Rush Limbaugh, Defender of the Lord’s Resistance Army

Disgusting does not begin to describe it.
LGF • Views: 45,773

In the October 14th episode of his radio show, Rush Limbaugh defended the Ugandan terrorist group calling itself the Lord’s Resistance Army, portraying the LRA as Christians targeted by President Obama for being Christian, and defending the agitprop of the LRA by reading it as gospel.

Only at the very last minute did Limbaugh admit to not really knowing jack about the LRA — but that’s all it takes to become an embedded wingnut meme.

Before I quote the transcript, let me illustrate the monstrosities Rush Limbaugh is defending in order to score political points against President Obama, by portraying the LRA as Christian freedom fighters:

LRA victim Ugandan John Ochola, 25, responds by telling his story. He was abducted by rebels from his village, Namkora in northern Uganda, which was attacked in February 2002. During the attack 50 people were axed to death and he was one of 35 abductees.

Taken from BBC News | Africa | LRA victim: ‘I cannot forget and forgive’ (h/t Gus 802)

Here’s the transcript from Rush Limbaugh’s show. Note that the headline remains posted on the website (!) (emphasis in the transcript is mine):

Obama Invades Uganda, Targets Christians

[…]

So nothing to worry about here, folks, only gonna be for a few months. Now, up until today, most Americans have never heard of the combat Lord’s Resistance Army. And here we are at war with them. Have you ever heard of Lord’s Resistance Army, Dawn? How about you, Brian? Snerdley, have you? You never heard of Lord’s Resistance Army? Well, proves my contention, most Americans have never heard of it, and here we are at war with them. Lord’s Resistance Army are Christians. It means God. I was only kidding. Lord’s Resistance Army are Christians. They are fighting the Muslims in Sudan. And Obama has sent troops, United States troops to remove them from the battlefield, which means kill them. That’s what the lingo means, “to help regional forces remove from the battlefield,” meaning capture or kill.

So that’s a new war, a hundred troops to wipe out Christians in Sudan, Uganda, and — (interruption) no, I’m not kidding. Jacob Tapper just reported it. Now, are we gonna help the Egyptians wipe out the Christians? Wouldn’t you say that we are? I mean the Coptic Christians are being wiped out, but it wasn’t just Obama that supported that. The conservative intelligentsia thought it was an outbreak of democracy. Now they’ve done a 180 on that, but they forgot that they supported it in the first place. Now they’re criticizing it.

Lord’s Resistance Army objectives. I have them here. “To remove dictatorship and stop the oppression of our people.” Now, again Lord’s Resistance Army is who Obama sent troops to help nations wipe out. The objectives of the Lord’s Resistance Army, what they’re trying to accomplish with their military action in these countries is the following: “To remove dictatorship and stop the oppression of our people; to fight for the immediate restoration of the competitive multiparty democracy in Uganda; to see an end to gross violation of human rights and dignity of Ugandans; to ensure the restoration of peace and security in Uganda, to ensure unity, sovereignty, and economic prosperity beneficial to all Ugandans, and to bring to an end the repressive policy of deliberate marginalization of groups of people who may not agree with the LRA ideology.” Those are the objectives of the group that we are fighting, or who are being fought and we are joining in the effort to remove them from the battlefield.

[…]

RUSH: — no question. How do you feel about the news? I want to go back, your extensive military background, how do you react to the news that Obama has dispatched a hundred soldiers to fight radical Christians in Africa?

CALLER: That’s amazing. I can’t believe he’s doing that.

RUSH: You can’t?

[…]

RUSH: On sending the soldiers to fight the Christians in Africa, here is how Obama ends his letter to John Boehner justifying sending troops to Uganda: “I have directed this deployment, which is in the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States, pursuant to my constitutional authority to conduct US foreign relations and as commander-in-chief and chief executive.” Would somebody explain to me what you think our “national security interests” are in Uganda. Now, keep in mind, folks, this is the same Barack Obama who said that we had no national security interests in attacking Iraq. After they were shooting at our planes and trying to kill our president and Allah knows what else, Obama said, “We got no national security interests in Iraq! They don’t threaten us! What are we doing?” We’ve got 500 to a thousand soldiers in the Lord’s Resistance Army and Uganda trying to wipe them out, and we’re sending a hundred soldiers to help them.

Vital national interests are at stake, according to Obama.

[…]

Is that right? The Lord’s Resistance Army is being accused of really bad stuff? Child kidnapping, torture, murder, that kind of stuff? Well, we just found out about this today. We’re gonna do, of course, our due diligence research on it. But nevertheless we got a hundred troops being sent over there to fight these guys — and they claim to be Christians.

Interesting contradiction. Rush just said they were a Christian group fighting against Muslims, and read a statement that explains their existence, which we would support. Wonder what the real truth is?

Obama spent $27Million of our tax dollars to help Kenya rewrite its national constitution. No surprise then that the eligibility requirement for the Kenyan presidency was altered so BHO2 is now eligible. He has his bolt hole all ready and waiting!

The Lord’s Resistence Army is Christian, though their tactics are hardly those of saints. Per Wikipedia:

“In January 1987, Joseph Kony made his first appearance as a spirit medium, one of many who emerged after the initial success of the Holy Spirit Movement of Alice Auma. Former Uganda People’s Democratic Army commander Odong Latek convinced Kony to adopt conventional guerrilla warfare tactics, primarily surprise attacks on civilian targets, such as villages. The LRA also occasionally carried out large-scale attacks to underline the inability of the government to protect the populace. Until 1991 the LRA raided the populace for supplies, which were carried away by villagers who were abducted for short periods…”

They are supposedly known to be brutal and use child soldiers. So, does that mean they’re different from the opposition who are every bit as brutal and use child soldiers?
Why in Hell are we always supporting Muslims and opposing Christians fighting for their very existance?

Not to Godwin things too soon, but what's scary is realizing that a lot of these people probably would have wanted the U.S. to support the "not really Christian, but we can pretend they are" Nazis against the atheist commies (And nasty Jews and homos and gypsies and...) in WWII.

21 SanFranciscoZionist  Fri, Oct 14, 2011 4:49:12pm

I'd like to add, just for the added value, that when I hunted Google on Lord's Resistance Army Islamic--just following a hunch, I got this. As you can see, several sites with an anti-Islam slant here denounce the LRA as not only not legitimate Christians (I'll sign on to that!) but as a group funded by Islamists in Sudan.

I find this interesting, simply because it reflects the one-theory-fits all clash-of-cultures concept that has gained credence in the wingnut world, and is slowly creeping toward center. Despite the groundwork having been laid to ID the LRA as somehow an Islamist group, the wingnuts have had to abandon that one, since if they were Islamists, it would perforce be good that Obama was lending the government a hand going after them.

Consequently, and with a flick of Rush Limbaugh's wrist, they have become Christian freedom fighters.

God be good to us all, the world is a couple bubbles off plumb these days.

We don't hear much about it nowadays, but there were anti-war folks back before and during WWII. Most were riding the "isolationist" bandwagon, arguing that Europe/Asia's affairs are none of our business, even if the rumors of millions of Jews being housed in concentration camps were true.

Yeah, major attacks on Americans tend to blow isolationist tendencies out of the water. A friend of mine's dad who had influence diddled with his military career and made sure he stayed out of Vietnam. He had no clue about it until his dad told him years later. The sad part was it fucked up his career; he honestly wanted to go far, but as someone who hadn't done jack during the war he didn't have a chance for any real commands.

Inhofe is pretty happy about this move by Obama:

INHOFE: U.S. TAKES MAJOR STEP TO END LRA'S REIGN OF TERROR

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After years of prodding by Congress that included passing multiple pieces of legislation, the United States Government today took a major step towards ending Joseph Kony’s reign of terror on the continent of Africa. U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), the driving force behind the legislative efforts against Kony and his Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), reacted to the announcement that the U.S. will deploy a small number of military advisors to Uganda to assist the Ugandan military and regional forces to pursue the LRA in the Central African Republic (CAR), the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and South Sudan.

“I applaud our nation’s military for making this a priority and taking the steps outlined in our legislation that will eventually protect the children and people from Joseph Kony’s reign of terror," said Inhofe. "I have witnessed firsthand the devastation caused by the LRA, and this will help end Kony’s heinous acts that have created a human rights crisis in Africa. We must work to bring justice to the children and victims in Uganda devastated by Kony and the LRA. I have been fervently involved in trying to prevent further abductions and murders of Ugandan children, and today’s action offers hope that the end of the LRA is in sight.”

Continues.

Good for Inhofe on this issue that he's been pursing over the years.

114 lawhawk  Fri, Oct 14, 2011 6:27:27pm

Some more background on the LRA, from the State Department:

The vicious and cult-like Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), which sought to overthrow the Ugandan Government, operated in northern Uganda from 1986 to 2006, where it killed tens of thousands of people, abducted thousands of children to serve as soldiers and slaves, and displaced approximately 1.8 million Ugandans. Human rights abuses committed by the LRA include murder, mutilation, abduction of young women for sexual servitude, and kidnapping of children to become rebel fighters.

In 2005, the Ugandan military pushed the LRA out of northern Uganda. The LRA escaped to and continued to operate in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (D.R.C.), as well as in Southern Sudan and the Central African Republic (C.A.R.). Under military pressure, the LRA rebels requested peace talks, which Government of Southern Sudan Vice President Riek Machar mediated and which after 2.5 years resulted in a Final Peace Agreement (FPA) in April 2008. However, LRA leader Joseph Kony ultimately refused to sign the FPA and continued to commit atrocities against local populations in D.R.C., Southern Sudan, and C.A.R. In December 2008, the Governments of Uganda, D.R.C., and Southern Sudan launched a joint military operation against the LRA in northeastern D.R.C. This operation is ongoing as of 2011 and extends across LRA-affected areas in D.R.C., C.A.R., and South Sudan.

There have been no LRA attacks in northern Uganda since August 2006. As a result, the vast majority of the 1.8 million former internally displaced persons (IDPs) have returned to or near their homes. Assistance from the Government of Uganda through its Peace, Recovery and Development Plan (PRDP) and from international donors has helped communities in northern Uganda rebuild and recover from the 20-year humanitarian catastrophe caused by the LRA.

Let's repeat - 20,000 killed and nearly 2 million displaced as a result of this group, which repeatedly uses child soldiers in the process of murder and mayhem. There have been years of diplomatic attempts to end the crisis as well , including those begun during the Bush years. The need to eliminate this group is paramount given all the damage they've done not only to Uganda, but neighboring countries.

This is who Rush is backing only because the President is sending advisers to help Uganda deal with this group.

A friend of mine is hosting 3 young boys found in a Ugandan military camp. From what she says, they were found shortly after they were kidnapped and were not there long enough to be mentally corrupted. Apparently they're great kids. I fixed up a secondhand laptop for them to use while they go to school.

Every small bit helps. Those boys will grow up to be good men because of your and your friend's actions. You show someone genuine kindness and it goes a long way.

Yeah, I know what you mean. In many parts of the world, a good day is simply surviving to the next one. I think this is why I respect immigrants so much. They're some of the hardest working people I know and don't seem to take anything for granted that many of us do.

I was thinking along similar lines...

Seems to me, Obama is trying to reset the world's perception that our military is "all bark and no bite", by using smaller, focused, action, as opposed to chicken-hawk strategery. At the same time, he's fixing one of China's little problems in Uganda, in order to get this trade deal done.
Compromise...

Oh, and Rush's fixation on O:
If he could, somehow find a way to inhabit the Prez's body, he would.
Obama is everything a fat little bastard wishes he could be.
I think Karl Rove said something to that effect. :)

Or we can go with the regular diagnosis, which is that he's so blinded by his hatred of all things Obama, that he didn't stop to actually do the research before launching into his condemnations.

I don't think he's blinded so much as Limbaugh places his desire to see Obama gone above all honesty and decency, He's not truly blind, but he doesn't care what happens to rural Ugandans as long as it wounds Barack Obama.

The last shreds of the right's patriotic fig-leaf finally fell off this week. First we saw Freepers repeating Iranian propaganda verbatim, and now the top GOP spokesdroid, Limbaugh, openly opposes military action against a savage terror gang. This shows once again that the right-wing will stop at nothing, literally at nothing, to get the black man out of the White House.

What's even worse is that Uganda is our ally, and gallant has been their fight in Mogadishu, clearing out Al-Shatabb. So in pursuit of domestic political points and ratings, Limbaugh proposes breaking faith with a loyal ally. That can only be described as stupidity verging on treason.

Yeah if he was elected president. He'd be over 80 by the end of his first term. Friend of mine though made a good point about Paul the other night. Paul was doing his usual the federal government is bad schtick and my friend pointed out that Ron first got elected to office in the 70's. re: #240 ggt

Ah, Houston, there seems to be a miscommunication.

I was referring to the myth of the Left and the Right.

How it all got started:

The terms "left" and "right" appeared during the French Revolution of 1789 when members of the National Assembly divided into supporters of the king to the president's right and supporters of the revolution to his left. One deputy, the Baron de Gauville explained, "We began to recognize each other: those who were loyal to religion and the king took up positions to the right of the chair so as to avoid the shouts, oaths, and indecencies that enjoyed free rein in the opposing camp". However the Right opposed the seating arrangement because they believed that deputies should support private or general interests but should not form factions or political parties. The contemporary press occasionally used the terms "left" and "right" to refer to the opposing sides.

I don't really see the things as the same. Using the debt ceiling was defensible as a political tactic, and further it was an attempt to rein in spending perceived as out of control by Republicans. It was an attempt to solve a real political problem.

Limbaugh's words, by contrast, are simply an attempt to capitalize on the ignorance of his audience in order to score political points and radio ratings. This is a much lower sort of goal, and in alienating a good and loyal ally would put the security of every American at risk.
Limbaugh was far worse than anything done in Congress.

How I loved Nat King Cole.

His singing career pretty much happened by accident.

Legend had it that Cole's singing career did not start until a drunken barroom patron demanded that he sing "Sweet Lorraine". In fact, Cole has gone on record saying that the fabricated story "sounded good, so I just let it ride." Cole frequently sang in between instrumental numbers. Noticing that people started to request more vocal numbers, he obliged. Yet the story of the insistent customer is not without some truth. There was a customer who requested a certain song one night, but it was a song that Cole did not know, so instead he sang "Sweet Lorraine". The trio was tipped 15 cents for the performance, a nickel apiece.

I don't really see the things as the same. Using the debt ceiling was defensible as a political tactic, and further it was an attempt to rein in spending perceived as out of control by Republicans. It was an attempt to solve a real political problem.

How come Republicans never complained about the debt when Bush got us into two wars, didn't pay for them and kept them off the official budget? It only became a political problem when a Democratic president put them on the books and tried to clean up the economic disaster caused by financial deregulation. Deny it all you want, there's a reason that no Canadian banks collapsed. There's such a thing as inconsistent hypocrisy so extreme that it is simply lying. You don't see things the same because you don't want to, simply out of tribalism. I'd like to see you attempt some internally consistent logic, to supply some evidence for your positions. Instead all I hear are rehashed talking points and raw, unsupported assertion.

Limbaugh was far worse than anything done in Congress.

Not really, the impact of the actions taken by the Republicans in the Senate is demonstrably far more damaging. The S&P didn't single out Rush Limbaugh as the reason for reformulating their economic forecast of US debt, they did however specifically cite the intransigence of congressional Republicans against raising taxes.

So you guys know I'm perhaps the pickiest eater in the world..
So after work I stop at this fancy joint to pick up an order of Chicken cordon bleu and put it in fridge and went out..So I come home and heat it up...
What is going on in America? Nobody can cook?
OK OK You don't take a chicken breast roll up some deli meat and stuff in inside the breast and cook it with Col. Sanders 11 Herbs and spices and call it Cordon Bleu..
Doesn't anyone remember? Chicken stuffed with a multitude of different cheeses to match the flavor of a lean meat like turkey..Melted and then lightly cooked in a heavy cream sauce and white wine...
I liked it then placed between French toast and eaten with homemade grape jelly..
Now that is Chicken Cordon Bleu!

And let's not forgot..FF came from the failed Netscape Browser as a last resort to live against Microsoft.. Cause they Sucked and Google came to the rescue in the Mozelle project

I was trying to wrap my head around how Inhofe has been so passionate about this issue. But then I realized how tied-into "the Family" Uganda's President is. Considering that Inhofe is a C-Street guy and part of this Dominionist movement and how involved they've been in transforming Africa into their form of Christianist Theocracy, I get it now.

Uganda is like Saudi Arabia fighting an al Qaeda insurgency and Inhofe is just protecting his favored theocracy against an uncontrollable LRA.

WaPo: Court claims some of Abramoff’s book profits

Disgraced ex-lobbyist Jack Abramoff might hope his upcoming book sells well, but he won’t see all of the profits from it. A federal court has garnished money earned from “Capitol Punishment: The Hard Truth About Washington Corruption From America’s Most Notorious Lobbyist” and will use it to pay back the author’s victims.

The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia issued an Oct. 11 order instructing Worldnetdaily Books, the Washington-based publisher of the upcoming tome, to turn over any money it owes Abramoff under the book contract or other agreements.

My best friend, who has been vegetarian for over 20 years now, did the vegan thing for a while. She was real passionate about animal rights for a long time and decided that vegan was the way to go. It lasted about six months, then the craving for real cheese pizza and real desserts got to be too much.

Ever had a Guinness or some other dark beer? Then you mostly know what it tastes like. Vegemite is made from the brewer's yeast extract that is a byproduct of making beer. You have to spread it VERY thinly on bread, otherwise the taste can be overwhelming.

A friend of mine from Sydney taught me her way of eating it. Spread a super thin layer on two slices of toast, add some apple slices, then top it with cheese, then pop it in the microwave just long enough for the cheese to melt. I like it. It's pretty good.

Fair to add, however, that Limbaugh was a cheerleader for the Tea Party Downgrade and arguably the biggest outspoken enemy of any sort of compromise between Democrats and the GOP during the debt ceiling debacle.

On the one hand, yes, but then you get those irritating exceptions (e.g. the Iranian revolutionaries of 1979 - about as far from "liberal" as you can get).

Who would be the "revolutionaries" and who would be the "conservatives" if you had a liberal, open, secular society with a subgroup agitating to turn it into a totalitarian theocracy?

That's why I think a more detailed axis is needed, though I'm not sure how best to define it (after all, the Stalinists were economically left but very "right" when it came to sexual freedom, individual liberties, etc)

391 TheSwedish  Sat, Oct 15, 2011 4:32:00pm

I'm a supporter of President Obama. I plan to phone bank and vote for him next year, as I did in '08, but I think this tilt with the LRA points to how messy POTUS's Africa policy has been, and in turn, this creates problems for those of us who backed President Obama while also pushing for the expansion of human rights around the world. I mean, we've weighed in in Uganda, but why not in Darfur? This hasn't been clearly explained, but if the administration made a clear case that an unstable Uganda threatens the new nation of South Sudan, I'd buy that. Still, the President has been a let down on Darfur despite surrounding himself with anti-genocide hawks like Samantha Power (who, of course, was key in urging a Libya intervention most Americans didn't want). So why are we doing this now? I know this isn't the first time we've gone after the vile LRA, but it seems Uganda's institutionalized homophobia is a greater threat to the people there than Kony's ragtag group. Where is America on Uganda's rampant gay-hatred? And what kind of blow to that would the capture or killing of Kony strike? A big one, I hope.

Look, I know inconsistency has been a mark of US foreign policy across just about every presidential administration since forever, but here's one more thing: a big reason Joseph Kony is such a bastard is that he delights in using children as soldiers. Those of us who pay attention to human rights issues were horrified when, in 2010, the Obama team lifted sanctions against four nations previously punished for using child soldiers: Yemen, Sudan, Chad, and the Congo. I really don't think the shameless can be "named and shamed," so after all this, the question returns: what the hell are we doing in Uganda?

392 Tiny Alien Kitties are Watching You  Sat, Oct 15, 2011 5:38:39pm

The last time the LRA came up I remember saying what a wonderful opportunity they were for a night-time Special forces live fire "training" mission. With night vision equipment and a bit of good intelligence the SEALs or the Rangers would wipe these people's leadership cadre off the map.

Armed thugs that massacre villages to steal their food and belongings while kidnapping the children to force them into service as "soldiers" in their "army." They have already lost the war in their own country and have fled it to now move on to terrorizing a neighboring one as nothing more than a gang of well armed pillagers.

They need to be stopped*, the sooner the better.

(*as in "stopped dead")

393 (I Stand By What I Said Whatever It Was)  Sun, Oct 16, 2011 1:35:14am

re: #390 publicityStunted

Sometimes you just have conservatives. The October and the Islamic revolutions can arguably be conceived as conservative reactions to the preceeding conservatives having had gone too far in their activities. But those revolutions were not in spirit connected to the French or American or even the 1848 ones. They were not essentially liberal. No matter how avant-garde they seemed, they were essentially reactionary throwback movements.
