Lots of applause for absolute rejection of gay marriage.

What could be conservative about two people making a firm commitment to each other, a family framework?

You got me. Then again these are the same people who convince themselves they favor small government and individual liberties while they compare gay marriage to legalizing bestiality.

Ed Morrissey says, be wise about your sources.

This is the guy who parrots Andrew Breitbart's fake stories, and recycles every bogus climate change denier's claim.

It's pathetic to hear these people congratulating themselves on their integrity and fact-checking. What a joke.

I think first cousins should get genetic testing, but the idea of it being wildly dangerous is overblown.

I don't know. I've been seeing these maps, and I don't get the point. There's a lot more cultural privelege and bias going on in the comparison than I'm comfortable with.

Named after both grandfathers. It's funny I share two thirds of a name with my paternal grandfather yet I find him to be this mystery. He died eight years before I was born. I'm proud to have his name as my middle and last names though since from all I know of him he was a great guy. I think in some funny way many sons become their fathers. I've been growing a beard the past couple months and it makes me look quite a lot like my Dad. My Mom is funny of course. She hates me with the beard but hates my Dad the blue moon he goes clean shaved.

Except, of course, for Massachusetts, where they've successfully held out for both.

The problem is that a huge assumption is being made the other way--that states that allow cousin marriages, and people who enter into them are comic, poor, rural, bad, and 'incestuous'. Cue banjos.

I am absolutely committed to same-sex marriage, but I don't see why I've got to act as though two cousins getting married is all icky and to be giggled over. The subtext of this has nothing to do with gay couples getting married, and I don't care for it much.

First cousins isn't incest, though.

The church banned cousin marriages during the Middle Ages--consanguinity ruled out a whole raft of people that modern folks would consider barely related. However, the nobility routinely got dispensations, and it's suspected that most of the common laity didn't even know these regulations existed.

If so, that's extremely shortsighted and foolish thinking. That's basically saying conservatives are for being behind the curve and not doing anything new or different, regardless of the merits of the idea. For the U.S., that would mean resigning ourselves to being followers in the world, rather than leaders.

Of course selectively. Because there is a big, big reality of traditions in history and cultures, so vast that it encompasses all humanity – that is the reality and also part of the reason why the opposite (avant-garde progressivists, if you will) are a rarer breed. But conservative extremists/radicals usually have magically found just that one single tradition that is true and supreme above all others – it's basically a tradition-based supremacism.

A while back, yes. Birth of a Nation type of b.s.?

Yup. But much more international. Lots of concern trolling from Great Britain and other nations about the French "raping" the white women of Germany with their negroes etc.

Good article in German: [Link: www.historisches-lexikon-bayerns.de...]

It had a pretty tragic follow-up: All of the "rhineland bastards", i.e. children conceived between black French soldiers and white women that got apprehended by the Nazis during their occupation got sterilized.

re: #96 OhCrapIHaveACrushOnSarahPalin

A while back, yes. Birth of a Nation type of b.s.?

Here is an article in English by probably the best scholar on the subject: [Link: rac.sagepub.com...]

The 'Black Shame' campaign used stereotypical images of 'racially primitive' , sexually depraved black colonial soldiers threatening 'white women' in 1920s Germany to manufacture widespread concern and generate panic about the presence of tens of thousands of occupying French troops from colonial Africa on German soil. The campaign, which originated with the German government, quickly developed a momentum of its own and became an international phenomenon, spanning the political divide and incorporating figures from the Left and Right, trades unionists, Christian groups, women s organisations and key public figures including Edmund D. Morel and Bertrand Russell. It had followers throughout Europe, the US and Australia and was promoted through the modern media. The author here explores the ways in which the racial, sexual, class and national stereotypes that fuelled the campaign interrelated and reinforced one another, creating 'interlinked discriminations'.

Of course. They don't actually care about the mother or the fetus or reality. It's the concept and act of abortion that they're worried about. It means a woman has some degree of control over her body and that cannot be allowed. Same reason they want to ban contraception.

Menstrual extraction was developed as a technique to help women gain and maintain control over their menstrual cycles and reproductive lives.[1][2][3][4][5] It can be used as a method of very early termination of pregnancy (abortion) and/or as a simple way to remove menstrual blood.

A local state senator here in Virginia whom I saw speak recently was talking about the state GOP's attacks on planned parenthood. He pointed out that groups like PP are often the only recourse women especially poorer ones have when they need help for diseases, etc. What a truly despicable bunch this is. I understand opposing federal funding of abortion but fact is we don't federally fund abortion via the Hyde Amendment. These people are ghouls.

Just the name of Planned Parenthood sends these loons into a frothing-at-the-mouth frenzy. I can't even totally blame them; most have been inundated with pictures of aborted fetuses and horror stories of "baby killings" since they were in grammar school. The interesting thing is how the Virus got into the computer systems. Most military computers have the USB ports disabled (often physically) as a security precaution, but the Creech AFB (where the drones are flown from) computers don't because they use removable drives to load map information, which is a really stupid idea for exactly these reasons.

The drone program has grown so fast it's not surprising that there are these kind of vulnerabilities in the program.

These are classified computers. There is by design an air gap between them and the rest of the world. They don't have internet connections and they don't normally allow external media hookups. This vulnerability is interesting because it's a function of using of the shelf commercial solutions within the drone program.

You don't have to be directly connected to the internet in order to be connected to the internet. That's what Stuxnet basically proved. The internet brings every electronic device on earth in its reach.

Without saying anything else about anything else (I would need to watch and research more), I did wince to see that the clearest and most professional looking sign in the front page photo of the Occupy Portland March was an anti-Israel sign.

Somehow the homemade ones feel more heart-felt, even if they are sometimes misspelled.

I still don't think anyone should have been beaten. But face the fact: the police set up a line. The protesters counted down and then advanced across that line very aggressively. At that point, it's a little more than civil disobedience.

C'mon. You can't attack police like that. If you were do do that as an indivilual they could legally shoot you for it. They used non lethal response because of the protests but you simply can't attack police like that. A beatdown and pepper spray were completely appropriate.

NYPD has been overreacting to the demonstrations from the start, though. Some of those cops definitely seem to be ready to hurt people.

They should use whatever force is necessary to stop the crowd from advancing. But some of the beatings I've seen on video go pretty far past that point and turn into payback. That's not right.

This Perry guy is a total whack-job.

In response to questions from ThinkProgress about the booing of a gay soldier at the last GOP debate, Jeffress said “there’s good reason for keeping the tradition of not having homosexuals serve in the military.” He made the patently false claim that “70 percent of the gay population” has AIDS. “It’s a fact that it’s a gay disease so there’s a reasonable reason to exclude gays from the military,” he explained, suggesting that gay service members are more likely to spread disease.

If Perry was smart... ahh, fuck it. Nevermind.

Slowly moving forward against a police line (or against being caged) is considered attacking the police? A beat down is not an appropriate response. How's about the police respond by moving out of the way and letting democracy take place? So what if the crowd advances?

(and I am actually asking questions since I'm not paying near enough attention to this, but cop using Batons always seems wrong unless they are in real danger.)

I guess the signs and action of this rally are part of why I don't do much political protesting anymore. Last real rally I went to was the Jon Stewart one last fall which was fun because it was good-natured. I went to a few anti Iraq war rallies in the Bush years in D.C and man I hated how instead of being about Iraq it turned in to soapboxes about Mumia al-Jamal(I'm anti DP staunchly now as I was then) and anti Israel crap which really pissed me off since Israel scapegoating ticks me off. The best true political rally I've ever been to though had to been a Save Darfur rally in 2006 that spring. Got to see Maunte Bol (man was that a tall dude) and the then archbishop of the D.C Archidiocese, Theodore McCarrick, who I respect more than most high Catholic clergy since he's not a jerk to pro choice Catholic politicians who want to get communion amongst other things. I was down in D.C last night not for the rally but having dinner with a friend. Now I may be going to a pro choice rally in Richmond next week but part of that will be socially motivated and I think that crowd will be a little saner too.

I guess that's what makes me different from them. As someone from an upper middle class household, I'd like to see more people get the chances I have: go to college, get a degree, etc. Hardly radical but also why I don't relate to the far left who seem to think being rich means you're a bad person.

wow what a massive misunderstanding of whats going on here.

Being rich doesn't make you bad, but it does (if you're truly rich, and I doubt anybody posting on here is) give you massively unreasonable power and influence in the government, and there's a pattern of people/organizations using that influence to further their own ends at the cost of the less-rich and in fact the nation as a whole.

My husband was lower middle class, and he has a degree from an expensive school. Anyone can go to college; they just have to be willing to pay off sometimes silly loans.

This is why art history majors usually have rich parents. Kids from poorer families have to get degrees that will pay back their loans, like engineering.

re: #337 EmmmieG

Your husband also isn't an eighteen year old applying to college now. The admissions rules have changed drastically over the last decade. It's much, much harder to get into a good school (by a factor of 3 to 10, depending on the school).

Case and point, a friend of my cousin was the Valedictorian of his high school, a three season star athlete, good SAT scores, a couple of AP courses and turned wooden bowls in his spare time. He applied to every Ivy League school, got into none of them. Which isn't surprising given that most of them have admissions rates between 6 and 12 percent.

To be a competitive applicant these days to a good school you need a whole bunch of extracurricular activities in addition to the standard good grades and test scores. That costs serious money, both in terms of fees and in terms of lost job opportunities. Most teenagers with summer jobs end up penalized in admissions these days because they weren't spending their time doing something "constructive".

These are the same ilk that show up to the G20 riots. Violent Marxists and anarchists looking to instigate conflicts with police. I have no sympathy for them and shouldn't be allowed to run around the city, shut down streets, bridges and attack police at will.
If the police violate proceedure there are mechanisms to deal with and I woulnd't trust the edited videos the leftists are circulating on youtube. They lie every bit as much as Breitbart.

Running water for illegal aliens in Alabama is now a felony

under one provision of the state’s immigration law, HB 56, it is a felony for an undocumented immigrant to even attempt to do business with Alabama’s state-run water agencies:

An alien not lawfully present in the United States shall not enter into or attempt to enter into a business transaction with the state or a political subdivision of the state and no person shall enter into a business transaction or attempt to enter into a business transaction on behalf of an alien not lawfully present in the United States. [...]

A violation of this section is a Class C felony.

In Alabama, Class C felonies are punishable by up to ten years in prison — meaning that undocumented people in Alabama can now be locked up for an entire decade if they attempt to take a bath in their own home.

Protests like this are going to bring out people who want to piggy-back their cause onto a protest that's getting news coverage.

re: #402 albusteve

I heard one protester with a cool knit hat talking about The ratio of lower-quality subprime mortgages originated rose from the historical 8% or lower range to approximately 20% from 2004-2006, with much higher ratios in some parts of the U.S. A high percentage of these subprime mortgages, over 90% in 2006 for example, were adjustable-rate mortgages These two changes were part of a broader trend of lowered lending standards and higher-risk mortgage products. Further, U.S. households had become increasingly indebted, with the ratio of debt to disposable personal income rising from 77% in 1990 to 127% at the end of 2007, much of this increase mortgage-related.

Then he said F*ck Wall Street...

Look, I'm going to come right out and say it, even at risk of it being extremely unpopular with some people here.

If there are a bunch of Marxists and commies at these rallies pushing their causes? Good! That's exactly what this country needs right now.

Why? Because the right has been able to largely make the population forget what a real left wing looks like. What real communists are. We're a country where center-right is now socialist, far right is moderate, and the "right wing" is now located halfway to Saturn.

Why? Because I credit a huge number of the gains made in the U.S. for workers and labour to socialists and communists. They didn't make the country Marxist, but they helped make it more fair and forced people into changing capitalism to be less exploitative, as that was the only way to stop them.

Why? Because the decline of the middle and working classes and union seems to largely mirror the decline of the radical left in the U.S. Sure, there were a bunch of kooks, but they served as a balance to the far right which has been sorely lacking for years now.

Why? Because people need to be reminded that there are options beyond having a small, vastly powerful, vastly wealthy upper class that largely runs the show. The middle and working class needs to remember that they are the majority and they deserve their fair share.

And if some Marxists waving signs around Wall Street does any of this, well, then I'm damn well OK with it.

447 HAL2010  Fri, Oct 7, 2011 3:46:42pm

Well it's on now. The pastor, Robert Jeffress, who introduced Rick Perry at the Values Voters Summit, has just opened a can of evangelical whup-ass on Mitt Romney. Here's the money quote:

Jeffress described Romney's Mormon faith as a “cult,” and said evangelicals had only one real option in the 2012 primaries. Continue Reading “That is a mainstream view, that Mormonism is a cult,” Jeffress told reporters here. “Every true, born again follower of Christ ought to embrace a Christian over a non-Christian.” Asked by POLITICO if he believed Romney is a Christian, Jeffress answered: “No.”

Surprised?

It's a testament to FDR's intuition and wisdom that he, an aristocratic scion of a monied family, could see that conditions in the US could not continue unless inequality was addressed in a way to avoid a real social collapse that would have been more fertile ground for the real Leninists.

So, here's what we have after 3 weeks of OWS:
1) Radical Marxist, Leninist and Anarchist organizers with a history of antisemitism.
2) Statements and signs supporting communism, advocating violence, condemning Jews
3) violent attacks on police

Makes the Tea Party look pretty reasonable in comparison.

That statement would be so much more reasonable if it weren't for Tea Partiers establishing long-term cuddly relationships with nativist militias, white supremacists, anti-abortion militants that terrorize doctors, Christian supremacists, backer of reparitive treatment for gay, sovereign citizens, Neo Confederates, and a Whitman's sampler of racists--up to and including pastors belonging to the Hagee tradition that the Holocaust was intended to make the Jews return to Israel. Shit--their appointed, enthroned spokesperson was Glen Beck.

I have very little nice to say about these protests. I laid out exact why I dislike these kinds of protests many, many posts ago: people present without a strong agenda will be appropriated by those with radical agendas as being in agreement, even when the aggregate nature of the crowd. The Anti-Zionism, Anti-Israel, Anti-Semitism I roundly condemn; if I were present at one of these protests, I'd walk away after some very loud, choice words. That's what I did in 1999. The smorgasbord of Marxists is as inevitable as slugs after rain, and just as annoying...though god help me I know enough of them to understand that most are naive rather than militant. The anarchists genuinely worry me, because they don't care about the crowd they're in any more than they do the people they're protesting...they're just looking for a chance to start something with the authorities.

But what's good for the goose if good for the gander: I have exactly zero truck with gloating over people being injured, armchair authoritarianism, or pornographic self-righteousness. Whether it was called for, by the book, or whatever is an entirely different subject than your presentation of that subject, which is self-indulgent . I will not side with you or support your comments.

Well, I can't speak for others, but personally I have no issue with KT having concerns/doubts/not being supportive of the protests. He may even be right about them.

That being said, part of what bothers me is just the way he has generally come off as a bit gleeful at finding stuff that he feels supports his view. It sometimes feels almost, to me, as if he wrote it all off from the start and wants it to match his early negative opinion of it, rather than being disappointed that it seems not to be taking a path he could support.

I'm also a bit uneasy with his seeming enthusiasm towards police actions against the protesters. Now, they may or may not deserve it, but it's hard for me to get behind someone that seems to be cheering violence of any kind, even self defense.

I'm not saying KT is intending to come across this way or that it's the way he feels, but I can only state how he has been coming across to me.

Credit where credit is due. I'll freely admit to my ignorance of Lizard history, and enough people have pointed out KT's early opposition to the TP for me to realize I'm probably wrong there.

Killgore is not into adulation...he's into presenting information to be looked at objectively...of course he has an opinion and generously shares it but he has no political agenda beyond what's right and what isn't, what's smart and what's not...there are very few posters here that are uncommitted to a political party, he's one and I admire him just for that alone

Funny thing is, either comparison is actually bad.

You can be perfectly critical of the TP and be 100% right without referring to the Racist Crazies or Dick Armey astroturfers.

In the same way, OWS is quite right despite ANSWER, Adbusters, and homeless crazy anti-semites.

In both cases people use stuff like that (red herrings even, lol) to distract from the core messages of a movement they don't like.

the koch bros and their ilk are doing everything they can to keep the rank and file of the tea party and OWS from realizing they are on the same side on many issues

re: #476 Simply Sarah

He's always been gleeful at finding stuff that supports his view. That's nothing new. I found it helpful to overlook the tone; and just find out for myself.

I'm sitting here thinking about the whole anti-Mormon thing at this summit.

I don't think Romney should leave. Why should he let them drive him away? He should also not apologize for his beliefs.

I will be disappointed if nobody else at the conference says something. If I were at a conference, and one of the speakers said anti-Semitic things, I would either reply to it, or leave.

The thing is - when he started with the tea party stuff, it was hard on me, and many other folks here. And it was difficult to back up, take a good, hard look at what was going on, and decide - nah, that's not a good thing. But at this point? I appreciate what KT did way back then, as aggravating as it was when it was going on, and as hard as it was on me to pay attention. FBV said basically the same thing earlier - without KT's initial research into this stuff, we may have gotten sucked into the craziness ourselves.

500 Obdicut  Fri, Oct 7, 2011 4:12:31pm

re: #484 Killgore Trout

It kind of comes off as though you didn't want people to agree with you, or wanted to raise the bar for agreement very high, by taking pleasure in the violence.

I think that these protests will probably squibble away, if they don't I don't think they'll be able to actually police themselves enough not to welcome anti-semites and WWP guys in. I have no problem with someone who's very heavily socialist; I do have a problem with revolutionaries. Revolutions didn't solve much. Our Democracy was not hugely different or better than Great Britain's after the revolution. The change of government comes from a revolution of ideas, not the violent uprising.

So I don't really mind someone who thinks that we should have a compelte command economy-- I mean, I think that they're wrong, but since I want a mixed economy, there are some things we can agree on.

But someone who wants to get to that command economy through revolution? No thanks. So in a large way, I agree with you. I don't think that these protests are worse than the Tea Party because I feel that the issue that these protesters is protesting at least exists-- an overly comfortable relationship between government and banking, with not enough regulatory control, whereas the tea partiers were mostly objecting to fiction.

And I can't summon up anything more positive than being a little freaked out by the applause for violence. Especially with the history of police brutality towards leftist protesters in this country.

501 Simply Sarah  Fri, Oct 7, 2011 4:12:35pm

re: #468 Killgore Trout

Excellent post! I'll give you a big upding for honesty and a well stated case. A lot of people are dancing around the issue, trying to pretend that they aren't Marxists or are insignificant or whatever. I find the dishonesty objectionable. I think your post is a more prevailing opinion but a lot of lefties are uncomfortable with openly saying it in mixed company. However, your sentiment is why I'm not overly hopeful in convincing the more lefty LGF that the protests are bad thing. The communists, marxists and anarchists aren't a bug, they're a feature.
I want no part of it but I can understand that many aren't troubled by the more radical elements of the protests.

And I'm totally cool with you feeling that way. Clearly, we have a difference of opinion, but that's OK.

As for here, from personal experience being on the other side of things in other cases, I understand what it's like being what seems to be a minority view that's under attack and is being dismissed and trying to defend myself from what feels like all directions. So I can't totally blame you for some of your reactions.

I still won't deny being put off some by your tone at times, but it sounds like that's just the way you are, so I'll have to factor that in (I have my own quirks, so I find it wise to try and understand/accept nuances in others, as well).

Hopefully, we can all, including myself, be a little more level headed about this in the future and minimize the sniping.

I wouldn't mind discussing it but that question was too loaded to be a reasonable starting place.

Just jumping in for a second here.

I've been observing all this for the past couple of days, but largely staying out of it because of all the rancor flying around. Yeah, I know scales flying is a tradition here, but it makes it difficult to really get a grip on things.

KT, I've been keeping some of the things you post, like the Wiki page on civil disobedience, the videos, etc. and some of it has been very useful & enlightening. Can you please post a Page covering everything minus the barbs? I'm not trying to pick a fight, but it's difficult to hear your message between the way you've been presenting things and the reactions to them, and I really do want to understand everything you're saying because I think it could be helpful.

Anyway, it's just a request. Keep in mind that I wasn't here in the pre-Obama, pre-"Why I parted ways with the right" days, so I'm probably completely unaware of many past..."issues" that some of you may have had with each other.

That happens in NY as well.

When I first moved here from Philly, I went into a diner and asked for a cheesesteak. I've never, ever gotten a blanker look than I got from the guy behind the counter.

ROFL. That's not TexMex. That's some kind of freak version of what New Englanders think is TexMex.

I hear you.

The system is broken. Those of us who need the federal loans should be able to get them so long as we keep our gpa at the required minimum and maintain the acceptable number of units.

In order for me to get federal loans I actually have to get a useless AA degree in order to qualify for said loans, even though I already have a BA and am going back for a new career. It's totally absurd.

Honestly, I think there should be fewer loans and more grants. Loans are all well and good, but it's not exactly easy for most people to start to pay back $100k+ when you're fresh out of school.

I could make a page but I probably won't. For various personal reasons I really don't feel like attracting attention these days. I'm always open to honest questions. I realize that it seems confusing to a lot of people but I'm just applying the same standard to the Wall Street protests that I would to the Tea Party. If some radical idiot gives an interview and says stupid things I think it's noteworthy. If the organizers have questionable views or the participants are violent then I'll post it. It would be hypocritical of me to not apply the same standard to both groups.

re: #527 Obdicut

My experience is just an anecdote. I hope to gather something remotely approaching data this weekend.

Part of my Masters thesis involved going to a series of public events and interviewing members of a specific societal sub-group. I got over 100 interviews with a fairly intensive list of questions. I transcribed the responses, threw them into an Excel spreadsheet, cross referenced the data and analyzed everything for inclusion in the culminating document.

My only advice is that you should use a digital voice recorder. That's what worked for me. Too many people try to interview people on video, and it makes it harder for them to connect with the subject. Audio is less distracting all around, easier to edit and doesn't get between you and the person you're interviewing.

No, what Killgore is doing is nothing like McCarthyist red-baiting, and saying that it is is tiring hyperbole.

Killgore is pointing out, strenuously, that Marxists are present at the protests and that the organizers are, if not Marxists, at least quite sympathetic with Marxists. As well as the main organizer, Adbusters, having engaged in the antisemitic campaign.

That's a perfectly fair observation.

It's hard for some us newer people to think straight amid all the hissing and clawing, so we just hide in the nearest closet and wait for a lull in the battle when it seems relatively safe to come out, and then pick through the carnage for the useful bits.

That's just it. I have the GPA and am registered full-time. It's just that my financial advisor can't raise my cost of attendance any higher, since for some reason the university thinks that an MBA student is going to live in the dorms or something, given how low they have their numbers.

re: #566 Killgore Trout

I do think you're crediting them for being far more influential than the actually are. The modern left is the Democratic party, basically. These guys are on the fringe. They're good at social media, but the number of people they've got showing up to places is hardly immense.

This isn't the modern left. It has the potential to become it, but that's all it is, potential-- and it seems rather unlikely. The GOP got pulled down mainly by its Reagan-era pact with the religious right; that's a large part of what's fueling the turn to the right in the GOP.

The Democrats don't have anything like that, that I can see. These people are on the fringe of influence.

We'll see if we start seeing a similar primarying of Democrats in a serious manner because they're not ideologically pure enough, and whether the primaries are at all successful. That'd be, to me, the sign that the hard left had really gained significant influence in the modern left.

Overall, I think you have reasonable concerns over some of the groups that helped launch all this. What is less clear is how much control they will be able to maintain over them (Or even have now) should the whole thing continue to grow. On the whole, it, at least to my admittedly untrained eye, seems a bit more truly grassroots than the Tea Party stuff was, as least for now.

This is cool:

Cease-Fire for Harvests Offers Respite in Afghanistan.

Guerrilla war can have its own rhythms and take ever-shifting patterns and forms. The “pine-nut truce,” as it became known among soldiers who found an unexpected respite from the exhausting grind of daily contact, underscored a pair of simple facts: Waging war requires labor, and when local labor is busy with other work, fighting can subside. In sections of Paktika Province, the decline in violence was clear and steep.

It kind of drives home how much economic development would be able to solve the problems we're dealing with in Afganistan.

re: #578 Obdicut

The GOP got pulled down mainly by its Reagan-era pact with the religious right; that's a large part of what's fueling the turn to the right in the GOP.

What also fueled it was a long-time grassroots effort in the GOP to turn the party sharply to the right from the bottom up. It started in the 60's and 70's, particularly with AM radio. By the time Reagan was in office the pieces were already in place.

At the same time, the Democrats were repeatedly failing on a national level because of the hippies and the lingering anger at the anti-war left from the Vietnam era. The Democratic party has been making a concerted and deliberate effort to shed the far left ever since. It's no accident that the two Democrats elected POTUS since Reagan are not far left ideologues.

For all the sturm und drang of the OWS protests, they will ultimately have less impact on the Democrats than the anti-Iraq War protests did. The DNC and the rest of the party leadership are not going to start courting the fringe protesters in the streets, no matter how many platitudes they might offer at understanding their frustration. The Dems have worked too hard to shed the hippie label since the 80's to let that go away so easily.

Instead, the retort is either silence or chime-ins of "well he was right about the tea party." So what, so was I, so were a lot of people.

Sure, you and many others were right about the tea party, along with KT.

So - how, exactly, does that mean KT is wrong now?

Everything OWS has seemed pretty standard and somewhat tame as these things go, I've been following along over at NLN and other places.

And for the record, apparently ANSWER organized the march.

From up where I'm staying there were probably about 100-ish marchers.

by posting pictures of people at the OWS sites who espouse unacceptable views, you prove only that it is possible to find people at the OWS demo sites that espouse unacceptable views

hmmm. Sounds like an eerily familiar refrain -

I keep saying, no one has claimed KT is "wrong" now.

But if I told you back then "the righty sites are saying obama is a monkey" you'd want to know which of the million righty sites I was talking about and would have no reason whatsoever to take my word for it.

I think he's gonna need to be a bit tougher if he wants a global revolution.

I highly recommend people read this article...
"We Are Creating a Tahrir Moment": Adbusters Editor Kalle Lasn on the Magazine's Role in Igniting the Occupy Wall Street Protests
A little background on the Situationist is helpful. I found this to be really interesting stuff. An I think I understand the modern left better than ever. It really brings a lot of stuff into focus.

What have you learnt?

re: #590 Obdicut

There are astroturf groups trying to promote the 'end-the-fed' point of view. It'd be sadly funny to see these protesters hoodwinked by probably the same guys that took some of the tea party dudes.

Apropos:

Apropos:

I wouldn't doubt it at all. I brought it up yesterday re: our Citizens United world - already there are cash-in sites running around yapping about "occupying" whatever.

People will fall for it, too, just as they did for ANSWER's bullshyt 10 years ago.

This looks like one such example to me [Link: occupyparty.org...]

Citizens United is yet another reason I don't trust some of the main sites that don't say who they are. (It's related to wanting specifics when KT claims some site said/did this or that, or some dozen Marxists are involved with this or that. Well, who says so? Prove the claim, or don't make it to begin with.)

re: #283 webevintage

Slowly moving forward against a police line (or against being caged) is considered attacking the police? A beat down is not an appropriate response. How's about the police respond by moving out of the way and letting democracy take place? So what if the crowd advances?

(and I am actually asking questions since I'm not paying near enough attention to this, but cop using Batons always seems wrong unless they are in real danger.)

If the police put a line up, it means don't cross. It means force will be used to stop you crossing.

The police, and society, dare not generate the impression that threats of force are empty. That gets people killed, on both sides of the thin blue line. Clarity is essential.

sorry, I saw its asked and answered :) in the center of the flag is a douglas fir silhouette. apparently doug firs were endemic to the NW before being transplanted all over. I never understood the Cascadia movement.
