Hatefest in Washington DC: The Values Voter Summit

Every sick and twisted right wing meme in America
Wingnuts • Views: 28,592

If there’s one right wing event that sums up the reasons why I ran screaming away from these lunatics more than any other, it’s the Values Voter Summit, put on every year by a devil’s brew of extreme religious fanatics preaching virulent hatred against everyone who isn’t them.

At the Values Voter Summit, you’ll find every sick and twisted right wing meme in existence; open racism, white supremacists, theocrats (real ones, who want to literally replace the Constitution with the Bible), creationists, historical revisionists, End Times believers, hard core misogynists, deranged homophobia and bigotry of all kinds. And those are just the speakers.

This year, as in every year, it’s attended by all the major Republican politicians, sucking up to these freaks for the almighty vote — because the haters have a dedicated base of deluded drones. Their votes can make a difference for Republicans, and the hate groups are always trying to force their primitive beliefs on the rest of America. It’s a match made in hell.

So we have the spectacle of Mitt Romney bowing and scraping in front of an audience that considers Mormons to be one rung above Muslims on the Fundamentalist Ladder of Hatred. It’s pathetic, and it reveals something very disturbing about the people who represent the “conservative movement:” they’re not “conservative” at all, really. The best word to describe the modern right wing and its Dark Ages religious leaders is “reactionary.” These people are deeply afraid of the modern world, and would gladly exchange it for the Spanish Inquisition if they could.

Right Wing Watch has a lot of posts on the Values Voter Summit, which is taking place this weekend in Washington DC. Here’s one of the videos they posted today, featuring religious right leader Robert Jeffress telling his acolytes that the United States is doomed. These are the people to whom the Republican Party is pandering:

This, people, is the difference between this breed of madness and a bunch of idiots with placards.

I really wish people were more willing to call these people out. I'm sick and tired of how you can only be considered to be voting for "values" if you're a bigoted theocrat.

I really don't like the apocalyptic types who think the end times are going to come soon. I feel like it may make them act more irresponsibility about the state of things now, and neglect improving things for the future.

Even worse, a few of the real extremists come across as actually trying to bring it about.

It's this time of year again? What a way to ruin a perfect Fall weekend than for these goons to celebrate their hate together.

The ending of DADT really gashes these folks. Good.

Rush Limbaugh says Occupy Wall Street protestors are a) small in numbers and b) paid. The reason for their existence? Democrats were jealous of the Tea Party, so Democrats created a left-wing version of it:

Meanwhile, in England, David Cameron had this to say about gay marriage:

"I once stood before a Conservative conference and said it shouldn’t matter whether commitment was between a man and a woman, a woman and a woman, or a man and another man. You applauded me for that. Five years on, we’re consulting on legalising gay marriage. And to anyone who has reservations, I say: Yes, it’s about equality, but it’s also about something else: commitment. Conservatives believe in the ties that bind us; that society is stronger when we make vows to each other and support each other. So I don’t support gay marriage despite being a Conservative. I support gay marriage because I’m a Conservative."

Compare and contrast with the alleged conservatives currently in the Republican party race for the Presidency.

Also, to be clear, I think Cameron's statements more reflect the differences between the American voting public and British voting public, rather than some major ethical difference between the Republicans and the Conservatives.

More Santorum derp:

Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) told the audience at the Value Voters Summit on Friday that they should also pay attention to the husbands and wives of the people actually on the ballot.

“When you look at someone to determine whether they’d be the right person for public office, look at who they lay down with at night and what they believe in,” Santorum said.

“Who is the person at their side who has.. the closest counselor to that person? If you want to find out if that person who you are voting for is going to stand tall and stand tough, find out where the spouse of that person is,” Santorum said.

I wonder if they will close the loophole that allows Pap smears. After all, if cancer is found and a hysterectomy is ordered, the woman might be pregnant, and that means it would be an abortion.

McCain was right; the health of the mother is a loophole you can drive a truck through.

The Value Voters Summit where there are no values, just jerks who think they have values. These are the same people who stand up and tell gay teenagers that they deserved to be bullied because they're. The same people who convince themselves that Shariah Law is creeping yet want the Bible to mean more in society than the Constitution. The same people who whine about the size of government yet have no problem using the government to shove their twisted morality down the rest of our throats.

Kelly: Protesters To Be ‘Met With Force’ If They Target Officers

“You know, we’ll see. Right now they’re on private property and people who own that property don’t have the power to eject them,” he said.

But Brookfield Office Properties, which owns Zuccotti Park, seems to be slowly building a case against protesters, saying Thursday that the protestors are interfering with the use of the park by others and are creating sanitary problems.

“Sanitation is a growing concern,” Brookfield said in a statement. “Normally the park is cleaned and inspected every weeknight. . . because the protestors refuse to cooperate. . .the park has not been cleaned since Friday, September 16th and as a result, sanitary conditions have reached unacceptable levels.”

Wall Street Protests Risk Harm to NYC Economy, Mayor Says

“What they’re trying to do is take the jobs away from people working in this city,” Bloomberg said today during his weekly appearance on WOR radio. “They’re trying to take away the tax base we have. None of this is good for tourism.”

The mayor’s comments are his first addressing the economic impact of the protests, which began Sept. 17. The demonstrations have cost the city about $2 million in officers’ overtime, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said yesterday.

Wall Street contributed about 7 percent of city tax revenue in fiscal year 2010, according to a November report by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli. DiNapoli, who described the securities industry as the city’s “economic engine,” said one in seven jobs in the city, and one in 13 in the state, is associated with Wall Street.

I am reading Richard Wright's memoir right now. Quite a bit about hunger in that one. Wingers like Gunlock live in a fantasy world. I mean really these are the same people who think it's "White liberal guilt" to talk about racism in our country's history.

And it's "class warfare" to ever say the words "poor people" without berating them with conservative morality trips.

It's an obvious reference to the subprime mortgage crisis and what followed from that. The consequences of this radical failure of "capitalism" are still virulent in today's economy. It's not adressed yet. That's what that banner is pointing out (something the President also noted). It's hardly a call for dekulakization and gulag.

‘Occupy Wall Street’ Protest Prompts Concern About Conditions In Zuccotti Park

...The physical occupation, however, doesn’t seem to be going anywhere any time soon. Zuccotti Park’s owners – Brookfield Office Properties – are required to grant the public access to the park. However, they’re somewhat frustrated by the conditions that are emerging there.

“Sanitation is a growing concern,” Brookfield said in a statement. “Normally the park is cleaned and inspected every weeknight… because the protestors refuse to cooperate… the park has not been cleaned since Friday, September 16th and as a result, sanitary conditions have reached unacceptable levels.”

Police have fielded complaints about the noise, garbage and barricades that make it difficult to get anywhere, especially during the marches, reported WCBS 880′s Marla Diamond.

I think their lack of clarity is pretty much in line with the hegemonial "understanding" of "capitalism". I don't think the average guy or GOP voter has a better or clearer understanding of today's economy than those OWS people.

I am fairly sure that this overall lack of clarity and understanding helped a lot in furthering the crises. Can't really blame people who realize the obvious failings of the real system and then turn around and blame the carricature description of reality called "capitalism" for it.

Funnily enough, anti-communists and communists describe and explain "capitalism" in the very same terms.

Asking for clarity is fine. But it should not be a demand just posed towards the critics. If you state that you are "for capitalism", I think you too need to be able to say what that is supposed to mean.

Market trader banned from selling 'Taliban Hunting Club' T-shirts for being 'offensive'

A market trader has been banned from selling a 'morale-boosting' anti-Taliban T-shirt by council bosses who fear it will offend people.

The T-shirts, which feature the words 'Taliban Hunting Club' around a target set behind a skull and two guns, have become popular with soldiers on the front line as well as their relatives at home.

However stall holder Mark Brown, who runs a military goods pitch a Louth market in Lincolnshire, has been told to stop selling the product by East Lindsey District Council.

Today is the tenth anniversary of the beginning of the war in Afghanistan.

The authority acted after it received a single complaint from a member of the public about the T-shirts, which were described as 'politically sensitive and offensive'.

Who the fuck would be offended, a terrorist?

I am under no illusions that it is not the case that many of the people at these protests are on part of what would generally be considered the radical left, be they strong Marxists, anarchists, clueless university students, and/or whatever. And, obviously, these kinds of protests are going to automatically attract those types and others.

That all being said, that doesn't mean the protests cannot be positive. The left, as whole, really needs to energize and organize and do something to drag the national discussion back leftwards towards the center, instead of being between radical right and moderate/center right. Hopefully, while minimizing the influence of the more crazy elements on the fringe, like truthers or the like.

If I found any one in a combat unit I commanded wearing one I'd order them to toss it. It may be necessary to kill someone, in combat, but taking joy in it is a sign of a sick mind who can't be trusted. They may decide that the people in their unit would be fun to kill.

Definite discipline problems.

I get that. I also have trouble, though, dealing with civilians who assume that they get to have the offensive t-shirt without bothering with the nightmares.

And also, in regards to the IDF, there's the twin questions of 'purity of arms', and 'the eyes of the world are on you', so, no.

Amusing aside:

Scott Brown's camp has been opening his anti-Elizabeth Warren campaign with accusations that she's an out-of-touch elitist who teaches at Harvard Law School.

Funny thing is? Politico reports that Massachusetts voters don't care about that so much.

I think it's illustrative of a few things: first, that Republican talking points have become so limited, and so utterly predictable, that this stuff is just about all they have.

And two, that they're so lost in the echo chamber of their own primary base, they didn't even consider whether or not the same anti-intellectual bullcrap that plays well in the South would also work in Massachusetts.

Tasteless and offensive, but vulgarity (alas) is not against the law.
