I guess treating women with some class isn't all that important when you can just pay for the sex.

What I don't get about Rush and all the people like him is like like to pretend bygone days were a more genteel age that they pine for. And yet they seem like caricatures of frat-boys appearing on Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

It's disgraceful that prominent Republicans don't come out very clearly against Rush Limbaugh. I never listened to Limbaugh, so I don't know if a long time ago, he had something worthwhile to say. But whatever he may have been in the past, in recent years he's been just plain dim-witted and mean-spirited. Yet he apparently has a vast following. By not speaking out against him, Republican leaders are condoning ignorance, hate, and a childish approach to our nation's challenges.

Ahh scurrilous fat jokes at the first lady, a woman who is infinitely brighter, kinder and better than him in every way.

And that from a man whose individual but cheeks are bigger than most people's whole bottoms, and whose man boobs are larger than the woman in question's breasts.

He gets really upset if you make fat jokes about him.

Yes, that is why I enjoy pointing out his porcine physique.

More seriously, there is really nothing more insulting than attacking a man's wife to get at him. It is the lowest of the low and should not be tolerated. The whole right wing is guilty of this. Can't attack the man in office then attack his wife - a lady incidentally who is one of the more classy and decent first ladies we have had in a very long time. In a more graceful age, someone like Rush would simply be thrashed.

Perhaps, part of why they hate the first lady is that she is so very much smarter and simply better than they are in all ways that matter... Of course, she is also black and seeing a black woman be that much superior to them has got to hurt their "white pride" down to their shrivelled little man parts.

As an addendum,

In Rush's case those little man parts are not something he has been able to see in years. That must truly hurt his pride and it helps explain why his ego is so easily threatened and why he lashes out so much.

Obama getting tough on Pakistan.
Clinton sends clear message to Pakistan on militants

The meeting included Pakistani Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani, the powerful army chief, General Ashfaq Kayani, and Lieutenant-General Ahmed Shuja Pasha, who heads the Inter-services Intelligence (ISI) agency which U.S. officials have singled out for its alleged support of militant groups.
...
he presence of Petraeus at the talks was especially significant, said political analyst Hasan Askari Rizvi.

"America will produce evidence before the army chief, that you are involved (in supporting the violence in Afghanistan). With David Petraeus coming as well, they have definitely brought vidence," he said.

"He will provide evidence that you are involved, ISI is involved," he added. "But nothing will come out in public."

I think it's pretty evident that I have nothing but contempt for the hate peddlers like Limbaugh and the other cult demagogues.

However, I was watching CNN's execrable coverage of Gaddafi's death today, and they were showing photos of him as a young man, with his children, and so on. There was no sound and the captioning was fritzy, but I'm pretty sure the tone of the reporting wasn't trying to apologise for or humanise him especially. Nonetheless, I was reminded of this piece, and this thread reminds me of it again.

It reminds me, basically, that no matter how hateful someone is, how deserving they are of our contempt, there's also going to be people out there who know them and love them for other reasons. It's poignant to remember that, despicable as they may be, they're still human, and simultaneously sad to realise that their vileness is indeed part of the human condition that we all share.

By the way, since the topic of antisemitism has been on my mind, I'd like to encourage everyone to see this great movie:

[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

It's a movie that directly confronted the antisemitism in the US. One of the actors, John Garfield, took a supporting role during a time when he was an outright star because he felt the message was so important. It got him called on the carpet by the House Un-American Activities committee, and eventually blackballed for refusal to 'name names'. A reminder that support for the Jews used to get you investigated for being a commie, back in the day.

re: #98 Sergey Romanov

[Link: www.snopes.com...]

Read within the context of the full interview, it is a tiny bit more clear that Mrs. Bush's "beautiful mind" statement referred to her desire not to become mesmerized by the pre-war media speculation of what such an invasion would mean, what sorts of weaponry and defenses U.S. troops might well be walking into, which troops would be committed and when they'd be deployed, how long the war would last, and how high the body count might be. Prior to the commencement of hostilities, such matters were the subject of endless supposition by various news pundits. While maybe not "90 percent" of what was filling the air waves was guesswork rather than hard news, Mrs. Bush's point that news of that moment was much more about what could or might happen rather than what was happening was valid. Her comment was not meant as a dismissal of actual deaths or suffering (troops had not yet been engaged at the time of her remark), but of news coverage that amounted to one expert after another making predictions about what they saw as likely to occur.

40% of prominent Republicans agree with him, 40% are too afraid of his influence to contradict him, and 20% vehemently and vociferously oppose him but exist only in my imagination.

Man, I really think that is one of the major problems with the media today; they've turned from analysis of facts, analysis of real things in the real world, to endless orgies of speculation and bloviating about slippery slopes. "This could be bad for Obama. These regulations could lead to greater fear in the future." Instead of actually doing the hard thing of grappling with facts and painting their audiences an accurate picture, they speculate in inexpert ways on everything that comes their way.

Fine, pillory the shit out of her for the comment, but don't be surprised when decent people don't want to participate in politics because they don't want to put their families under that microscope. I love my wife and she's awesome, but she's got a temper and might easily blow up or say something hyperbolic or apparently callous. I never want to put her in a position where, despite having no real power, she gets treated as though she does.

Did she actually do any harm to anyone through that comment? I don't think so. She did a lot of good with the Leukemia society, the set up the Barbara Bush Foundation for Public Literacy and is still active in it, long after it would be any political advantage for her husband.

It's not storytelling, no. It's more farcical than that. In a story, the author takes an actual position, things happen, they move forwards.

The media is more like people holding up a book and commenting on its size, dimensions, colors, who published it, what the author is like in bed, the word count, how often black people are mentioned in it, without ever actually discussing the actual narrative or the contents.

Yes, why watch your child struggle with a decision that will have life or death consequences for thousands of families, instead better to pretend that he's the one hurting. It's all speculation after all, not like people are actually guaranteed to suffer real losses in war that make the stress of leadership look insignificant in comparison. 161 Obdicut  Thu, Oct 20, 2011 4:49:20pm

One of my biggest problems with local ordinances is that they often make it very, very hard to build buildings out of non-standard, sustainable, green materials. They don't tend to keep up with advancements in sustainable tech, and then you have to either go to a lot of monetary trouble to prove that the stuff you're using is safe or wait for them to catch up to the technology. It's a real problem for those who want to build responsibly; it's far easier just to use established but non-green tech.

Dunno, dunno. I guess I pictured a small greenhouse without much chance of failing anywhere (unlike, say, a house for living). Upon further thought, if it's a large structure that may just collapse on KT, there is a point there.

It's a pretty substantial project. 250 sq feet attached to the back of the house. Heavy 7 ft long double paned extra thick glass. Heavy duty aluminum frame, some steel supports.

168 Lord Baron Viscount Duke Earl Count Planckton  Thu, Oct 20, 2011 4:51:35pm

KT, just how large is the greenhouse gonna be?

Yeah... no. Eva Braun got what was coming to her.

I didn't read Renaissance_Man's comment as disputing that sort of thing - more like, "don't fall into the trap of thinking evil is an ultra-exotic, removed-from-normal-humanity thing." I agree with him if only because, seeing the shards of humanity in evil people makes it easier to deal with them effectively (either rehabilitating them if they're not too far gone, or exploiting their vulnerabilities to help do away with them once and for all).

re: #162 LudwigVanQuixote

Safety ordinances make sense as long as they're easy enough to follow and comply with. You don't want to let someone build a greenhouse and then maybe hire some guy to help him pot stuff and then get killed by the collapsing greenhouse. Inspecting structures for physical safety is legitimate. But if you're gonna do it, you need to do it well and have rules people can and will follow, that are actually accessible and understandable, otherwise you're just fucking up.

I had to be more than 6 feet from the structure of the house, yet 3 feet from the property lines, I had to have a structural, water, gas inspection.
They didn't like my water lines, and they had to be re-done.
If you just build one, with no permits, and anyone sees it or complains, the city can make you tear it down.

Would I be out of line saying I would go get help if Rush was choking on a chicken bone? I would walk a very long distance to get that help. I would make sure that the help I got was not gay. Nor a woman, or whore, like Rush likes his women to be called. Nor would the help be black or a Democrat. I would insist that the help not be immigrant help even if licensed to assist removal of said bone. The help would also have to be a fan, or Ditto Head who would be able to prove loyalty to Planet Rush. Might take a while. If I cannot get help, I'll call back. Shortly. Be right back.

I'm late commenting on the thread, but I'm having difficulty with my wording; too many thoughts trying to get out at the same time, so bear with me.
Rush Limbaugh. That Baron Harkkonan son of a bitch, has single handedly made it acceptable to spew racially charged hate speech out in the open. We are all aware that racism was festering it never died, and it wasn't really hidden all that well.
You recognize dogwhistles, you feel the tension when you walk in a room. You know why the old lady down the street let's her dog bark at your kids a little too long (behind the fence) while she stares out the window. But that... that I could deal with. It's part and parcel of being a black woman.
That said, my new neighbors threw a party last weekend. His friends thought it would be a good idea to talk about how they hated black women and what were good for -- I'll spare you the details. Whatever--I don't care what they think.
But they said it right under my babies' window.
Turns out, it was a bad idea.

Rant off.

They send inspectors out to view the construction at various stage of the project. If the inspector doesn't like something you have to stop and change it before you can continue.

Speaking as someone who has worked some home construction, this is a Very Good Thing. In modern homes, once the drywall goes up it's virtually impossible to judge if there is a problem with the work (carpentry, electrical or plumbing). The municipality to needs to insure quality work so that home-buyers will be willing to buy, because often you can't tell if anything is wrong without ripping the walls down to the studs.

When I've taken down the dry wall or plaster I've found a) empty whiskey bottles (1920s era) b) partial studs and c)wiring wrapped in electrical tape for insulation. Trust me, you want to buy a structure that has been permitted and inspected.

It also doesn't help that my greenhouse is an unusual project. Most of these inspectors are looking at new decks, 2nd story expansions, new home construction. They don't see many greenhouses so they gave me a little extra scrutiny.

Your insurance company. There isn't a liberal conspiracy to deny you a permit. Codes are written by insurance companies, architects, engineers etc.

If you want to hook up to electricity, natural gas, water or sewage -those companies need to know that your structure is safe to do so.

If you want to have your structure insured against fire, theft, wind, tornados etc, the insurance company will only insure structures that are built to code.

Many weren't in Florida. After Andrew, they were mandated by law to pay the claims regardless. They had figured the premium cost on a certain estimated loss amount. That amount end-up being much higher because the buildings were unsafe. It bankrupt many carriers and those that were left, re-inspected every property they insured in the state of Florida and cancelled coverage on those that were not up to code.

It's a pretty substantial project. 250 sq feet attached to the back of the house. Heavy 7 ft long double paned extra thick glass. Heavy duty aluminum frame, some steel supports.

I think that's the main issue you're having with your codes department, KT. If this were a separate outbuilding, I doubt you'd have anywhere near the same PITA problems as you are since it'll be attached to the house.

Didn't State Farm flip Florida the bird and leave?

No. I worked with State Farm at that time. They reinspected every structure they had on the books and dumped those that weren't up to code. It wasn't cheap to do that, but they had to dig way deep in their coffers to pay all the claims from Andrew. It hurt them, but it didn't bankrupt them.

Perhaps it was Allstate --State Farm is often confused with them because the names are similar and they are both "household" names.

I had a friend who worked for another company involved in valueing claims. The industry had virtual cities of trailers set-up to deal with it. She was there for weeks at a time.

True. I still think there is a disconnect.

I hear more about the vast difference in income than I do about alleged crimes or immoral behavior.

I still can't blame Wall Street. It is made-up of gamblers, they are going to do what they do until they are stopped. It's up to us to rein them in and stay-on-top of those we elected to regulate them.

If there is immorality, it is on the part of Congress Critters who allowed themselves to be woo'ed by lobbyists and, IMHO, probably themselves profited.

Today's Tea Partying Creationist Republican in Politics update:

Tea party Republican runs for Fairfax school board

On Nov. 8, Fairfax voters will choose three candidates to fill countywide “at-large’’ seats on the school board. [...]

Republican-endorsed Lin-Dai Kendall is the only at-large candidate I’ve talked with who has identified herself as a member of the tea party movement. I asked her how her political beliefs inform her views on school policy.

[...]

What sets Kendall apart from other candidates is her affiliation with the tea party, which she describes as a movement “geared toward restoring America’s ideals.”

She raises questions about school curricula — particularly in government and social studies classes — [...]

“We are a nation founded on Judeo-Christian values, and that has been downplayed extraordinarily in my view,” said Kendall, an architect and mother of four. “We are teaching revisionist history.”

She wants U.S. history classes to do a better job teaching about the Founding Fathers, and she wants government classes to emphasize the exceptionalism of the United States and its free-market economy.

“It’s the one system around the world that is proven to create wealth,” she said. [really?]

The Constitution, she said, should be taught as the immutable law of the land, not as a living document that can change with the times.

Her beliefs are rooted in broader feelings about the country’s political direction, she said.

“I think the recognition of the rugged individualism that made America great has been completely written over,” she said. [...]

Asked about the role of religion in public schools, she said she believes in secular public schools and the separation of church and state. She said she would support teaching intelligent design and creationism alongside evolution and the Big Bang — an issue that divided school board candidates in the 1990s but has since largely disappeared from the public conversation over schools.

“I think that we should put out all the theories because that’s what they are, theories,” she said. “I don’t want to tell them what is, in terms of our origins, because we don’t know.”

Kendall, who serves as president of the Republican Women of Clifton, [...]

She believes in separation of church and state... so she wants creationism taught in public schools.

Why does my head hurt?

Yet there has to be more to it than that, no?

I suspect that the real (physical) world has put the United States into a place where "wealth", which remember is one of the Tea Partiers favorite word, has crested along with international influence, and not coincidently along with the peaking in natural resource extraction within the borders.

When unspoken but still substantial belief systems get upended something has to give. Many of the older Americans, and the Tea Partiers are dominated by grey hairs, have had the "rules" changed on them. They grew up in an era when America could do anything, and afford anything. At least that was the perception. Today it is becoming evident that the US is facing its own limits - sort of like we all do when we transition from youth to old age, we discover we can't do everything and anything, even though we believed that as children.

By the way, since the topic of antisemitism has been on my mind, I'd like to encourage everyone to see this great movie:

[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

[Video]It's a movie that directly confronted the antisemitism in the US.

I luv luv luv John Garfield, love him in everything Ive seen him in. He was a major target of cons before HUAC too, as was everyone in eeeevilll h-wood who advocated openly for civil rights.

I will have to check when I get home, but I'm certain he landed in Red Channels (for those not familiar, the commiebaiting bible for dumb con bigots of the period.) Typical of their kind, unable to compete, they wanted everyone in competition with them canned. It surprises me not one iota Ayn Rand was a friendly witness to HUAC.

Well...While I generally agree and realize a 6 word post cannot bring the complexities of religion to bear on a blog..
I think of Religion like a multi faceted jewel..
Religion is faith
Religion is Love ( Right )
Religion is knowledge unto its self ( Bible and Holy Books)
Religion is rules.. ( Really..when you think about it..You can't buy more rules )
Religion is interpretations ( Look at Christanity.. You may be saying Hail Marys in the confessional asking forgiveness for sin or handling snakes or speaking in tongues..You never know )
Don't forget there are 72 Virgins waiting for you
Religion is community.. Like minded people...Catholics, Muslims, Protestants etc..By having religions you can have leaders condemning pretty much everything depending of their views..
Religion will hang the Son of Man.. No problem..
And if God declares you His People.. You are in deep do do..Man will kill you by the Millions in ovens
Religion...

I think it was just anything to bash Obama. The Tea Party introduced a lot of antigovernment paranoia back into the Republican party. Suddenly they were opposed to DHS, Homeland security, TSA, FEMA. Now it's fading with the revival of the antiwar left. Paulians, Truthers, Illuminati cranks are migrating from the Tea Party to their old antiwar pals OWS.

There has been a lot of change. I think a black man in the white house is just a visible change.

Global politics; global communication; global economy; immigrants don't Anglicize their names any more; earthquake in Chile caused the earth to tilt on it's access, we lost a few nanoseconds of our day because of another one (I can't recall the specifics); signs are written in Spanish and English; A college degree is about as meaningful as a HS diploma used to be; sex on tv; a woman lost the democratic nomination to a black man; LGBT is talked about openly; 9/11; Mr Spock has feelings; LADY GAGA; and we have a Sekrit Mooslim Black non-citizen in the White House.

AND all of this in the last 20 years, which is, historically speaking, pretty much simultaneously. Talk about Paradigm shifts. . .

re: #321 Killgore Trout

I think it was just anything to bash Obama. The Tea Party introduced a lot of antigovernment paranoia back into the Republican party. Suddenly they were opposed to DHS, Homeland security, TSA, FEMA. Now it's fading with the revival of the antiwar left. Paulians, Truthers, Illuminati cranks are migrating from the Tea Party to their old antiwar pals OWS.

Neither really went away, the antiwar left or the troother/paulians/illuminati-antisemitic cranks.

Many on the OWS/antiwar left also share a loathing for Obama with the rwnj. Doesn't quite match the virulent crossburning of the tea party, but there are indeed those elements.

Added for clarity.

You should have seen all those fwd:fwd:fwd:fwds of that idiotic email from "its tie for a woman in the white house types", about Black men getting the vote before white women and 2008 being some kind of re-do of that.

Lol as if I "as a wommonn" would ever be on board with that crap.

Unmarried teenage girls aren't ashamed and aren't hidden away by their families; baby daddies don't feel the need to marry their baby mama's; no one is ashamed to take "charity" from the government; THEY DON'T LEARN ENGLISH!;
THEY AREN'T CITIZENS; cars talk to you now; women can get pregnant because they want to; people talk about sex; smoking cigarettes is bad; smoking pot is ok; Space Program has ended; People no longer have land lines into their homes --cell phones only. People don't write letters, the USPS is going broke;

Can we think of more?

Last 20 years guys . .

Yeah I just saw the score. We're seeing a return to the 60's and 70's where pitching dominated and as a former LL pitcher I love it.

re: #115 Sergey Romanov

I dunno. The people in the morgue around Kaddafi's corpse looked all like Islamist-y and, I don't know, like what you see in various "militant" videos. I hope this impression is biased and wrong and there will be no new Islamist age in Libya.

A long beard isn't necessarily an indicator of an Islamist. It's part of the Sunnah, so any devout Muslim male might have a beard. Some who are not so devout also have beards. ;)

re: #122 Sergey Romanov

Take a look at videos from Chechen guerrillas. See if you see the diff. I guess that all those "Allahu Akbar" shouts out of the blue are the usual thing, but...

Allahu Akbar is a VERY common utterance. It's repeated in the adhan (call to prayer), numerous times during each of the 5 daily prayers, when people are excited, happy, angry, you name it. It just seems "out of the blue" to you because you're not accustomed to hearing it all the time.

re: #128 Sergey Romanov

Yeah, I got it. It's more the behavior/general vibe. Though these are "secondary" features and these guys may actually be democrats at heart. ;) At least one would hope so.

Actually, I don't think that was the vibe—at least not in the way that I think you're probably imagining it. My Arabic isn't fluent, Libyans have their own accent & dialects, and there was a lot of commotion (not to mention crappy audio to begin with), but I'll tell you how I read the situation.

The older, dark-skinned, husky guy with the bushy beard that came to the forefront around 1:35 seemed to be trying to calm everyone down. One of the first (intelligible) things he said was "Astaghfirullah", which means "I seek forgiveness from Allah". To me, his facial expression was one of chagrin mixed with an understanding of the extreme emotions of the moment.

Except for a word here & there I couldn't understand the rest, but what I can tell you is that in Islam the manhandling or mutilation of a corpse—any corpse, Muslim or not—is strictly forbidden. Ditto for celebrating or gloating over someone's death.

The younger guys (and even some of the older ones) had been doing all of the above, so he appeared to be trying to calm them down by reminding them that what they were doing was completely inappropriate, Islamically speaking. It seemed to work as they appeared to become much more subdued & sober after that. His tone of voice and the rhythmic nature of his speech was that of someone talking about religion.

So, yes, in a way you were right in that it was an Islamic thing, but it wasn't something ominous or something that should cause anyone to be filled with foreboding (unless Muslims trying to actually follow any part of Islam unnerves you, heh). My best guess is he was telling them something along the lines of, "Listen brothers, I understand how you feel, but Islam says [insert Hadith, Sunnah, verses form the Qur'an, etc.]. Not only that, but the whole world is watching us and will judge us based on your behavior. Is this really the impression you want to give the world about Libyans & Muslims?..."

Hope that helps put things in perspective a little. :)
