Pajamas Media: OWS Twitter Hashtag is a ‘Neo-Swastika Power Symbol’

The smell of desperation
Wingnuts • Views: 33,367

We have a winner in today’s Sweepstakes of Wingnut Derp: our erstwhile friend Zombie, at our erstwhile employer Pajamas Media, pushing one of the most ridiculous (yet inadvertently hilarious) smears of Occupy Wall Street we’ve seen to date: The PJ Tatler Bizarre neo-swastika reminiscent of “The Great Dictator” used as power symbol by OWS leaders.

Don’t these people see an echo of the swastika in their new power symbol? Don’t they realize that the early Nazi Party was (among other things, obviously) also overtly anti-capitalist? (“Hitler began to make the [Nazi] party much more public, and he organised the party’s biggest meeting yet of two thousand people, for 24 February 1920 in the Staatliches Hofbruhaus in Mnchen. … It was in this speech that Hitler, for the first time, enunciated the twenty-five points of the German Worker’s Party’s manifesto… In general, the manifesto was anti-Semitic, anti-capitalist, anti-democratic, anti-Marxist, and anti-liberal.”) Don’t they know that the early Nazis tried to garner sympathy with street rallies and marches?

Here’s the bizarre and sinister “neo-swastika power symbol” that has Zombie all lathered up and ranting about Nazis:

Folks, it’s a Twitter hashtag.

And now, you’ll have to excuse me while I literally LMAO.

This will not escape the attention of Glenn Beck, an expert on such arcane symbology. Remember the young Barack Obama leading Mussolini's Chariot?

His defense of his "theory" in the comments section should be in the OP, too.

What's a "power symbol" anyway?

Hmmm... they would have had the same reaction if they used the percent sign. Or the @ (at sign) or anything else for that matter. Any sign that they OWS is trying to become more cohesive and organized is threatening to these folks.

The triple face palm is most appropriate.

Same reason why when they had a chance to intelligently oppose Obama, they chose to go with "He's a marxist muslim born in Kenya!"

Semiotics is a tricky bizniz. Certainly not for hot-headed ideologues.

15 Mostly sane, most of the time.  Mon, Oct 17, 2011 11:07:19am

Well, it has straight lines arranged in a vaguely-squarish shape.

This means that the dollar sign, the at sign and the percent sign are the same.

Don't get me started on the asterisk.

16 Gus  Mon, Oct 17, 2011 11:07:56am

It may “just” be a hashtag, but that doesn’t lessen its significance as a power symbol. -- Zombie

Seriously? How does this guy sleep at night? Is he afraid of his own shadow. Sure enough, OWS has only added to the wingnuts' mental problems. Kind of expected this to happen.

19 Ayeless in Ghazi  Mon, Oct 17, 2011 11:08:59am

Zombie is unfazed by the facts: HE KNOWS AN EVIL ROTATOR WHEN HE SEES ONE!

As a commenter notes, the symbol may have derived originally from the Twitter “hashtag,” but that in no way diminishes its creepiness. It may “just” be a rotated hashtag, but that doesn’t lessen its significance as a power symbol. The swastika, after all, was “just” a Buddhist good luck marking before the Nazis adopted it and started using it to indicate something else. And how did the Nazis alter it for their purposes? They rotated the Buddhist swastika 45 degrees, to give it a new association. Just as the hashtag sleeve marking has been rotated here.

20 theheat  Mon, Oct 17, 2011 11:09:28am
Those aren't swastikas! They're Navajo peace symbols!

This is too good not to share. Yes, it's another Hitler "Fallen" parody, but one of the best.

21 Kragar  Mon, Oct 17, 2011 11:10:01am

My favorite;

The Twitter hashtag was my first thought too. But that doesn’t take away from the sinister aspect of this whole movement. After all, the swastika itself used to be a Buddhist and Hindu religious symbol before the Nazis took it over.

Yeah, at first I totally thought of the logical answer too, but now that you've attached some diabolical bullshit significance, I'm totally on board with it.

By their logic, any symbol at '45 degrees' would count as a neo-nazi power symbol.

And yeah, as Sergey pointed out: The Great Dictator mocked Hitler. So if they're using symbology reminiscent of it, then aren't they mocking Hitler? If not, why not?

I'm not entirely sure what I'm responding to, except possibly, a culturally conditioned dim view of people wearing symbols on their sleeves, and the general cross-like shape of said symbol.

I followed the links over to Marco's site. The Hashtag is by far the least problematic aspect of the protest. From a political perspective the signs against fighting terrorism and wars is going to be trouble for Obama. I really don't see much chance he's going to benefit from this movement.

And notice how he only has two, count them, one, two, images of these hashtags.

Not 20. Not 30. Not 100. Just two people.

The interpretation of this pic looks suspect as well...

Image: 101511_0384.jpg

Neo-cannibals seemed to be everywhere. Above, a sign adorned with a skull with a red anarchist ‘A,’ and bloody knife and fork recall the peak of the psychedelic revolution in 1969, when Charles Manson and his crew of hippy chicks went on a murder spree and bragged about defiling the corpses of their wealthy victims with flatware. President Obama’s friends, infamous terrorists Bill Ayers and Bernadette Dohrn, shocked the world by publicly rejoicing and declaring the three-fingered fork sign as a new revolutionary symbol. This guy looks ready to chow down.

I sort of doubt the sign was made with Charles Manson in mind. Anyone recognize the 'n' and 'e' symbols? I've never seen them before.

It doesn't directly benefit the Establishments of either major party; I agree that it's not designed to. While Corporate Profits Are At 60-Year High, Main Street Businesses Continue To Struggle

Even as the economy struggles, corporate profits continue to rise. Wells Fargo, the largest consumer lender in America, announced today that its third-quarter earnings rose 21 percent, to $4.1 billion. Citigroup, the nation’s third-largest bank, also released its earnings statement today, announcing that its third-quarter earnings rose 73 percent over last year, with $3.8 billion in profits. Even though JP Morgan Chase saw its earnings fall from a year ago, it still raked in more than $3 billion in profits.

Corporate profits as a share of the nation’s gross domestic product, in fact, are at their highest point since 1950. Recent snapshots, however, tell a much different story on Main Street, where small businesses are limping through an economic recovery that treated corporations much more kindly. According to the National Federation of Independent Businesses’ September report, two out of every five small businesses reported that profits are falling:

Eat the rich? Depends on which rich.

Here in Texas, for example, the wealthy subsist largely on steak dinners and politician-schmoozing barbecue, lots of fat and marbling. The west coast rich, otoh, eat only tofu and arugula with maybe a sliver of roast duck once in a while. The result is little more than very watery gristle and a few delicate bones. The longest established herds, the Eastern Establishment, are well, if blandly, nourished but they pursue a strenuous routine rowing for the Crew as juveniles and later in chasing the almighty dollar. They are consequently very lean but rather sinewy and a little on the gamy side.

current GOP chairman of the House Armed Services Committee promises to hold up defense spending over social issues after pledging not to hold up defense spending over social issues.

When Republicans won the House majority in November 2010, Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon (R-CA) — the current chairman of the House Armed Services Committee — pledged to pass clean defense bills that were “not weighed down” by social issues. “Congress should pass clean legislation — without the liberal social agenda items Speaker (Nancy) Pelosi and (Senate Majority Leader) Harry Reid have insisted on attaching in the run-up to the election,” McKeon said, referring to amendments to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and enact hate crimes protections. He added: “The National Defense Authorization Act—especially in wartime—should be focused on one core equity: caring and providing for the men and women in uniform and their families.”

But McKeon is ready to break his promise. Following the repeal of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, the Department of Defense announced that it would allow chaplains to perform same-sex marriages on military bases. McKeon is threatening to derail the entire Defense Authorization Bill unless it includes an amendment outlawing the practice:

NYPD Officer Charged with Criminal Civil Rights Violation for False Arrest and Malicious Prosecution
Charges Include Attempted Violent Extortion and Attempted Insurance Fraud
U.S. Attorney’s Office
October 17, 2011
Eastern District of New York

A criminal complaint was unsealed this morning in federal court in Brooklyn charging New York City Police Department Officer Michael Daragjati, an eight-year veteran of the NYPD, with violating the civil rights of an African-American victim by willfully arresting him and charging him with a crime without probable cause and on false pretenses, and for doing so based on racial animus. Daragjati is also charged with attempting and conspiring to commit violent extortion and committing wire fraud by making false statements to an auto insurance company.* Daragjati was arrested this morning and has an initial appearance scheduled later this afternoon before United States Magistrate Judge Joan M. Azrack at the U.S. Courthouse, 225 Cadman Plaza East, Brooklyn, New York.

The charges were announced by Loretta E. Lynch, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York; Janice K. Fedarcyk, Assistant Director in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, New York Field Office; and Raymond W. Kelly, Commissioner, New York City Police Department.

The outcry against the nation’s financial institutions that has swept the country in recent weeks has crossed many boundaries, including class, gender and age. Obama talks about the Republican 'jobs plan:'

“Now, it turns out that the Republicans have a plan, too. I want to be fair. They call — they put forward this plan last week. They called it the ‘Real American Jobs Act.’ The ‘real one’ — that’s what they called it — just in case you were wondering.

“So let’s take a look at what the Republican American jobs act looks like. It turns out the Republican plan boils down to a few basic ideas: They want to gut regulations; they want to let Wall Street do whatever it wants. They want to drill more. And they want to repeal health care reform. That’s their jobs plan.”

He must really enjoy tweaking these numbskulls. I know I'm enjoying it.

re: #232 Gus 802

Much more info on that here.

Michael Daragjati, 32, told a friend he had "fried another n*****," after arresting a 31-year-old African-American man on Targee Street and Laurel Avenue on April 15, court papers said. Daragjati, an eight-year NYPD veteran falsely claimed the man had resisted arrest, said court papers.

In intercepted phone calls, Daragjati, who runs a construction and snow removal business, called Essential Renovations out of his home, told a friend he worried about getting caught for wrongdoing and being thrown off the police force. According to court documents, Daragjati was working in plain clothes in an unmarked car on April 15 for the NYPD's Staten Island anti-crime unit.

He and his longtime partner saw an African-American man walking on the street and ordered him to remove his hands from his pockets and raise them, said prosecutors. Daragjati allegedly pushed the unidentified man against a parked van and "roughly" frisked him, said court papers. No weapon or contraband was found.

The man complained about Daragjati's treatment and asked for his name and badge number. He continued to complain about his treatment as he was allowed to walk away and shouted insults at Daragjati, said prosecutors.

The cop and his partner crossed the street, approached the man, handcuffed and arrested him. The man did not resist, said prosecutors.

Daragjati then had several phone conversations with his sergeant to discuss possible charges. The cop told his boss that the man had "pushed off me," they had started "wrestling" and that it took four cops to subdue the suspect, said court papers. He also advised the sergeant he had grabbed the man by the neck and put his face on the trunk of the car.

Later, as the man was being processed at the 120th Precinct in St. George, Daragjati allegedly told him he could have gone home that night, but Daragjati didn't like being disrespected, said court records.

Daragjati later swore out a complaint report in which he falsely claimed the man resisted arrest by "flail[ing] his arms, kick[ing] his legs and push[ing] off from [Daragjati]," court papers allege.

The man was charged with resisting arrest, a misdemeanor, and disorderly conduct, a violation.

The UFT is allowing the protesters the ability to store some of their stuff (and is donating some stuff) from their offices in Lower Manhattan, which is near to Zuccotti Park.

BTW, I know that the media is making a deal out of the fact that the OWS has raised $300k for the month, but that seems like a rather paltry sum for something backed by George Soros (if you're buying into that tripe). And if you aren't buying into that - it's still a paltry sum given how widespread support for trying to get government and Wall Street to be more responsive.

I also think that the donations have increased since Brookfield Properties backed off trying to clean up the park.

I'm not so sure OWS will hurt Obama. It seems to have hit a button on the Right -- the crazy button. All of the energy the right spends trying to delegitimize OWS while using the same old, tired tactics, ie., librul, commie, marxist etc., while at the same time, focusing on restricting women's rights and gutting social safety nets, is going to rile up the Democratic base, who has varying degrees of sympathy to OWS. In other words, smearing the protesters may backfire on the right. Once again, they are in danger of over-playing their hand. He has to harness the energy of the base.
He really doesn't need to associate himself with the protesters per se. He just has to focus on jobs, inequality, and stagnation.

The overseas protests have been far larger - and in some cases, far more violent than the stuff here in the US. Some of that may be due to the fact that protests are a way of life in places like Greece and Italy given how precarious their economic systems are these days.

The overseas protests are a double-edged sword for OWS domestically. If the overseas protests get violent, that might lead US protests to see more crackdowns to deter the violence overseas or lead to some folks to distance themselves from the foreign protests, withhold from donating to a cause they would otherwise consider, etc.

They're both part of the Northwest Semitic language subfamily, but there's not descent relationship between them. If anything, they're both descendants of some early form of Ugaritic (the oldest accounted NW Semitic language), or all three derive from a hypothetical predecessor (like Proto-Indo-European vis-a-vis all the Indo-European languages).

re: #327 lawhawk

The overseas protests have been far larger - and in some cases, far more violent than the stuff here in the US. Some of that may be due to the fact that protests are a way of life in places like Greece and Italy given how precarious their economic systems are these days.

The overseas protests are a double-edged sword for OWS domestically. If the overseas protests get violent, that might lead US protests to see more crackdowns to deter the violence overseas or lead to some folks to distance themselves from the foreign protests, withhold from donating to a cause they would otherwise consider, etc.

Agreed, but I don't think there'll be a separation between the international and domestic OWS protests no matter what happens. I suspect the G20 protests will also take on an OWS theme this time, I don't think any of the supporters are going to be bothered by it.

Citigroup Earnings Rise 74% to $3.8 Billion

With a big push from a one-time accounting gain, Citigroup on Monday squeezed out its seventh consecutive quarterly profit, but it faces significant challenges to growth.

Citigroup announced a third-quarter profit of $3.8 billion, or $1.23 a share, beating analyst consensus estimates of 81 cents a share. That represented a 74 percent increase from a year ago, when the bank announced a quarterly profit of $2.2 billion, or 72 cents a share.

I think the foundations of both the Tea Party and OWS are flawed. The Tea Party was built on Paulian foundations because the organizing infrastructure was already in place. OWS seems built on the foundation of the Anti-war movement (with the addition on Anon). They may succeed in terms of larger rallies and maintaining a somewhat positive public image but I don't think they're going to actually accomplish anything. I get the feeling that maintaining an active protest movement is the main priority rather than actually accomplishing anything concrete. It depends on your definition of "winning".

Occupy Denver protester Matt Velasquez and a State Trooper he has known since first grade. "I wasn't afraid of him cause I knew he wouldn't hurt me. I told him I was glad he was here," he said. Velasquez was arrested during the operation. Joe Amon, The Denver Post

Part of the reason I've been very "meh" about OWS is because I know it was built on the framework of the 'protest at the drop of a hat reflex' of the left. Having a broad appealing message helped it but I don't know if they can maintain it.

Another thing, and I said this about the Tea Party from day 1... "Protests are for DFHs". This isn't a police state, and no one is, or needs to be, the "Tank Guy" from Tienanmen Square. We still have freedom of speech, can vote, and run for office. Focus energy on getting CONGRESS to do something or replace the tools in office with people who will. Camping out on Wall Street is going to do jack shit in the long run. There needs to be legislation and some leadership to push it through and keep it focused on the problem.

I just don't think this sort of action is appealing to people who like to hold up signs and camp in public places.

Their special fantasy about that was that Obama never gave the order to go ahead, the SEALS just did it without him.
Very revealing, the wingnut fantasies.

The RWNJ fanatics sure have a problem with cognitive dissonance and contradictions. On one hand, they portray President Obama as being weak (the fantasy about the military deciding to take out OBL on their own) and on the other, the fantasies that President Obama is somehow actively behind everything they oppose (OWS, etc.).

Well, it's not what I would do. I can't stand being around consensus decision-making.

Just the same, I'm glad it frustrates and enrages conservatives.

My problem with consensus decision-making is:

1. It usually leads to a result that is either coerced, or incoherent. Sometimes both.

2. When told "Lead, follow, or get out of the way," my instinctive answer has always been, "OK, I'll be over there if you need anything."

Have you ever gotten the sense they want to attract any moderates?

When?

I don't know who 'they' are, since apparently no one speaks for the collective, but yes, I get the impression that they'd really love for moderates, or at least people who look like moderates on TV, to show up.

The Tea Party stayed on it's 2008 anti-Wall Street/Bailout message for about 15 minutes before a rogues' gallery of kooks hijacked it and turned it into the Mos Eisley Cantina of political movements. It's too late for them, they are at the event horizon of the Wingularity.

OT1H, yes. OTOH, they're ruddering the Rs in Congress and have been since shortly after their inception. I've maintained from the very beginning, we won't see that with OWS.

There won't be OWS Democratic versions of Sharron Angle, Joe Miller, Christine O'Donnell, and the like. Certainly not in the coming election. That's one reason I think TP=OWS is a big MBF, and wishful thinking on the right that the left is every bit as unhinged and idiotic.

Hey, I'm not even saying the latter is untrue. But I see an awful lot of personal desires being projected onto OWS from the right.
