As someone who will owe tens of thousands in student loans when I graduate with my MBA in May, let me answer that for you-- Federal student loans are PERMANENT debt. Nothing gets rid of them, not even bankruptcy. It is literally impossible to default on them. There are also stiff penalties for paying them early. Figure that one out.

I have to say, I scratch my head over the OWS complaints about Student Loan debt. I can believe a person could have been duped into buying a house you can't afford, but how can you be duped into attending classes, taking tests, and writing papers for 4 years?
I'll take a stab at answering it. A college education has up to recently basically promised a well paying job for anyone but the most brain dead graduates. However, now, with tuition costs through the roof and people getting out of college and finding the best job available for them is working at a local grocery store. Then he's asked to pay back 20,000 or 30,000 in student loans while making $10 an hour.
There was an implied promise in a college education. and that's why people are angry, that promise is not being fulfilled, and yet, they're still expected to pay.
To use a car analogy, it's like getting your car fixed, only to find it won't drive out of the lot. And the mechanic still demands payment, even though the car isn't fixed.

I went to college (B.A. '84, M.S '88). My parents didn't pay once cent. I took as many classes as possible at a community college, and worked 25 hours a week while going to school.
Admittedly, prices didn't bubble then. I agree that college tuition prices are WAY out of hand. But there's a point where consumers need to vote with their feet.

Another issue with the college loans thing is that many students were referred to predatory lenders by their college's financial aid office, and thus had a very rude awakening when the school's "advice" bit them in the rear.

I borrowed a certain amount for the entire academic year. Even if a miracle happened and I didn't want or need loans for this spring, the money's already borrowed for the year.
Also, I knew that bankruptcy didn't erase my student loans and that they're going to follow me forever until they're paid, but the stiff penalties for paying them off early was a surprise in the fine print. Even if I end up with a high paying job and make sacrifices upfront to pay off my loans, I'll be paying extra in fees for paying them off early. It's insane.
Basically, federal student loans mean that you can't pay them early without penalties, and you can't have them forgiven even if your entire life falls apart and you file for bankruptcy. If anything, the OWS complaints about them make the most sense to me.

Thanks for the explanation. I'll read more about the early payment penalty. That sounds very odd.
And I'm very sympathetic to this. I'd much rather the Government pay to help people with student debt than, say, pay to "cram down" the amount someone owes on a house.
But, still, it's hard to believe that people graduate and are surprised by the amount they owe.
