Fox News ‘Clarifies’ Bogus Obama Apology Story

Caught pushing propaganda again
Media • Views: 27,026

As we noted a few days ago, the entire right wing media and blogosphere — all of them — fell for yet another fake outrage: the false claim that President Obama had offered to apologize to Japan for the bombing of Hiroshima in WWII.

Fox News, of course, quickly spread the bogus anti-Obama story far and wide before anyone could notice that it was a complete fraud, thereby ensuring that it would become a right wing article of faith, impervious to logic or facts.

When Mediaite’s Tommy Christopher contacted them about their deceptive coverage, Fox News decided to have dim bulb Steve Doocy “clarify” the issue.

Youtube Video

I hope no one’s holding their breath waiting for the rest of the right wing universe to own up to their part in circulating a completely false story.

I hope no one’s holding their breath waiting for the rest of the right wing universe to own up to their part in circulating a completely false story.

The more likely scenario: The wingnuts trashing Fox for "wanting to be part of the establishment" and "sucking up to the Lamestream Media and the Obama regime".

We'd like to clarify… We want to make sure this is very clear… What we reported having happened actually never happened… Shoulda been clearer about this… and we're sorry for any confusion

I don't even know what to call this without using scare quotes.

3 HappyWarrior  Fri, Oct 14, 2011 10:37:53am

We'd like to clarify that we're just pitiful journalists which is saying something because there's a lot of pitiful journalists out there.

4 Kronocide  Fri, Oct 14, 2011 10:38:14am

We did nothing wrong but we're sorry.

5 kirkspencer  Fri, Oct 14, 2011 10:40:05am

What, no "We're sorry you feel that way" apologies?

We lie with impunity. Shoulda been more clear about that.

Page it-- the solution to OT.

On topic, I'm confused by Fox apologizing, no matter how lame, given that they run stories this factually inaccurate all the time.

That's an iteration of 'we're sorry if we caused offense.'

So if nobody is offended, we're not sorry.

More mealy mouthed rhetorical feign fu from the Real Lamestream Media.

How about debate on Matt Taibbi's excellent advice to OWS?

I think you can actually run candidates on something like that--create legislation--and appeal to a broad range of people. What remains to be seen is whether this wave of protests can morph into something like that.

FLASH: Obama, in letter to Congress, authorizes deployment of small # of U.S. combat forces to central Africa to assist fight against LRA

[Link: talkingpointsmemo.com...]

Two days ago, the U.S. deployed combat troops to central Africa to serve as advisers to regional forces battling the Lord's Resistance Army. News of the deployment came a few minutes ago in a letter dated today from President Obama to John Boehner (R-OH), speaker of the House, and Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-HI), president pro tempore of the Senate. The letter was released publicly by the White House.

A total of 100 combat-equipped troops will eventually be deployed, with the rest being dispatched in the coming days, according to the letter. "However, although the U.S. forces are combat-equipped, they will only be providing information, advice, and assistance to partner nation forces, and they will not themselves engage LRA forces unless necessary for self-defense," Obama writes.

We'll have more on this surprise move and what exactly the LRA is shortly.

That's what I always liked about Taibbi's writing: Even though he is clearly agitating, he always stays focused on the actual details of the issues he is reporting on and he always stays as pragmatic as possible in his approach. I don't think he has all the answers, but having at least some is more than most other people who usually just whine.

Herman Cain mocks "Princess Nancy", Democrats for not wanting to lay off teachers

CAIN: You heard about the $26 billion bailout of teeeeachers. Didn’t want to lay off teeeeachers. Here’s what I want to share with you in this segment tonight. It’s called, “beneath the $26 billion bailout.” [...]

What I want to do this segment is peel back the onion on the $26 billion bailout that they rushed back to Congress in an emergency session called by “Princess Nancy!” “This is an absolute national congressional emergency!” They rushed back to pass this $26 billion emergency jobs bill. It was a $26 billion spending bill.

Yes Herman. The government spends money, to keep people working and to provide essential services. So good of you to notice.

My favorite recent story was Paula Dean's comment that Mrs. Obama ate more than her usual guests.

Her usual guests are Hollywood actors and actresses, aren't they? Hollywood people live on air and an occasional leaf, so that's not too hard.

I will admit I have never watched this show.

Anyway, wake me up when Michelle actually gets fat. The woman has made it to nearly fifty, given birth to two children, and is svelte as a svelte feline thing I won't be specific about, because if I say 'panther', the wingnuts will panic in unison.

I think we are totally messed up about food.

Our natural, evolution-produced impulses are attuned to a time when food was hard to come by, especially fat and sugar, and yet the modern ideal silhouette is one of a woman who eats lettuce all day and works out three-four hours a day.

Not a healthy contradiction, and so we have endless media stories about healthy eating and food, yet we are stuffing down the ho-ho's behind the pantry door.

Except she also made the remark about eating more than any of her other guests. If it hadn't been for that I'd have agreed it was the tabloids, not Paula.

Heck, I keep wondering if the part they cut out included "bless her heart."

(You have to be familiar with southern culture to get that. It's code that always means the comment is an insult. As in, "She can't help that her daddy's poor, bless her heart.")

My mind was blown about ten years ago, by a letter to Ann Landers or one of them, by a thirteen year old girl whose father was, I'm not kidding, threatening to make her give up being on the soccer team if she didn't lose weight.

There's a scene in one of Diana Gabaldon's books, where the time-travelling heroine has introduced potatoes early to eighteenth-century Scotland. They've grown them, but people are a little nervous about eating them, so her husband, the laird of the estate, digs in.

The heroine is standing with the women, who are really dubious. The men are eating them, 'but men would eat horse droppings if you put enough butter on them'. OTOH, the laird has just eaten five, and they don't seem to be affecting him badly.

Nit-picking. She's cooking with long sleeves. Not just long, but long and loose enough to look like she would have to worry about her sleeves getting into stuff...melted butter, batter, open flame, you know...stuff.
