And that is the thing. IF the old Mitt Romney had held to his guns and argued for why his policies in Massachusetts (so very similar to Obama) were actually good things, stayed pro-choice and held to supporting science on issues of climate, environment and evolution (so very similar to Obama), and if he had stuck to his guns on cutting corporate tax loopholes (so very similar to Obama) he would been a palatable candidate even to me because then he would have shown a great deal of spine and moral courage.

Of course he didn't. There is nothing in the GOP other than insane fanatics, drooling ignorant incompetents, theocrats, plutocrats, racists and those who lick their sphincters for personal gain.

Romney is worse than most because he seems a bright guy who knows better.

Not really, just self awareness. When Strom Thurmond switched and became a Republican in 1964 it wasn't spine or moral courage that guided him, just awareness of what he was and where he truly belonged.

Ironically, if Romney does win the Republican nomination, and runs against Obama, the race will be between the two elected officials who actually did achieve near-universal health coverage: Romney in Massachusetts, Obama in the USA. Then, if Romney is elected, he may repeal Obama's universal health coverage! How's that for something that makes no sense?

Romney has one thing in common with Sarah Palin: if they become President, no one can possibly know what position they will take on ANY issue. Romney is like this because he's an opportunist; Palin is like this because she's not mentally well. But they both end up in the same place: like a king or queen, beholden to no one but themselves, free to do anything about any issue facing the country.

Escalating his criticism, Paul told a National Press Club luncheon that if citizens do not protest the deaths, the country will start adding reporters to its list of threats that must be taken out.

"Can you imagine being put on a list because you're a threat? What's going to happen when they come to the media? What if the media becomes a threat? ... This is the way this works. It's incrementalism," Paul said.

"It's slipping and sliding, let me tell you."

Palin Inspired Character in New Novel

Nicolle Wallace, who worked as a senior advisor on the McCain-Palin 2008 campaign, tells Time that the main character in her new novel, It's Classified was based on Sarah Palin.

Said Wallace: "The idea of a mentally ill vice president who suffers in complete isolation was obviously sparked by the behaviors I witnessed by Sarah Palin. What if somebody who was ill-equipped for the office were to ascend to the presidency or vice presidency? What would they do? How long would it take for people to figure it out? I became consumed by this question."

"Palin vacillated between extraordinary highs on the campaign stage -- she ignited more enthusiasm than our side had seen at any other point -- to debilitating lows. She was often withdrawn, uncommunicative and incapable of performing even the most basic tasks required of her job as McCain's running mate... There certainly were discussions -- not for long because of the arc the campaign took -- but certainly there were discussions about whether, if they were to win, it would be appropriate for her to be sworn in."

now wallace tells us: oh yeah, btw. palin is crazy as shit. i was just joking when I said that people that implied that were sexist.

there doesn't seem to be any hebrew word for 'apocrypha' - not that i can find on the innertubes, anyway...

It's in the Christian cannon as well and, I'll add, well respected in my branch. A better example of a good bit that is part of the Apocrypha is Tobit.

Or some of the non cannon gospels. Absolutely.

re: #69 wlewisiii

Esther was never apocryphal, but its status was wobbly. From the Jewish Encyclopedia:

In view of all the evidence the authority of the Book of Esther as a historical record must be definitely rejected. Its position in the canon among the Hagiographa or "Ketubim" is the only thing which has induced Orthodox scholars to defend its historical character at all. Even the Jews of the first and second centuries of the common era questioned its right to be included among the canonical books of the Bible (compare Meg. 7a). The author makes no mention whatever of God, to whom, in all the other books of the Old Testament, the deliverance of Israel is ascribed. The only allusion in Esther to religion is the mention of fasting (iv. 16, ix. 31). All this agrees with the theory of a late origin for the book, as it is known, for example, from Ecclesiastes, that the religious spirit had degenerated even in Judea in the Greek period, to which Esther, like Daniel, in all probability belongs.

there doesn't seem to be any hebrew word for 'apocrypha' - not that i can find on the innertubes, anyway...

it could be that by the time the concept had been formulated, the jewish community would have used the greek word - after all, the septuagint was written in greek speaking alexandria before the new testament was ever written, and the greek word 'synagogue' was already in use in the jewish community there

What happened was that the Jewish cannon was finalized centuries before the Christian one was.

That will never work. All that will achieve is make it so only billionaires and millionaires can run for office.

"No person, corporation or business entity of any type, domestic or foreign, shall be allowed to contribute money, directly or indirectly, to any candidate for Federal office or to contribute money on behalf of or opposed to any type of campaign for Federal office."

So I can't even give Elizabeth Warren $20 bucks. She'd have to pay for everything herself. The government would be run by the Romney's and Bush's and Kerry's and McCains.

re: #71 windsagio

its less harsh than saying 'race traitor' imo. And that's specifically the meaning: "black person that betrays their race in order to curry favor with the (white) establishment"

Which is arguably a good description for Cain, if an ugly one.

How is it less harsh, if that's the meaning?

And yeah, I know that's what the meaning is. And it's stupid. There's no one way a person of a race is supposed to act. Anyone using that term, or any term like it, is likely going to have very firm ideas of how people of their race are 'supposed' to act-- which makes them shitheads, to me.

There are people who are clearly self-loathing, who buy into the race concept and clearly hate the category they're in, like that Nazi apologist Jew whose name I always happily forget. But that's an entirely different kettle of fish.

I don't think worse of Cain for being a black guy and being a conservative with his views than I think of a white guy with those views. Being black doesn't give you some magic perspective. It shouldn't get you judged more harshly. I think he's wrong and his ideas deserve to be smacked down.

But calling him an 'oreo' is just buying into the same race-based bullshit that's the problem in the first place. It's saying he's really white inside-- instead of dealing with the very real fact that black people can put their own interests in front of their own peoples just like white people can.

Do we call McConnell a race traitor for putting the welfare of rich assholes ahead of millions of white people? No. Why not? He's trying to curry favor with the establishment and betraying his own people-- most of them, anyway-- to do it. So why isn't he a 'race traitor' too?

Race is incidental, and stooping to that level is always a dumb thing, and usually a sign of fanaticism or ignorance on the part of the person using the term.

Ridiculed Israeli scientist wins Nobel

When Israeli scientist Dan Shechtman claimed to have stumbled upon a new crystalline chemical structure that seemed to violate the laws of nature, colleagues mocked him, insulted him and exiled him from his research group.

After years in the scientific wilderness, though, he was proved right. And on Wednesday, he received the ultimate vindication: the Nobel Prize in chemistry.

The lesson?

"A good scientist is a humble and listening scientist and not one that is sure 100 percent in what he read in the textbooks," Shechtman said.

The shy, 70-year-old Shechtman said he never doubted his findings and considered himself merely the latest in a long line of scientists who advanced their fields by challenging the conventional wisdom and were shunned by the establishment because of it.

Phrased in such a way as to completely discount an entire cannon holiday is over the top and pretty damn stupid.

I propose the very simple observation, that had nothing happened at all, it would be very difficult to convince the Jewish people as a nation and even beyond the boundaries of Persia, to make a whole holiday out of it.

I have no problem calling him a vile traitor to his people, a liar and a bit of feces less decent than dog leavings, to be cleaned off the base of my shoes should I ever step on him.

How do you address the reality that:

And yet, self hating members of races exist. And yet, those types push themselves up by putting down their own people. And yet, those types inculcate themselves with the very enemies of their people for their own gain. And yet, it is a real phenomena.

Do you get my main point? Why is, say, Paul Ryan not the same sort of betrayer that you're saying Cain is? Ryan's tax plan would put a world of hurt on tons of white people. He's looking out for his own interests, not for theirs. So why does he escape charges of race betrayal, but Cain gets hit with them?

To me, the very existence of specialized words for minority race traitors is in itself a sign of the endemic racism, and using them is just playing into the dominant hegemony.

Oh god. Please don't do that.

Uncle Tom doesn't mean voting against your own interests, anyway. It means actually believing that you're lower status, and acting that way. A gay guy who votes for the Republicans because he doesn't give a shit about gay marriage and is very rich and puts his finances way ahead of his own rights-- I think he's an idiot, but he's not being an Uncle Tom.

That phrase-- which again, is tortuously complicated-- doesn't mean acting against your own interests to curry favor. It means really believing that you're worth less, and acting like it.

So it might describe, possibly, some gay people voting against their own interests, if they were doing so out of a firm conviction that they didn't deserve marriage, that straight people were better, but otherwise, no, it wouldn't fit.

Comments like #126, regardless of truth or lack thereof, seem to me to facilitate an outside viewer who is sympathetic to the idea that both sides are of the same coin. Phrasing is important.

I don't really see you as having actually given anything back, though. I mean, your last example about calling gay people who vote against gay rights "Uncle Tom", do you get that-- even if you want, for some reason, to use that racially-laden phrase in a different context-- it'd be important why they voted against gay rights, whether it was from actually selfish motives or due to actual belief that gay people were worth less?

That is the real bigotry.

Do you really not understand that

The Arabs treat us like animals every chance they get

is not in any way semantically equivalent to

[The] majority of [Arabs] in the middle East [have been treating Jews like animals]

? Or do you understand, but you will use the former statement instead of the latter because even though the latter would be more precise (set aside the fact whether it is true or not) you don't care because "it applies to the majority", so any cases in which it does not apply does not matter?

Would this be a good time to jump in and say I do not understand how the term "Uncle Tom" came to mean what it does? Having read the book, it seems to me that he was a pattern-card of Christian goodness in the way only the Victorians could create them. He ultimately sacrificed himself to allow a group of slaves to escape. How is this being a race traitor, or sucking up to whites? As I recall, he was accepting of his life, but that seems more a Victorian meme than racist one to me.

This is what i meant about the term "Oreo" and "Uncle Tom" not being strongly related. There's a lot of good writing on the subject, but basically the self-abnegation and the passiveness of Uncle Tom's character, over time, was seen not as a heroic example but a servile one. James Baldwin wrote on it, but I can't find what he wrote easily.

The Wiki article gives a moderately good rundown of how the term changed.

I actually know one guy-- total asshole-- who votes for the GOP, in California, even voted against Prop 8, because, although gay, he's got like a minuscule sex drive and his main pleasure is buying fancy toys and jet-ski-ing and the like.

I think he's a materialist jerk, but since he doesn't want to marry, adopt children, etc. he sees no reason to vote for gay rights. He's happy to take the societal acceptance that gays won hard-fought over generations and just sit on them.

The conference planners have obliged Mr. Romney, scheduling him to speak right before Bryan Fischer, who is chief spokesman for the family association and is known for his strident remarks on homosexuality, gay rights, Muslims and Mormons. Their talks will be followed by a panel of same-sex marriage opponents.

The liberal advocacy group People for the American Way has called on the presidential candidates, and especially Mr. Romney because he will share a stage, to publicly disassociate themselves from Mr. Fischer and what it called, in a statement on Wednesday, his “unmitigated bigotry.” The Southern Poverty Law Center has made similar appeals to the candidates.

Yes, I think it has a lot more to do with rejecting the Victorian aesthetic than any actual aspects of the character. I could certainly criticize the portrayal of Little Eva and her dying vision of heaven as a model for modern life. The problem is lifting a character out of a very, very different time and place.

And I agree with you about the "oreo" idea being sort of odd. A lot of people have commented on the concept that being educated and successful is a "white value" that should be rejected by others.

Well I do have to credit you for consistency. I don't however enjoy your digs.

You are playing semantic games.

So once again, in the interests of accuracy, please make a count of how many times I have written something like the following for all the so easily offended:

I am well aware that not every (Republican, Arab, Wingnut, Moonbat etc...) believes or acts like x. However those who do not are not in the majority, do not control events and are not the ones obviously being discussed. In all cases of talking about people, the overwhelming majority that represents a group is what is meant by discussing that group.

How many times have I written something like this when people like windi or wrench start bleating on moronically about broad brushes?

Is it dozens by now?

Despite individual exceptions, it is not wrong to say that Republicans have a pronounced problem with racism or that the South has a particularly nasty history of it. It is not wrong to say that Republicans are callous to the poor, or homophobic or anti-science or anti- women's rights. Nor is it wrong to point out that the majority of the Arab world hates Jews and does not believe that they should be granted any rights to their own native land or thinks that murdering Jews in terror attacks is a particularly bad thing.

Sorry folks, the real world is knocking.

It's so sad. It's like the bankers who took champagne out to look down at the protesters, like they were having a show put on for them.

What can you do with selfish sociopaths? You can't really hurt them by pointing out they're terrible people; they honestly believe they're better than other people. Or they're actually just big black holes of despair and nihilism.

I feel bad for them, in a way, because I think they think they're cool.

The one absolute, throughout time, has been that the people on the bottom are the ones who define cool. Nobody gives a shit what Paris Hilton is wearing. Fashion trends get started by random punk kids in New York. New music bubbles up from inside the walls of the ghetto.

Are they the 1%? Sure. They're at the top of the economic pile.

But they'll never make anyone go wow like these broke-ass kids from the hood will:

I am well aware that not every (Republican, Arab, Wingnut, Moonbat etc...) believes or acts like x. However those who do not are not in the majority, do not control events and are not the ones obviously being discussed. In all cases of talking about people, the overwhelming majority that represents a group is what is meant by discussing that group.

So basically you are okay with the minority of a group always taking the hits for what the majority stands out for?

Do you understand the difference in meaning between the following statements?:

Arabs like falafel.
The Arabs like falafel.
Some Arabs like falafel.
A majority of Arabs like falafel.

Despite individual exceptions,

Which you chose to ignore and subsequently imply as being insignificant.

You want to deal with the real world? You should learn to describe it more accurately.

You know, I don't hate you. I hate elitism, and when you exhibit it, I start bitching at you. Last time I did it, so many other people joined in that you backed down and apologized (re: "trailer trash".)

And I hate ignorant people like you, derailing perfectly clear points just to feel intellectually equal to those they are not. And no, I backed down because I was wrong in that context to use the phrase. If you honestly think that you changed my mind on the basis of popularity with you or those like you, you are fooling yourself. Your opinions really don't mean anything to me. When you post facts or make meaningful contributions, I care about them on a case by case basis.

I disagreed with a few of your other posts, but nothing that sticks in my mind right now.

I'm sure you will think of something. I mean you just did up above.

I do care for the truth. I also believe in careful use of language to avoid miscommunication. You seem to think that saying, means you no longer need to take care how you use the language, because everyone should understand what you mean because they should have read your disclaimer at some point.

I seem to think that you should learn to speak the same English that every other American does with the same social queues and understandings involved.

I think you should be careful all the time.

And I think you are revelling in discord that you did not need to become involved in out of vainglorious personal spite.

A couple people already cleared out their tents. A human chain formed around one of them and if I recall there was a girl that actually decided to stay in her tent. There was a cop going in to negotiate her to come out, in the meantime a bunch of others formed a human chain around it.

Couldn't get good photos of that though, the only thing tighter than that was the circle of other folks trying to get photos. XD

I thought I wrote that in clear English.

You are the sort of person who conveniently ignores deaths of people I know and love to make a silly dig at a true statement in context.

You are the sort to deny the horrible history of Southern racism for the same reasons.

This makes you despicable and dishonest. It shows a lack of honor and intellectual integrity as well as a smug sense of unfounded superiority on your part.

I'm not sure she'll succeed, just that's she's trying. I suspect she's going to try and build a market around the "Esther" and socon image.

Then again, Consider that Newt's setup isn't exactly high profile--it's old school direct mail soliciting plus some web and keeping up just a bit of public profile--so she may sink below the attention of the media and still repeat a profit.

And you lecture me about learning, when you know full well that this is the reality that obtains in the Middle East and that the majority of Arabs there cheer for those deaths and dance in the streets when it happens.

How dare you?

Is the unearned feeling of intellectual superiority that important to you? It isn't that you discount the deaths or the cries of parents who lost their children because you hate Jewish people or because you are ignorant of the facts.

It's just that you are being a smug prig.

That really sucks. And to what end? To feel ohh so smart on the web?

In the real world, the day you have a damn thing to teach me is the day I took a serious head injury. But so what? This is the web. The only thing that matters is the truth of the information given. All you are doing is parsing and playing word games for you own enjoyment and at the expense of people who are dying. Of course you don't feel a hint of shame at that.

This is true. Uncle Tom is a heroic man who had the great misfortune of being written by, well, Harriet Beecher Stowe.

God bless the woman, her intentions were good, but Victorian melodrama has not aged particularly well.

BUT...that book had the effect that she desired, namely, to make lots and lots of Americans aware of the pains and sufferings of enslaved Americans. This was important.

that was another story...same result tho
from wiki
The word gained prominence[citation needed] through the children's book Little Black Sambo by Helen Bannerman, in 1899. It was the story of a boy named Sambo who outwitted a group of hungry tigers. Bannerman also wrote Little Black Mingo, Little Black Quasha, and Little Black Quibba. One recent edition has renamed the book The Story of Little Babaji.[citation needed] In this book, Sambo is the name of a South Indian boy, and the author was not aware of the racial African meaning at the time the book was written.

re: #334 darthstar

I like you, Lude...but you're starting to get a bit obsessive here.

No I'm done with it for now. I made the point - or better put the "ohh so easily offended" made the point for me more eloquently than I could.

Contrary to the narratives that some have, I am not even particularly angry. And of course I am not melting down or losing it. I used to be angry at the hypocrisy of certain others here, so blatantly on display in this thread. But there is no point in anger. They have their petty axes to grind and petty egos to inflate. At one point, I felt surprise and even betrayal at the human weakness on display.

So why bother? It goes case by case.

I'm not a bigot even though that is an easy narrative for someone like Windi to take while he hides his own naked and open hatred of Israel. By attacking me and derailing what I say he can remove the points that I made in defence of Israel. I can't let that stand.

I'm not a furious at someone like wrench who wrote as clearly as anyone could, that she feels an inferiority complex. And yes, that will give compulsive downdings, but before you do hit that, ask yourself why it is she is so out to get "elitists" as she puts it, even when what they are saying is indisputably true? Again, it isn't about that. Who cares. I care simply to not let the racial history of the south or the nature of Arab violence be whitewashed under a falsely motivated air of PC.

And again, as to 00G... I actually like that poster. Smart but arrogant. Then again so am I. However, I can't let him or her belittle real world deaths on a very selective English language hunt.

The unifying theme is the same.

Truth first. Petty web politics not even on the radar.

I'll agree with that - she always seems to be trying too hard.

But she seems so relaxed singing Rodgers & Hart. Totally the opposite of what I've come to expect from her.

Bennett's duet with Amy Winehouse was excellent as well. She looked so thrilled to share a song with him, and she knocked it out of the park as well.

re: #387 ProLifeLiberal

Okay, I found out what happened:

On October 4, 2011, following a decision adopted by the community, all of the site's articles were hidden and the website blocked by its administrators, as a protest against paragraph 29 of the DDL intercettazioni (Wiretapping Bill) which was being debated at the time in the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian parliament. The proposed bill would empower anyone who believes themselves to have been offended by the content of a web site to enforce publication of a reply, uneditable and uncommented, on the same web site, within 48 hours and without any prior evaluation of the claim by a judge. Should the bill pass, it is thought likely to inflict severe limitations on the "horizontal" freedom of access and editing that is common to Wikimedia projects. This was the first time a Wikipedia blanked all its content to protest. The Wikimedia Foundation officially supported the decision of the Italian Wikipedia by a statement released the same day. The manifesto which replaced the Italian Wikipedia has been viewed approximately 8 million times.

Italy continues to slide towards dictatorship.

The GOP soul under siege from Obama (or Romney if you want to go deeper into the GOP soul being conservative and Romney being not one) and God calling upon her to ride to the rescue, rally the cause, and then defeat the enemy for great glory.

I call her Joan of Arc, 2.0

Tony Bennett seems to bring out the very best in his female duet partners.

[Video]Gaga sounds great in that video. She handles the song effortlessly and gets a couple of laughs out of the old pro.

That's because, even at eighty-five, all the girls want Tony.

That's what they told my Mom when she was 84 and had the major Whipple surgery for her very advanced pancreatic cancer. She lived to be 90. Pancreatic cancer is a bitch, but it's not an immediate death sentence. Jobs lived another 7 years after his initial diagnosis.

good point...yes pancreatic cancer moves slowly and for that reason alone there may be hope in the future...quality of life is so important, that the first thing I do in the morning is count my blessings...another day, another gift....cancer freaks me out, I admit

It kills most people who contract it in two years and is one of the most clear death sentence cancers.

Gingrich: GOP isn't racist

Don’t say the Republican Party doesn’t appeal to minorities, Newt Gingrich says.

“How do you have a press conference with Michael Steele and say, ‘Why are you a racist?’” Gingrich said here, citing the former RNC chairman. “You can't attack our team as being racist with Herman Cain running a campaign.”

Winehouse was raised by a musician, so I expect she realized how special Bennett really is.

it does...when they say cancer with regard to the pancreas, you're dead

Pancreas and the liver...catch it soon enough and you can buy some time, but for most, it usually turns out to be a death sentence.

Found that out the hard way with my father (breast cancer that had metastasized to the liver, even after a mastectomy and a couple of rounds of chemo). He bought about five years, died last April.

I saw an interview with Tony where he talked about Winehouse, and he said he told her that she reminded him of Dinah Washington.

He said her face lit up and she could barely believe he would compare her to the woman who was perhaps her biggest idol.

And he seemed like he was really touched by her humility. So sad.

They'd make a killing in South Dakota. My wife was talking to a friend back home earlier. Her friend had taken the family to Florida for vacation this summer. While on the beach her 4 year old son blurted out "That man is tan!". The first black person the kid had ever seen.
