Tech Note: The Never-Ending Quest for a Faster Loading Page

Squeezing out milliseconds
Technology • Views: 25,865

In the never-ending search for a faster loading web page, I’m pleased to announce that more than 440K has been trimmed out of LGF’s front page today, and loading that bad boy should be much snappier now.

I discovered that the Google +1 buttons on the front page were loading about 44K of Javascript for each instance — and if there are 10 posts on the front page, that’s a whopping 440K+ of Javascript total.

I’m using the AddThis service to generate those buttons; there may be a way to avoid the ridiculous overhead by using Google +1 directly. But for now I’ve disabled those buttons on the front page. They’re still available on individual articles, and on LGF Pages (where only one 44K instance loads).

At the same time I’m trying out a new asynchronous method for loading LGF’s Javascript code, and I’m now concatenating all the Javascript we use into one big file to avoid multiple file accesses; if you witness any odd behavior, let me know in this thread. I’ve already discovered that the Opera browser gets very unhappy with this technique (crashes, in fact), so it’s disabled in Opera.

I was wondering why Opera was angry with LGF this morning, and this would explain what was going on. Things seem to be loading more smoothly and without the browser crashing. Much appreciated.

Anonymous takes down NYSE.com - for a minute

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Anonymous' call for a massive attack on the New York Stock Exchange's website was met Monday -- but very, very briefly.

A group calling itself Anonymous, a name used by disparate groups of online "hactivists," threatened to take down NYSE.com at 3:30 p.m. ET today as an extension of the "Occupy Wall Street" demonstrations that have continued into a fourth week.

...Rich Adamonis, a spokesman from the NYSE, confirmed that trading was not impacted.

Went to the Mall in DC today. Construction has the entire area in a knot; so I didn't go looking for the protesters.

What I did see?

WWII Memorial. Pictures do not do it justice. It is fantastic and gigantic.

Korean War Memorial. Haunting and moving. (My FIL was a total bad-ass war hero there).

MLK Memorial. Brave. Effective.

There's a wall there with several things that he said. This was my favorite.

They just have no clue about versioning and updates...You would think when you update Java that it would be backward compatible but if your program needs a certain version it breaks...Now that Oracle owns it maybe they can fix it...Heck Even Microsoft figured out versioning issues...Remember back in the day if you had a 16 bit program you could still run it on a 32 bit machine because they developed 16 to 32 bit Chunking DLL's in windowssystem directory.. Java has issues with the API's that may beyond fixing any more..

Al Qaeda complains that the US broke the law

Al Qaeda’s Yemeni wing charged the U.S. violated its own Constitution and laws in the targeted killing of Anwar al-Awlaki, according to a statement on Monday confirming the American-born cleric is dead.

Like presidential candidate Ron Paul and others who have condemned the killing as an unconstitutional, Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula used a legal argument to attack the drone assassination of the cleric and another American citizen, Samir Khan, who produced the Al Qaeda web magazine Inspire.

“The Americans killed the scholar Shaykh Anwar al-Awlaki and Samir Khan, but they did not prove any crime they committed and they never presented any proof against them from their laws of unjust freedom,” AQAP wrote according to a translation of the statement by Flashpoint Partners. “So, where is the freedom, justice, human rights and respect of freedoms they boast of? Did America become so suffocated that it contradicted — and everyday it contradicts — these principles it claims it established its country on?”

Declare war against a sovereign nation = get treated like an enemy of a sovereign nation. Don't want to ended up targeted as a terrorist leader? Don't become a terrorist leader.

Yes, but I'm now using the async attribute of the script tag, because the major browsers all support it (finally). Keeping dependencies straight is not easy to do with those loaders, and it becomes too much trouble to maintain when you change something.

Right now, there's just one big concatenated Javascript file with everything in it, loading asynchronously.

re: #36 windsagio

There difference between assassination and targeted killing.

It is essential not to allow loaded rhetoric to obscure the propriety of lawfully using deadly force in self-defense. When people call a targeted killing an "assassination," they are attempting to preclude debate on the merits of the action. Assassination is widely defined as murder, and is for that reason prohibited in the United States by executive order. U.S. officials may not kill people merely because their policies are seen as detrimental to our interests, and properly so. But killings in self-defense are no more "assassinations" in international affairs than they are murders when undertaken by our police forces against domestic killers. Targeted killings in self-defense have been authoritatively determined by the federal government to fall outside the assassination prohibition.

Did James O'Keefe violate his probation by going to OWS?

A thought occurred to us when we saw reports this afternoon that conservative filmmaker James O'Keefe visited the Occupy Wall Street protest in New York City on Monday: isn't that dude still on probation?

So we looked into it, and according to court records, a judge never approved his trip across the Hudson River and out of the state of New Jersey, where he lives with his parents. A judge has regularly approved all of his trips since he pleaded guilty to entering U.S. property under false pretenses back in May 2010 and received three years probation.

Ryan Girdusky, a spokesman for O'Keefe told TPM that O'Keefe got permission to make the trip from his probation officer. O'Keefe's lawyer did not immediately respond to a call and an email, and O'Keefe didn't immediately reply to a tweet asking for clarification. We'll update if we hear back.

Group Opposing CA's Gay History Law Accused Of Tricking People With Anti-Sexual Predator Petition

A group petitioning against California's law to promote history of prominent gays and lesbians is being accused of tricking people into signing their petition by presenting it as an effort to crack down on child molesters and murderers.

The Courage Campaign in California filed a complaint with the state Attorney General, District Attorney, and the Oceanside City Attorney on Monday on behalf of Max Disposti, who alleges that he witnessed petitioners for Stop SB 48 using anti-child molester posters to draw people into signing the petition.

Stop SB 48 is campaigning for a ballot measure to overturn the state's FAIR Education Act, which requires classrooms in California to include lessons about the historical contributions of a number of minorities, including gays and lesbians. According to the group, the law both "promotes the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender lifestyles" and "forces children to study materials that tell them their families' values are wrong."

Rick Jacobs, the chair and founder of the Courage Campaign, told TPM that his group has written to Stop SB 48 twice "because we have heard of instances of people who are gathering signatures actually lying," but they haven't responded.

Children of gay parents, of course, SHOULD be taught that their families' values are wrong, and will not be harmed by this in any way.

During his second round at the throne, Vlad III made a name for himself with his brutality. He would be given the moniker Vlad Tepes, or Vlad the Impaler due to his habit of impaling his enemies on long stakes, hoisting them up, and leaving them to die. It's said that he once left a virtual forest of impaled victims in a field to ward off invading Ottomans. And, apparently he once nailed the turbans of disrespectful Ottomans to their heads.

The Tarek Mehanna Support Committee came to Occupy Boston’s ever-evolving tent city on the Rose Kennedy Greenway to say Mehanna, a Muslim American pharmacist, is a victim of anti-Muslim sentiment.

I asked my teabagger dad if he supported Perry...he watches Fox exclusively...and he said he doesn't much care for him. I said, "What about Romney?" and he said, "No! I do kind of like that black guy...Cain...though my choice isn't actually running." (that would be Palin...I can't believe he referred to Cain as "that black guy"...tells you how much the opinions of teabaggers can be controlled by the media.) My dad's not an unsmart person, and he's never been outwardly or even privately racist - he's just getting old and slow and it took a minute to connect a name to a face. Still, I was glad it was just us talking, and not a more public venue.

They like Bachmann when she was in the spotlight, then she self-imploded. Then they like Romney, when he was sent to the spotlight to replace Bachmann. They he imploded. Now the MSM is promoting Cain, so they like him. It's like a script --all planned out and the audience claps and laughs on cue.

Well, I'm in a mood to set myself up for the bottom ten today.

I've watched the OccupyAtlanta video clip a few times, mostly because I can't help but laugh hysterically at this group of probably mostly lefties, many of whom probably at one time or another have complained about "right-wing echo chambers", sitting around and repeating every single word that's said by the speaker.

I swear, when I watch that video, that's the only thing I can get my head around.

It does look pretty strange the first time you see them doing it, but there's actually a reason for it. The crowd becomes a "human microphone," amplifying the speaker's words. And the reason they do it this way is because cities like NY have ordinances against amplified voices -- the "human microphone" lets them get around this law.

Lubbock is now ranked 6th in the nation. No, not in football or new jobs, but on Forbes list of America's most dangerous cities.

(Police chief Roger) Ellis said Lubbock’s relatively high number of aggravated assaults likely put the Hub City on the Forbes list.

In 2010, Lubbock police reported 1,572 aggravated assaults, or about 685 per 100,000 people, while the estimated rate of aggravated assaults in the United States was 252.3 offenses per 100,000 inhabitants.

Ellis said he did not know why Lubbock has higher numbers for aggravated assaults than other communities.

“Aggravated assault is assault with a weapon,” he said. “It could be anything from an ink pen to a knife to a pistol. A beer bottle, I think, is another good example.”

Many aggravated assaults occur as domestic violence, Ellis said, while a good number come in from bar fights and other squabbles. In most cases, he said, the victim and the attacker know each other.

Ellis can't just say "it's the amazing number of drunk assholes we have here," but that would be the truth. Texas Tech's notoriously violent fans don't live in a vacuum.

Today is a wind-down day for me. Yesterday was very very strange.

I went to a yoga class, and when it was over, I saw I had 15 phone calls from my daughter during the hour that class was held. That's A LOT.

So I call, and she is out of her mind hysterical.

In a 5-minute period of time that he was out of his crate and unsupervised, her new puppy ate her roommates leather recliner chair. Really. He did. Beyond repair. Leather & stuffing everywhere.

I did manage to find the exact same chair at the store where this one was originally purchased, and I bought it and it will replace the ruined one. But, OMG - the drama! The tears! The hysterics! What am I gonna do with the dog? Do I have to return him? Oh noooooooo.

So we've also scheduled training for the dog. And daughter now knows the dog must never ever be left out his crate unsupervised. Which I had told her. But did anybody pay any attention to me? Oh, noooo.

His passionate speech, which even included a reference to Karl Marx, made a startling comparison between what happened in Egypt earlier this year and what is now happening in the United States.

I googled him earlier and didn;t find any definitive proof he's a Marxist, but he was a desciple of some famous radical lefty academic (maybe howard Zinn)

Howard Zinn was at BU, this guy is at Georgetown. I'm not seeing anything on who he has or is studying with. Got more info?

There were some wingut articles about his speech but I didn;t bother to check them out.

I haven't found much on him at all. [ "Egyptian Marxist" "Mohammed Ezzeldin" ] brings up only wingnut articles.

I got the question of the century --

My kid, who is in Catholic HS, is writing a paper on the sacred places of Islam. He said he is confused because there are sacred Mosques in Jerusalem. Why are there Muslims in Jerusalem? He asks.

I told him no one understands the situation. All 3 religions claim Jerusalem to be a holy place and they don't seem to be very good at sharing. I added, that that books have been written on it and it would have to be a subject for a different paper or actually a thesis.

How do you answer such a question in three sentences or less (HS boys attention span).

Stating the obvious...

[Link: www.nytimes.com...]

Krugman: "The way to understand all of this is to realize that it’s part of a broader syndrome, in which wealthy Americans who benefit hugely from a system rigged in their favor react with hysteria to anyone who points out just how rigged the system is.

Last year, you may recall, a number of financial-industry barons went wild over very mild criticism from President Obama. They denounced Mr. Obama as being almost a socialist for endorsing the so-called Volcker rule, which would simply prohibit banks backed by federal guarantees from engaging in risky speculation. And as for their reaction to proposals to close a loophole that lets some of them pay remarkably low taxes — well, Stephen Schwarzman, chairman of the Blackstone Group, compared it to Hitler’s invasion of Poland."

So the question is, do demonstrations that include actual communists make these conservative critics look ridiculous for saying the Volcker rule is socialism, or do they make the people just looking for better regulation of the financial industry look like they're allied with radical anti-capitalists?

Conservatives launch “We are the 53 percent” to criticize 99 percenters

Conservative activists have created a Tumblr called “We are the 53 percent” that’s meant to be a counterpunch to the viral “We are the 99 percent” site that’s become a prominent symbol for the Occupy Wall Street movement. The Tumblr is supposed to represent the 53 percent of Americans who pay federal income taxes, and its assumption is that the Wall Street protesters are part of the 46 percent of the country who don’t.
...
there is some tension between the site’s critique and conservative tax policy. Part of the reason that over 40 percent of Americans don’t pay taxes is because of the continual push to lower them — a cause that conservatives have championed.

Oops.

To act violently against other people reveals disrespect for their Natural Right to be themselves. Love can never be destructive and physically attacking other people manifests the predator’s lack of self knowledge and inability to gain access to their inner core of archetypal spiritual Love. Violent people are not authentic and are ignorant. Violent people have not sought the Truth within themselves and discovered their spiritual linkage to all of Humanity. We are all the same and share equally in our Being.

Attacking other people because they disagree with you, is really destroying yourself and revealing your own inner poverty.

This is a good argument for not shoving the policeman when he tells you to get back on the sidewalk.

Household income fell more in recovery than in recession: study

Some recovery: Household income fell more after the official end of the recession than it did during the recession itself, according to a new report.

Between December 2007 and June 2009, median annual household income slumped 3.2% to $53,518, according to a report from two former Census Bureau officials.

From that point until June this year, incomes fell to $49,909 — a 6.7% decline, according to Gordon Green and John Code of Sentier Research.

It's scandalous that so many Americans don't pay taxes. The reason is that so many slackers and welfare cases fall into too low a tax bracket or otherwise connive to be exempt. They just spend the money on fatty snacks and cable TV anyway. Why should I pay taxes on my hard earned income just so a bunch of welfare cases can watch American Idol in glorious HD? We should raise taxes on the bottom 25%, and require everyone to pay at least some taxes.

These people are ruining our national economy by hoarding money that investors and entrepreneurs could put to good use in China and the Cayman Islands. What's that? You got a problem with the Cayman Islands? What are you? A liberal racist?

re: #385 OhCrapIHaveACrushOnSarahPalin

A lot of them believe critical thinking about anything is of the devil.

Eve and evil, and stuff.

From Pajamas Media:

I think Sarah Palin is indeed a Rorschach test for Conservatives...it’s about what Conservativsm MEANS....

The core idea behind Conservatism is that most of human learning is done not by rational theorizing, but by pattern recognition....

This pattern recognition is called common sense, and over generations, it’s called traditions, conventions etc. Religion is usually a carrier meme for these evolved patterns. It’s sort of an evolutionary process, like a genetic algorithm....

Liberals, Lefties and even many Libertarians want to use only 10% of the human knowledge that’s rational.....

Conservatives are practical people who instinctively recognize the importance of evolved patterns in human learning: because our rational knowledge simply isn’t enough yet, these common sense patterns are our second best option to use. And to use these patterns effectively you don’t particularly have to be very smart i.e. very rational. You have to be _wise_ and you have to have a good character: you have to set hubris and pride aside and be able to accept traditions you don’t fully understand....

Anti-Palin Conservatives don’t understand it. They think Conservativism is about having different theories than the Left, they don’t understand that it’s that theories and rational knowledge isn’t so important.

See if you can spot the word "Communist" in the whole lot of these signs. Looks like these might be mostly (ooga booga!!) TEACHERS!!

They're marching in the formation of a hammer & sickle.

One of the signs says something like "If America's system of capitalism is the best, why do we owe so much $$$ to the Communist Chinese?"

There are other examples.

Their actual gripe was against the Highlander Folk School

[Link: www.highlandercenter.org...]

Highlander was created in 1932 by Myles Horton and Don West in Grundy County, Tennessee. Theologian Reinhold Neibuhr wrote the first fundraising appeal for Highlander, and Lillian Johnson, a Tennessee educator and suffragist, donated her farm outside of the town of Monteagle where the founders established what was then known as the Highlander Folk School. Highlander's original mission, which has since been adapted and expanded, was to educate "rural and industrial leaders for a new social order."

Started out segregated by race. Was integrated by the 40s.

Hey now, I don't wanna buy a BMW! Maintenance costs on those things are a bitch!

(actually that's not true, I TOTALLY want one of these)

The first 50,000 miles are free....maintenance wise.

Fuckin' Cardinals are giving my new favorite team (Milwaukee Brewers - hey, I like beer) some grief tonight. Someone please tell them to stop.

My dad was over for Thanksgiving and tried to tell the Cardinals to cut it out, but they didn't listen so he went home.

From Pajamas Media:

I remember that article. I started my blog around the same time. I wonder what Ms. Rubin thinks of her lofty, yet un-elitist analysis, now.

You would think people would be embarrassed to embrace such crass anti-intellect, anti-rational positions in public, but guess not.

Dumb confederates...

So the question is, do demonstrations that include actual communists make these conservative critics look ridiculous for saying the Volcker rule is socialism, or do they make the people just looking for better regulation of the financial industry look like they're allied with radical anti-capitalists?

Saying the Volcker rule is socialism is simply a failure of reading skills. I wouldn't call it ridiculous because I don't know the cognitive or education level of the people saying that and wouldn't want to appear insensitive.

I think it can be simplified to "Many people in the area became Muslims at one point in history, and several empires ruled by Muslims controlled the area for several hundred years. And they built mosques."

Corporate Internships for college students are a bad thing?

Kind of. It's a clever way of getting, in some cases, a year's worth or so of free labor out of someone.

I tend to think they are scams more often than they are gateways to real jobs.

Which is not to say that their explanation doesn't border on the psychotic.
