know he is feeling the pinch.

It is, but settling is normally the smart play. Trials take years before they begin, and they are always subject to some risk. Better to just take the sure payday.

He's not alone...Palin's doing the same thing on a larger scale with Fox news. Breitbart, though, is not nearly as revenue generating as Sarah Palin is, and his net worth depends on his ability to stay more popular than the likes of Jim Hoft (imagine having to compete with Derp! and still be in trouble). I posted the other day that he has no marketable skills and couldn't get hired by Home Depot to water the plants in their garden department - which is why he's giving speeches at teabagger rallies.

His time in the public eye is limited. Enjoy watching him wither.

Are you implying Sherrod is suing him because of money? He called her a racist and got her fired from a very powerful position. She doesn't want money from that worm. She wants him to feel her pain. I hope she drags him from the bumper of the legal system for years until he begs for mercy.

There's going to be a learning curve involved in green house gardening for me. With tomatoes I think I'm just going to try Yellow pear tomatoes first. My greenhouse design is a little unique because I'm doing raised beds instead of containers. It's a little unorthodox but I think it's a better method.

Back when I took a break in my college education to work for a bee keeper, my boss would get drunk on Black Velvet (well, we all did) and he'd shout, "There's only two things that money can't buy...true love and homegrown tomatoes!"...he also would occasionally come out of his RV, shout, "I'm born to boogie!" and then pass out falling face first into the dirt.

You worked for my uncle?

With Walmart generics available, the gas money might not make the trip worthwhile. Not unless he found some friends to split with.

Generics are available WITH A PRESCRIPTION in the US...seeing the doctor costs money too...they're available without in Mexico.

I'm not suggesting going to Mexico. I'm simply saying that for the US to have "the best health care system in the world" it would have to out-provide a third world country.

Perhaps what DF means is that one doesn't sue for an apology, or a pat on the back, or a thataboy

Yes, you do sue to clear your name (for the record) but when you win you can
t even expect an apology (although one would be appropriate)

With tomatoes I think I'm just going to try Yellow pear tomatoes first. Me greenhouse design is a little unique because I'm doing raised beds instead of containers. It's a little unorthodox but I think it's a better method.

Your location will influence what's inside the greenhouse as well. At your latitude and location in NW Oregon sunlight will be a real limiting factor for growing these sub-tropical plants like tomatoes. I've not looked up the insolation numbers, but I'd bet you get only half the sunlight that southern Mexico gets. So, tomatoes, peppers, etc. might be a challenge.

I've lusted after a greenhouse for 40 years... made plans, and even was close to pulling the trigger on the property I had in SD county. Anyway, there is so much to learn - shading, ventilation, etc. With your humidity and cloudiness you'll need to watch fungus (molds), etc.

Sounds like you need a better bank.

Many, many banks offer "college plans", typically no-frills checking accounts with low/no minimum. They're handy if your scraping the bottom of your wallet. The theory is that the bank doesn't need to make money on you while your poor, but it's a good bet a relatively high proportion of college students will become wealthy, and will stay with the same bank.

Ohhh and for any who haven't seen it, Red Cliff is a work of utter genius. Be certain to get the international version with subtitles and not the American theatrical release. The real version is actually two three hour epics. The American one is condensed into two and a half hours because it is assumed that Americans will be bored by things like plot, excellent acting, history and brilliant camera work.

For those that don't know, Red Cliff is about a major battle that happened around the year 150 and was recorded in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms is one of the classic books that all educated Chinese people read. In many ways it is something like the tales of King Arthur, only there is much more historical fact to go along with the stories. There are great heroes and great villains. There are beautiful women and subtle plots. The sword fighting is accurate. The costumes are lovely and period authentic. The soundtrack is lush one of the best for any movie ever.

I can't recommend this movie enough.

For a very, very good Samurai movie. I strongly recommend 13 Assassins. It also has a strong basis in history, is well paced, well shot, brilliantly acted and has excellent sword fighting that is much more realistic than most movies.

It is about 13 samurai tasked with killing a very evil lord. One warning though, the lord involved is truly evil and there are a few disturbing scenes that establish just how much of a bastard he was.

I can't recommend this movie enough.

linky? Is it on netflix?

would I be happier with the book?

Ohh I will have to check that out...

However much I enjoy anime, anything to do with a tentacle gets much too perverse for me much too quickly.

Also a spectacular score by Kawai, with a mock-Arthurian opera at the climax. What's to hate.

So far, it looks more promising that 99% of sequels though that still doesn't mean too much. Hopefully it's good.

That was a very beautiful series. It was just the right mix of journey into adulthood and seriousness.

Hey guys... about to engage in something big tomorrow.

When I was younger the last mission of Warcraft 3 (Twilight of the Gods) kicked my ass. Granted I recall I was playing it before the expansion came out which honestly would have made me 12 or 13 at the time so my RTS skills have improved dramatically since then, or at least I've gotten a lot more experience, hell I cleared Starcraft 2 on Brutal once doing the final mission in one full setting from start to finish and I'm only playing or normal at the moment) utterly kicked my ass and I could only beat it with god mode cheats.

Now however after borrowing the game from my brother last monday I've been playing through it again (hence why I haven't been here much) and I've just reached that mission again.

45 Minutes, 4 heroes, 3 bases, and one pissed off arch demon... if I win I'll be erasing a black mark on my RTS record that's been there for a long time. Wish me luck lizards! (Though I won't be attempting till after I get home from work on Tuesday too tired for something that big tonight)

I loved the Ghost in the Shell series but I don't know Battle Royale or FLCL.

Could you tell me more about them?

FLCL is a short series, utterly weird, amazing and different from anything else out there. Battle Royale is a live action last man standing / Running Man style movie with high schoolers imprisoned on an island and forced by the government to kill each other. Chiaki Kuriyama is in it (Gogo Yubari from Kill Bill.)

170 freetoken  Mon, Oct 3, 2011 7:06:01pm

Earlier today Karl Giberson, a professor who used to be a BioLogos writer, put a piece up at FrumForum (that was reprinted in the Guardian) taking on the looniness of Bachmann's beliefs from his own Christian view:

Growing Up in Bachmann’s World

Only cause a little bit of heartburn over on FF... which is pretty good evidence that the religious fundamentalists are still at odds with some others (probably a minority) of the GOP.

And yet a Reuters piece today profiled home-schoolers and their influence on the GOP, with examples from Iowa:

Homeschoolers emerge as Republican foot soldiers

[...]

Homeschoolers got involved in politics because they had no other choice, according to one national leader.

"The establishment tried to take away our freedom," said Michael Farris, chairman of the Home School Legal Defense Association. "We became a political force because we had to protect ourselves."

Farris' group runs a program for teens that has supplied volunteers to more than 60 political campaigns since 2003. In 2008, they helped Bachmann hold onto her congressional seat in the face of a tough Democratic challenge.

An affiliated political action committee endorsed 40 congressional candidates in the last election cycle, including one who was educated at home, Jamie Herrera Buetler.

The organization raised $68,000 for Republican candidates.

"They're great allies," said Senator Jim DeMint, a leader of the party's conservative wing.

While homeschoolers span the ideological spectrum, a majority in Iowa count themselves as Christian conservatives and many say their religious beliefs are a primary reason they educate their kids at home.

Creationism -- the belief that the Earth was created in seven days and humans did not evolve from lower life forms -- is commonly taught alongside evolution, which is regarded with skepticism at best.

[...]

Are Giberson, Frum, and the rest of the rationalists/modernists clinging onto the GOP going to be able to fend off the army of home-schoolers, or will they be purged?

The best anime made is Ninja Scroll.

Yes, no doubt some otaku will get all offended, and I freely admit I am no anime expert. However, I see anime as falling into three broad categories: sex anime (Urotsukidoji), gore anime (any of the types that feature a lot of exploding heads), and art anime (Appleseed, Wings of Honneamise, etc.). It is rare to have an anime that crosses more than one of these genres. Ninja Scroll, on the other hand, is all three, and it is awesome.

Just reading the descriptions...

The Hisshou's 13" full-tang dual grind Tanto blade is YK-30 high-carbon steel, high satin finished. The long, tapered tip grind is designed for maximum slashing power combined with superior penetration. At 16.4 ounces, the Hisshou also offers superior slashing ability as compared to the Hissatsu.

These are some heavy blades. YK-30 is a very hard tool steel used to make metal punches and drill bits.

So some tradeoffs - you will have to check the temper and read reviews. 13" is right on the border of how long you would want a blade that hard. I am wary about the price being so low for something that will require a good temper.

On the other hand, it will carry a very sharp edge that will slash very effectively. The tip though should not be used on any hard target because it will chip guaranteed with that edge shape. I don't know knives nearly as well as swords, but a serious question does apply... what do you want it for?

If it is a show or martial arts piece than it is likely a good buy. If you plan on using it, there are better tools.

Good question. I've not been active duty for a long time so no hardcore use. I prefer firearms for self/home defense. So mostly show & some MA exercise I'd like a decent longer piece but have family budget constraints. I heard of the longer one from a gentleman currently in the Airborne. Apparently they are popular in room clearing in Afganistan according to him. I then looked around there and saw the shorter one.

I'm familier with the company and carry a 3.8" folder from them but that's getting into a different range so I thought I'd bounce them off of you.

Lies and Slander of the Founders from a left-winger: William Hogeland compares "Occupy Wall Street" to the Whiskey Rebellion:

But I write about the deep, founding roots of rowdy, American populist protest and insurrection, often visionary and even utopian, yet informed and practical too, specifically over money, credit, and the purpose and nature of public and private finance. And despite my pop-narrative books on the subject, and despite my articles here, and in such place as Newdeal20.org (articles picked up by AlterNet, Huffington, Salon, Naked Capitalism and others), key indicators of my relative impact (like royalty statements!) give me a sneaking suspicion that most people still don’t connect the American founding period with a rugged drive on the part of ordinary people for equal access to the tools of economic development and against the hegemony of the high-finance, inside-government elites who signed the Declaration and framed the Constitution and made us a nation.

Sometimes people even ascribe democratic ideas to the famous upscale American Revolutionaries, who to a man actually hated democracy and popular finance. Thomas Paine, the exception, was ultimately rebuked and scorned by all of the others.

SNIP

Occupy Wall Street probably doesn’t, when you shake it down, want to secede from the union like the whiskey rebels — happily enough. But those rebels didn’t start out by wanting to secede, either; they’d fought in the awful front lines of the Revolution in hopes that those sacrifices might lead to something for them and their families; it didn’t. Occupy Wall Street does seem to want to secede, somehow, from the hopeless-feeling regurgitation, through the two political parties, of elite finance theories and policies that never seem sincerely dedicated to any fundamental improvement of opportunity for what they call, not wrongly, “the 99 percent.”

The problem for Occupy Wall Street is that their founding-period political ancestors, who were indeed good at “occupying,” almost always accompanied their efforts with, for one thing, published resolutions registering specific demands and objections (not “this situation sucks” — which of course it does — but “replace a regressive tax with a progressive one,” “give us access to the franchise,” ”issue paper money,” “take away Robert Morris’s bank charter,” etc.). On Twitter I’ve tried to collect some specific goals from Occupy people. Generally those who respond seem interested not in anarchist dismantling of government or sweeping stuff like ending capitalism but, say, real regulation. Which is cool if only because my early American democratic-finance activists called themselves “regulators”!

Scorn of the Founders and praise for government intervention in the markets: The very archetype of a Left-Liberal.

We need more. The financial sector can drive us into the ditch again, and (in the case of BoA) are giving the finger to the US.

Time to turn the Thumbscrews. In anycase, I want innovation in engineering, science, and the like, not in how to shuffle or hide money.

Under $25? For your mother?

Frankly, anything she has is mine in the end. As I am an only child. Regardless of that, I'd spend a lot more if she would wear it. But she won't.

For martial arts and home defence, this was the best purchase ever, as far as I am concerned.

I don't agree. And the the Obama administration and the Democrats in Congress should have expected Bank of America to do something like that. They're not just going to walk away from $2 billion dollars, and anyone who thought they would is a chowderhead.

re: #217 ggt

No, it's have to be one of the cursive, flowerly ones.

That would be fine. But let's do it in pink, not red. It'll seem sillier that way.

Being that I have Autism (I know some states prevent the unstable from getting guns (justly)), I would try and find a MENA style sword. Like a Kilij

Yowsa! That looks beautiful. Thank you for sharing that with me, but it will be for the hands of someone like you. At this point in my life, I would be far more likely to risk the wrath of The Boss over, say, a 1920's Parker VH grade 30" 12 gauge side by side to get pheasant or duck with.

Like I said, she won't wear it if it is too expensive. She's a depression era baby, to her EVERYTHING is too expensive.

The MOP/Marcasite earrings I got were $79 (I paid 1/2) and she thought that was way too expensive.

I don't try to understand, she is 80 and isn't going to change.

Sounds like my mother. She's 74 and still tells me about how she got through college with three $500 scholarships and living in the co-op dorms where the girls cooked their own meals and cleaned their own building.

For mom, a combo meal from McDonald's is extravagant. She insists I should buy her things from the dollar menu. Pfft. As if. But she's not going to change anytime soon. She's always been that way.

Now, I could spend $100 on a sweater and that would be fine. She'd wear it.

Sweaters are practical and have purppose.

I see them as something that will eventually wear out and end-up in trash. Jewelry can be sold later if necessary.

Hmm, interesting.

Anyway, the Radio Show I'm watching just had this. It's funny for Refuge in Audacity and Crossing the Line twice.

The Redhead in that plays a Companion of the 11th Doctor in Doctor Who, btw.

Yeah... Let's just say I got that before I got the boss...

My next purchase is in heavy negotiation...

I am terribly fond of what is known as an Oakenshott type XVIIIb and the fighting style you would find in the Zornhau.

Following is a fine example, but I have ideas as to the hilt, blade steel and an engraving. So I want to commission one.

[Link: www.albion-swords.com...]

The boss though has different ideas... Though the idea of a blade saying fear no evil in Biblical Hebrew does sound awesome to her.

Not green. Green is the color of LGF. It should only used as a font color by Charles. He could use it solely to announce site uypgrades, or perhaps new hatchlings or bannings. Call it his "official font" if you will.

239 Holidays are Family Fun Time  Mon, Oct 3, 2011 8:01:00pm

For thou art with me. Yeah, I can see that. I also dearly love the idea of hebrew engraving, though for me, old english would suffice ;)

I just need to keep practicing my chosen hand gun art, I think. In a worst case scenario that S&W 642 & five rounds of 158 grain LSWCHP +P is more likely to do me good than a blade I'm 1/4 assed with...

Might as well, since Austin is pretty much the hippie bastion of Texas compared to the rest of the state.

Well, the S&W thing... does put a massive damper on the whole sword thing.

I have a blued 6" S&W 656 .357 wheelgun for those purposes. No muss, no fuss, no jamming.

Cute! I like it.

If she's into religious themed jewelry, you can't go wrong with James Avery, IMO:

[Link: secure.jamesavery.com...]

They're pretty much a constant here in Texas. You even find men wearing their rings. They've also got a ton of silver jewelry at good prices if she doesn't want anything too showy.

She Who Must Be Obeyed went to school with the Avery kids down in Kerrville. The Tivy Fighting Antlers! (Not the Whole Stag, please note, just the disembodied antlers, striking fear into their foes...)

Lies and Slander of the Founders from a left-winger: William Hogeland compares "Occupy Wall Street" to the Whiskey Rebellion:

SNIP

Scorn of the Founders and praise for government intervention in the markets: The very archetype of a Left-Liberal.

Dark what you just said is every bit as offensive as if I had said "Slavish devotion to the names of the founding fathers and praise for all the causes they would have despised, the very archetype of a Right-Conservative"

You really don't know what Liberalism is about if you believe your post and I'd suggest you at least realize your ignorism in the subject.
