RIP: Civil Rights Hero Fred Shuttlesworth

“The Lord knew I lived in a hard town, so he gave me a hard head”

Another American visionary died today, a man whose influence on the social landscape of the United States cannot be measured: Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, Civil Rights Pioneer, Dies at 89.

MP3 Audio

The Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, a pioneer of the civil rights movement, died Wednesday in Birmingham, Ala. Shuttlesworth led Birmingham’s battle against segregation — a battle that focused the national spotlight on the violent resistance to equal rights in the South and forced change. He was 89.

As Birmingham goes, so goes the nation. That belief was the driving force behind Shuttlesworth’s crusade for equality.

“He was the soul and heart of the Birmingham movement,” Georgia Rep. John Lewis said. It was Birmingham, he said, that brought the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

“Fred Shuttlesworth had the vision, the determination never to give up, never to give in,” Lewis said. “He led an unbelievable children’s crusade. It was the children who faced dogs, fire hoses, police billy clubs that moved and shook the nation.”

A decade before that infamous standoff between authorities and young protesters in Kelly Ingram Park, Shuttlesworth was already pushing for change in what had come to be called “Bombingham.” Dozens of black homes and churches were bombed, the cases rarely investigated by the city’s all-white police force. In 1955, the charismatic young pastor of Bethel Baptist Church led a delegation of ministers who petitioned for black police officers.

Historian Horace Huntley of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute said Shuttlesworth personally challenged just about every segregated institution in the city — from schools and parks to buses, even the waiting room at the train station.

“They had a white section and a colored section. Fred and his wife bought tickets, and they sat in the white section,” Huntley said. “That was revolutionary for Birmingham of the 1950s.”

"All we've got to do is to keep marching. Do tomorrow what we did today, and do it the next day, and then the next day we won't have to do it at all. Because ... day before yesterday we filled up the jails, and then today we filled up the jail yard. And on tomorrow, when they look up and see that number coming, I don't know what they're going to do."

Too many learn of the big names, only in death.

Obama with Shuttlesworth in Birmingham - 2007, pushing him across the Edmund Pettus Bridge to view the scene of the attack. Yes, this is from the same event that Breitbart recently used to show how the New Black Panthers tainted everyone in attendance with their scary militant blackness.

It's odd. They love the idea--'if I leave and take my ball, you'll be sorry'--but they never leave.

For two reasons: 1. They can't do without the rest of us and 2. They know they can be replaced LIKE THAT.

I have been a volunteer at the VA hospital here for a number of years and one thing I've noticed about African American men of his generation is their elegance. They are the only men I ever see wearing hats that aren't baseball caps. Totally snappy dressers, even to come to the VA for their appointments, dressed like Sunday. Their demeanor is likewise elegant and gentlemanly in its finest sense.

That's what I see in his picture.

What’s driving Occupy Wall Street, in one chart

Take a look at a new poll from the Pew Center on People and Press, showing that the number of Americans who think we’re a country divided into the “haves” and “have nots” shot up by 10 percent over the past three years, after a bit of a decline the year prior:

I know what they stand for, as do you. Just because they don't have the skills to express that in traditional political form makes it no less relevant.

It's not about "traditional political form," it's about knowing what the actual goals are

I heard an interview with a guy earlier who said "We're part of the 99% so we're against everything the other 1% is for." If that's the case then count me out......

Now, if they're able to focus their energy on working within this great, yet flawed, system we have then I'm behind them 100%. If they want to get the money out of politics (step one) then I'd like to see them put some representatives up for election in contests where they're unhappy with the incumbent....I'd like to see them out knocking on doors and working against the money by putting leather to asphalt, making phone calls, answering phones.

I had a friend of mine earlier try to compare this Occupy Wall Street protest with the Arab Spring.....they're getting together tomorrow in my town and he was debating whether or not to go because he didn't want to be too tired when he went to work. "Brosef" I said, "If this was the Arab Spring you'd be debating whether or not you would be going because you wouldn't be sure if you'd be getting a bullet in the head or thrown in prison....not whether or not you were going to be tired at work later on." Same thing with comparing OWS with the Civil Rights movement.....those comparisons need to stop.

Of course I hate the income disparity we're seeing now.....but I'm not throwing my hat into a ring with a group of people until I know exactly where they stand and what the means are that they are prepared to use in order to reach those ends.

Can you say exactly what the goals of the TP are? They've been around for years now, are treated as legit by the MSM, have been embraced by the GOP...and yet they have no clear goals other than opposing Obama. Besides that, they've got nothing but slogans about how things were so much better before electricity and running water. Just inarticulate right wing populism.

The OWS can be seen as an analog on the left (though it may morph into something else, something better). At this point, the movement appears to be dominated by inarticulate left wing populism. The economy sucks and they're pissed off because they sense that Wall St. played a part in making it suck. Beyond that, no clear goals or philosophy...not yet anyway.

As I understand it, Civil Rights leaders worked to change the system by using the system, but failed consistently FOR DECADES AND DECADES. Because the laws were flat wrong. It took non-violent protests to make people aware they were not going to go away. It brought attention to the issue and things changed - laws changed.

The "system" now is social media as a tool for organizing and fundraising. The TP has used it very effectively. Clearly the OWS has used it to some effect thus far, or else they would have disappeared as quickly as the Coffee Party.

Whether they'll eventually have anywhere near the success of the TP remains to be seen.

There is certainly something to that. I learned way back when that when I was making the final pleas for grant requests that when I wore an actual "put together" suit with proper accessories, I was much more convincing and professional - not just in appearance but in articulating my case in a more eloquent way. Senator Bernie Sanders:

"I think they're really touching a nerve," Sen. Bernie Sanders said Tuesday of protests on Wall Street that have inspired demonstrations from Burlington, Vt., to Los Angeles. "The nerve is that the average American understands that as a result of the greed and the recklessness and the illegal behavior on Wall Street, these guys plunged us into the horrendous recession that we're in right now." Even Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke allowed that there was "excessive risk taking" by Wall Street when Sanders questioned him on Tuesday about the root causes of the recession and the concerns voiced by protesters. "They blame, with some justification, the financial sector with getting us into this mess," Bernanke told another member of the Joint Economic Committee. "I can't blame them," he added.

One system is the courts. As I pointed out, the TP has had a huge effect on our political landscape, and it's not because of court cases.

As for laws, the Dems tried to pass Wall St. reform, but it's so watered down it may be useless in preventing the kind of malfeasance we've seen.

As for the regular guy on the street, protesting (as opposed to filing a lawsuit) is his way of trying to change things (as it was for many involved in other movements, including the civil rights marches). The average man on the street doesn't have the resources to take this to court, whatever this is. Hence the fundraising and organizing necessary to get experts and pols involved.

As a wildlife biologist with a specialty in predators, ranchers et al aren't about to listen to a woman unless she sneaks up on them. They would get my name and assume I was male. Charles Pierce is really growing on me.

The Tea Party, for all the protestations of how organic and spontaneous it all was, still grew out of the deep and tangled root-ball of politics and corporate money and from which all of modern conservative politics springs. Somebody had to pay to rent the buses. Somebody had to coordinate all those signs with pictures of President Obama as a witch doctor, or Hitler, or the Joker. Somebody had to pay to convert all that anger and paranoia into field organizations that put kooks like Allen West into Congress and actual thieves like Rick Scott into the governor's mansions. What's going on in the park these days is something that defines its target not so much as a who, but as a what. There's no sign at all that many national Democrats — with the possible exception of Elizabeth Warren up in Massachusetts, who's built a career on many of the same issues that have brought people to the park — are willing even to co-opt the message here. The national media largely have blown off the protests because none of the people on their speed-dials have had anything to do with it. Surely, in a presidential campaign year in which the effects of a savage economic downturn are the primary issue, an ongoing protest against the people largely responsible for that downturn is as worthy of inclusion in the national debate as something as useless as the Iowa Straw Poll.

Instead, we get snotty New Republic reporters on play dates among the hippies, and insufferable Chaunceys from the conservative press exercising the half of the wit they have, and Erin Burnett, who's never met a hedge fund she didn't adore, launching her new CNN show with video of a longhaired guy with funny glasses. And everybody else gets on the bus to drive around New Hampshire, mourning the loss of the transformational figure that is Chris Christie. Unlike the Tea Party, which ultimately became a vehicle for electing fringe Republicans, and, thereupon, a vehicle for instituting policies that the corporate class has been swooning over for decades, the people in the park are praying far outside the camp.

Sorry about that...

The importance of the new radio telescope is that, like it's predecessor the VLA in New Mexico, it increases the spatial resolution by putting many antennae on long baselines (tracks), and it also is very sensitive. It's the next step in radio telescopy.

It's amazing to me what you DON'T HAVE TO PAY FOR.

Do not ever, ever, ever, ever pay for Printer Paper. Well, you have to pay a little.

Seriously. The office supply stores offer it on a pretty regular basis for rebate/rewards.

You have to sign-up for their rewards plan and watch the ad paper. I have about 10 reams of HP Printer Paper. I paid the sales tax only. Sometimes you have to pay $1 or $2. But there are COUPONS. Yes, Office Depot et al. take coupons. Use the Rewards money (which usually is in the form of store credit) for printer cartridges. Or more free paper or whatever else they are offering, every store offers something free or almost free each week. Watch the ads.

Now, I go and get the limit and give it to the Church or whatever charity someone is collecting for.

Bring your old printer cartridges to the store for credit (usually $2 or $3 dollars). Watch the ads, sometimes they'll offer a higher $ amount for them for a limited time. Again, use the reward money for Printer Cartridges. I haven't had luck refilling my cartridges, so I recycle them for $. It adds up.

Hi, new person!

I had no fucking idea what you're talking about! I went and Googled it!

That is quite awful, and I'm sorry you've had to learn in such a shocking way that Mike Tyson is an asshole. (Also a convicted rapist, and an ear-biter.)

Can you explain why you dropped in to the end of a nice thread about Fred Shuttlesworth of blessed memory to bring this up? I mean, I appreciate the information, no doubt, but your aggression seems a little out of place.

He likely dropped in because he read a Dana Loesch piece in AB's sleazy blog where she defends Hank Williams' comments comparing Hitler to Obama. (In her world, calling someone Hitler isn't really calling them Hitler.) And she, like our dear departed friend, sees a double standard with respect to Mike Tyson's lewd comments about Palin.

Williams got punished by ESPN, but Tyson wasn't punished by ______? Does Tyson even have a TV show anymore that could be taken away from him? With that voice of his, I'm pretty sure he doesn't sing the intro to any TV shows, so that can't be taken away from him. What do Loesch and others want, other than to play the victim of the evil librul MSM?

She's a bit off-kilter, even just going by public statements on Twitter and other social media. She regularly gets mocked by Gawker for her nutty proclamations. But she has a new book that's apparently mostly mocking politics and humorously polemical (in intent, at least--she's not quite my bag. I like hyperbole and don't mind crudeness, but she never seems to quite arrange them in an agreeable manner), so she may also be doing promotion.

Not sure. The extent of my knowledge of either woman is limited, though I've seen some of Barr standup work. I just recall Barr turning up on Gawker because of her online statements. Apparently she's nutty, not just politically.

Back when she was up and coming I tried some of her standup work...not to my taste. She definitely has a style that favors the grotesque--that line where the acerbic or satirical teeters towards discomfort--which makes it hard to tell in her recent stuff where the intent to create humor ends and serious declaration ends.

Edited to say: Hitler pose demonstrating my point about humor style.

Sometimes I think celebrities should have to pass some kind of standardized test before they're allowed to express political opinions. There is nothing more obnoxious than that fallacy of "I have an audience, therefore my opinion has weight equivalent to people who actively research or study."

I actually dread famous people who are on the same side of an issue as I...it often turns out they're making their case via the dumbest, most-privilege-having, condescending way possible.

re: #382 SanFernandoIndy

/shrug

I think the photoshoot is massively more offensive.

That was dumb. And offensive. However, here's the explanation of intent:

Hitler thought he was being really manly "cleaning Germany up" by burning people in ovens. I was making fun of him, not his victims. My caricature of him very aptly imitates the "man with a godly mission" pose that he struck in all the early photographs taken of him. I portray him being very proud of his burnt cookies, because in his last words, he was proudly congratulating himself for killing so many Jews, and encouraged the German people to carry on his mission against the "International Jew." The guy actually thought that killing jews was a good thing! The language that he used is still being used by many world leaders to this day. He killed my whole family, it is true, but he is also dead, and I ,a Jewish woman am still alive to make fun of him, and I will continue to make fun of the little runt for the rest of my life! He, and his ideas need to be laughed at even more these days, picked apart and analyzed up and down, as there are more and more people denying his crimes, and more and more despots trying to copy them.

Dumb because yeah, she turned what she imagined would be making fun of Hitler into offensive satire involving his victims.

However, given the intent, Jackson is at least as bad, if not worse.

Everyone should be able to express their opinion. It is up to the listener to decide if it is worth anything. Of course name recognition means ratings.... that is what this game is about.

Jackson is using way overblown and vacuous, but fairly standard, rhetoric (on both sides) in today's political discourse.

Barr is all "Burnt Jews is funny, hardy derpy har!".

But Jackson is worse, because Barr was supposedly making fun of Hitler too.

424 Lord Baron Viscount Duke Earl Count Planckton  Thu, Oct 6, 2011 1:43:15am

SanFernandoIndy thinks the below is a standard political rhetoric - on both sides, no less.

Hitler did this.

Hitler, like Obama, was a "socialist" who came from a dysfunctional family, had a communist father who abused alcohol, womanized and sired several children from different mothers, had a white mother, suffered child abuse and neglect, moved often, lied about his birth and heritage, changed his name, was a narcissist, rose to power with the help of disreputable men, had the Rothschilds as financial backers, stirred up racial conflict and class warfare, wrote a biography about race at age 35, followed up with another book used to launch a political career, supported infanticide (partial-birth abortion), gave big speeches in stadiums, promised change and a new social order, had youth groups singing his praises, used propaganda, used voter fraud and intimidation, controlled the media, created "crises," used a poor economy, hated Jews (Israel), pretended to be "Christian," advocated population control and euthanasia, socialized medicine, formed a private army and then … killed his political opposition with his private army.

Well, I am Obama's political opposition. That's why I am concerned.

re: #498 SanFernandoIndy

Race identity and racial politics is a tricky topic. It helps not to through deliberately throw matches.

It's a fair to ask why he chooses to identify as black. Obama is 50% white and 50% black. He could go either way. To say that he's automatically black, would be embracing the racist one drop rule.

We've already had that disgusting thread downstairs attacking Cain for not being authentically black.

In Australia, and Aborigine politician resigned in disgust because she was racially attacked by the left (she was called an coconut, their version of oreo, among other things) because she was trying to bring jobs to her community.

Inflammatory side note: I heard Van Jones described as a watermelon (green/environmentalist on the outside, red/commiesocialist on the inside i.e. advocating communistic/socialistic policies under the guise of environmentalism NB: Jones is a self proclaimed communist) Is that racist because he's black?

I've got a gut feeling that, as a child, someone told the future Prez he was black at least once. Sort of thing sticks.

Um. You know I was the main person talking about how stupid the word 'oreo' is, right? I mean, you did bother to actually read the thread?

One person said that they understood what their black friends meant by calling him an oreo. Another person said that he was an Uncle Tom.

Then I argued with them about it about how appropriate those terms are.

So, your characterization is false. You painted the entire thread as though it was attacking Cain for not being authentically black. Somehow, you forget to mention that it was, in fact, an argument.

Moron, I'm the one who was arguing that those terms aren't appropriate.

You're stretching dude. I take it for granted that all here are familiar with the thread in question and if not, can look it up it with great ease. Filling up posts with extraneous disclaimers and exposition just makes for poor writing and tldr.

What I'm saying is that you might as well categorize the thread as being a polemic against those terms, since that happened in the thread, too.

But for whatever reason, you decided to categorize it as a thread-- entirely-- attacking Cain for not being sufficiently black.

Why is that?

From what I understand, these fees are to make up for some new regs regarding what banks could charge to merchants when they passed a bunch of new stuff last year.

Five bucks a month ain't going to nearly make up for the loss of revenue that banks got when the amounts there were allowed to charge merchants were reduced.

This is a gi-fucking-gantic PR miscalculation on the bank's part.

Citibanks's charge on checking accounts unless you maintain a $15,000 minimum balance? Who maintains a $15,000 minimum balance?

Fire wins one for Firefly:

Victory at UW-Stout: Chancellor Folds after Censorship of 'Firefly' and Anti-Fascism Posters
[Link: thefire.org...]

On September 12, 2011, Professor Miller posted outside his office door an image of Fillion in Joss Whedon's sci-fi series Firefly and a line from an episode: "You don't know me, son, so let me explain this to you once: If I ever kill you, you'll be awake. You'll be facing me. And you'll be armed." On September 16, Stout Chief of Police Lisa A. Walter notified Miller that she had removed the poster because it "refer[s] to killing." After Miller replied, "respect my first amendment rights," Walter wrote that "the poster can be interpreted as a threat." Walter also threatened Miller with criminal charges of "disorderly conduct" if he posted any similar poster.

In response to Walter's censorship, Miller placed a new poster on his office door on the 16th. The poster read, "Warning: Fascism" and mocked, "Fascism can cause blunt head trauma and/or violent death. Keep fascism away from children and pets."

Astoundingly, Walter escalated the absurdity. On September 20, she wrote that this poster, too, had been censored as a "threat" because it "depicts violence and mentions violence and death." She added that Stout's "threat assessment team" had made the decision. College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Interim Dean Raymond Hayes then scheduled a meeting with Miller about "the concerns raised by the campus threat assessment team."

Wells Fargo upped by account fees some time ago (they used to be free, then up, then up.)

The problem these big banks are facing - and BofA is among the most troubled - is that their failure of due diligence in real estate has put them into a real crisis, one that doesn't manifest itself as worse as it could since they are holding on to non-performing real estate by the billions of dollars (assigned value) rather than trying to sell them, and accept a loss.

Well, the general shareholders may think that way, but the board members have to know what a pickle banking is in, and that board ought to know too that their CEO is not winning over the public via his charm.

At least Bernanke is smart enough politically to know how to speak in public, and so do many of the other Fed senior bankers (you almost never find them sticking their feet in their mouths.) However, the banks themselves can be run by the most tone-deaf, it appears.

Cambodia and Vietnam Next On CRO Expansion Map

Intense competition for patients and clinical trial sites is making it harder to enrol studies in Asia-Pacific on time. In response, contract research organisations (CRO) are looking beyond traditional markets.

I expect Vietnam and Cambodia to emerge as clinical trial regions. Large CROs are exploring these countries due to competition for patients in other areas of Asia-Pacific”, James Tsui, contracts and outsourcing manager for Roche in Asia-Pacific, said at Patient Recruitment Outsourcing (PRO) 2011.

Competition in oncology, cardiovascular disease, central nervous system, and diabetes is intense. The number of qualified trial sites is a limiting factor. Options are cut further, Tsui said, as some study centres prioritise recruitment of trials sponsored by CROs and biopharm to which they are affiliated.

Instead of focusing resources on out-competing rival trials some CROs are looking to less crowded countries such as Cambodia and Vietnam, Tsui said. [...]

Outsourcing in the human guinea-pig business... to countries where one doesn't have to worry about the FDA continually looking over your shoulder.

re: #645 freetoken

re: #646 Alouette

The people who actually could affect change are not motivated (enough) to do anything about the wage labor question because the odds are still decked tremendously in their favor. To a big extent, the nation states (either solitary, like the U.S., or in multiples, like the EU) still act as safe havens for capital that's been trickling down enough to keep the peace where it matters for now. Keeping prices low, etc.

But the other important factor is the labor force participation rate sliding, especially in the industrialized states. This means fewer and fewer people who can spend some of their wage money to pay union membership fees or make donations to political parties supporting their cause. Thus, the odds are also decked against labor. "Occupy Wall Street" is just the latest symptom of this.

Idle speculation: I don't think that there is going to be a solution without the liberation of China. Free unions and free political parties in China. Eventually, it will come. You can't grown an economy without also building up the support lifeline of the next generation effectively asking for freedom. After that, Africa.

Good morning scaly ones!

Jimmah has a good page on the OWS protests. The article it links to quotes William Gross, managing director of PIMCO:

Long-term profits cannot ultimately grow unless they are partnered with near equal benefits for labor. Washington, London, Berlin and yes, even Beijing must accept this commonsensical reality alongside several other structural initiatives that seek to rebalance the global economy. The United States in particular requires an enhanced safety net of benefits for the unemployed unless and until it can produce enough jobs to return to our prior economic model which suggested opportunity for all who were willing to grab for the brass ring – a ring that is now tarnished if not unavailable for the grasping."

Gross concludes:

"There are no double-digit investment returns anywhere in sight for owners of financial assets. A modern day, Budweiser-drinking Karl Marx might have put it this way: ‘Laborers of the world, unite – you have only your six-packs to lose.’ He might also have added, ‘Investors/policymakers of the world wake up – you’re killing the proletariat goose that lays your golden eggs.’"

Without meaning to bash her, the most disconcerting thing about this announcement, which surely could have come months ago (family concerns existed at the time she took the VP nomination, let alone at the beginning of this year), is the fact that it comes so soon after a money grab by her PAC. re: #662 000G

I think that particular officer was wrong to engage the crowd like that. Yes, there were some protesters pushing forward, but what was gained by thrashing around with the baton? Nothing. There was a barrier already in place, and cops were manning that line. It was a contained situation, even with the crowds pushing ahead.

I think those who ended up being assaulted by that officer may have a good case for assault and criminal charges against that particular officer.

For the most part, yesterday's march was peaceful and raised the profile of OWS quite a bit. However, the unions are late to the party and OWS wont let themselves be pushed out of the way by the unions.

Another thing about the protests. This is all happening within view of the Canyon of Heroes on Broadway and there was nothing "mega" about the protests. 10-20,000 people for a protest is a trifle in protests for New York City. Heck, it's a fraction of the throngs that can show up for a parade (like for the Yankees or Mets when they win a WS). It's far better than a few hundred or couple of thousand people from OWS to date, but we need to have some perspective here about just how motivated people are. There have been union sponsored marches in DC that have garnered 100,000 people or more, but have had a fraction of the media coverage even though the focus of the protests were generally against anti-worker business practices. So, does higher media profile outweigh lack of numbers on the ground? It would seem that way.

Move the Zuccotti Park protesters to Union Square or Washington Square Park and they fade into the fabric of the parks' historic place of protests against government, business, or anything else that strikes their fancy. They've gotten coverage as much for where they've set up shop; and that's to their credit.

re: #694 Killgore Trout

The protesters were correctly arrested for blocking the Brooklyn bridge despite their claims that they were "lured" on to the bridge and were only following the cops. This particular incident with the cop swinging away with the baton doesn't appear to be a situation where the officer was following procedure. I'm sure the NYPD and internal affairs will look real closely at the situation and that the NYCLU or other civil rights groups will take up action.

The fact is that NYPD and protesters have largely followed a peaceful script even if there are large numbers of disorderly conduct arrests. There hasn't been the kind of rioting associated with these protests - like in Greece or elsewhere. We're not talking about thugs hurling bricks through windows or defacing property.

It's why the video showing the officer swinging away is so troubling as an image for the NYPD and can galvanize the protesters even further.

Leaving aside the Brooklyn Bridge incident for now. No, anytime protests who are not actively rioting are getting maced and beaten by police officers there is a problem. If the police officers involved are following procedures there is a big problem. The same goes for beating reporters.

With regards to the brooklyn bridge incident, I think that was mostly poor planning on both sides of the issue. The protesters didn't have enough organizers along the body of the march to keep directing traffic correctly. The Police do a good enough job informing the protesters that they were doing something illegal until it was too late.

Indeed - had these protesters taken up in Union Square or Washington Square Parks, they would have blended into the background noise and no one would even notice. Heck, the protests who have taken over the park are largely unnoticed more than a block away - with little other going on in the news, they've got a whole lot more attention than they would have otherwise had. Because the protests are in NYC, they're getting outsized attention b/c of the proximity to media services and Wall Street.

It's when they went to the Brooklyn Bridge or had the unions join them that they got even more media coverage.

Herman Cain Skips Out on Early States to Push His New Book

Instead of capitalizing on his newfound momentum by hitting the campaign trail hard, Cain this week opted to spend most of his time promoting his book, This is Herman Cain! My Journey to the White House, which just arrived in retail stores this week. Rather than visit diners in early voting states like Iowa and New Hampshire, he's signing books at Barnes & Noble outlets in Texas and Washington D.C., although his tour does also include several stops in South Carolina and Florida, two key primary states.

Steve Deace, an Iowa-based talk show host, posed the question on the minds of many people aligned with the Republican Party: "Is that guy running for president or just lining up a book tour?" Deace noted that unlike most of the other candidates, Cain does not have an organized presence in Iowa, the first caucus state.

Don't really agree with that. Yes, there are a few folks who are trying to relive the 60s anti-war protests (or even the early aughts anti-Iraq war protests), but there is a gut wrenching agenda. It's the growing disparity between rich and poor and that business and government's compact with the public is broken.

There might not be an easy slogan to wrap around, but the "we are the 99%" comes close.

There's also quite a bit of substance here. Businesses on Wall Street have taken advantage of cozy relationships with government and lax oversight of existing regulations to the detriment of the public.

Does that translate to lasting power of the protest movement? I don't know.

Sarah Palin is done for, over, just about finished, thank goodness. From David Frum:

Sarah Palin’s political voice had dwindled well before she announced her decision not to run. Now it will sink altogether into inaudibility. She will be no kind of force in future national discussions.
. . .
Her political career was brief, bizarre, and sordid. But now at least it is definitively finished.

Palin will never become a party elder stateswoman. Over the past three years, it became apparent to all but a handful of cultists that her only interests were money and celebrity. She had no concept of public service, and no capacity to serve even if she had wished to do so.
. . .
In the end, she exploited, abused, or embarrassed almost everyone who had believed in her. Most embarrassing of all: she was never even a very good con artist. Everything that was false and petty and unqualified in her was visible within the first minutes of encountering her. The people she fooled were people who passionately wished to be fooled. To that extent, what was important in her story was not the faults and failings of Sarah Palin. There have always been grifters in politics. What was important in her story was the revelation of conservatism’s lack of antibodies against somebody with the faults and failings of Sarah Palin. That’s the story that should trouble us still.

I think the general purpose of the protests are as legitimate as the Tea Party. There's nothing wrong with responsible government spending or addressing financial inequality. However in both cases the messenger's interpretation is flawed. The Marxist groups are the main organizers and they have a different solution in mind. Plenty of signs in the crowd that capitalism has failed, etc. I wouldn't support the wall street protests any more than the Tea Party.

The annoying thing is that I think the economic analysis has shown some companies that it's easier and more profitable to cheat the regs as much as possible, lobby to have them eased, and lawyer up when things happen than "act as a good citizen" and spend the money and effort up front to be as environmentally safe and low-impact as reasonably possible. re: #740 thedopefishlives

See, this is what burns me: Some jackass decides they're going to slap a fee on something to squeeze a few extra dollars out of their customers. Then, instead of doing the smart thing and advertising their services as not having this fee, their competitors ALL DO THE SAME THING. It happens in the airline industry, it happens in the banking industry, and it royally pisses me off. Not to mention giving rise to a legion of conspiracy theories about how these companies must all be collaborating.

And yet, we get told that the "free market" does not allow this, that if one business does something that pisses off its customers, it'll be "punished" by having its customers flock to a competitor. In the real world, when one business does something, it's competition quickly follows suit, arguing that it's "necessary" to remain competitive.

I'll be honest, I keep wondering how far she'd have got if the McCain campaign hadn't tapped her for the VP slot in '08. She was supposedly a "rising star" at the time, somebody with whom the party had high hopes would go far. I think the last 3 years have demonstrated that she was anything but.

IIRC, her 'rising star' status was at least in part a result of Rebecca Mansour hyping the crap out of her on the blog she had at the time.

I remember the first time I saw anything on the web about her - it was on Mansour's blog. I remember thinking 'Is this for real?'

And of course, Mansour became her alter ego - she's the one who does most of the Facebook postings for Palin. They're a match made in mean-girl heaven - Mansour is every bit as petty and vindictive as her boss.

I think this is a great idea. I'm not sure what happened, but I remember credit unions being a bigger player in my younger days.

The electronic payment networks and ATMs (esp. once fees for using those became common) gave the big banks a big advantage. If your credit union only has two ATMs, how does that compete with a large bank with 100s and a solid agreement with other banks in an ATM network? And once using a non-associated ATM costs you $2-$6 per transaction there are pressures to associate with the large bank to avoid the fees.

I think I have to start looking at small independent banks again as well. I have to bet that my current bank will fall in line and start charging debit card fees in the next 18 months. I use my debit card a lot, and also have direct deposit and a bunch of automatic bill payments going. All stuff that is actually *good* for both the bank and me to implement, but I expect will probably get milked for fees in the near future as well.

It's always amusing to watch them eat their own:

First on CNN: Conservative group to target Romney

Washington (CNN) – An independent conservative group says it's going up with a series of new television commercials and radio ads in Iowa later this month as part of its campaign to "Stop Mitt Romney" from winning the Republican presidential nomination, CNN has learned.

The group, The Campaign to Defeat Barack Obama, released a web video Wednesday as part of a fundraising effort to pay for what it says will be future ad buys for the TV spot in New Hampshire and South Carolina. The three states, along with Nevada, kick off the primary and caucus season.

While Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who's making his second bid for the White House, is the front-runner in the most recent national polls in the battle for the nomination, he is not well loved by some in the tea party movement, who don't trust the candidate's conservative credentials.

"Mitt Romney's so liberal he's fought conservatives on abortion, RomneyCare, bailouts, illegal immigration, and much more," says the narrator in one of the TV ads, which also uses a clip of Romney from his 2002 run for governor in Massachusetts.

"If you support the principles of the Republican Party platform, as I do, then it's important that we make sure the GOP nominates someone who has supported and fought for those principles. On almost every single important issue facing America today, Mitt Romney has fought against conservatives and Republicans. He's been a liberal on fiscal issues, a liberal on social issues, and a liberal on national security issues," says Lloyd Marcus, Chairman of Campaign to Defeat Barack Obama, in a statement to CNN.

Spin, Crazy Lady, spin!

Republican presidential candidates started calling Sarah Palin to court her endorsement as soon as word broke that she wasn't running for president in 2012, the former Alaska governor said hours after making her announcement.

Palin declined to say which of the GOP hopefuls had made contact, but said on Fox News that her husband, Todd Palin, had been answering the phone and setting up meetings with the candidates.

“I look forward to working with them in order to help them maybe articulate their message in more detail, so we can make that best decision,” Palin said.

Ending months of speculation, Palin announced Wednesday she would not seek the GOP nomination, but would work instead to support conservative candidates for the House, the Senate and the White House.

I'd wager that she and Todd are sitting at the kitchen table, staring at the phone, waiting for it to ring. She so desperately needs to be the kingmaker.

And this bit really tells the tale of how Palin looks at government:

“Really, you don’t need a title to make a difference in this country. I think I’m proof of that,” she told Fox News host Greta Van Susteren.

A title? It's not a 'title,' it's a goddamn job. A full-time job.

Palin seems to think 'President of the United States' is somehow the same as 'Miss Congeniality.'

She can't get far enough away from politics to suit me. She fundamentally does not get it.

I'd say it did defintely since it raised the ante regarding how far bank networks could spread, especially in the northeast and even midwest where state lines were previously a constricting limitation.

Also keep in mind that the late 80s and early 90s had the S&L scandals that destroyed a lot of confidence in small banks as well. I was a contractor in the late 80s doing some work with the FSLIC and the extent that the Arizona and Texas banks got in the hole was stunning. Best I've been able to understand it, the Durbin Amendment to Dodd-Frank prevents the big banks from gouging us in secret, so now they have to do it out in the open. The intention being to remove much of the "convenience" of the big banks and promote smaller banks and credit unions.

Real estate related investment segment is deregulated; banks overinvest in it to make quick and larege profits regardless of risk. 792 lawhawk  Thu, Oct 6, 2011 9:53:23am

The GOP's Crazy Uncle has gone off his meds. Again. He's now saying that it's only a matter of time before the country starts assassinating journalists:

Everyone's favorite Kantian epistemologist Ron Paul is still unnerved by what he calls the American "assassination" of the U.S.-born al Qaeda leader and terrorist recruiter Anwar al-Awlaki last week. Yesterday, Paul told an audience at the National Press Club that citizens needed to protest the killing, or else the government may start eyeing new targets for assassination soon: "Can you imagine being put on a list because you're a threat? What's going to happen when they come to the media? What if the media becomes a threat? Or a professor becomes a threat?...This is the way this works. It's incrementalism," he said.

"It's slipping and sliding, let me tell you," he said. Al-Awlaki was killed in Yemen by a missile fired from an American drone aircraft; it was the first time since the Sept. 11 attacks that an American citizen had been deliberately targeted and killed by American forces. Also during his speech, Paul compared al-Awlaki, and Samir Kahn, another American-turned-al Qaeda operative killed in the attack, to Nazi war criminals. "All the Nazi criminals were tried. They were taken to court and then executed. The reason we do this is because we want to protect the rule of law," said Paul.

Paul, who also announced that he had raised $8 million from supporters, said that Obama was to blame for the erosion of civil liberties, and called the "assassination" an impeachable offense: "We have crossed that barrier from republic to dictatorship, to tyranny to empire."

Where to begin with this - how about the comparison with Nazi war criminals.

We tried Nazi war criminals after the war ended. Before it ended? We pursued 'em and either killed or captured Nazis. The war al Qaeda launched against the US hasn't ended, and people like Awlaki who have essentially renounced their US citizenship by consorting with AQ are still valid targets.

Yet, there is some kernel of validity to the concern of a slippery slope - where does the justification for assassinating enemies of the US end - at US borders? Who are valid targets? Paul just isn't the one who can be taken seriously on this.

Also applying for jobs at Target. The requirement is seasonal but I'm wondering if it will affect my application negatively if I answer that I want a regular position.

Resist obeying emails from the North Carolina job creators asking you to light up in order to support employment of the tobacco pickers.

Companies like Target and Wal-Mart find that it is more profitable for them to hire 2 part-time workers to do the job of one full-timer, because they don't have to provide benefits for the part-timers.

I swear to God, I'm not kidding, JihadWatch has up a tribute piece to Steve Jobs, all about how he could never have accomplished all of this in a Muslim society.

I did learn something from this remarkable piece, or rather from the comments--I was not aware that Jobs' biological father was Syrian.

The demented single-mindedness of Robert Spencer and the JihadWatch readers I already knew about.

Try celery. Crunching it up can help satisfy the oral stuff, plus it's no-calorie so you won't gain weight but it'll fill you up some.

I hate celery. No flavor and the stringy part always gets stuck in my teeth. Got another suggestion? Maybe carrots.

Gum.

Seriously though, when I was in the "quitting" stage, I used swizzle sticks

No chance of weight gain
Unlike gum, no sugar, no loss of flavor, not bad for your teeth (unless you grind on it)
Cheap

There is sugarless gum. Some is actually good for your teeth (because it stimulates saliva production). Ask your dentist.

BofA chief: We have a 'right to make a profit'

And your customers have the right to tell you to piss off.
Two way streets are two way!

I will repeat Andy Borowitz's comment on this: BofA is like a man saved from a burning building, who promptly kicks the fireman in the balls.

re: #609 000G

"Right to make a profit" sounds suspiciously like that guaranteed minimum income idea floated by some OWS dude that the conservatives pounced on. It's actually much worse.

No one has a 'right' to make a profit. You have the right to try to make a profit.

re: #646 Alouette

I have wondered how many self-congratulatory, socially aware people who attended all the "Triangle Shirtwaist Centennial" memorials were wearing stuff from Gap and H&M.

The fact is that unless you make your own clothes from "fair trade fabrics" you buy--from someplace that sells "fair trade" fabrics, you can't avoid sweatshop clothing.

You can try. And it's getting somewhat easier these days.

They're going to picket Jobs for what reason?

"He gave no glory to God".

And don't you try to argue with that statement. Expanding knowledge and technology and shit doesn't count. God is only glorified by big signs telling people they're going to hell. Can you find a picture of Steve Jobs with a big sign talking about people going to hell? No? The Phelps clan rest their case.

Death panels?

Secret panel can put Americans on "kill list'

American militants like Anwar al-Awlaki are placed on a kill or capture list by a secretive panel of senior government officials, which then informs the president of its decisions, according to officials.

There is no public record of the operations or decisions of the panel, which is a subset of the White House's National Security Council, several current and former officials said. Neither is there any law establishing its existence or setting out the rules by which it is supposed to operate.

Margie Phelps, daughter of rogue church’s pastor Fred Phelps, tweeted their plans to picket Job’s funeral FROM HER IPHONE.

She wrote that Jobs went in hell. He served himself and not God, and he taught people to sin, Phelps said.

Phelps defended her use of Jobs’ technology, saying “Rebels mad cuz I used iPhone to tell you Steve Jobs is in hell. God created iPhone for that purpose!

God created the iPhone on the 9th day. They forgot to put that part in the Bible.

I'm going to find a credit union. I'm sick of banks. They have no vested interest in me as a customer.

I'm going to find a credit union because I've caught Chase making a couple of major errors--and I'm not the kind of person who routinely figures out they didn't give me five cents when I balance my checkbook. If I notice they're screwing up, they're really, really, screwing up.

Carrots are less zero-calorie, but they're very very close to it, and they have a nice texture and flavor.

re: #729 Killgore Trout

I think the general purpose of the protests are as legitimate as the Tea Party. There's nothing wrong with responsible government spending or addressing financial inequality. However in both cases the messenger's interpretation is flawed. The Marxist groups are the main organizers and they have a different solution in mind. Plenty of signs in the crowd that capitalism has failed, etc. I wouldn't support the wall street protests any more than the Tea Party.

I might not agree with their presentation or every group supporting them, but I damned sure support every American's First Amendment right to peaceably assemble without having the the crap beaten out of them.
