Photos: The Truth About Breitbart’s Race-Baiting ‘Black Panthers’ Story

The right wing is morally bankrupt
Wingnuts • Views: 27,407

As we pointed out on Monday, Andrew Breitbart shamelessly tried to promote a completely fake, utterly dishonest story that Barack Obama “marched with” the New Black Panther Party during a 2007 event in Selma, Alabama. In fact, there were more than 10,000 people at this event, and it had nothing to with the NBPP — it was a commemoration of the 1965 Voting Rights March.

And to drive home the point that Breitbart’s story is pure right wing race-baiting with no basis in fact whatsoever, Adam Shah discovered a Reuters photo that shows who Obama was really marching with that day: civil rights hero Fred Shuttlesworth (seated in wheelchair), who died yesterday at the age of 89:

It’s an absolute disgrace that the entire right wing blogosphere parroted this false story, without even a token attempt to discover the facts.

UPDATE at 10/6/11 3:33:15 pm

LGF reader LawHawk discovered another photo from this 2007 event in Selma, showing President Bill Clinton greeting Obama and Rev. Shuttlesworth:

It's been already well established the right wing doesn't care about pesky things like "facts" (remember the Michelle Bachmann vaccine fiasco? A lot of GOP leaning folks STILL think what she said is true!).

The right are concerned with one thing: Destroying Obama at any cost.

They don't care how nasty they have to get.

They don't care how much they distort the truth.

They don't care about the ethical or moral or legal implications of what they are doing.

They don't care if they make America worse off in the process.

And they sure as hell don't care who gets caught in the crossfire.

They just want the "evil socialist black man" (TM) out of the White House. Yesterday.

And they will all be in church on Sunday praising Jaysus and patting themselves on the back for being such good Christians.

Except for Breitbart, who will be nursing a hangover and wondering where he left his underwear.

From Shah at the link above:

This closes the book on the latest shameful attempt at race-baiting by Breitbart, McCarthy, and Hannity.

If by "closes the book" you mean "provides another piece of proof they are lying which they will completely ignore as they repeat their lies ad nauseum", then yeah.

7 gummitch  Thu, Oct 6, 2011 11:18:16am

If there was even one individual in that crowd who once met someone in the NBPP, then Obama was marching with that person -- regardless of the other 10,000 people. Hell, we don't even need that person, we can speculate that MAYBE that person existed. Within minutes, every wingnut blog will be reporting on the president pallin' around with terrorists.

This is a result of wingnuts taking that show they used to do in high school assemblies too seriously--you know, the one where they show how you've had sex with everyone who ever had sex with someone who had sex with your partner.

A friend of mine once worked herself into rather a panic, upon realizing that by that standard she had had sex with her brother. We had to reassure her that they only meant this in terms of disease prevention, and that having six degrees of nookie separation between you and a sibling is not really incest.

Marching with Shuttlesworth? Pfft. It's clearly a photoshop. I can tell from some of the pixels.

What a fabulous picture.....All those old lions and lionesses of the civil rights movement, with a future black President with them. It must have been astounding to go from separate bathrooms to a President in the White House.....I swear if you look hard enough at the picture you can see Martin Luther King smiling.

Obama said at the end of the press conference this morning that Republicans need to stop voting against things they would normally support just because he agrees with them.

28 lawhawk  Thu, Oct 6, 2011 11:49:39am

There's Clinton greeting and then marching with Obama and Rev. Shuttlesworth.

Or, if you prefer - from the date of the march in 2007.

Original caption from 2007 posting:

SELMA, AL - MARCH 04: Presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) (C) and former President Bill Clinton (R) greet civil rights activist Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth during a march to the Edmund Pettus Bridge to commemorate the 1965 'Bloody Sunday' Voting Rights march March 4, 2007 in Selma, Alabama. During the 1965 march, which was to go from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, police beat back the marchers when they reached the Pettus Bridge. (Photo by Scott Olson/Getty Images)

re: #27 darthstar

Obama said at the end of the press conference this morning that Republicans need to stop voting against things they would normally support just because he agrees with them.

I liked what I read of that presser. KT said it was dry, but he seemed to hit the right notes with this:

"As we look to next week, every senator out there that is looking to vote against this jobs bill, needs to explain why they would vote against something ... at such a crucial time for our economy," he said during a briefing with reporters Thursday.

"If Capitol Hill says the current jobs bill can't pass in its current form, we're just gonna keep going at it. Each part of this bill, I want an explanation why they think it shouldn't be passed."

"I would love nothing more than to see Congress act so aggressively that I can't campaign against them as the do-nothing Congress," he said at the conclusion of a wide-ranging press conference lasting more than an hour.

Sounds good to me.

35 lawhawk  Thu, Oct 6, 2011 12:08:09pm

Still more photos from the march commemoration from 2007.

Including one from at the bridge itself (and Al Sharpton is in the crowd near the Clintons).

It took me all of two seconds to track down photos from the march.

Aww recusancy, you weren't on the cc: list. Any Black person who doesn't validate and glorify white conservatism with every breath is "racist", now.

I'm disgusted. Time and time again I've wondered when the Right's shameless antics will stop shocking me and I will greet each shameless incident with a "there they go again" of acceptance rather than a "WTF!?" of alarm.

The right wing is graceless, therefore they cannot be disgraced.
